Double Gameweek 34 – Analysis and Reaction

After a long wait, we finally received confirmation of Double Gameweek 34 this afternoon.

Planning and preparation now gets underway in earnest as we assess the best ways to tackle the run-in after eight teams were handed a pair of fixtures in Gameweek 34.

Confirmed Double Gameweek 34 schedule
Bournemouth (liv MUN)
Brighton (cry TOT)
Burnley (LEI CHE)
Chelsea (sot bur)
Leicester (bur SOT)
Man United (WBA bou)
Southampton (CHE lei)
Spurs (MCI bha)

This leaves six matches still requiring a new date.

Chelsea vs Huddersfield
Leicester vs Arsenal
Man City vs Brighton
Swansea vs Southampton
Tottenham vs Newcastle
West Ham vs Man United

The Premier League have confirmed that these will be rescheduled by Tuesday April 3 – before Gameweek 33 – though it is now expected that those 12 teams will now face a Double Gameweek 37.

Providing they drop in Gameweek 37, the schedule would be as follows:

Potential Double Gameweek 37 schedule
Arsenal (BUR lei)
Brighton (MUN mci)
Chelsea (LIV HUD)
Huddersfield (mci che)
Leicester (WHU ARS)
Man City (HUD BHA)
Man United (bha whu)
Newcastle (wat tot)
Southampton (eve swa)
Swansea (bou SOT)
Tottenham (wba NEW)
West Ham (lei MUN)

This is the reverse of the previous school of thought, which had many managers making plans based on the assumption that 12 teams would be playing twice in Double Gameweek 34.

The surprise switch in today’s fixtures may now have many managers reassessing their plans for the run-in, particularly those who still have one or more of the Wildcard, Bench Boost and Free Hit chips in hand.

Earlier this week it was revealed that this is thought to be 12% of the top 10,000 managers and an estimated 20% of “active” managers.

Significantly, some 52,000+ have already played their Wildcard since the Gameweek 31 deadline passed, perhaps expecting that the likes of Arsenal and Man City to also be handed a Double Gameweek 34. Indeed, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the most signed ahead of a return to domestic action, claiming over 125,000 new owners so far.

Immediately, you can see that today’s confirmation has made matters far more difficult for those without the Free Hit chip who were targeting the Gunners’ striker for an expected Double Gameweek 34.

Arsenal were previously one of six teams – along with Burnley, Man City, Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham – who were all expected to have a Double Gameweek 34 and also play in Gameweek 35.

Now, however, that applies only to Burnley.

Without the Free Hit, managers will have to balance their building for the Double Gameweek and then use transfer hits to repair the squad ahead of the Gameweek 35 postponements. What’s more, with the likes of Arsenal and Man City treated to favourable fixtures, a Free Hit in Gameweek 35 could prove even more devastating than the success story that was Gameweek 31.

Certainly, for those still holding their Bench Boost chips, Gameweek 34 was the favoured window prior to today’s reveal.

Now, though, with five of the top six sides – Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Spurs – all likely to play twice in Gameweek 37, some will be setting their sights on the latter round instead.

Indeed, City, United and Spurs all face a pair of opponents outside of the top eight and will clearly offer huge points potential.

Much depends on the state of your squad, of course, and the number of chips still at your disposal. Indeed, this afternoon’s news could provide food for thought for those managers who avoided “dead-ending” their squads in Gameweek 31 and have yet to play the Wildcard.

Should they now favour Double Gameweek 37, they could now play the Free Hit Chip in Double Gameweek 34, with the Wildcard in Gameweek 36 and Bench Boost in Gameweek 37.

On the other hand, while the allure of Double Gameweek 37 may be greater on paper, the reality could be that, by then, many of the sides may have little to play for in the league.

Those Bench Boosting in Double Gameweek 37 will be relying on many teams still being motivated and therefore less prone to rotation, yet there’s a chance that the fight for survival and battle for top-four finishes could be done and dusted by then.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Spurs could all still be involved in cup competitions come Double Gameweek 37.

In the case of Man City and Arsenal, the Champions League and Europa League semi-final second legs are in the midweek before the start of Double Gameweek 37. Meanwhile, the Europa League final is just three days after Gameweek 38.

Chelsea, Spurs and Man United all still have hopes of clinching the FA Cup, with the final taking place on May 19 – six days after the end of the season.

You only have to look back to Double Gameweek 37, where Antonio Conte named the following XI at home to Watford in the second of Chelsea’s matches, with one eye on the FA Cup final on May 27.

Begovic; Zouma, Ake, Terry; Azpilicueta, Chalobah, Kante, Kenedy; Hazard, Willian; Batshuayi

While those who opt to Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 34 may have fewer big-hitting, explosive options to load up on, their squads could be less likely to suffer from unexpected teamsheets as fringe players get the chance of a run-out in the penultimate Gameweek.

With Harry Kane potentially still in the running along with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Christian Eriksen and Riyad Mahrez, it’s not as if we’ll short of premium, in-form picks for Double Gameweek 34.

Arguably, then, Fantasy managers who are looking to lessen the likelihood of rotation – and avoid a repeat of instances such as Conte’s infamous XI – may look to using an early Wildcard in Gameweek 32 or 33 in order to profit from the security of Double Gameweek 34 instead.

Choosing when to play the Triple Captain chip will also impact in our plans.

Looking at the main contenders in Double Gameweek 34, Kane – if fit – hosts Man City, Mahrez and Hazard have Burnley away, while Lukaku, although in form, has been far from explosive and managed three double-digit returns all season.

On the other hand, Kane’s Double Gameweek 37, away to West Brom and at home to Newcastle, could prove the big factor in deciding when to play our Triple Captain chip and therefore also our Bench Boost.

Granted, we won’t forgot this season’s Double Gameweek 22 in a hurry – the Spurs striker returned just three points against Swansea and West Ham – yet Kane’s exploits in the corresponding round last term will live far longer in the memory.

Five goals and an assist over 180 minutes’ pitch-time against Man United and Leicester in Double Gameweek 37 preceded a hat-trick at Hull in the season finale to clinch the Golden Boot.

Even if he fails to overcome Mohamed Salah as the top scorer in 2017/18, a fully-fit Kane’s security of pitch-time makes him a big favourite for the Double Gameweek 37 Triple Captain chip.

Again, while Man City also have the fixtures – at home to Huddersfield and Brighton – if Pep Guardiola’s men wrap up the league title early and progress past Liverpool into the Champions League semi-finals, rotation looks inevitable.

Indeed, their head-to-head with the Merseysiders could ultimately prove decisive in how we approach the remaining rounds of fixtures.

Defeat to Liverpool would leave City with only league matches left on their agenda and that might not be a bad thing, even if the title is wrapped up by that point.

As discussed on club’s official website earlier in the week, Guardiola’s men have as many as ten Premier League records in their sights.

Incentive enough, surely, to limit the chances of rotation should they fall to defeat and fail to reach the last four in Europe.

Not a hope in hell I go without Auba for the next two weeks. Think he outscores the other options by enough that the extra game doesn’t make a difference

My first draft on the WC:

    DDG (Ryan)
    Alonso - Lowton - Morgan (Tarkowski, 4.3M)
Salah - Mahrez - Gross - Willian (Ibe)
    Lukaku - Vardy - Aubameyang

Any thoughts on this team? Very keen on keeping Alonso, but might have to sell for Christensen to fund my mid/5th defender for BB.. Other ideas that gives me the opportunity to keep Alonso?

Double gameweek at 37, gw 35 is not problem if you got FH, when you already taking 3 arsenal.

Their next two fixtures are excellent. Don’t get why people would choose to miss that because Vardy (who rarely scores more than one a game) plays twice in GW34

Well anyway. Your mid looks pretty weak.
Willian dont get full minutes and might get rotated.
        Ibe is just bench fodder.
Gross is questionable, but maybe best for that 6.0m range..

Agree with this. Targeting 7/8 players with DGW 34, make sure I get 10/11 good players out in 35 and then 9/10 with DGW37.

Remember, a good player playing once could well do better than an average (or awful) player playing once!

I really like this as I don't have a free hit so giving it a lot of thought. The caveat is the triple options look so much better in 37 and there could be an awful lot of rotation. Although I suppose the latter will affect everyone regardless of putting out 11 or 15.

Who are you going to triple 34? Mahrez looks the best bet! I daren't give it to Lukaku again...

Other thought is if you're going to wildcard 35 are you going to treble up on Arsenal and City I assume? Other teams have dire fixtures until the double that don't blank. You've got to plan to have some Spurs, Leicester and United cover still. Bench four from those I suppose.

I was considering this too, until I realized most of the teams outside of Arsenal who play in GW35 and also have DGW37 have pretty tricky fixtures. Not sold on it yet

Man City: Good fixtures but rotation risk, will have to monitor this carefully
Newcastle: eve in 35 and wat/tot in 37. Tricky
Swansea: mci in 35, CHE in 36, bou/SOU in 37. DGW works but the games leading up to it aren't
West Ham: ars in 35, lei/MUN in 37. Tough fixtures

      1. Hotdogs for Tea

But you can also cover you mini league rivals that play the WC in 33 😉

I don't know... from what I've seen so far the players I'd want to bring in for GW35 (Everton, palace, watford) are not the ones on the DGW37 list.

But I might just end up getting Tosun anyway

I see a stronger argument for WCing in 36, or even going back to the original WC33 plan but have a team that's less DGW34-centric

I think it makes more sense to WC in 36 as long as you can field a reasonable team in 35. This way you can maximise the BB in 37 because the 5 teams with a fixture in 35 and a double in 37 are largely unappealing. West Ham and Swansea have dreadful fixtures in 35 and 36 and Arse and City will be rotation nightmares concentrating on Europe. Just leaves meh Newcastle.

WC 36 BB 37 looks great as there will be a bigger pool of good players with better fixtures and saves you 2FT for the final GW38 to take punts

Yep reckon this is the best hope to counter the advantage of the FH'ers as the real money can be made in a custom BB37 team. Too many variables in play before GW36. Just have to make due before then.

Can’t get team decent team out in 35 and 34 without a FH, which I don’t have. Bought Sane, Auba and Ayew in preparation but now made redundant by fixture announcement

Swans attackers against City - everyone keeps saying City have nothing to play for and Swans fighting relegation

Arnie can score against anyone on his day

        Needs must at times 🙂

          Firmino Aubameyang Tosun

          + means they have a DGW34
          * means they blank in GW35

What about something like this? 8 DGWers and 9 for BGW35. And I'll be able to field 11 for GW35 for a hit, although I'm not sure who I will replace though.. maybe son for Mhki?

That mix was sort of my plan but now only Burnley have a double and a game in 35, not sure a squad can be stretched to cover 34 and 35 without hits ?

Sorry but confused, this will be my tentative team in light of the new fixtures. With the old predicted fixtures it was obviously a lot easier to navigate 34/35 but this isn't too bad? It covers both weeks quite well without a FH

Might get punished for no lukaku though, that's the most glaring issue

Will there’s be an article on Sky Sports Fantasy with the fixture announcement?

Currently ranked 4522 with the following team:

    Lössl
    VDH Christensen Zanka
    Mahrez Walcott Mané Salah Shaqiri
    Wilson Auba

    10 transfers remaining.

Is he more nailed than Simpson? I thought it would be the other way round but I’m not familiar with their defence tbh.

Chilwell seems to get more minutes then him lately the only one who actually is in defence is Maguire

Chelsea, Man Utd and Spurs are surely likely to rotate a lot in DGW34, prior to the FA Cup semi finals.

Very few players from those teams that you can be confident about.

Willian, Smalling and Son are all unlikely to start both games in 34 in my opinion, but are highly popular WC picks. Anyone agree?

I think Smalling is a risk but I’m happy with the other two playing at least 120 mins

Pedro surely a massive threat to Willian for the midweek game before the semi final (bur)?

And for Son (bri), Lamela, Lucas and even Sissoko could get a game.

I have both Willian & Son currently but major doubts now I've seen how the fixtures fall.

It is not still possible that the FA Cup quarter finalists games for GW35 (blanks)
Could still be fitted into GW35.
As there is space in midweek as none of the quarter finalists have European competition.

Still twists and turns to come I feel

I’ve WC this week, and used my TC. I think this is best now to get 11 DGW by 34 with bench made up of GW37 DGW players.

FH in 35 and get more 37 DGW players in the following two weeks to try and get 15 for BB in 37

Worth considering PVA on our wildcards?

No doubles, but consistently good fixtures for the rest of the season, plenty of motivation and attacking threat.

Currently I'm on double Burnley, and 14 dgwers in gw34 - but considering it. Plays Brighton in gw34.

Whats the GW37 DGW fixtures to be added?

  26. FPLShaqiri
    • 6 Years
    6 years, 1 month ago

My strategy is WC33 BB34 FH35 TC37. This is mainly driven by wanting Spurs/ Chelsea players and that my GW31 team have ok fixtures in GW32 (I avoided Everton).

From reading the comments, managers seem to like FH34 WC36 BB37 TC? This have advantages but I would expect to lose ground in DGW34 and also it limits TC returns if it’s played in a single GW.

Surely the triple captain has to be in a double Gameweek? Maybe my memories of San(tc)hez and his 75 points are clouding my thoughts but for those who haven’t yet hit the wildcard button I’d be interested to hear current plans. Should I suck it up and do WC32 even?

Hi everyone. What do you think of this wildcard. Just scrolled through and it’s looking a bit template but here goes
    DDG Ryan
    Alonso Bailly Christensen Lowton Morgan
    Son Willian Marhez Salah Gross
    Vardy Lukaku Murray
    0 itb
Will look at getting Kane in from GW36 but not sure how yet !

No FH so on WC have to balance week 34 double week players with players with game in 35. 3 Burnley therefore essential as only side with double 34 that play 35.

Have come up with team below. What do you think? Would transfer Auba to Lukaku for week 34 and reverse in 35. So 12 double week 34 and 8 week 35 ( perhaps take hit and get 9 or 10 out)

    De Gea Ryan
    Alonso Mustafi Robertson Lowton Morgan
    Salah Son Willian Mahrez Gudmundsson
    Aubameyang Firmino Wood
