Scout Scribbles – Gudmundsson Concern for Clarets

The rigours of the international break cause worries over a key Burnley asset and a well-owned Liverpool defender. Elsewhere, options grow in Man United’s backline, and there’s a striking boost for Stoke City.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (5.1) has been catching the eye of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers on Wildcards thanks to a set of recent returns and his price tag as an enabler.

A goal and two assists over the last five Gameweeks – and two and seven respectively for the season – has helped his ownership double to a still modest 1.7%.

And with an equally solid schedule (wba wat LEI & CHE), a Gameweek 35 fixture (away at Stoke City) and a run-in that also includes home matches with Brighton and Bournemouth, close to 14,000 have already brought him in over the break.

But the winger was withdrawn on 73 minutes for Iceland in their 3-1 defeat to Peru in New Jersey early on Wednesday morning, with initial (and unconfirmed) reports suggesting his withdrawal might not have been tactical.

Those with Gudmundsson in their squads will now have to wait for an official update from Sean Dyche later today.

Robertson’s Scottish setback

Similar reports have surfaced regarding Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson.

Owned by 7.6%, the left-back suffered a knock for Scotland and was subbed off after 67 minutes of their 1-0 away win over Hungary on Tuesday.

Robertson’s ownership has quadrupled since Gameweek 20, and only Roberto Firmino is proving more popular among Reds players in the Gameweek 32 transfer market.

A trip to Crystal Palace awaits this weekend and we’d hope for official confirmation as to the extent of any issue for Robertson via Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference.

Unlike Gudmundsson, though, the lack of a Double Gameweek has diminished Robertson’s appeal, with Mohamed Salah the only Liverpool player likely to remain in our Wildcard plans for the run-in.

Striker boost for Stoke

One conference that’s already happened brought generally positive news from Stoke City manager Paul Lambert.

The Potters travel to Arsenal on Sunday and Lambert will have Mame Biram Diouf available following a successful run-out for Senegal on Tuesday.

Stoke have been forced to make do and mend up front in recent weeks, with midfielder Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting asked to play the lone striker role on more than one occasion.

Lambert has now confirmed that the Cameroon international will be out for several weeks with a groin injury suffered when scoring in the 2-1 defeat to Everton in Gameweek 30, so Diouf’s return is decidedly timely.

Meanwhile, defender Erik Pieters is back in the squad following an internal dispute.

Young a doubt

Man United’s Ashley Young was yet another player to pick up an issue on international duty.

The England wing-back played the full 90 minutes in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Italy, but then returned to his club with a knock.

He will be assessed for United ahead of Saturday’s encounter with Swansea City just as he was being considered as a cheap (4.9) midfield enabler for Wildcard managers now that he seems to have cemented his role as left-back under Jose Mourinho, starting six of the last seven Gameweeks.

But if the injury proves to be more serious, he could give way to the embattled Luke Shaw against the Swans, although the fit-again Marcos Rojo is also an option after he played the full 90 minutes for Argentina in their 6-1 drubbing by Spain.

Rojo has not figured for United since a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town in early February, and his return could have repercussions across the backline, threatening Chris Smalling’s security of starts at centre-half in particular.

The England international has missed just three matches since Gameweek 7 and is second only to Romelu Lukaku for transfers-in among United players this week.

But it’s not just Rojo who could replace Smalling in the starting XI, with ESPN claiming that Phil Jones has returned to training after a two-month absence with what is reported as a hamstring problem.

Yoshida option Saints

Southampton’s Maya Yoshida (4.6) is another centre-half in the frame for a return after missing four matches with a knee injury.

He was on the bench for the Saints’ FA Cup quarter-final win over Wigan Athletic ten days ago and skipped international duty with Japan to rebuild his fitness for the club’s league vital run-in and cup semi-final with Chelsea.

Investment in Southampton centre-backs has not exactly been a prosperous move recently – Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt have played the last 11 matches and have kept just one clean sheet in that time.

But two Double Gameweeks, the return of Yoshida and the positive impact of new manager Mark Hughes might persuade a few brave souls to take a punt on a Saints defender.

Stephens, at 4.5, is currently the most popular Southampton signing heading into Gameweek 32, just pipping budget goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (4.4).

one thing to note if both lacazette and auba start is that auba is shifted to the wing in this situation. I don't think both will start myself, I can see lacazette coming on late to get minutes but if the situation does happen then it's a negative for auba

I agree, can't see Laca starting but I can see him getting mins to build his fitness, may be a nice way to manage Mkhi's minutes.

    Hows my wildcard team??

Feels a bit light at the back so may consider downgrading Auby or Vardy after this gameweek

    McCarthy
    Lowton - Mustafi - Kiko
    Salah - Willian - Gross - Mahrez
    Lukaku - Vardy - Aubameyang

    Ryan - Son - Morgan - Dunk

I have BB (34), FH (35) and TC (37 on Kane) and will play non-template wc team (without Son and Willian). Your thoughts?

    DDG - Ryan
    Alonso - Mustafi - Lowton - Dunk - Morgan
    Mahrez - Salah - Gros - Mkhitaryan - Gudmundsson
    Aubameyang - Vardy - Firmino

    Prior to gameweek 34:
    Mustafi -> Cedric
    Mkhitaryan -> Tadic
    Firmino -> Lukaku (c)

I don't like the in-built hit, and downgrading Mustafi to Cedric seems like a wasted transfer unless you need the cash, so I'd generate that by doing Mkhi to someone-cheaper-than-Tadic and then getting Kaku that way. Otherwise, it looks fun. Good luck.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on my current WC draft.

    DDG - Fab
    Bailly - Christensen - Chillwell - Tarko - Kiko
    Salah - Willian - Son - Mahrez - Carroll
    Lukaku - Auba - Murray

Not happy with both Christensen and Chillwell due to not being nailed. Kiko is a budget choice more than anything. 3m in the bank but am hoping to use that to get a City attacker in GW37.

How does my team look ? Don't know how to pick my subs. On this at the moment:

    DDG

    Stephens, smalling, lowton

    Gross, mahrez, salah, son, William

    Auba, vardy, Murray

    Subs:

    Ryan, Murray, Morgan, Fernandez

What do people think is a better way ?

I'm leaning towards Brnes over Murray jsut because Murray will be on bench most weeks anyway and the extra cash itb helps with Kane later on and derisks Lukaku/Vardy for GW34

    Ryan vs McCarthy

Only looking at DGW34 and DGW37 because most will have a main keeper for all teh other GW's

    Ryan: cry, TOT, MUN, mci
    McCarthy: CHE, lei, eve, swa

But on BB34, FH35, TC37 plan, it's only the 1st 2 GW's and actually McCarthy may be better for save points with CHE & lei - saves 0.1m

    Thoughts??

Bould made it sound as if Laca will get minutes this weekend, they haven't started both of them in the same team as far as I can tell. But Aub is of course only able to play in the prem, so should get the majority of minutes, maybe subbed after 70 to get Laca back to fitness.

After much deliberation over Mkhi and Mustafi I'm reluctantly avoiding both due to rotation concern and going with the following template, doesn't feel very exciting though as it's so similar to thousands of others out there.

.7 itb, Kane plan if fit, Son to a 6.2 (Albrighton, Lingard, Gud etc) and Aubameyang to Kane.

    DDG, Ryan
    Alonso, Vert, Lowton, Morgan, Dunk
    Salah, Son, Gross, Mahrez, Willian
    Aubameyang, Lukaku, Barnes

      Yep it looks good...

Thoughts on a Burnley defender instead of Dunk?

Burnley have 2 home games in GW34 and we’ve seen how strong they can be defensively at home....

I’d personally rather double Burnley instead of Double Brighton who have and away fixture and then Spurs at home....

      Your thoughts would be appreciated

I have considered this, decided against it because I may want Gud if fit for 34. I also like Dunk at home for next 2 over Burnley 2 away games despite facing WB and Watford, I really think the latter will score and WB are desperate so will go all out. I agree Burnley may have a better double but they do stoll face Leicester and Chelsea + I won't play that defender again this season unless there are injuries elsewhere in my team. Cheers for the suggestion though.

    Dubravka*^ Fabianski*
    Mustafi*^ Otamendi*^ Dummett*^ Mawson* Robbo^
    Mahrez* Mkhi*^ Sane*^ Salah^ Kenedy*^
    Auba*^ Bobby^ Austin*

    Mahrez -> Son in 33.
    FH in 34.
11 in 35 with Mawson as a sub.
12 DGWers for 37 already and enough dosh for Kane.

    A) Smalling/Christensen + Hazard
    B) Alonso + Willian

Haven't played my WC yet (playing it in GW35, no FH chip) so spreading funds around the squad isn't that important yet. The only upgrade I would be able to do if I get Willian instead of Hazard is Smalling/Christensen -> Alonso so just look at these two combinations in isolation over GWs 32-34.

    Afternoon!
Looking to wildcard next week, still have all the chips in tact.
Currently sitting 3 points off top spot in my mini league but don't have any Arsenal cover for this week, leader has Mykhi & Auba!
Considering Eriksen -> Ozil but will cost me 4pts.
Gives me Arsenal cover in case they wipe the floor with Stoke and offers a differential to the two players he holds.

I would rather have Fab's single fixture than Ryan's dbl!
Pope is close to getting into the ENG WC squad perhaps? Doubt he'll be dropped but Heaton may get a game.
McCarthy hasn't done too much wrong but yeah new manager and all that.

Yeah Ryan not great imo. But has the fabled double double so obviously everyone has him

...but can only be played in one of the dbls with BB! And with most seemingly boosting him for 34, would prefer an alternative myself. Then again the scouts all have him and they should know a lot more than me about FPL tbf!

So my WC boils down to the following 2 decisions.

    1. a. Alonso or
    b. Azpi (concerned about Alonso rotation)
    2. a. Lukaku + Vertonghen or
    b. Vardy + Chelsea defender (for the next 2)

I plan on Vertonghen + Chelsea defender and Lukaku + Vardy from DGW34 onwards. Auba + Mustafi will hold their place for the next 2.

Can you help a guy out?

If the Scoutcast is recorded on Tuesdays, why does it only get published on Thursdays?

Is there anywhere else to listen other than youtube?

Don't think so, they should just bang out the audio straight away but I think it gets edited.

I use a youtube to mp3 converter to turn it into an audio file only, then download that onto my ipod

Had A on WC, but can afford B just.

    A) Mkhi + Firmino
    B) Groß + Lukaku
