Captain Poll – Gameweek 33

Earlier today, we launched our latest Captain Poll to gauge your views on the best armband candidates for Gameweek 33.

The number one captain pick in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in five of the last six Gameweeks, Mohamed Salah will again be among the favourites with Liverpool facing a derby day trip to Everton.

A late winner at Crystal Palace last Saturday lunchtime means that the Egyptian has scored or assisted in 23 of 29 league starts on his way to the top of the FPL rankings.

Up against a Toffees defence that have just one clean sheet in the last 12 Gameweeks, Salah seeks a fifteenth double-figure haul of an incredible campaign.

Away from home, he is ranked second for goals (12), shots (46), efforts in the box (40) and is joint-top with Harry Kane for attempts on target, with 23.

Sadio Mane is the visitors’ other form player, serving up returns in five successive Gameweeks, totalling three goals and a trio of assists.

Spurs’ trip to Stoke brings their quartet of big-hitters into consideration, with Harry Kane expected to provide the main challenge to Salah for the armband.

After returning to action with minutes from the bench in the win at Chelsea, Kane looks set to lead the line against a defence that’s leaked more goals (61) than any other side.

Encouragingly for Kane’s backers, he has scored eight times in his last four league meetings with the Potters.

Furthermore, away from home, he is the top-ranked player for goals (13), shots (61) and efforts in the box (42).

The Spurs midfield could mount a challenge to their fit-again striker, though.

Dele Alli’s brace away to Chelsea took his tally to three goals and two assists in the last three Gameweeks. Meanwhile, Son Heung-min has 36 FPL points over that period and served up 16 points in a 5-1 home win over Stoke earlier in the season.

Then there is the consistent Christian Eriksen to consider. He was also on the scoresheet at Stamford Bridge and remains their top scoring midfielder, ranking fifth in that position overall.

A visit from Southampton’s travel-sick defence looks encouraging for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s growing legion of owners.

The third most bought player in Gameweek 33 so far, a brace at home to Stoke took his tally to five goals and an assist from six league outings for the Gunners. Averaging 6.5 points per match, Aubameyang takes on a defence with just a single clean sheet from their 13 road trips.

Leicester pair Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez welcome a Newcastle United side that have struggled for resilience on the road, claiming just a single shut-out in their previous 13 attempts.

Vardy’s strike at Brighton means that he’s now scored in six of the last eight Gameweeks, yet the Foxes frontman has offer minimal explosive potential – his one and only 10+ points haul was in the season opener against Arsenal.

Mahrez, meanwhile, has supplied returns in 11 of his last 15 league starts and has delivered five sets of double-digits thus far.

With uncertainty over the lone striker role, Man City’s midfield offers a host of eye-catching candidates as they attempt to clinch the title at home to neighbours United.

On the back of 44 points in the last four Gameweeks David Silva is the hosts’ form player. Yet the playmaker has been far from explosive at home, with just a single 10+ points haul at the Etihad.

By comparison, Kevin De Bruyne has delivered six sets of double-digits in front of his own fans, while Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane have five apiece.

That duo both found the net at Everton on Saturday to continue their recent form. Sane has three goals and as many assists in his last seven league outings, while Sterling has two goals and four assists in six.

Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku looks the likeliest to breach the Man City backline for the visitors, having recorded four goals and two assists in his last six league matches.

A single assist – and three attempts on goal – in his last four league outings suggests that Eden Hazard may be a gamble at home to West Ham United. However, the visitors’ record on the road offers encouragement – David Moyes’ men have conceded 11 times in their last three away matches.

That also bodes well for Alvaro Morata, who has scored in back-to-back matches in all competitions since returning to the teamsheet.

Despite his brace against Southampton, the Hammers’ Marko Arnautovic looks set to remain a big differential for the Stamford Bridge encounter.

Nonetheless, eight goals and four assists in his last 11 league outings – and three strikes over the international break – underlines the Austrian’s form. Arnautovic fired four shots on target in Gameweek 32, more than any player, and he scored in the 1-0 win over the Blues in Gameweek 16.

Finally, Pascal Gross’ home comforts could be vital for Brighton against visitors Huddersfield this Saturday.

The summer signing has averaged 5.9 points per appearance at the Amex Stadium and is joint-top with De Bruyne for big chances created (12) in front of his own supporters.

Meanwhile, the Terriers arrive on the south coast having conceded in each of their last 13 away matches.

Our poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 33 deadline when we deliver Friday afternoon’s “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind our leading contenders.

    My team for gw 33:
    Hennessey
    Davies - Vvd - Maguire
    Mahrez - Salah - willian - zaha
    Auba (c) - verdy(vc) - firmino

    Ddg - Arnautovic - Fernandez - Francis

And my plan for the next few gameweeks with BB left only:
    34) save and BB
    35) 2FT Francis -> Dummett and 9 players for BGW
    36) 2FT Arni Zaha -> Kennedy Gundogan (my punt, I see him starting in the last 2-3 gwk)
    37) Firmino - Kane with 13 players with DGW

I left 0.4 itb for any price changing in the next 2 weeks...
What do you think: yes or no? Thanks

So is anyone holding off of Kane til 36 like the original plan?
Or is the best option to sell the entire midfield and get him in at any cost? 🙂

GW36 for me. I'll probably bounce between Lukaku and Auba in the meantime.

        Thanks. Very helpful.

My options without going mental are...
        A. Stick to the plan - Auba to Kaku (for 34) and get Kane after 35.
        B. Kane over Kaku (meaning Mustafi to Tarkowski).
        C. Downgrade Willian to Lingard, meaning Utd cover and Kane in over Kaku. This means a hit if I want Mustafi to be a dgw player.

      Transfer thoughts for gw34:
      A) Salah + Zaha > Hazard + Lingard

      or

      B) Salah + Zaha > Willian + Son

Why on earth would you want to get rid of Salah, he's a points machine ? I'd be surprised if he doesn't outscore most of my 14 DGW'ers in GW34.

I have no intention to captain him and the majority won’t captain him so what is the risk in going for a hazard instead in the hope he hauls there’s a good chance of him outscoring Salah over 2 surely??

      Ryan
      Alonso / Bailly / Morgan
      Salah / Mahrez / Son / Willian
      Aubameyang / Firmino / Vardy

DDG // Van der Hoorn / Lowton / L Cook

      A) Bailly --> Vertongen (for free)
      B) Firmino & Mahrez --> Kane & Albrighton (-4)
      C) Hold. Save FT.

Bottomed. For A, I have then got Spurs defence for season run-in & will simply do Auba --> Lukaku for GW34. For B, I get Kane in early; can still also do Auba --> Lukaku, but at the expense of Mahrez (still have Vardy). For C, if I do this, I might as well use 2FTs next week as I will FH in GW35.

    6. JohnnyMagrinho

Still can't get my head around why this Man Utd team is far from being settled.

They have a really nice bunch of fixtures from GW34 on, yet the midfield and defense are prone to risk of rotation.

Does anyone think Lingard is a viable option again? £6.0m is cheap and if he's guaranteed game time in the following weeks he could be an absolute game changer.

I'm gonna monitor Willian, could downgrade to Lingard for the double. I like double United defense and Lukaku though.

Mainly due to the fact that their squad is over-full with big name players, particularly in attacking positions.

Defence is more unfortunate from a FPL perspective, they have 2 nailed on defenders (one is 7m and the other is classified as a mid).

            1. JohnnyMagrinho
                6 years, 25 days ago

Yeah exactly. Other than Valencia and Young it really is anyone's guess who starts in the centre.

Went for Bailly in draft last week rather than Smalling and had Martial in midfield. Ended up missing out on very easy points in a game they both should have started!

                Never again.

I'm with Alonso at the moment but as I'm chasing I'm thinking maybe Valencia is a good 'differential' option.

Since I don’t have free hit or triple captain, I was planning to try and get to gw36 before I wc. This is likely to be my squad for 34 doubles. Is lack of Kane/Sanchez/lukaku too much and I’m going to get burned and I need to wc? Or do you think I can get away with this:

            Pope
            Mee alonso Morgan
            Son Mahrez lingard salah
            Barnes firmino Aubameyang

Vvd Baines Mkhitaryan on bench. Then for gw35 I can get 2 City mids in and wc 36?

That looks like a solid plan but I’d be worried by the lack of kaku or Kane

I’m in a similar situation no fh or tc but was planning to wc in 35 what would you suggest? Looking like this

              Lloris
              Smalling - Maguire - Robertson
              Salah - Mahrez - Mili - Zaha
              Vardy - Lukaku - Kane

Bench: Elliot - Mcarthur - Keane - Kenny

Thanks. Wish I’d never used my free hit! Making the run in very tricky. I would wait for European results. If wcing in 35 then u want plenty of Man City and arsenal but lots riding on if still in Europe. When will u bench boost? 37?

Kane has terrible fixtures for double. If you are comfortable without this week as he is coming back from injury and hasnt been in great form anyway then I dont see the issue.

Lukaku might go big, or might not. Its tough to know. In your position you might be best waiting with fingers crossed

Kane has terrible fixtures for the double? Brighton and a home match against City who will probably have already won the league by then and will play the B team (with an eye on the CL).

If I decide to get in Kane for GW34, what would be the best way?

            My squad:

            DDG (Ryan)
Morgan - Christensen - Mustafi (Tarkowski, Lowton)
Salah - Mahrez - Gross - Willian (Gudmundsson)
            Vardy - Auba - Lukaku

            0.4M ITB.

Think I'm gonna save my transfer this week and then looking at these three options for a hit:

A: Mustafi, Gudmundsson, Auba --> 4.6M def (Naughton?), King and Kane.
B: Mustafi, Gross, Auba --> 5.5M def (Jones/Smalling?), King and Kane.
C: Mustafi, Willian, Auba --> 4.7M def (Naughton?), Lingard and Kane.

Will BB in 34 and FH 35.

Not for the assist. Was lucky not to get booked for the one tackle and the other guys ankle, and butting heads with the other. Could've easily gotten yellow for either.

He is a bit of a hot-head; part of the reason Chelsea won't play him more & were happy to loan is because his discipline is a little bit of an issue. Pretty talented, but a bit of a loose cannon at times.

He's not played many games. Also, the discipline problems were also off-the-pitch. All I'm saying is that he can be a bit reckless at times.

Seems happy at Newcastle & I'm glad for him. Finally gets to play in the position he's supposed to.

I remember the China incident. His been decent on the pitch and just concerned his discipline might be an issue because I plan to play him in 37.

For GW 33 (Lukaku already in)

            a) Auba vs Sou (get Kane 34)
            b) Kane vs Stk

Is the question whether to do Auba > Kane this week? If so, not for me. They could score similarly.

I understand the frustration when there's a route to get him in, but with the opportunity cost of another good fixture.

Ah I see. If he seems to be fit, then I think yes, I'd go for Kane. As you say, Auba's spot is likely only to be in the team for one week - so you may as well just avoid for now anyway.

Virtually identical to my team, we even have the same amount in the back. Only question is Vert or Morgan, i'm currently on Vert as well.

Are you planning Mustafi and Auba to Stephens and Kane for Gw34 ?

I plan Mustafi and Auba to Lukaku and Smalling and captain Lukaku and then kaku to Kane by downgrading don't know who yet
I have a feeling that Newcastle scores Vs Leicester so vert for me
                My concern is Alonso btw

I was considering that was well, but the 1.1m ITB gives us the option of going either way.

I'd keep Alonso when reassess after DGW34.

Yes, could go for Kane in the end,but Lukaku has better fixtures and Smalling is a better option then Stephens even if he plays one game only
I guess, with this set-up we have to stick with Alonso ( very likely that Emerson play second game)

We have 8 players ,and every gmwk we put money in piggy bank.first in that gmwk puts nothing, second 20 cents,3 rd 30 cents and so on, last puts one euro
In the end last overall goes to bank and exchanges coins for money and first gets 100 euros, second 40 and third 30

Currently 3 points top of a heated contest money league. I've embarrassingly let an 80 point lead slip so I beg for advice! I still have BB, FH and I am GW33 WCing right now:

Here's my Wildcard Team so far:

            Hennessy - De Gea

Lowton - Chilwell - Smalling - Vertonghen - Kiko Femenía

            Zaha - Mahrez - Son - Salah - Gudmundsson

            Kane - Barnes - Aubameyang

Funds remaing for Aub - Lukakau

I am still considering Morata, Alonso, Lingard, Lloris, Kenedy.

United play FA Cup Semi 3 days after 2nd game in DGW (Smalling Risk)

I have big concerns about Rotation for the DGW

Zaha really looks like he could get more points than most DGW mids in his range, and his total fixtures are wonderful. I'm concerned about bringing too much DGW players in that I get stuck with

Doesn’t the fact most will not be captaining Salah drastically omit the risk if for example I bin him for Hazard?

Two games for Haz against Saints and Burnley VS one game for Salah against Bournemouth

            Thinking ahead a little.

After next week the plan was to ship Auba and Mustafi for Kaku and a defender up to about the same value (5.5ish).

            Have Alonso/Lowton/Morgan/Vertonghen.

Any suggestions? I had hoped for a Man Utd player, but I could go for a cheapie (Tarkowski or Duffy, even a good sgw player) and have funds for upgrading for the next double.

            VVD Christensen Dunk Morgan
            Salah Mahrez Zaha Kenedy
            Firmino Auba (C)

            A) Murray, Salah
            B) Kane, Matic, -4

Looks perhaps as an easy A, but I'm chasing a 60 point lead, the leader has both players in A and none of the ones in B.

Is Stanislas >> Willian a good choice?

I'd prefer to have a Spurs defender than double United, it would also give you the option of bringing in Kaku for either of the DGW's (already 3 United as it is)

Good info, also considering Verthongen instead of Valencia. And also Alli instead of Mahrez. Yes I know but I still think he can score and I want him for GW 37.

            Son - Mahrez - Salah - Willian - Gross
            Vardy - Auba - Barnes
