Captain Poll – Gameweek 36

While tonight’s Goodison Park clash between Everton and Newcastle concludes Gameweek 35, our sights are already set on the next batch of fixtures with the launch of the latest Captain Poll to canvass your views on the best armband options.

Newly crowned PFA Player of the Year and Golden Boot race leader Mohamed Salah (10.6) topped the poll last time out and is set to once again be a popular captaincy candidate, having delivered his 31st goal of the campaign at the weekend at West Brom.

The Liverpool winger’s home fixture on Saturday lunchtime against Stoke, another relegation-embattled side, also looks enticing. On the road the Potters have managed just two clean sheets and shipped 37 goals, with only West Ham (42) conceding more on their travels.

Interest could be slightly muted amid concerns around Salah’s pitch time, with the Potters’ clash sandwiched in between Liverpool’s two Champions League semi-final ties against Roma. However, given that there are four days between the Stoke match and return trip to Italy, the Egyptian is expected to retain his starting berth once again.

It’s worth noting that he has already delivered two goals and 13 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points against the Potters in just 23 minutes off the bench in Gameweek 14.

Roberto Firmino (9.6) could earn a recall to Liverpool’s starting XI after being a substitute against the Baggies. The Brazilian has blanked just once in his last six at Anfield, tallying four goals and a pair of assists in that stretch.

Sadio Mane (9.5) provides another alternative – he has started every league match since Gameweek 21, scoring six and assisting a further five along the way. The Senegal international has blanked just twice in his last eight outings.

A home clash with Watford means that Harry Kane (12.8) will go head-to-head with Salah for our armband attentions.

The Hornets arrive in dire defensive form on the road, conceding nine times in their last three away fixtures.

That bodes well for Kane as he looks to vanquish a run of form that has delivered just a single goal in six league appearances.

At home, he knocks Salah into second spot for shots (101 to 82), efforts in the box (64 to 61) and attempts on target, by 43 to 40.

Kane is currently the most popular player in the FPL transfer market, attracting more than 37,000 new owners.

In midfield, there’s no shortage of options. Christian Eriksen (9.5) has fired four goals in as many Gameweeks, while Dele Alli (9.0)’s strike against Manchester United in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat should also attract attention. He has three goals and a trio of assists in his last five in the league.

Son Heung-min is the third most sold midfielder ahead of Saturday’s deadline, yet boasts a fine home record. The South Korean has served up nine goals and five assists at Wembley, compared with three goals and two assists on his travels.

Manchester City have already scooped the Premier League title but, on the evidence of their performance against Swansea yesterday, they don’t lack the motivation to attack. Five goals without replay against the Welsh side could sway voting their way ahead of their trip to West Ham.

Gabriel Jesus (10.2) looks a likely starter up front, while Sergio Aguero continues his recovery from minor surgery. He had a particularly eventful game against the Swans with a goal, assist and penalty miss. Nonetheless, it’s now three goals and as many assists in four starts for the Brazilian.

Raheem Sterling (8.9) also impressed on Sunday, claiming a goal and assist on his way to 11 points. With returns in each of the last six run-outs, he drops by the London Stadium in sensational form and is currently the most bought midfielder.

Another Sky Blues option voters may consider is David Silva (8.2), who has assisted more goals than any of his team-mates on the road (seven) and has also found the net six times, a tally only Sterling can better (seven). It is also worth noting that four of the Spaniard’s six scores of 10 points or more have come away from the Etihad Stadium.

West Ham have been in obliging mood recently, shipping four to Arsenal on Sunday and 13 over their last six league encounters, with only Bournemouth conceding more (14).

The Gunners fielded a strong side in that Hammers clash but look likely to rotate when they drop by Old Trafford on Sunday, as it falls between their two Europa League semi-final ties with Atletico Madrid. This could see Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku (11.5) prove popular among voters, especially after registering four goals and an assist over his last six home league run outs.

Alexis Sanchez (11.5)’s headed goal against Spurs in the FA Cup at the weekend also puts him in the reckoning as he prepares to square up to his former club for the first time. The Chilean has a goal and three assists over his last four in the league and faces a Gunners’ side that have lost five straight road trips.

For those looking for a reliable differential captain, it is worth noting that Burnley’s Ashley Barnes (5.4) goes into his home match with his former side Brighton in exceptional form. The striker has scored and earned bonus points in six of his last eight league starts, while the Seagulls have only one clean sheet over their last six away matches.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 36 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Mo Salah or No Salah?

In my opinion this is a key question for the last 3 gameweeks of the season now that he's not in my team post Free Hit.

Surely there must be plenty of other fantasy managers stuck with this dilemma, especially those who took the risk and ditched him on WC when he didn't have a DGW in 34 etc.

Yes, it seems crazy to go without him. However, with no upcoming double gameweek, two CL semis, Chelsea his only fixture in the double, funds being an issue (after losing so much value by selling him), and Kane being a great captaincy choice this week (when Salah plays a relegation threatened Stoke), going without Salah may be a real possibility. Thoughts?

This is the week I'm scared. Boring transfer in 38 but you'll need him back. If you haven't sold already, I'd stick.

      1. Forza Juventus
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 17 days ago

Yes, i think it's very likely i'll get him in for 38, probably as part of a last gasp hit paired with a differential as i'll be chasing still. That said, I'm strongly considering going without for Stoke and Chelsea. This is in order to save my transfer and have 2 FT's next week for the DGW whilst simultaneously avoiding a hit(s) and allowing me to setup a much better team for the double.

      • 6 Years

If you currently own him, have him for: 36, 37, 38.

If you don’t own him, have him for: 38.

However current non-owners, like myself, will be aware that non ownership in any GW could sting. Unfortunately I have other areas to address and can not afford extra hits.

      1. Forza Juventus
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 17 days ago

Yep, as a non owner I think I'll end up only owning him in 38 now, but the fear of the Stoke game is not ideal at all. Even the Chelsea game he could easily score as he seems to score on anyone. Especially as for Chelsea that's a must win to keep any morsel of a magical top 4 dream alive (albeit them getting top 4 is super unlikely) which means they can't just go there and defend and play cagey.

He'll play an hour this week and brace, pool qualify for next season's CL, Salah rested till 38.

That's how I see it unfolding but I'm a terrified non-owner this weekend

          1. Forza Juventus
            • 9 Years
            6 years, 17 days ago

Unfortunately they don't mathematically qualify for CL by beating Stoke, only if Chelsea fail to beat Swansea. Plus he's trying to break the all time premier league single season scoring record so i don't know if Klopp will rest him much at all, he will play but get subbed off early I assume. I assume he will probably want to break it by as many goals as possible. Klopp should rest him, not convinced he will though. Terrified non-owner as well.

So having played FH last week, I've returned to my prior team as expected. But since this is sort of one-week wildcard, I originally expected that FH changes wouldn't affect prices. This didn't appear to be the case, of course.

I should have asked more than a week ago, of course, but it didn't really occur to me that it would be otherwise. Is it viewed as, say, the cost of doing business?

    Thanks for any light shed.

You have the players you had, at their current values. Their values weren't going to be protected during your FH any more than you are now able to get Jesus for his GW34 price 😉

Yeah, would certainly have played the chip anyway.

And I knew I'd get my prior week's players back at current prices, but naively thought those prices would not be affected by changes due to FH players, rather than the 'regular' to and fro. Now I know that's not the case.

      Cheers for the responses, gents.

Is Alonso's time in your team up for this season?

He's suspended for 36 and now there's a threat of Emerson getting some game time in GW37 as he has done well the last few games.

On the flip-side Emerson's emergence could spur him on and he's still the most attacking defender in the game.

Depends on how long you have been playing and how much experience you have.

To finish 500k in your first season would be good imo given there are over 5.5m players now.

Personally, given how many people now play this game, I think top 100k is a terrific achievement.

Sat at 90k, I’d like to say 100k.

Realistically you need to be in the top 50k.

Top 1% surely can't be bad.

So that would be anywhere inside the top 59k.

There's too much variance even over 38 gameweeks to answer the question based on one season - there's people in my main ML who clearly don't know what they're doing and are top 2k, and those who I respect a lot who are 500k. I'm up to 220k after one of the most frustrating seasons ever, feel like I've made overall better moves than last year (26k) but the points just haven't followed .

Very frustrating when it's not going well.

2nd year playing, was 371k last year and right now (with Baines and Perez to play) sitting on 12,915. Having a good year.
I’d say top 125k would be considered successful given the amount of players ...

Have Lukaku and Kane who both have double GW37, and are nailed pretty much every GW, but Jesus is just so tempting...

Don't see why he wouldn't be nailed. Didn't start against United when the league wasn't secure for tactical purposes, think he's guaranteed now the games mean little. He's fit, no competition...

Always liable to be taken off after 65 mins though.

You’d sell Romelu ahead of the DGW?

Alonso is understandably an easy option, considering he misses 1 of the remaining 4 matches.

I'm keeping Mahrez for the DGW - can't afford to change him and field 11 DGW players otherwise. Earlier in the season I would have done it.

I originally intended on keeping, with his 2 DGWs playing a part in bringing him in. But his underperforming and poor final fixtures make him very sellable.

Did some calculations and worked out that my transfer dealings have cost me roughly 80 points this season.
          Notes for next season:
-No sideways moves, Sterling 13 pointer to Sane (C) 1 pointer was a killer!
-Don't ditch injured players for one week, numerous fails with losing value on Salah and ditching Kane for a Lacazette captain fail.
-More patience with underperforming assets such as Sterling, Eriksen, Son at various times through season.
-Braindead moves, transferred in Niasse when he was suspended.
-Less gambling, Kanexit cost me roughy 50-60 points and had to wildcard early to sort out the mess.
-Don't preempt a change in form or go for an alternative for the sake of it, got in vardy for Firmino before a run of duble digit hauls and went Stones over Otamendi so never got his goals.
-Too many wasted transfers on defenders, lower ceiling to repay these moves, will stick with defenders loner each year.
-Held a transfer for a week maybe 3 times all season, shows how badly I've managed my team in that there was always moves to make.
-Over 100 points hit this year, must manage risk better.

Maybe I will learn from these mistakes. As a relatively new member to the FFS community I would value any input. What lessons did you learn from early mistakes when you first started playing the game seriously?
