Yusuf Sheikh wins FPL Crown

Yusuf Sheikh has claimed the Fantasy Premier League crown in the closest and most dramatic title race in memory.

The Tanzanian manager sealed his unlikely victory by six points from Fantasy Football Scout member Paul Gee, with long-time leader Bharat Dhody third.

Yusuf was ranked sixth before Sunday, some 33 points behind Bharat at the top.

As such, we had not included him in our earlier round-up of the top five contenders.

And when Marcos Alonso, Dele Alli and Gabriel Jesus were unexpectedly benched, he must have all but written off his chances of challenging for the crown.

But Yusuf’s final day performance was nothing short of remarkable from start to finish.

His final tally of 93 points was some 23 ahead of Paul in second and, incredibly, surpassed Bharat’s Gameweek total by 41.

A Triple Captain chip undoubtedly played a key role in his late surge as he was the only manager in the top ten to still have a chip remaining.

However, Yusuf’s decision to use this on Mohamed Salah had, initially, looked unwise, given that six other managers in the top ten also captained the Egyptian.

They included both Bharat and Paul.

So while Salah helped Yusuf to a 11-point advantage over that pair, the midfielder was by no means the key player in Sunday’s matches.

It was his differentials who really delivered.

That started with Marcus Rashford, who struck an early goal to hand Yusuf an initial boost. No other manager in the top ten owned the Man United striker.

Salah’s goal was then followed by an assist to help Yusuf gain a further edge via his Triple Captain. However, it was surely Lukasz Fabianski’s penalty save at the Liberty Stadium, just a minute later, that catapulted him into contention.

At that point Paul Gee had established a lead, thanks to clean sheets from Burnley pair Matt Lowton and James Tarkowski.

A goal from Wilfried Zaha – a Gameweek 38 signing for Aaron Ramsey – then re-ignited Yusuf’s charge, before the Clarets conceded at Turf Moor to topple Paul from the summit.

With Fabianski, Rashford and Zaha furthering their role as differentials with bonus points, Yusuf also benefited from DeAndre Yedlin’s clean sheet from his bench as both Alonso and Ben Davies failed to be given minutes.

That ensured victory over Paul by just eight points once the bonus points were confirmed.

With 73 points on the day, the runner-up can count himself unfortunate to miss out when Burnley’s clean sheet points were cruelly lost in the closing stages.

Paul’s decision to sell Alli for Salah proved a canny move, but it was ultimately not enough to fire him to the title, having started Sunday 20 points off the pace.

Meanwhile Bharat – who had led the way since Gameweek 21 – suffered an early blow when the teamsheets were revealed.

He was missing seven players, either with injuries or through being benched.

His decision to sell Mahrez, and not Alli, for Salah might also haunt him. The Algerian’s 13 points would have seen him tied at the top, though total transfers (43 v 41) would have eventually settled it in Yusuf’s favour regardless.

And nobody can deny the new champion his glory.

To produce 93 points on the final day – some 23 more than any other rival in the top ten – is a remarkable achievement, and one deserving of winning the FPL crown.

Congratulations to Yusuf on his win, and to all the challengers who helped to produce such a memorable day.

We hope to have further reaction, including interviews with the top managers, over the next few days.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Final Rank - 46,491. This was my third season & I discovered FFS during 2016-17 season.
I'm a bit disappointed with my rank as I was aiming for a higher finish but there's always next season!
Thank You FFS & all the members for all the great advice throughout the season. 🙂

Will be back for the WC Fantasy!

What do you actually win for winning the whole FPL? Is there a cash prize, or is it just prestige?

A hell of a lot of it is perseverence and common sense. Make sure to set your team in all 38 matchdays, save your chips & WCs. Do that and you're already ahead of about 80% of cash ML players.

Gotta love when you are winning a public mini league for most of the season until some guy from Nepal with a final rank of 240 joins. Is there not an option for leagues that nobody can join after week one?
One thing I hate about fantasy is that the organisers of leagues done give a crap about it after the first week.

It was closer than the margin suggests, all to play for in GW37, only 20pt gap both on TC (Kane for me, Jesus for him). His chip strategy, or lack of ultimately denied him: FH31 WC36 TC37 BB38 was a massive fail.

Curtains have finally come down on my worst fpl season to date. Dropped from 23k last season to 719k!! Key lessons learnt this season:

    1. Patience sometimes does not pay. Put too much faith on some heavy hitters and ended up being burned
    2. Points over $$$. I've made some pretty knee-jerk transfers just to avoid price drops and they have had a 90% fail rate.
    3. The Triple Captain chip is allergic to me. 3 seasons in now and I have never gotten a return from it!!! Even when I waited to play it in a double gameweek for the first time I still got burned!! (I'm looking at you, Raheem)

    Looking forward to next season

These "lessons" are pretty pointless out of context, I'd say patience is possibly the biggest reason I've had success this season. Also a season isn't won or lost on TC - I got 2*3 for Sanchez in 34 and finished 238th.

The heavy hitters one is interesting. There is always a huge bias on here to fitting in as many expensive players as possible, often at the expense of the squad as a whole. Gonna try as hard as possible to only get players under 10 mill next year, except for Salah of course!

Good in the end, but with Swans conceding & Davies benched it did not look good for a while.

Won a mini league that had a free meal as the prize - I just need to get to Gibraltar to claim it.

FH chip was available for the first ever time and I think we will see a different use of it next season, but more to do with using chips in relation to each other (WCDGW & BB) rather than just which GW is best.

Feels like a nasty hangover this morning. Had a horrendous final gw score in the 40s and dropped from 16k to 31k. Looking forward to some time off now, buying the membership and doing things better next time.
For now, I don't want to hear or think fpl and I am hoping that I can ignore fantasy wc and actually enjoy the football. Having worked in Russia and knowing some of the language makes it interesting too - I could never wait to get back to Europe frankly though 🙂

Thanks to all the help here and its been a blast. Will check in over the wc and of course be chief amongst spreading transfer rumours 🙂

Knowledge is over-rated. Some on here are clearly clueless but have great ranks due to doing what the community tells them after posting RMTs and questions every 5 minutes. Just shows that the community wisdom is much stronger now and maybe the old guard who think for themselves need to evolve their approach.

Cash leagues are predominantly set up by a group of friends. It's basically gambling, you all stick £50 in and say you're the best and then winner takes all or top 3 or top 5 depending on number of players you have.

    Season - Points - Rank
    2012/13 1,795 1,017,794
    2013/14 2,060 801,382
    2014/15 1,848 854,311

    2016/17 1,951 861,392
    2017/18 2,299 14,921

Gutted I missed out on top 10K after flirting with it these last few gameweeks but I guess I shouldn't be so hard on myself. Would like to think I'm no longer a casual as I stuck to it start to finish this season.

Burnley conceding two cost me 11 points (plus bonus) and took a -4 for Martial who I then captained (granted I would've only had Son and his one point) but those 16 points cost me a top 10K OR finish. 48 transfers made in total.

Not really, you changed your team the least, you weren't just swapping out of form players for in form players and hoping they outscore the -4 each transfer cost you.

Why would changing your team the least make you a better manager, probably means you have been lucky with injuries, suspensions. And in taking hits you are already being deducted 4 points, no need to penalise further.

It's effectively their way of calculating goal difference. (Which is what I think they should actually base it off of, doesn't head-to-head work this way?). Either way you picked a team at the start of the season that you thought was going to do the best (for 100M) and it did and you changed it less than the other guy.

Also lets be honest the majority of managers making changes aren't frequently making changes due to injury or suspension (and that's also what you have a bench for).

Maybe the detraction points are quite high but when you have someone like Richarlison who consistently wastes opportunities why should he get a bonus point when he is scuppering chances?

I agree. Seems to be no logic in that. I've lost a ML due to transfers made

        I think its backwards.
If you match a player despite more hits, you've done better.
Plus, it discourages people from playing more actively.
Should work the other way round.

I have to disagree here, yes you managed to effectively change your team out to get the best results but their argument or case point is that it's about trying to find that team that will cope with as much as the season as possible. Having faith in the players you initially picked or who are in your squad.

What would you like to see as an alternative? Rather than everyone picking the current ruling apart is anyone willing to offer a solution/alternative?

Should go on something else, like goals scored by your players or points not including captains.

I think H2H is done on goal difference or scored, I don't play it so I can't be sure, but the caveat here is what about managers who focus on picking up points from clean sheets or who load up on set piece takers for assist points?

My worst FPL season ever in terms of overall rank. Considering skipping any Fantasy World Cup to think long and hard about how to improve for next season*

Is playing TC more assured in the final GW38 versus the double GWs? The tactic contributed to 2 of my rival's strategies, one beat me using it. Yusuf Sheikh used this to aid victory.

Above all it seems the likely captain candidates seem to play without pressure on the final GWs, with league positions typically done and dusted, maybe a world or euro cup to audition for, a golden boot to chase, giving an end of season send off, and exhibition levels of performance on display. Whilst DGWs offer doubling up, player pressure and rotation have definitely shown their impacts this season.

For me eyeing up final GW fixtures and potential captaincy candidates will definitely be one of my early season considerations going forward.

Tiny sample size and natural variance. If Liverpool had gone a bit further in the FA Cup, that Watford game would have been one half of a double...
