Our World Cup planning picked up pace yesterday after FIFA launched their official Fantasy game for this summer’s tournament.

The discussion on site, as well as Hot Topics and Members tables, mainly focussed on Russia 2018 as Fantasy managers start to firm up their plans ahead of next Thursday’s big kick-off.

There was also chat on the Premier League’s decision to announce a winter break from 2019/20 earlier today, while the World Cup Friendlies Community Tournament approaches it’s mid-point.

The Hottest Topics

After Jose Mourinho made his first move in the transfer market, we pondered Fred’s potential impact on Manchester United, also canvassing thoughts on your club’s transfer dealings so far.

Stoichkov#8 helped us look forward to the World Cup as round two of the Community Tournament for World Cup friendlies kicked off last weekend.

McNulty also gave us a helping hand in our quest for World Cup Fantasy points, posting the odds for teams remaining unbeaten in the group stage.

And G-Whizz was another to aid our defensive strategy with a look at World Cup 2018 clean sheet odds,Tommytour was keen to discuss transfer plans for the FIFA game.

FFFrøg mulled over the ever-crucial captaincy strategy for the FIFA game, assessing how best to spread captaincy options to maximize chances of a big haul.

Earlier today, KunTheMan also sparked a very handy assessment of the best bargain options available and Hodor offered a new perspective on squad selection, suggesting that strength on the bench can be overlooked.

Finally, our editor, David, also updated us with the news that the Premier League will introduce a winter break in 2019/20 as other, including Mark, gave their view on the potential domestic impact.

Members Tables this week featured one of our own, with J0E looking at World Cup Goalscorers from the World Cup qualification data, as well as World Cup Talismen, players who are the most involved in their team’s attack.

Elsewhere, FPLVirgin looked at World Cup teams’ chances of getting clean sheets.

The Community Tournaments

Stoichkov#8’s World Cup Friendlies Community Tournament hit the halfway point on Thursday with the conclusion of Gameweek 4, with Gameweek 5 not yet complete at the time of writing.

At the halfway point, Rony1993 has pulled seven points ahead of a chasing pack, which includes five managers who are split by only four points.

There’s work to be done for those below sixth, but with it so close at the top the use of differentials could break the table up significantly.

FFFrøg has started a Community Tournament for the World Cup Fantasy game, and is taking applications now.

Community members will join a nation and play as a team against others. The game will follow the group stages and then the knockout format of the real tournament, with 96 spots initially available.

    On my Mac the Fifa McD's Fantasy game is not working correctly on Chrome. It's not showing player names on the right side of the screen when I try to pick a team. Anyone else having this problem? Safari seems to work fine.

    Thought I’d go for an early RMT
    Bench Boost in GW2 and Wildcard QF onwards when more games played at one time.
    G: Neuer, Uzoho
    Can play both for hopefully a clean sheet from one of them.
    D: Godin, Carvajal, Tagliafico, Miranda, Meunier.
    Five solid defenders from four game days. Great to have Meunier as my reserve!
    M: Samedov (C), Isco, Rodriguez, C Sanchez, Guzman.
    Samedov one Russian who scores goals and assists as a Captain on day one could be a differential and surprised he is overlooked as much as he is. Isco and Rodriguez speak for themselves. JRod gives me a 6th good captain choice - one each day. Last two bench fodder but will play. Could do with a better 4.5 than Guzman really though.
    F: Cavani, Jesus, Lukaku.
    Need I say more about the forward line! All could score well

      A nice team - quite similar to mine. Tagliafico unlikely to get you any points as Argentina unlikely to keep cleanies, Neuer potentially the same as Germany haven't kept a clean sheet for a while now. Not wild on spending 7.5m on Samedov given how diabolically sh** Russia are.

          Not imo - if I was going for a Germany defender I'd go for him but Germany have kept 2 clean sheets in their last 10 games and Mexico and Sweden are both decent sides

        Cheers. I still have 0.5 in the bank so could double up in defence on Uruguay if I go Neuer to Muslera giving me 1.0 to improve either Guzman to a 5.5 midfielder to bench boost in GW2 or improve Samedov to the likes of Paulinho.

          I'm doubling up on Uruguay as are many others - perhaps the saftest option for clean sheets going. I'd try to upgrade Guzman to a decent 5/5.5m option and go for another 7/7.5m - maybe Grosicki or Ziyech.

              If being a key point there - he plays a decent Saudi team first game then a very defensive Egypt team second. I'd say there's no point having someone like him who's a captaincy option simply for the sake of having one, he's not realistically going to get you a big haul like Cavani, Jesus or Kaku could get within your team for example.

      Double France will come back to bite you, Griezmann not worth the million over Mbappe if you want a France attacking asset but with the potential rotation and tough games against Peru and Denmark I'd avoid. If you fancy Hazard over Lukaku, go for it. Coutinho not worth the price tag for me, you'd be better to stretch to Muller or Eriksen. Ryan not worth the money over Ozoho (or whatever he's called) and will likely concede a few each game. Casemiro and Kouyate both not worth the money they cost over 4.5m, either write off those spots or get some decent cheaper options in with genuine attacking threat.

    Hello guys.

    Been quite a long since I was last here - many of you wont even know me.
    I quit midway through 2016/17 and didn't play 2017/18 Fantasy - college to job life transition one of the reasons among many. And so I stopped coming here too.

    Things have settled now - planning to come back next season, and now seems a good time to come back here as any. Been in touch with quite a few of you on Twitter - but missed this place in general.

      A valiant effort to get Messi in there, which is something I've considered myself, but it comes at the expense of a half decent defense. Trippier and Cahill are both rotation risks and as much as I love this green and pleasant land I don't see us keeping two clean sheets, even to Tunisia and Panama. Russia's defence has more holes than a colander and double Nigeria defence is going to end in tears with their fixtures. I think Messi will top score, but you've got to take the value off for that at striker or in the midfield, because that defense will ruin you imo.

        Messi probably not worth 12 mil on Gw 1 alone. One of the big reasons I have him is that he allows me to switch to Neymar, Ronaldo and Kane (who all have brilliant GW2 fixtures) should one explode and look essential.

          I can understand that, but be cautious that it could well backfire. I think Neymar and Messi will have brilliant tournaments but I don't see the same happening for Ronaldo and Kane plays for, well, England. I'd probably keep Messi and use your transfers elsewhere if you want a 12m striker.

      This is the opposite problem to the team above. There's far too much money in that defence, meaning your midfield suffers and de Arrascaeta is just not good enough to take up one of the very valuable forward slots. Balance is key.

          The problem with that is that the best players in this game and the highest scorers will be strikers aside from a few exceptions, such as James in 2014. That 5.5m slot should genuinely be a midfielder to allow you to play a strong three up front.

          Maybe I'm just stuck in my ways but I haven't owned him for a big tourney before and I haven't missed anything, despite his awesome qualifying campaigns. He always seems to fail to show up when needed for his country and this is not a great Poland side. I think there are better options.
