World Cup 2018 – Team Analysis – Germany

Germany’s ability to share goals around their midfield and rotated strikers means that the best source of Fantasy returns in their squad is actually in defence.

Full-backs Joshua Kimmich and Jonas Hector look almost essential investments for World Cup Fantasy managers this summer.

Meanwhile, the positional classification of the experienced Thomas Muller demands our attention too.

ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

It is hard not to expect Germany to put up a strong defence of their World Cup title earned in Brazil four years ago. Joachim Low’s men won every single qualifying match and ended that campaign with a goal difference of +39. In ten fixtures they found the net a whopping 43 times, averaging 4.3 goals scored per game and they conceded just four. In the middle of qualifying, a mostly second-string squad was sent to Russia to contest the 2017 Confederations Cup and won the tournament at a canter.

Everything Germany needs to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups is at Low’s disposal. Those who have retired from international duty since the last finals have been replaced by players at their peak, the current squad has a healthy contingent of former winners and Low now has quality cover in virtually every position. Such is Germany’s strength in depth, Low was able to leave behind Leroy Sane who had his best ever club season in 2017/18 scoring 10 goals and assisting another 15 with Manchester City.

Low has alternated between 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3 formations of late and has his team operate with a high-press, quick counter-attack, accurate passing and good movement off the ball. The defence is comfortable in possession too while his wide players are very good at cutting inside. As ever, Germany look a well-oiled machine ready to do the business in Russia.

The only blotches on an otherwise perfect pre-World Cup report card are the fitness and form of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and the team’s record in recent friendlies. Neuer missed nearly all of the 2017/18 season campaign with a broken foot and only returned to international duty this month. The 32-year-old shot-stopper couldn’t stop Die Mannshaft suffering a 2-1 defeat to Austria in his first game back, and in five 2018 friendlies they’ve drawn three times and been beaten twice. If history has taught us anything, though, it’s that these results will mean nothing by the time Germany kick off against Mexico on June 17. They know exactly how to get mistakes out of their game before it really matters.

UEFA QUALIFYING

Most starts: Joshua Kimmich (10), Thomas Muller (9), Jonas Hector, Mats Hummels (both 8), Julian Draxler, Toni Kroos (both 7).

Most goals: Muller (5), Draxler, Leon Goretzka, Timo Werner (all 3), Kimmich, Hector, Sami Khedira, Mario Gomez (all 2).

Most assists: Kimmich (9), Muller (7), Hector, Mesut Ozil (both 4).

THE KEY TARGETS

In a squad where goals are very much shared around the team, it can be hard to find clear-cut Fantasy options. That’s where defender Joshua Kimmich (£6.5m on McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy) comes in to show off his involvement in a whopping 11 goals during qualifying. The Bayern Munich full-back’s marauding runs and advanced positions saw him score twice and assist nine times. No player from any position was the provider for more goals in Europe during qualifying. Add into the equation the strong clean sheet potential from six shut-outs in UEFA Group C and Kimmich really is an essential Fantasy asset for the World Cup.

Kimmich’s importance is matched by compatriot Thomas Muller (£9.5m) who involved himself in 12 of Germany’s qualifying goals, more than any other team-mate. Five were scored himself with another seven contributions coming in the form of assists. Not only is the Bayern Munich forward priced relatively modestly, he has also been classified as a midfielder on McDonalds, allowing him to earn extra points for goals and also receive clean sheet bonuses too. For a player with such World Cup pedigree, he scored five times at both the 2010 and 2014 tournaments, it would be remiss of Fantasy managers not to consider including Muller in their squads given his classification and price.

On the opposite flank to Kimmich is Jonas Hector (£6.5m) who also offers excellent Fantasy potential. The attacking Cologne left-back netted twice in qualifying and assisted four goals, the same number as creative midfielder Mesut Ozil (£9.0m). Hector has only started two of the last five friendlies but was an important player in qualification and should hold onto his place for the opener against Mexico.

The aforementioned Ozil has found his way back into Joachim’ Low’s favour since qualification ended, making him another key target. The Arsenal man has started four of the last five friendlies, scoring and assisting across those appearances. During qualification he was only named in the first XI five times but was still able to score once and assist four goals in 434 minutes of football. That’s a goal involvement every 86.8 minutes, so with Ozil’s increased chance of game-time at the World Cup and his role as the set-piece taker, he could be a steady source of Fantasy points.

THE LONG SHOTS

With five goals in qualifying not enough to earn Sandro Wagner a place in the squad, it is difficult to predict who will start up front for Germany. Timo Werner (£9.5m) and Mario Gomez (£8.5m) have been competing for the position and both offer vastly different attributes. The quicker and more mobile Werner scored three goals from two qualifying starts and featured from the beginning in three of the last five friendlies, adding another goal. The 22-year-old forward is in fantastic club form having scored 34 times in 63 Bundesliga appearances for RB Leipzig too. Gomez is the more experienced of the two and offers strength and height instead, netting twice from two qualifying starts and on the scoresheet eight times in 16 league appearances since joining Stuttgart in January. Werner’s spell in the side between November and March might suggest he has the upper hand although he’s not started since then, while Gomez was given the nod against Brazil.

Julian Draxler (£8.5m) is an important player having started seven qualifiers and four of the friendlies since a place in Russia was booked. The Paris Saint Germain midfielder scored three times in UEFA Group C and assisted once. What makes him more of a ‘long shot’ than a ‘key target’ is the fact that Draxler hasn’t contributed to a goal since qualifying ended and even then he was substituted off in five matches during that stage of the competition.

Goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen (£5.5m) is highly thought of by Low and could easily start ahead of Manuel Neuer (£6.0m), who has made just one start for the national team this season. Should the Barcelona man get the nod he is a slightly cheaper way of investing in Germany’s defence.

Rotation at centre-back makes Mats Hummels (£6.0m) the only one certain of a start in Russia. Both Antonio Rudiger (£5.5m) and Niklas Sule (£5.0m) have started games while Jerome Boateng (£6.0m) has been out injured, but the latter has started two friendlies and is pushing for a return to regular appearances in time for Russia.

Anyone seen a really good, well thought through McMuffin WC fantasy team yet?

Asking for a particularly lazy friend, who can’t be bothered doing any background analysis on game, teams or players (because he’s still knackered from last season), but wants to start well so when the tournament gets going he can get a bit more interested.

That friend is me. My only friend.

Get that expensive Morocco mid, Samedov, cheapies like Kostic and Cueva. Expensive forwards and relatively cheap defence. Use bench boost and wildcard after if you do well and start taking the game seriously then.

Premium attacking options are realistically the only ones that are going to score any meaningful points. That defence is very strong and Neymar will likely do very well but you've only got 4 top attackers when it should be very possible to have 5.

I think that it`s not worth to have Isco/Cout, when you already have 3-4 heavy hitters to captain and can have very solid def options with attacking potential. What`s your thoughts?

Navas - Costa Rica play Brazil in week two...
Maguire and Trippier - both massive rotation risks and England will likely concede to Tunisia
Coutinho - not the best attacking option in that team by a long way.
Griezmann - not the talisman of an average and dysfunctional team and the same price as Lukaku
No bench - when 2/3 of those players inevitably blank you have no one to replace them with.
                Go home, you're drunk.

Hi, Is Carrasco nailed on for Belgium?

I am thinking about downgrading KDB to Carrasco and upgrading Ansenio to Isco

More comparing Asensio to Isco, and Carrasco's output compared to KDB is very similar recently for the NT.

He is not competing with any of those guys as he's nominally a wingback in their system.

In which case Meunier would be a much better buy, no? Cheaper, more points for clean sheets and goals, and playing the opposite side... Unless Carrasco is just more attacking?

              Opinions on:

              Muslera Uzoho
              Kimmich Meunier Sidibe Hegazy Advincula
Isco Müller Golovin C. Sanchez Kostic
              Jesus Cavani Lukaku

              Main things I don’t like:
No strong captain for France/Argentina match day
Cavani and Jesus may be second fiddle to Suarez and Neymar. Mostly worried with Jesus as Neymar is usually excellent. Option would be downgrade Muller and get Neymar in.

                Possible option:
                Muller > Nandez
                Jesus > Neymar
                Cavani > Suarez

              MANAGER SUBSTITUTIONS WITHIN A ROUND:
After all matches on a single day have finished and before the next Round of matches start, you can:

Change your captain (if he was not sent off) with a player from your squad whose team is yet to play.

So that means you could end up with 2 or 3 captains in the same round?

Uruguay's De Arrascaeta is apparently nailed on, but plays as an attacking mid despite being listed as a forward.
                  Potentially a bargain.

Here's my current squad and an explanation of every pick, because I'm bored. Feel free to disagree/ comment/ tear it to shreds.

Alisson - Brazil's defence is very solid under Tite and he has two nice games against Switzerland, who will park the bus and characteristically struggle to score against big teams, and Costa Rica, who failed to score against England's second string last night.
Uzoho - 4m starting goalkeeper. 'Nuff said.

Meunier - Essentially plays as a right winger and plays Panama and Tunisia in a very attacking side.
Danilo - see Alisson - 1m cheaper than Marcelo.
Godin - Goal threat and easy games in a very defensively sound side. No goals conceded in their last 3 (Czechia, Wales, Uzbekistan)
Varela - same defense as Godin, but 1m cheaper. Risk of rotation because of injury so may change.
Dalsgaard - starting right back for Denmark, who play Australia gw2. 4.5m.

Isco - recently scored a hattrick against Argentina, nailed on goal/ assist threat against an aged Portugal defence and then Iran.
James - plays last day and plays a poor Japan side with a new manager and a previously defensively weak Poland side without their key centre back. Also on penalties, free kicks and corners.
Ziyech - On penalties, free kicks and plays Iran first game. Over a goal every other game for his country.
Carrasco - Attacking threat who will play basically as a left-winger in the first two (very nice) games.
                4.5m - Bench fodder

Cavani - Great scoring record in qualifying, two very nice games and 1m cheaper than Suarez.
Jesus - The main centre forward for a great attacking side. Tite loves him and he got 7 in 10 in qualifying.
Lukaku - The main goalscoring threat (11 in qualifying). A flat track bully in a flat track bully side with easy games. Goalfest.

14 active players, with the aim to transfer out Ziyech after the first game. Thoughts?

                  Alisson -> Muslera

Also I think Kimmich is a must. I would play 5-2-3 formation with one of Isco or James making the way for more premium defenders.

Solid, I'm sure I had a similar team in one of my many drafts. I changed because I had no good coverage from the Argentina/France which means no good captain pick that day as well as missing out on potentially 2 good sides (Flawed sides I know, but potentially strong).
As long as you are ok with that it's a strong team.
And Ziyech feels like a fantasy red herring if ever I saw one. That game looks like a nil-nil-er

My approach is more to go all in on sides that I can almost guarantee will perform. I really am not a fan of Argentina or France, certainly looking past gw1. Ziyech is an interesting one - could well blank, but I can't see a 7m option I prefer for that first week and then it gives me some leeway to bring in a similar prospect for gw2.

I would spread the defence between more countries, Kimmich is a must have.
Alisson will get CS but you can find cheaper keepers that will get a couple CS too and saves potential
I'm not that convinced about Isco, Portuguese CBs may be old but they conceed very few chances to opponents
If price was the same would you get Suarez instead of Cavani?

This is a BB in gw 1, all in on Morocco. 1 hit in gw 2 and WC in GW 3

                Muslera , Monir (Morocco)
Trippier , Meunier , Hakimi and Saiss (Morocco) Varela - yeah , if well
                Paulinho , Cueva , C Sanchez , J Rod , Carrasco
                Kun , Hazard , Mitrovich

                Any obvious holes ?

I don't quite see the logic behind tripling up on Morocco defenders, although I have had Hakimi at points. Iran are a perfectly capable side who will know that game is their only real chance to score/ prove themselves/ get some points. Maybe not the team to triple up on, but then again I could be wrong and you'll end up no1.

It has 0-0 written all over it. Neither would want to lose.

I can see the logic and it was my initial thought. But also both teams know that winning this is their only real chance of getting out of the groups, and both are offensively capable sides. I can see a 2-2 coming as much as I can a 0-0.

Possibly , but both are ultra defensive sides imo and Morocco the better of the two , have to go out on a limb

Cheers Christina good to see you around again.
Yeah but it's just a game and soft spot for Kun
If BB GW 1 Morocco offer the best fillers , what the hell

So when to use the chips?

WC in GW3 is pretty obvious
then maximum captain maybe GW2 when there are many good fixtures like: Uruguay - Saudi Arabia, Iran - Spain, France - Peru, Brazil - Costa Rica, Belgium - Tunisia and England - Panama?
Bench boost for round of 16 with the extra 5mil to play with?

                  Why is WC GW3 obvious?
GW2 also looks good with fixture swings for Portugal and Spain.
Uruguay and Germany also better from GW2 imo.
Can select 2-3 Belgium players for GW1 v Panama, Russian ones v Saudi, Morocco cheapies for Iran maybe even Granqvist v Korea (def who scored 3 penalties during qualifiying).

Somewhere in Yaroslavi a 11 yr old Russian girl with pimples will select 2 Russian defenders and Smolov and be top round 1.

Does Dybala get a start now Lanzini is out? Surely they will squeeze him in now?
