Fantasy hopes pinned on Brazil against the Swiss

Brazil and Switzerland bring the curtain down on day four of the 2018 World Cup as they meet in Rostov in the evening kick-off.

The Selecao boast the three most-owned players in McDonald’s FIFA: Marcelo (£6.5m), Neymar (£12.0m) and Philippe Coutinho (£9.0m).

A whopping 44% of Fantasy managers have bought Marcelo – no player is more widely owned – who scored a goal and recorded two assists in qualification and was on target in the November friendly win over Japan.

Neymar, selected by 33% of those playing McDonald’s FIFA,  was directly involved in 15 of Brazil’s goals during World Cup qualification and has scored on a further three occasions in subsequent friendlies.

Only Paolo Guerrero (19) of Peru had more attempts from set-play situations than Neymar (16) in CONMEBOL qualifying.

The 29% of Fantasy managers who own Coutinho will be heartened by his goal in the 10 June friendly win over Austria. The Barcelona playmaker scored on four occasions and set up two goals in qualification, despite only starting eight of Brazil’s matches.

Gabriel Jesus (£9.0m), Brazil’s top goalscorer during qualification, carries the hopes of just 12% of Fantasy bosses, despite being some £3.0m cheaper than Neymar.

Switzerland’s attack-minded full-back pairing of Ricardo Rodriguez and Stephan Lichtsteiner (both £5.5m), who scored six goals between them during qualification, are owned by 2% and 1% of managers respectively.

Hopes will be high for plenty of goals in this Group E encounter: Brazil scored at a rate of 2.3 goals per match during qualification, while Switzerland scored 24 goals in 12 qualifying fixtures – an average of exactly two goals per match.

Brazil’s backline, however, is uncharacteristically mean: the Selecao have not conceded a single goal in their last five friendly internationals (despite facing the likes of Germany, Croatia and England) and their defence was the best in South American qualification (11 goals conceded in 18 fixtures).

The Selecao have a new-found strength in set-play situations, too: four of Brazil’s goals in their six most-recent friendlies were scored directly from corners.

Surrey if it's been discussed already, but why did Mitrovic not get an assist for winning the free kick that Kolarov scored from??

WC game is more simple - they take assists only from official protocol. Mitrovic hasn't got one for himself either.

No assists for winning the free kick - a rule even FPL should consider.

No assists are awarded in McD's game for that. No assists for penos either but player gets 2 points for winning one.

Meza won a penalty but Messi didn't score.. still Meza got 2 points.

It doesn't count as an assist in this game. Only a genuine assist counts as an assist.

For me 8pts is worth the gamble to twist it for Lukaku. Also depends if you have James/Lewa for a final day, in that case you still have a chance even if Kaku blanks.

Would you WC this? I would get rid of El Kajoui, Pavard, Jesus, Ziyach, Cueva, Meza and maybe even James.

    El Kajoui/Uzoho
    Meunier/Danilo/Trippier/Varela/Pavard
    Eriksen/James/Ziyach/Cueva/Meza
    Cavani/Jesus/Lukaku

I get it that you want to sell Pavard & El Kajoui.

But they’re really aren’t any option in the Cueva, Ziyach & Meza bracket. You'll probably need to sell 2 of them for 4.5s and upgrade one to a 9m to make a significant difference.

I would honestly stick with your team and make one transfer.

So is everyone wildcarding this week then?

I honestly can’t make a case for selling any of my players except Werner.

Not many I want to buy except maybe Ronaldo, Costa/Isco & Brazil attacker (but not sure which one).

Think I’m just going to sell Werner and move on to the next round!

I am thinking of taking a hit and doing two transfers. Jesus out for costa will be one. But then am not sure about the second transfer. Would want a Brazilian attacker. From yesterday game I think it should be Coutinho. But if there is some news of firmino starting I’ll be all over him.

The other elephant in the room is Ronaldo. Was he on overdrive because the opponent was Spain? Or is he in beast mode for real?

Bottom line whether wildcard or hits I am not able to make up my mind as there are some interesting choices. On the attacking front.

why wild-carding now is a great idea.
    1. you have a first hand assessment on how teams played towards the defensive or towards the offensive of thier overall game play.
    2. you know which attacking players are the focal point.
    3. rearrange defensive players who do not seemed like a value buy.
    4. you have another wild-card after group stage going into round 16.

    1. Meinhoff
      • 11 Years
      5 years, 10 months ago

      Why it is not

      - before RD 3 we will have even better idea of the actual strength of teams and individual players, that is not based on just one game
      - we will know which teams will have something to play for, chase goal difference etc.
      - injuries happen

understand where you are coming from. but the biggest plus for me is that having a another "wildcard" going into round 16.
my fwd line didnt impress me one bit.
          Neymar/Suarez/Dembele.

Neymar and Suarez vs Costarica and Saudi Arabia, madness to lose any of those two. Dembele on the other hand has to go, with a free transfer

              • 5 Years
              5 years, 10 months ago

Neymar acted more then just playing football. targeted of fouls yes. simple fouls was made to be a big deal.

a couple more misses and Suarez would turn into that crazy ass biter. he was presented with simple chances clearly frustrated with his misses not to mention dented his confidence.

would be much better of with ronaldo/kun(costa)/griez. all are focal point of attack + penalty takers of the team. upside is higher vs the 3 i have.

after the group stage which ever teams made it into the 16 you can "reset" your team with the extra "wildcard".

Is wild card not best used after last 16? I know you get unlimited transfers going IN to last 16 but then after that round going into the Quarters you only get 3, which means you could potentially lose a lot of players with upsets.

To avoid this you’d have to use the unlimited transfers before the last 16 to ensure they go through (aka games you can bank on) but this means 1) 2-3 players per team which is an even bigger risk with only 3 transfers coming up ... 2) you are less able to plan for games in the Quarter finals meaning even after 3 free transfers you look like to lose more players again!

Anyone else saving their Wild Card for between last 16 and last 8?

England are unexpectable and tunisia showed decend form against turkey and portugal ( both ended 2-2), will they draw today too?

Tunisia will sit deep, England won't have a clue how to break them down and could be caught on the break, or get eventually get a bit in inspiration or luck themselves. I see it 0-0 or a low scorer either way.

Belhanda as long as you are sure Meza starting spot is not in danger.

Belhanda. Meza had a decent game, he won't be dropped.

Belgium - Panama is the game I'm most confident in round 1 will be a win. Will genuinely be a huge shock if Belgium don't win. I can see how Switzerland and Mexico got results since both are plucky, decent teams. Iceland a pretty big shock, but this is the one. If Panama get anything out of the game with Belgium this world cup will have reached peak unpredictable standards.

Agreed. I won’t be surprised if Belgium concede though. That defence doesn’t look rock solid to me.

Other surprise will be if England win resoundingly without giving any reason for media to moan.

Anyone want to encourage me to captain Hazard over Lukaku?

          Just trying to be different.

Both have low ownership last time I looked so lets hope they both get 10pts each!

More people will be on Kaku so points swing will be greater that way be it positive or negative.

I actually think even though I scored horribly this week that my team is still in decent knick. What free transfer(s) would you use this week?

    El Kajoui Uzoho
    Meunier, Danilo, Varela, Pavard, Dalsgaard
    Eriksen, JRod, Ziyech, Cueva, Gazinsky
    Messi, Jesus, Lukaku

    Messi > Suarez/Costa/Ronaldo?
2nd transfer of Pavard > Kimmich?

Lukaku plays Tunisia and England so i’d swap him for Costa who plays Morocco and Iran. Then after GW2 you might even have spare cash to make that transfer.

Thought Kimmich had a good game. Also looked at his heatmap and he literally spent 80% of the game in Mexico's half. I can see him scoring big now that Germany have to pull their finger out.

        Maybe not worth.

I’ll say Jesus to costa but can’t see how to fit Coutinho into your team. I am not sold on Kimmich/Germany although I have him.

Eh don't need Coutinho. Could do like Messi + Ziyech > Suarez + Isco for -4pts.

I meant Coutinho more likely to be in points than Jesus. Suarez is a no go for me. Prefer cavani. Costa is a must.

Eriksen now has Australia and France, his 'easy' game is out of the way and Denmark are not that great.

On paper that was their easiest fixture, it stiffen up now so don't see Denmark having it any easier.

Peru and Mexico have been my favourite teams in this so far.

On paper Australia is the worst team in that group without doubt. Peru have had good results recently and are ranked highly. I think they showed why. I have a feeling Denmark might make more chances vs France than they did against Peru.

Australia made life very difficult for the French who are arguably a more talented side then Denmark.

I'm an Eriksen owner but that first game was where I hoped for the points, there's probably better options at that price now.

They did yes. And France also made things difficult for themselves. Australia will have to attack Denmark more than they did France though. I think there's a chance of a more open, even game.

    How is my WC team?
    Muslera uzoho
    Carvajal kimmich guerrero danilo varela
    Isco draxler layun A.Ndiaye gazinsky
    Messi kane salah

    Will play 523 likely
    Any suggestion?
Have some doubt about salah vs costa
If I chose costa then I have to change isco and there is not good mid options

You don't need to keep Lukaku after Tunisia. You can sell to Salah then. Who btw has not even played after his injury.

          Did you watch Cavani?

You have a WC team and you're still picking Messi over Ronaldo?! His next two fixtures are plum.

Costa is basically a necessity I think along with Uruguay attack. If I had my pick of a forward line independent of price, I'd go Ronaldo, Costa, Cavani/Suarez

Carvajal might not play even if fit, maybe Akanji from Switzerland now that they have two easier fixtures?

        Suarez is too expensive
        Cavani too deep
        Messi had plenty of chances
And really could score 2-3 goals
        Watch highlights
Yes I agree carvajal is a risk I don't know should I take or not
