Why Naby Keita could be FPL bonus points magnet at Liverpool

Liverpool’s latest summer signing, Naby Keita, has the potential to eclipse his new team-mates when it comes to bonus points on Fantasy Premier League season.

The central midfielder’s style of play is suited to success on the Bonus Points System (BPS), which will combine very well with his goal involvement potential too.

We’ve assessed his chances of earning a place in our FPL squads in 2018/19.

THE HISTORY

Busy midfielder Keita has been described as a complete midfield player capable of big things. He can play a good pass, runs and dribbles very quickly, and helps win possession back too. His exceptional ability has ensured that in just five years he has gone from playing in his home country of Guinea to the Bundesliga, and now the Premier League. In that time his qualities have seen him make his international debut for Guinea and score five goals in 28 caps.

However, Keita is more than just another midfield general to go unrecognised by Fantasy football points-scoring. In 59 league appearances for Red Bull Salzburg he found the net 17 times and assisted another nine goals. In his final season with RB Leipzig Keita registered six goals and five assists, more than any of Liverpool’s central midfielders in 2017/18.

Keita’s most recent campaign saw him deployed in various different positions within the midfield, showing his versatility. He played 17 matches in all competitions as a defensive midfielder, still recording three goals and three assists from that position. 12 matches saw him as a standard central midfielder (two goals, three assists), while another four had him as a more advanced attacker (two goals, one assist).

Keita had more shots on goal than any of his new team-mates, registering 1.6 per match; Giorginio Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were the next best with 1.2.

Only Oxlade-Chamberlain (1.1) came close to Keita’s key passes per match of 1.4. For dribbles, Keita nearly doubled Wijnaldum and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s 1.3 per match with his 2.5.

Defensively, Keita’s performances were strong too, registering 2.4 tackles per match. Only Emre Can bettered that in the Liverpool midfield in 2017/18.

THE PROSPECTS

We can expect to see the best of Keita from a Fantasy perspective in 2018/19. The Guinea international should push for a start at Liverpool with his key statistics last season considerably better than anyone else who operated for the Reds in central midfield.

Fellow new recruit Fabinho looks set to provide protection for the defence in a deeper role in Jurgen Klopp’s favoured 4-3-3 system, allowing Keita to play slightly further forward. Based on his past record and playing style, we can expect him to contribute to goals and assists.

But where Keita really stands out is his potential for bonus points. The aforementioned actions (shots, key passes, dribbles and tackles) all contribute to a player’s BPS score for matches. If Keita continues success in those areas into the Premier League then he will amass plenty of bonus points, especially if he is scoring and assisting goals too.

With Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane still expected to be the main source of goals and assists in the Liverpool team, Keita will probably be more of a mid-price midfielder, increasing his potential value even more.

This is mine at the moment, going for something totally different than the most:

    Subasic, Allison
    Miranda, Meunier, Carvajal, Stones, Trippier
    Coutinho, Isco, Quintero, Inui, Sanchez
    Kane, Neymar, Lukaku

Since I have no WC left I obviously have to think ahead so I'm taking those mids as bench fodder for next round, plus they provide some cover for England/Belgium. Also avoiding teams like Uruguay, Sweden etc. for the same reason.

The only worry is Brazil being knocked out so I'm considering Granqvist over Miranda but then again Sweden could get knocked out too.

    Thoughts?

I don't want this to sound mean, but it doesn't look very different from the RMT's I've seen here all day. So if you're going for differentials, I'm not sure you have them.

Well if I can make one suggestion, if you don't have a wildcard you're putting yourself behind right away by having both Colombia & England players. I'm not sure Quintero helps you much other than filling a spot if you're banking on the England clean sheet seeing as how you have double England defense? Like it's hedging against your own future interest with no real payoff? You might as well get another 4.5 piece of bench fodder and upgrade Miranda to Silva or Marcelo if fit, or something along those lines. Just a thought.

Quintero helps me in case Colombia spring a surprise and knock England out. And he provides some cover for those 2 England clean sheets as well. I'll most likely be getting a 4.4 for him once we get 5 FT to upgrade elsewhere.

            Thanks for your suggestion!

Hello 420.... To answer your question from last night... I'm English but I live in Los Angeles CA.

Interesting team. Couple of points, I've played UCL the last 4-5 years and going early on 2-3 bench fodder has never served me well. 2 England defenders vs a team who thrived on playing against a similar tactical set up maybe a tad risky. Good luck and nice to see something different.

Thanks! Playing UCL myself and it's a bit different as there are always some cheap options even in the later stages. I think it will be much harder to have 14 good starters in the QF than it normally is in UCL.

If you're gonna go all-in on one country, make it Brazil. Triple England as well is pretty darn ambitious. I guess you have the Stones to do it...

I'd still rather ditch Subasic for fodder and use the money to upgrade Inui personally, but nothing wrong with your picks.

      1. 420king
        • 9 Years

        I have 4 Brazil already 😛

Getting a fodder over Subasic only gives me 1.6m to upgrade Inui, nothing good I can get for around 6m. But I'm considering it. Thanks again!

The now seemingly age old question, with what I see going for each of them. Lemme know what you think.

    HAZARD -
+++++Pens, some FKs, a less replaceable player for BEL imo (I see Kaku getting subbed around 60-65 if they're winning eg for Batshu, and kaku was subbed first vs Tunisia), still on form, gets more assists (?) as well as his goals...
--------BUT hasn't been AS explosive, isn't focal point of attack

    LUKAKU -
+++++ Great form, focal point of Belgium attack, "flat-track bully" that can score for fun when it's his day (as it has been in R1 and R2)
-------- Injury cloud (albeit minor), can go anonymous at times, been hooked earlier than Haz, especially if winning

Very close choice. Not very scientific but Hazard has trolled me once too many times so would go Kaku

      Lukaku.

He's a striker. Look at his goal/game ratio then compare it to Hazard. The reason Hazard is a better pick in other fantasy games is because he's classed as a mid.

Add in the fact that Lukaku is a flat-track bully, a huge physical presence against a small Japanese team, and honestly, I don't think it's very close. I think Kaku is clearly the better pick.

Wonder who’ll be the better budget MF over the first 6GW’s out of Ibe or Loftus-Cheek, reckon both will be priced at 5m / 5.5m

Loftus Cheek will be a world cup winner by then, 7m at least.

pretty heavy defence mate. you could get in kdb by downgrading t silva, and i personally wouldnt get guerreiro

would be bloody awful if it is that. start aguero again, and honestly play dybala over perez imo. def is probably right, but not sure about masche... he was pretty bad. but then again is generally a stalwart

Higuain started last game, and he was pretty poor. This lineup doesn't look that bad to me. Messi playing false nine will be interesting

Tempted by pavone if he starts. We will know teams before deadline, right?

I don't know, people here saying we will know the lineups before the deadline, but Fra-Arg starts 4 hours after Uru-Por, doesn't sound right

Agree on Pavon, I'll probably get him, since I don't have a captain for day 1 and it will be fun to watch him

Dont know about Lloris. Fagner is not nailed. Not Mojica imo as you triple England.

One comment about picking players that are punts and might not play. If you are not BB it is not that important to have a full bench but I would avoid players not nailed who are playing in the later games (7pm UK). You won't get team news and will be guessing before subbing them in.

For those who have already spunked their WC and BB you think the best strategy is to focus on the 11 rather than bench, and focus on players who are nailed?

Makes sense to me but I am struggling to think in this heat
