Pre-Season

Atsu on penalties, Richarlison impresses and Heaton gets minutes

Fantasy Premier League managers got their first indication of the penalty-taking pecking order at Newcastle in the latest round of pre-season friendlies.

Meanwhile, Tom Heaton got some more minutes under his belt in Nick Pope’s absence, and Richarlison impressed for Watford.

We’ve got all the latest goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from pre-season.

Burnley 0-1 Shrewsbury Town / Burnley 0-2 Blackpool

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Tom Heaton (£5.0m) registered another hour of football for Burnley with Nick Pope (£5.0m) still yet to return following the World Cup. The former Manchester United man was involved in one of two concurrent friendly matches played behind closed doors at the Clarets’ training ground on Tuesday.

First team players were split evenly across the two pitches but neither XI could find a breakthrough against League One opposition.

Daniel Agyei was the most dangerous for Burnley against Shrewsbury but in the end a Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) own-goal was the difference.

On the other pitch, Sam Vokes (£5.5m) and Nakhi Wells (£4.5m) went closest but Joseph Dodoo and Harry Pritchard got the goals for Blackpool.

The only players other than Pope not to be involved in either match were Robbie Brady (£5.5m), Steven Defour (£5.5m), Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m), although the latter is now back in training after returning from World Cup duty with Iceland.

BURNLEY XI v SHREWSBURY: Heaton (Legzdins 60’); Taylor, Long, Tarkowski, Lowton; Koiki (Chakwana 60’), Westwood, O’Neill, Lennon; Agyei, Wood.

BURNLEY XI v BLACKPOOL: Legzdins (Lindegaard 45’); Ward, Mee, Dunne, Bardsley; Walters, Cork, Hendrick, McNeil; Wells (Massanka 45’), Vokes.

ST. PATRICK’S ATHLETIC 0-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Sean Longstaff, Christian Atsu (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Matt Ritchie (£6.0m), Dwight Gayle (£6.0m)

Christian Atsu (£5.5m) appears to have the advantage in the Newcastle United penalty-taking pecking order after the club’s first pre-season match.

The Magpies were 2-0 winners over St. Patrick’s Athletic, with Atsu scoring the second from the spot after Dwight Gayle (£6.0m) was fouled.

As a precautionary measure, Jamaal Lascelles (£5.0m) did not take part in the match due to muscle tightness. Jacob Murphy (£5.0m), Paul Dummett (£4.5m) and Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) were all absent too.

For the first goal, Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) pounced on a loose ball, drove forward and played in Joselu (£5.0m), whose shot was saved. Matt Ritchie (£6.0m) gathered the rebound and his deflected cross fell to central midfielder Sean Longstaff, who struck the back of the net.

Exciting attacking midfielder Kenedy (£5.0m) had two chances in the second-half, hitting the post and forcing a good save out of Saints goalkeeper Barry Murphy, furthering his appeal for the new FPL season.

The result was settled late on when Gayle was fouled in the penalty area after being put through by Atsu. The latter took the spot-kick and dispatched it confidently.

NEWCASTLE UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): Darlow (Sels 45’); Manquillo (Clark 45’), Lejeune (Roberts 45’), Yarney, Fernandez (Yedlin 45’); Diame (Shelvey 45’), Longstaff; Aarons (Kenedy 45’), Pérez (Armstrong 45’), Ritchie (Atsu 45’); Joselu (Gayle 45’).

FC KÖLN 1-1 WATFORD

  • Goals: Andre Gray (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Richarlison (£6.5m)

Andre Gray (£6.0m) and Richarlison (£6.5m) were the brightest players in Watford’s first match of pre-season, which they drew 1-1.

The pair linked up well going forward and both had good chances to score, with the Brazilian stationed on the left-flank but constantly drifting in to support Gray.

It was the two of them who combined for the Hornets’ only goal of the match in the first-half. Will Hughes (£5.0m) won possession and put Richarlison through, who then slid the ball across to Gray to finish at the far post.

Gray had the chance to make it two when, again, Hughes won the ball in midfield and this time released Daryl Janmaat (£5.0m). His cross was close to the former Burnley man, but it was turned behind for a corner.

Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) came on for Ben Foster (£4.5m) at half-time and could have done better for Köln’s equaliser. Salih Oczan’s low cross from the left was easily turned into the empty Watford net by Jhon Córdoba after a poor decision from the Brazilian.

WATFORD FIRST-HALF XI: (4-1-4-1): Foster; Masina, Kabasele, Cathcart, Janmaat; Capoue; Richarlison, Pereyra, Hughes, Sema; Gray.

WATFORD SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Gomes; Holebas, Britos, Mariappa, Femenia; Hoban, Wilmot; Success, Sinclair, Lukebakio; Deeney.

I like it. But I would not start with players that went far in the WC, pogba in this team.

Then you may as well start Ederson first game and downgrade Foster to a 4.0

Little torn, what option would people go for ?
    A) Vertonghan, Kenedy, Tosun,
    B) Bellerin, Siguardson, Sorloth/Okazaki

If any Leicester fans can shed any light on potential playing time for Okazaki now Mahrez has left. Is it worth finding the extra 0.5 instead of Sorloth.

    Cheers

Sorloth fits perfectly in to my team, just worried about how much game time he actually gets. Think Siguardson and Bellerin have big seasons ahead.

They will all be rested through out the season. Aguero/Jesus will rotate
Mahrez, Sane, Sterling, B.Silva will all rotate. Leaving D.Silva, Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Gundogan for 3 places in midfield. De Bruyne is definitely the least likely to be rotated but feel he might miss the start of the season due to the world cup.

I am using a place holder until KdB is starting .... was on D Silva but shifted to Sanchez at Utd, then Mane at pool, now on both Sane and D Silva 🙂

Whet ever happens KdB is the only clear nailed City mid from GW2 or GW3 imho

Thoughts on this 3-4-3? My big concern is away from Salah you have a limited number of good captain options, but Salah-less gives a lovely balance to the team, and a delicious bench.

There's a lot of competition at RB so I'm paying the premium for now.

Well, Lovren's not going to start the season and we could be after a CB yet. I think Robertson is the go-to option.

If Arsenal line up in a 4-3-3 with Auba playing at left wing, surely Lacazette is the better option at 1.5m less?

    1. UnitedFan
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

I think it's possible that he'll be coming inside so much that it won't matter. I saw the highlights of their game against Boreham and for what it's worth, you would just think he was playing up front if you didn't see the lineups on paper.

    2. Brosstan

Not confirmed just yet, a fee has been agreed but that’s not to say another club can’t come in and do the same. Liverpool still strongly in pole position to sign him and I can’t wait!

Roma are trying to get a bidding war going with Chelsea but not sure anyone will pay more for a keeper.

    Rmt
    Ederson (4.0)
    Azpi Robertson Coleman (Tomkins, Bennett)
    Sanchez Mkhitaryan Mahrez Jota (Stephens)
    Aguero Zaha Tosun

    1.5m itb

First draft that I’m happy with, might bring in Morata for first few weeks depending on what happens between now and GW1

Douglas seems popular. I think TAA is the best 5.0 defender after GW3.

Pep said last season that Sane plays when Mendy was injured, because they needed i wide player on the left. On here some think that means Sane doesnt play when Mendy is fit, but i think the could both play.

What about choosing a team just for the first round, play your bench boost. Take your losses or hopefully gains, hopefully have a perfect start and play your 1st wildcard in Game week 2 ..... and settle down. Any suggestions for such a "perfect" team...

The only issue is that no one is "nailed" in GW1 - also hard to predict results are you dont know who is off the blocks fast.

Later you have form guide + know players who are hogging the points

Is anyone considering placing Cairney in their starting lineup? With the home crowd and newly promoted excitement, I reckon they got a solid chance against Crystal Palace

What would you do with the 0.5 ITB?

Stephens > Neves or save it....or something else

    Foster. Fab.
    Robbo. Coleman. Cedric. Tomkins. Peltier.
    Salah. Mahrez. Mikhi. Cairney. Stephens.
    Kun. Firmino. Tosun.

i'd save, avoids benching headaches and makes you slightly more nimble to jump on early performing players.

Thinking that.....keeping an eye on Shaw at United....hearing good things about him pre season.....Cedric or Tomkins to him possibly.

I think if you're going with a strong back 5, you need to be patient. Did you get rid of Alonso in GW2 last year before he got his brace? Are you someone who generally takes lots of hits? Not being facetious or anything but premium back 5's usually turn into premium attackers real quick.

Hard to ignore Tomkins & Cedric for value when you consider they're nailed and have great fixtures. A couple of premiums alongside those two looks best imo.

If Hazard (and Willian perhaps as well) move, does it make Pedro a good pick? At that price if he is nailed!!! the kind of player Mertens became for Napoli last season, encouraging right?.

Pedro was atrocious last season. Probably the worst player who got regular minutes for a top 6 side alongside Sissoko

it is, the beauty is we will have the charity shield to get an understanding who will start. Sarri doesn't tend to rotate team much and Pedro could be a great early season pick for his price. I am also looking out for Moses who may play right wing as Sarri prefers a back 4. if that happens and as Moses is classed at a defender, that would be a steal
