FPL stars return to training and target Gameweek 1 starts

Several key players have returned to their respective clubs following the World Cup, and are hoping to be involved in Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League.

Last season’s top-scorer Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) was back at Liverpool’s training ground on Friday morning alongside team-mate Sadio Mané (£9.5m).

Both players were knocked out in the group stages in Russia, with Mané involved in three matches, Salah in just two.

The Reds are still waiting for the return of their contingent who reached the knockout stages which includes Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), Dejan Lovren (£5.0m), Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m), Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m).

Christian Eriksen (£9.5m), Son Heung-min (£8.5m) and Davinson Sanchez (£6.0m) are all back with Tottenham and the trio are set to travel to the USA for the club’s pre-season tour.

All three could be involved in Gameweek 1, with the club confirming today that even Son will be available for that match before departing for the Asian Games.

The tournament kicks off on August 14, a few days later and Son has to win it in order to gain immunity from military service. If he achieves that, then he won’t be available until Gameweek 5, with the Games finishing on September 1. An early exit from the competition could see him come back sooner.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane (£12.5m) is hoping to start in Gameweek 1 despite an extended stay in Russia with England.

The Spurs man was at the World Cup until its final weekend, registering 582 minutes at and winning the tournament’s Golden Boot award with six goals.

“I’ll hopefully be back for the first game and hopefully I can try and score in August this year,” Kane told the press when he arrived back in England earlier this week.

Those comments come subsequent to an interview given after England’s third/fourth place play-off defeat to Belgium in which he said he’d be discussing his availability with Mauricio Pochettino.

“We’ll have to talk to the gaffer at Spurs, but it will be a couple of weeks away,” he said.

“Physically your body will always take you where you’d never think it would.

“The important thing is mentally. It will be difficult but something we have to deal with.

“We train all year round, we’re young, we’re fit, your body gets on with it.

“For me personally, and I know for the other lads, it’s just getting away from football really.

“It’s hard, but it’s what we have to do with the season starting so quickly.”

Kane won’t be on Spurs’ pre-season tour, though. In fact, none of the nine players who made it to the last four of the World Cup are on the tour.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is not going to rush any of his key players back, even though he only has four senior first-team players with him on the club’s pre-season tour in the USA.

However, the Manchester Evening News reported on Friday that defender John Stones (£5.5m) is willing to cut-short his extended break so that he can be available to face Chelsea in the Community Shield on August 5.

As we have already mentioned, Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) have already agreed to waive their three-week entitlement, which is why they are currently training in Chicago.

“Physically it’s not a problem but mentally they must be ready, how they come back and handle the situation, day by day,” Guardiola said of his first-team players involved in the World Cup.

“I’d have preferred more time, one month or one month and a half. So many games – but they have to adapt.”

The City manager will support the decision of players who decide not to come back in time for Gameweek 1.
“It is what it is, we know because we spoke – they have to come back ready,” he added.

Elsewhere, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) and Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) have now returned to training for Everton and will travel for the tour of Portugal.

Not many teams looking at Holebas? On Free's and Corners too!

Could be another option to Tomkins or another 4.5 spot??

    B) Mahrez, Hughes & Robertson

a lot of comments I’ve read on here are,

    “Too weak in midfield”
    “Too much in defence”
    “Light in attack”
“Way too much spent up front”

But you can’t have everything, and there really isn’t a right answer on which players will perform this year.

What’s the best way to look at ‘balance’? Looking at my team, and the few versions I’ve had of it over the last few days, each with major strengths in completely different positions, I’ve worked out that it’ll take me no more than 2 transfers to get a premium striker like Aguero instead of a 9.5 (or 1 transfer in a straight swap from Aubameyang), and no more than 2 transfers to get in Sane, Eriksen etc instead of my 6.5 mid. And could get anyone like Sanchez if I got rid of Mahrez.

So basically, I think my team is pretty balanced in the sense that a 4 point hit can fix any emergency that I need.

Are you in that situation? Non-Salah owners, by all means go without Salah, but have a plan in mind of how to get him in at least.

Found it thanks to FPLChess. Interesting set up, looking at the distribution of funds. If it’s another “auto captain Salah season”, it’s probably worth going in this direction. He’s 4 mill more expensive, though, so it’s impossible to copy without cuts elsewhere.

Is that a reply to my post? If so, it wasn’t the point I was trying to make at all!

I was just saying, all teams will distribute their funds differently. Just make sure that you can cover bringing in any player with 2 transfers maximum. A team full of 7.0 midfielders will make it difficult.

        1. Oven Glover
          • 8 Years

It was and I think balance is overrated. It shows that premium defenders are worth the investment, midfielders in the 8-9.5 bracket are good providers of points and that it isn’t necessary to have 2-3 premium (10+) forwards. Too light, too heavy, no balance... Looks like there’s better ways to build a team than trying to achieve “balance”.

Ahh I got you. Thanks for that!

Yeah, a £7-8m a head ‘perfectly balanced’ team is really actually so unbalanced because it offers no flexibility at all.

3 or 4 big hitters (£10m+) are important I think. Then it’s just about finding value in those lower brackets too. E

        Wood (Sorloth, Kamara)

Thoughts on having a Tomkins/Costa/Kenedy rotation as my 11th player?

Each capable of scoring points on their day, and provides a stronger bench than the usual 4.0m defensive punts and 4.5m 2-point mids.

    Thanks.

Decent team, the obvious drawback being no salah. Any money ITB, you may have to think of ways to get Salh and/or kane.
Pereyra to Delofue, more attacking option I feel. Also gives you 0.5 to play around with.

My first draft team: A lot to be considered til the start of the season:

Schmeichel (If Chelsea do get him)

    Tark Robertson Coleman Kiko
    Mahrez Sane Salah Martial
    Auba Tosun

    Button Peltier Kamara Stephens

The bench is too weak i might sacrifice a player (Martial) to strengthen it. Otherwise any feedback on the team?

Of course the bench is weak cause the rest are very decent. It's risk reward.
If the bench can get 1-2 point if needed I would risk it.

Very similar team to mine so I would like it.
Try Kun for Auba early on or it you don't want to risk hits go with it.

Gotta have some Nacho from GW3 I think.

I'm not convinced that Zaha is going to be worth it now he is a forward but there isn't much else in that price range. Maybe Austin and use the 1.0 elsewhere?

    I see a lot of 4-4-2, even a 5-3-2 on here! Personally I'd want 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 but perhaps that's just me.

Jorginho too defensive for my liking. Decent though.

I was thinking nailed on starter for a top team

        Kenedy
        Neves
        Costa
        Cairney
        Other?

DMs such as Fernandinho, Jorginho, Torreira, Matic. Wouldn't advise any of them though.

Daniels could offer good value, or cedric

    Opinions on this Salah-less team?

Foster/Schmeichel (if he goes to Chelsea) otherwise Pickford.

    Azpi/Mendy/TAA/Daniels/Peltier

    Mane/Sane/Mkhi/Bolasie/Cairney

    Aguero/Firmino/Zaha

    Cheers 🙂

    Thoughts on:

    Alisson, Speroni

    Mendy, Coleman, Daniels, Soares, (Bednarek)

    Mahrez, Salah, Gudmunsson,Milivojevic, (Neves)

    Firmino, Kane, (Kamara)

I think Kane may defy the odds and scores, I have done lots of different teams with lots of options, and struggle either way so think Gud and Mili are set piece takers so should be good value I hope

So here is my 25th draft

    Ederson, Speroni
    Daniels, Cedric, Tomkins, Robertson, Alonso/Azpi/Moses
    Salah, Mahrez, Mkhitaryan, Deulofeu, Costa
    Firmino, Aguero, Kamara

    Any good?

A little bit Arsenal heavy, I went for Sánchez and then pulled out as I’m not overly convinced..

I must say it’s really hard work starting off, I must have done 20/30 different teams.. I think you just need to go with your gut feeling
