Sánchez impresses up front again but Lukaku could make early return

Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) put on another excellent performance leading Manchester United’s attack in their first win of pre-season on Tuesday, furthering his case for inclusion in Fantasy Premier League squads.

However, it was revealed that Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) could make an earlier-than-expected return to competitive match action after he cut short his World Cup leave.

Elsewhere there were some chances for Tottenham’s younger players to impress, as those who went the distance in Russia look like they could be back too late for Gameweek 1.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 REAL MADRID

  • Goals: Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m), Ander Herrera (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Matteo Darmian (£5.0m), Sánchez

Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) put on another impressive performance leading Manchester United’s strike force as they recorded their first win of their pre-season tour. The Chilean now has two goals and one assist this summer, more involvements than any of his team-mates, and is in good form to retain his starting berth against Leicester City on August 10. However, it was revealed after the Madrid match that Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.0m) had returned early from their holidays in an attempt to be available for Gameweek 1. It currently looks like Paul Pogba (£8.0m), Jesse Lingard (£7.0m), Ashley Young (£6.0m) and Marouane Fellaini (£5.0m) are the only ones who will definitely be ruled out.

“These are the players that we have, plus Lindelof, that started training two days ago, plus Marcus Rashford, Jones and Lukaku, because they gave to the group and to the team three days of their holidays, so they’re coming back three days early to try and be available for the team.” – Jose Mourinho.

With Sánchez having started the last four up front, accruing 326 minutes in the process, one might expect that he will remain the favourite in that position for Gameweek 1 at least. How long that may last is difficult to predict. So despite the increased Fantasy interest in him over the last few days, that could be quelled by him returning to midfield once Lukaku is back for good.

Mourinho went with three at the back against Madrid with a host of absences in that position, but does not want us to read too much into that. Chris Smalling (£6.0m) is still injured, Marcos Rojo (£5.0m) is preparing for a move away, possibly to Everton, and Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) and Phil Jones (£5.5m) have only just returned from World Cup leave.

“Tactically, means nothing. We tried with the players we had available to organise the best possible team to defend against them. We only had one central defender (Bailly) so I decide because I have only one, instead of playing with two I play with three. Because with three they can support each other a bit more. Timo Fosu-Mensah is a right-back, Scott McTominay is a centre midfielder, we tried to organise the three to make them a bit more comfortable, so I was not working to prepare the team for the future of the Premier League.”

Mourinho may start to change his mind on not standing in the way of Matteo Darmian’s (£5.0m) planned exit from Old Trafford after he was involved in Sanchez’s goal against Madrid. The Italian has the opportunity to make the right-back spot his own with injuries to Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) and Diogo Dalot (£5.5m). With 352 pre-season minutes under his belt, nobody in the right full-back area has had as much summer pitch time as him, so, barring a new signing, he could easily be first-choice for several weeks if he decides to stay in Manchester.

Finally, there was another update on Anthony Martial (£7.5m), who is looking less and less like a Fantasy option worth considering for Gameweek 1. In fact, his time at Manchester United may well be coming to an end after he failed to report back for training after leaving the pre-season tour for the birth of his son. He has also not turned up at the club’s Carrington training complex even after most of his colleagues came back from the States or early from their holidays.

“Anthony Martial? Is better for Karen (Man United press officer) to answer if she wants to answer. We’re here to talk about the game.”

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (3-5-2): De Gea; McTominay (Mitchell 79’), Bailly, Fosu-Mensah; Shaw, Fred (Tuanzebe 68’), Pereira, Herrera, Darmian; Sánchez, Mata (Garner 82’).

AC MILAN 0-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Georges-Kevin Nkoudou
  • Assists: None

It was a youthful Spurs side that beat AC Milan in their final International Champions Cup fixture, but there was still plenty to be learned from a Fantasy perspective. Not least because 21-year-old midfielder Luke Amos (not in FPL) has been tipped by Mauricio Pochettino to break into the first team this season. With Spurs missing so many senior players through injury or World Cup involvement this summer, the youngster has had a chance to stake a claim for a place in the side.

“He’s not so young, 21, but maybe he doesn’t have Premier League experience. But his performances in the three games showed it’s not a problem to put him in to play. Maybe he’s going to play ahead of some senior players. I’m more than brave and if I believe in some players I go with all the consequences.”

After the match Pochettino confirmed that the Spurs players who made it as far as the semi-finals in Russia would return to training next Monday. That gives them five days to try and get ready to face Newcastle in Saturday August 11’s lunch-time kick-off. The Spurs manager confirmed that he will need to see each of them individually before making a decision and he is not prepared to either rule out or confirm any of their potential involvements.

“First we need to assess them on Monday and see what happens. Maybe some players look after themselves and they’ve been training, maybe others rest. We need to see and of course we are not going to take risks if some players are not ready to compete, to play. That is so, so clear. But I don’t want you to start asking me why one is and why one is not. I make clear today the statement that if someone is not ready, he’s not going to be involved, because we are not going to take risks. We cannot [pick them] because we need them, or because [they are] some names, or the people will be disappointed. We are going to look after them in the best way, try to help them and start to play when they will be ready, not before.”

Should Harry Kane (£12.5m) miss out on Gameweek 1, Fernando Llorente (£6.0m) has now started every pre-season match for Spurs and should get the nod to face Newcastle, barring any high-profile transfers. The former Swansea man also has four goals this summer, more than any of his colleagues so far.

The goalkeeper situation is not quite so clear. If Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) is not considered ready from the off then either one of Michel Vorm (£5.0m) or Paulo Gazzaniga (not in FPL) are the alternatives. The former has more starts in public matches (two) but the pair are virtually level for minutes played (133 and 137 respectively).

At centre-back, Davinson Sanchez (£6.0m) made his first club start of the summer against AC Milan and now has 135 minutes under his belt. He should be able to start in Gameweek 1 but who he is paired with is still unclear, with Toby Alderweireld (£6.0m) and Jan Vertonghen (£6.0m) in the group to return on Monday. We learned last week that Ben Davies (£6.0m) could play in central defence which would allow Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) an opportunity with Serge Aurier (£6.0m) on the opposite flank.

In midfield, Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) came on as a second-half substitute against AC Milan in his attempts to be fit in time for the trip to Newcastle. He has started twice in pre-season amassing 177 minutes. Lucas Moura (£7.0m) looks a certainty for several weeks with Son Heung-min (£8.0m) absent from Gameweek 2 until potentially the end of August. The former PSG man has started every match so far and accrued 210 minutes in the public friendlies adding three goals and two assists. No Spurs player has been involved in as many as him.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI (4-2-3-1): Vorm (Gazzaniga 45’); Georgiou (Davies 77’), Sanchez (Carter-Vickers 92’), Eyoma, Walker-Peters; Amos, Skipp; Moura (Eriksen 63’), Nkoudou, Marsh (Aurier 77’); Llorente (63’).

I like him. I just think Aubameyang is better and will score more goals. Also, I could trust Auba with the armband and probably not Lacazette. Still though, I think Laca will score many goals this season as well.

I'm thinking Ozil as I'm unsure about both Laca and Auba and Ozil is a cheaper (and I think more certain) way into their attack?

He's in a pool of premium players who could all do well this season. Can only have around 3 of these guys though.

Long-term, I feel like Salah, Hazard, Auba will be the big 3 when the real Premier League starts, especially if all on pens. Who knows though. Players like Laca and Mane could represent better value.

Thinking about going without a City attacker and then jumping on whichever bandwagon looks best. What are thinking with Aguero, is he a guaranteed starter any more?

Someone posted stats from when both Jesus and Aguero were both fit and they seemed to alternate games loosely. Seems nuts to think he couldn't be nailed, but he may not be. Will probably start the season with him myself, and then switch to Auba when it goes tits up.

It's a long held opinion of mine and it helps to read between the lines of the standard press release that he's a great manager.
His inability to manage the top players at clubs to me is the key, I can't remember every case but the likes of Ronaldo and I believe Gerrard have low opinions of the man and his management,

Lately, I am seeing so many RMTs with poor bench players. And that too in a season with so much uncertainty with players returning from World Cup. FFS used to be the place where people actually knew what they are doing.

I am giving up commenting on RMTs with benches like . Your team, your decision.

Not any 4.5m defender. Players like Dunk / Duffy are good examples of bench players. Because the bench is meant for minimum 2 points (or more) if one of the big names gets benched. At least one bench player should be someone like Cairney / Ralls so that you not only have 2 points but also a decent chance of a goal / assist.

If Wan-Bissaka does not play in the same gameweek as Aguero then whats the point of spending 4.0m on him?
He has not nailed his place in the team yet. I am not saying he is a bad player. I will be glad to transfer him in if he starts consecutively, albeit at 4.2m (because his price will increase)... but before that, I would be skeptical.

It is ok to have Wan-Bissaka, but as the 3rd bench (who will probably never come on). The first bench should be someone scoring decently, and the 2nd bench should be "nailed" 2 pointer.

I understand where you are coming from but AWB won club young player of the year last year and started every pre-season game, that's got to give you pretty decent confidence (nothing is every for certain). For Peltier I agree Cardiff are not good enough to justify the slightly higher rotation risk of a 4.0

For AWB though, Brighton's opening fixtures are so bad they could easily concede 2 goals per game and give you 1s from Duffy and Dunk. Palace's fixtures on the other hand look really good.

I can't justify paying 0.5 more for them. Tomkins is probably the only 4.5 I can justify ahead of AWB (given Cedric is a GW1 risk).

I agree for midfield bench you should at least spend 5.0. For the extra 0.5 you get very good value

Again for striker I think it's a waste to spend anything other than 4.5. There's no one half decent under Mitro at 6.5 (maybe King at 6.0) but I'd rather pick a starting XI with less rotation risk and right off my third striker.

I agree with you though if you have a starting XI with rotation risks like Aguero or Lacazette then it makes sense to go extra heavy on the bench.

Here, we begin to converge. As we both note, 3rd bench will probably never come on, and lets give that to a non-playing 4.5m striker. For the first bench, I will definitely want to have 5.0m -- either in midfielder or defence -- so that I can draft in players like Mendy or Aguero. City players are definitely going to be rotated. With World Cup this year, I would actually be careful of my second bench as well. Choose rotating players, for example Doherty and Cairney -- although they are from promoted sides.

We agree on the 5.0 midfielder. Doherty is not a bad shout at 4.5 but personally I would rather taking a slightly higher risk on AWB and keep a bit more money in the bank given as you say Wolves is a somewhat unknown quantity and I have reasonable confidence he will be play regularly. I currently have 2.0 in the bak that may change so that I have flexibility in the first few gameweeks. I will at least be keeping 0.5 minimum to get KDB in for Sane'.

As you say we don't actually differ too much in thought but for me AWB, 5.0, 4.5 striker is good enough. You like to spend the extra 0.5 to upgrade AWB. If Palace fixtures were not so good I'd similarly be looking at a 4.5

Because even if he looks first choice in pre-season, hes still a rotation risk and hes also the kind of player who is one poor performance away from being benched and then losing his spot if the replacement does well.

You could make a case for almost every 4.5 defender losing his place if they have a bad performance (other than maybe Huddersfield and Brighton). These days most teams have two players per position. Starting all games in preseason is as much confirmation as you can get for defenders in the lower price ranges

Personally think you are taking quite a lot of crap.

I agree that you need 1 or 2 playing from your bench but I don’t think you should be expecting more than 2 points per sub.

As a result, having an extra £0.5m to upgrade a first team player is very well worth it (if you expect a PPG average improvement greater than the average extra you expect from the bench when they come on)!!!!

Have an upvote. I'm seeing teams with AWB, Peltier, Kamara and Chalobah. It boggles the mind. Outside of possibly having a 4.0 keeper, I need the rest of my players to have a chance at contributing this early in the season. Not only do we not know about rotations and formations, but a price structure like that completely limits your ability to be nimble and hop on bandwagons.

Rubbish bench obviously...but the starting 11 looks pretty sweet...

    Fabs
    Robertson, Mendy, Tomkins
    Salah, Mahrez, Ozil, Keita, Richarlison
    Aguero, Arnie

    4.0, A W-B, Peltier, Kamara

        Well that's true.

But I'm not sure I buy the previous posts to be honest...A W-B looks as likely as any 4.5 defender to get a game, Peltier looks ok for a point (I don't really expect my second bench option to get much more than that) and I hope I won't need Kamara.

Hindsight is a great thing, but I'm happy with 0 points on my bench and a starting 11...

Gk are risky, especially with only fabianski as gk as 4 mill ones don’t start. Fabianski isn’t the best to have as your strongest but it does save money. Also think mahrez is too risky with rotation risk when city’s World Cup players come back e.g. sterling. Personally don’t think ozil is a strong choice as he may not have the best of seasons, could get a cheaper option and spend money elsewhere. Also think kieta is a risk as he’s not much of an attacking midfielder, great player will do well but may not get lots of points.
Bench is weak, but as is everyone’s.( even mine) this is only my opinion, only my personal thoughts.

I don't think it's correct to say that Keita will be playing as a defensive midfielder, that's the role that Fabinho will be taking up for Liverpool. Keita will be playing in one of the two more advanced positions in the midfield three and he's got a good track record for both goals and assists at all of his previous clubs. I think he'll be setting a lot of attacking moves up for the forwards and he may well chip in with a good few goals as well.

Amazing really. Once again we have more pists about which rotating 4.5 defenders to get than which rotating captains to get. I have no idea why it's ignored so much as the main consideration in our teams. Getting the rotating captains right should be right at the top of the list of considerations.

    1. Goalosaurus

        5 years, 9 months ago

Always a few that pair up well. Some seasons it's a real "doh" moment after the first ten games or so.

Whether we choose to pick them isn't really my point....my real point is that it should be our biggest consideration...and certainly way ahead of which 4.5 defenders rotate.

        1. Goalosaurus
          • 6 Years

Its fun to look for a "bargain" though. Similar to wasting a transfer on one 4.5 def to another as if it'll make a big difference.

Maybe a captain rotation article for those going without Salah would be good to see what the options are.

Little history. There was once a season, where I captained Suarez, and everything went well. Inspired by that, next season I captained Hazard from the beginning -- and everything was flying. Then, I couldn't keep enough faith on Mahrez and was absolutely punished. I didn't play the next year (I submitted a PhD thesis). Last year, I wanted to be smart by rotating captains.

This year, I have no confusion any more. Experience matters. 😛

Going to start a 12-team draft on Friday. If you were compiling a list for the first 12 players to be drafted, which order would you rank them?

Assuming most will go Kane and Salah as top 2, but below that it's tricky.

      Hazard
      Aubameyang
      KDB

      To get things started.

Even though Hazard may go before end of August?

That's my problem with ranking him 3rd. Not sure about using 1st pick on someone who might not see out the month?

Auba, Mane, Eriksen, Sterling, KDB, Aguero, Firmino, Hazard, Vardy, Alli, Ozil

Probably in that order. Although due to rotation worries could punt sterling and kun to the back.

      That's the £500,000 question.
Ederson has been in and out of my team so many times, most solid way into the city def. But then I see that Fab nearly scored the same as him last year...

I was literally about to get some feedback on this. Started with Ederson + 4.0, then changed to Fab/Foster for rotation. 0.5 sitting ITB so I could go for Ederson, but may need it after a week or two for transfers.

      Tough one!

Why rotate Fab with anyone? Just fire and forget as you would with Ederson!? They got 1 points difference last year, and going Fab with 4.0 frees up lots of cash....

still tough one...save point with bonus are highly predicted with cheaper ones but not certain in which match they got the haul..they may haul from bench..ederson best route into city defence but minimum chance of save points and bonus points..great dilemma continues...
