Captains

Vote in the Captain Poll for Gameweek 2

With one round of the latest Fantasy Premier League season already in the history books, it’s time to start preparing for Gameweek 2.

Where better to start than with the all-important captain debate, which looks like it will be less clear-cut than it was in Gameweek 1.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) will obviously remain the favourite with his 54 percent ownership but his next fixture is arguably tougher than a home tie with a new-look West Ham side. In the final nine Gameweeks of 2018/19 the only outfit to keep more clean sheets than Crystal Palace was Liverpool themselves. Since James Tomkins (£4.5m) and Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) were paired together again the Eagles have been a difficult prospect to break down.

For those not in possession of Salah, there are other alternatives amongst his team-mates including Sunday’s brace-scoring midfielder Sadio Mané (£9.5m), left-back Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) who assisted and kept a clean sheet, and striker Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Manchester City’s options certainly win out when it comes to fixture difficulty as they host Huddersfield Town on Sunday afternoon. However, the fact that every player has now returned to the group since the World Cup the dreaded issue of rotation could cause some problems.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is the most backed ownership-wise, in 32 percent of squads, but could be benched to allow Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) a first start of the season. Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) looks to be back in the conversation sooner than expected too, his seven-point haul in Gameweek 1 putting him on the captain radar, especially as his 2.5 percent ownership makes a potentially powerful differential option.

Just as Robertson may be considered for the captaincy, his Man City counter-part Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) has forced his way into the conversation with 15 points scored against Arsenal from assisting both of his team’s goals.

Tottenham’s options have dragged themselves into the conversation after seeing off Newcastle on Saturday and preparing for a home match against newly-promoted Fulham. Harry Kane (£12.5m) may not have set the world on fire but with 31.1 percent ownership he should be considered by those in possession of him.

Elsewhere on the Spurs roster Gameweek 1 goalscorer Dele Alli (£9.0m) may be turned to as another differential option while Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) offers the more creative angle for the fixture.

Anyone brave enough to place their captain on a player from Chelsea v Arsenal have a few outside outside options. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) will be the obvious choice from the Gunners while Marcos Alonso‘s (£6.5m) performance against Huddersfield may have convinced some of his doubters. Don’t forget that Eden Hazard (£10.5m), backed by 11 percent, may alsio play a part in the fixture.

Make sure you watch our Captain video below and then vote in the poll underneath it. Why not tell us why you made your choice in the comments? We’ll be rounding off the debate later this week with another Captain Sensible article.

Load of nothing. It doesn't show him using his phone whilst driving, it shows him using his phone in a stationary car surrounded by people. No chance there will be any action and even if there was it's a small fine

I don’t need think anyone’s arguing it’s a particularly serious incident (although no one condoning molbile phone use while driving, whether he did that or not!)

It’s more could this create bad blood between him & Liverpool, and could that affect him on the pitch is the question. Hopefully not.

If ever there was a game Pep could afford to rotate for this is it.

Sanè, Jesus and Delp/Danilo may be given time this week in place of Sterling/Mahrez, Kun and Mendy.

    Guardiola discussing this season.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PwpdV82F3A
It's a great watch, but of real interest is what he says at 1.57 when asked if he'll do anything different this season. He responds that they struggled to break teams down who played 5-4-1 with many men behind the ball (aka Huddersfield) and they have been working on different approaches. This is just speculation but I think we could see an even more attacking line up sacrificing one of the more defensive midfielders potentially with both Jesus and Aguero up top.

Bad situation to be in. You're putting yourself 1 transfer behind everyone else at a time when it is crucial to be flexible and to react. I wouldn't waste a transfer on non playing bench players. "Points not pounds" as Joe always says.

Once he drops .1 then you are stuck with him and playing with a 14 man squad worth 95.0 mill from GW2 - not very clever at all.

Using a transfer now when the rest of the team does not need any changes is a good idea imho and you will hardly miss the transfer

very tough one, given that kdb will surely come back in before sane. sure if he starts vs huddersfield you'll be gutted you sold but you simply can't be having doubts over starting for 9.5mil, regardless of how dangerous the player is when they do start.

given how bizarre the whole germany situation was and now him benched to start the season i'm wondering if it's about more than football, could be attitude issues.
but yeah it's one thing having doubts over say pedro for 6.5mil, another when they're 9.5.

Non-owner, have had too much grief with Kun in fixtures exactly like this in the past where you get all worked up, ready to enjoy a load of goals then either Pep benches him, he doesn’t perform, or gets subbed off early with one goal & a YC & no baps etc.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him benched.

But many seem to think he’s guaranteed to start, so also wouldn’t be surprised to see him score 4 goals.

My captaincy keeps flipping between Salah (tough fixture), KDB (consistent rather than explosove) and Aguero (question on minutes).

I’m thinking Salah to be honest... but all 3 good choices. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Aguero benched but many seem to think he’s guaranteed to start.

With KDB, I wonder is it better to just take the points if he hauls

Your thoughts echo mine. KDB is a put in and forget player for me. Collect the points along the way. I didn't own Aguero for most of pre-season talking people that he was too risky for his price (and then the worry of him scoring a hat trick and me not owning him kicked in. I didn't want to be left behind). So that leaves Salah.

Although if you have Kun in your team, it may be unwise not to captain. Tough call!

I have seen people celebrating 0.1 price rises whilst not owning 2 or 3 of them when they got their points. Crazy.

For those with Mané and Salah is Mané not perhaps a good differential captain? Fairly low risk as if Salah does well you get his single points and Mané likely an assister. But if Mané does well differential captain and Salah assist points likely. If they both do badly nothing lost.

Sounds like you are arguing that it doesn't matter much whether you go for Mane and Salah. If so, doesn't that defeat the purpose of your differential captain?

I don't know that you can say Mane is the likely assister, it could be one of about 8 Liverpool players.

If I don't think Salah is the best captain then no-one else will be in the liverpool team. Who knows though, that might change if Mane has a blinder of a season

Ah, hope it’s a bug that will be fixed. I enjoy the nerdyness of trying to figure out rivals transfers

I’ve countered quite a few of their transfers over the years to much annoyance 🙂

Who's scoring more points this season? KDB, Hazard or Sterling? Looking at going 3 premium midfielders this season. Mane looking an absolute threat as Pool playing more compact. Klopp looking to have his 3 forwards in and around the box at all times, going to be a delight for FPL owners!

I think Mané, Haz, KDB alongside Salah is very doable. Then Eriksen for Mané when he inevitably gets injured or suspended

Kun in my team but he won't be getting the armband. No point in compromising a reasonably good start to the season with a potential no-show or cameo from him.

Then there's no point having a 11 million player in your team. You have simply contradicted yourself. If you are not going to captain him at home to HUD then when are you going to skipper him?

Absolutely this. You cant have an 11 million player you won't Captain and get any value at all in terms of PPM. Sell and strengthen your team

      5. AndyCook

Just because he isn’t the best opion this week doesn’t always make that the case. Salah will have 8 or so tough fixtures a season so maybe these 8 are the targets

      6. Son is Rising

I had similar thoughts, but I think I would be more annoyed about missing out on going from 6k to top 1000 if Aguero performs and Salah doesn't, than I would be about sliding from 6k to 30 or 40k Salah performs and Aguero doesn't.

Last time I had this dilemma, Kun bagged hattie so...and by that logic if you dont captain Kun, you might as well cap Salah all of 38 games
