Site regular and moderator RedLightning has here given us his team, and some explanations of his choices. Feel free to comment on his team.

RedLightning’s Squad

Fabianski – Patricio

Robertson – Mendy – Alonso – Walker – Wan Bissaka

Salah – Mane – Richarlison – Jorginho – Stephens

Aguero – Arnautovic – Jimenez

My GW1 squad was a bit different. If I had asked it to be RMT’ed in advance of GW1 I would probably have been deluged with replies of “too much spent on defence” but I don’t agree – elite defenders offer excellent value.

I’m very happy with this squad as it stands and it should be good for a few gameweeks, so I’m not yet planning any specific changes to it, unless events such as injuries make changes desirable; after that, fixtures will need to be considered.

I will be hoping to keep my wildcard till at least the second international break, by which time we should have better information about who is fit, playing and in form and who isn’t.

I avoided players from teams that had reached the Quarter-finals or Semi-finals of the World Cup, apart from Mendy, and many of them are not yet back to full match fitness, but some of them (such as Sterling, Alexander-Arnold and Pogba) could soon come into consideration.

This squad will normally play in 4-3-3 formation, but it has the flexibility to sometimes vary from that (such as in GW1, when it seemed a bit risky to play both Man City defenders away at Arsenal).

Goalkeepers

Rotating 4.5m goalies. Fabri also rotates well with Fabianski, but I have more faith in Patricio and Wolves. I did consider de Gea as a stand-alone, but needed to make various savings in order to afford Mane. I also considered having a 4.5m stand-alone, but had 0.5m spare and this seemed like the best place to spend it.

Defenders

4 elite defenders (not just premium, but the best that money can buy) plus Wan-Bissaka as a magic bean. I will probably bring in a United defender for one of the other elites at some point. Bailly was actually in my draft squad as a 5th elite defender until his injury doubt, but I wouldn’t want to leave WB out now. It was a difficult choice between Alonso and Azpilicueta, but I expect them both to outscore the cheaper Chelsea alternatives. Alexander-Arnold may be a good alternative to Robertson.

Midfielders

Salah should be my regular captain, Mane and Richarlison should be regular starters, and Jorginho may occasionly come in as a 4th mid. There are no midfield magic beans to compare with Tom Carroll and Loftus-Cheek last season, so the bench-sitting 5th midfielder was a difficult choice. I was on McDonald for a long time, but then changed to Stephens at the last minute, not even giving me time to change my bench order. I would like to bring in Sterling at some point, but that will involve getting rid of one of my other City players. Neves, Jota and Fraser are also on the watchlist.

Forwards

Aguero could be an occasional alternative captain. It was a toss-up between Aguero and Aubameyang, but the deciding factor was that I may want to captain Aguero in GW5. Zaha could be a good alternative to Arnautovic. Jimenez was the best forward available at his price.

Conclusion

Thoughts? Suggestions? Should I save? Who should I look to bring in? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

    Hey guys,

I am new to FPL and it is my first season to play. I am lucky enough to have 86 points at GW1, but I face some difficulties to make transfer this week. Any thoughts on my team?

    DDG
    Van Dijk Walker Tarkowski
    Jota Mane(C) Neves Sanchez
    Firmino Rashford Aguero.

Double Wolves and Rashford + Sanchez is a problem i need to solve now, any thoughts of it?

    A. Sub Sanchez for KDB
    B. Sub Rashford for King / Zaha
    C. Sub Jota for Maddison
    D. Keep / other suggestions.

    Cheers!

Hold Sanchez for now. I would prefer Maddison over Jota or Neves this week. Hard pick though as I think Jota has more potential long run than Neves.

      Who is on your bench?

I would hold on and make 2 changes in GW3... Salah/KDB/Auba/Sterling/Zaha.. all of them are options then.

    4-4-2

    Gk - Ryan
Def - VVD, Mendy, D.Luiz, Smalling
    Mid - Salah (c), Eriksen, Richarlison, B.Silva
    Fwd - Agero, Arnautovic
Subs - Button, Will Hughes, Wan-Bissaka, Kamara

Really happy with the set up of my team and the 4 premium defenders is already paying dividends with 3 clean sheets + Mendy’s 2 assists.

The only issue I have to resolve is Smalling. Really want a Utd defender to cover DDG and Shaw’s combined 40% ownership. Originally went with Smalling for his goal threat - didn’t expect him to fall behind Lindelof!

Who is the best Utd replacement? Is Shaw a no brainer or iss that chasing points? How long until he upsets Moaninho again and is out of the team??? Is Bailly the more sensible choice? Is Young worth the gamble for set piece assist potential - surely he’ll oust Darmian at right back?

    1. BadgersBoys
      • 10 Years

I'm honestly not that bothered by Utd coverage at the back. I don't think they will keep as many CS's this season so I wouldn't fixate on bringing in coverage. Shaw probably won't score again all season and DDG surely won't have the season he had last year. Too many people weakening overall squad to cover Utd in defence.

I gambled on Shaw and it paid off, he seems like a starter and a cheap entry into Man Utd defence which will become more solid, Mourinho will be working them all week to iron out the mistakes they made against Leicester. Clean sheets and possible attacking returns, crosses to Lukaku etc, I think Shaw's a very attractive option.

Please RMT this is my first season playing, I might regret my keeper choice but feel it would be a waste of transfers changing keeper before my first wildcard. My Odoi bench pick seems a mistake but again im sure I'll have morepressing concerns than swapping my bench mid. Also feel Sanchez may be worth swapping for someone (KDB / Sterling or Mane?) Thoughs?

    Button / Ryan

    Robertson Mendy Kabalese Doherty Wan-B

    Salah Sanchez Richarlison Jota Hudson-Odoi

    Aguerro King Zaha

With a great 99pt GW1 in the bag. Here's my team for GW2:

    Foster (Stekelenburg)
    Shaw Mendy TAA (AWB, Peltier)
    Salah Sanchez Richarlison Bilva Neves
    Firmino Aguero (Kamara)

    Any thoughts?

Rolling my FT for GW3 and based on how this week goes will bring in KDB/Haz or Sterling.

Could do an upgrade to Kane as well if he looks like waking up.

Defo save and have a plan for Kane (that's what I'm doing pretty much, although I'm trying to find a contingency plan for getting Mane somehow, maybe)

Yea pretty much what I am doing. Not having Mane does scare me but I think he got lucky with the offside goal. Also for the first one, could have easily been Firmino who tapped it in. Time will tell.

I had Jorginho in my first draft and almost all other ones up until the final one.

If Jorginho and Kante both play in a 433 at 5m I think they could be superb value as they could both get forward for a top 6 club.

Kante’s goal might have been a shinner but he was in the right position.

If I have to downgrade a 6.5 mid to bring in Kane in September, I’ll be looking at these two.

    1. BRONALDINHO
      • 9 Years

If Kante continues to blast forward we may have something there. Jorginho - not so much.

Don't think Jorginho will get many attacking returns though. I'm guessing Hazard will get penalties when he's back.

Agree with Kante though, but going to watch a couple of weeks first.

Jorginho won't be on pens when Hazard is on the pitch, but Kante's more advance role is tempting. I'll see what happens against Arsenal.

    Patricio

    Salah Bilva Moura Richarlison
    Aguero Zaha Laca

    Fabianski - Kennedy - Daniels - Wan B

Not sure whether to roll my FT or get Firminho in for Laca? Any pointers appreciated.

        5 years, 8 months ago

        Save FT.

You didn't buy Laca for 1 GW. Ars looked much more dangerous after he joined - and he will probably play more from GW 3 onwards, when the fixtures improve.
I would save, as Shaw, Bilva, Aguero, Daniels could all become rotation risk soon.
Looks good for this week. I would consider Fab over Pat.

Yeah Salah and Mane will stay. May change Mane later if he drops off after a few games.

I can do Moura and Jota to KDB and Neves but with KDB injured I may do Jota to Mahrez instead. Just waiting to see how City rotation is looking.

Moura would be the first I was looking to shift from that lot. Not sure if Bertrand will provide great value going forwards (that Cedric couldn't otherwise provide). Interesting to see if Ings can strike up any kind of partnership with either of the full backs.

Yeah. Moura was only a temporary option for the 1st 2 GW. Was thinking of upgrading to maybe a City player or Erikssen.

I am interested in Ings. Just worried about game time against Austin or Gabbi. If he plays regular then may drop king/Arnie to free up funds. Think a few weeks will tell

Aguero v Salah captaincy conundrum unresolved as yet.

Team is decent, no knee jerk needed.

Decision is out of my hands. No way I'm taking a -4 with a strong squad (at least on paper). Mendy would have been a reasonable switch long term (had it pencilled in for GW3 or 4 once Rose returns anyway) but too late now with price change.

            Dailey price changes are frustrating.

yeah - I knew it was coming, so could have made the switch...maybe Pep'll drop Mendy this week in favour of Sane's width 😮

Looks very good. Costa is a nice option to have as first sub.

No transfer needed, I'd advise Kun for captain but keep an eye out for any new news that emerges between now and the deadline.

Hope you bounce back well after that start 😉

Sorry to hop in the discussion. But as you guys are some sort of old timers of the game, do you guys know where i can find figures on the total number of FPL players each season (at season start) since the creation of the game?

              Thx!

      Hello

      Patricio (Fabianski)
Mendy - David Luiz - TAA (Tomkins - WB)
Salah - Sanchez - Richarlison - Jota (Kenedy)
      Aguero (c) - King - Arnautovic

Only transfer i was considering was Sanchez -> KDB but thinking of giving it another week based on Utd fixture.

      Thoughts welcomed.

      Thanks

If you can afford to save, it's a very useful strategy - even if you only make 1 FT next week, banking a 2nd transfer until the moment arises is a decent plan

        Looks all good.

If I were you, I'd love to be playing Kenedy this week, because it's as good a game as he'll get. Problem is all the other options in midfield and forwards are good options as well...

Both goalkeepers might struggle this week. Possibly go Fab for save potential?

        Save transfer I'd say

Jota > Maddison as my FT ? (have Richarlison)

      Reasons behind the transfer.

      1) maddison has better fixtures than jota
      2) maddison plays in a better team
      3) maddison on more set pieces than jota
      4) maddison in a team that will score more goals than wolves

Good enough reasons or should I stick with Jota ?

      Thanks guys.

Managed one off target 30 yard shot didn’t look like the best 6.5 FPL asset to own. Although agree on waiting not going to knee jerk liked his stats when I picked him originally

It doesn't seem like an unreasonable switch, however it certainly is a luxury move! I'd be tempted to hold and see. Wolves may be less nervous for their 2nd Premier League outing.

I'd bench Ings, more likely he's benched IRL and Jota will be keen to get off the mark in PL

Having taken Aguero at BSilva’s expense (Fernandinho downgrade, Wood upgrade), I surely have to stick to the plan and captain now...?

Tempted to move on Cairney as he’s a certain 2 pointer, but 2 FTs will enable me to bring in KdB as planned if it seems Aguero is indeed too risky...

      Ryan
      Mendy Robertson PvA
      Salah Eriksen Fernandinho Cairney
      Auba Aguero(c) King

      Button Stephens WB Peletier

Kevin De Bruyne (27) has suffered a knee injury in training. Full extent not known as yet, but fears that he might be out for a while (as in +2 months). #mcfc

      Pogba Bilva Richarlison Mane Neves

Got Neves in for Hudson-Odoi before the price rise, so 100.6 TV, 0 ITB.
