FPL Question Time – Salah vs Mané, international break and Wildcard tips

More names from our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer your questions, this time as we go into the first international break of the campaign.

The big question which we’ve had plenty of submissions on is whether Mohamed Salah (£13.om) should come out of our squads.

We’ve got some opinion on that conundrum while the subjects of transfers during the international break and Wildcard tips are also discussed.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 4 Question Time:

James Egersdorff – You can’t get much more experienced than this man when it comes to FPL. After yet another season inside the top 5,000 managers in 2017/18, James is a Fantasy Football Scout ‘Hall of Fame’ legend.

Tom from Who Got the Assist? – One half of one of the fastest growing FPL podcasts of recent times.

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

QUESTION ONE – JAMES EGERSDORFF

Do we have enough information to be reasonably sure that Mane provides a better points return over Salah and if so, should we be looking to move Salah on?

James: “The lack of a double-digit return from the ‘Egyptian King’, combined with the smoking hot start to the season from Mané has led many FPL managers (myself included!) to investigate the possibility of doing the unthinkable and removing Salah from our squads.

“As a pre-Gameweek 4 Wildcarder, it’s fair to say the idea of cashing in on Salah did look attractive. I spent the week tinkering with my squad given with treasure trove of riches his £13m opened up. It looked like a combination of Mané and Hazard versus Salah and a (roughly) £7m midfielder here.

“It’s definitely a tough choice. We’ve only had four Gameweeks played and therefore only a small sample of data to base such a potentially season-defining decision on. So I kept the Egyptian in my squad.

“We must ask ourselves ‘do we feel that Mané and Salah will maintain their current performance levels?’ Mané is flying right now, with a score of 9.8 per game to Salah’s 6.8. To put that into context, if they were to continue that over 38 Gameweeks, Mané would smash the all-time FPL high score record (303 set by Salah last season) with a whopping 372. Do we really think he’s capable of doing that?

“On the other hand, Salah would weigh in with just over 258, which in fairness isn’t a million miles away from his optimum points per game levels seen in 2017/18.

“Working the figures again, this tells us Salah is underperforming against last year’s figures by around 15 percent, whereas Mane is massively overperforming, even when we factor in his 10-game absence last season.

“The question FPL managers need to ask themselves therefore is whether they feel Salah will make up the performance level deficit and return to the mean and whether Mane can continue to outperform his mean score by such a high margin.”

QUESTION TWO – HOLLY SHAND

How much team value can you potentially earn playing your Wildcard during the international break and is it worth using if your squad doesn’t need a major fix?

Holly: “The international break tends to be a steadier time for price rises and falls than many expect. So I’d expect perhaps just one or two players rising twice, to give the all important £0.1 million gained value.

“However, if you cannot afford the price swings to ditch underperforming assets for the in-form players, the Wildcard can still be valuable.

“Beware the fixture swings and chasing early season points though.

“Liverpool in particular have a tricky upcoming spell.”

QUESTION THREE – TOM

If you are not planning to use the Wildcard for Gameweek 5, how many point hits should we consider taking to make up an injury and suspension filled squad? Also, should we be making early transfer considering how fast players prices are rising?

Tom: “How many hits should we consider? Well, obviously this depends very much on your team and what the situation is.

“If you are dead set on keeping your Wildcard, I’d focus on getting a good XI out for Gameweek 5, after International Break, rather than fixing bench fodder – unless you are doing a combination move as part of your hit (i.e. moving a £4.5 defender down to a £4.0 to free up cash).

“That being said, I’d be thinking that if you need multiple hits to deal with your team’s injuries and suspensions then there’s no need to be stubborn about pulling your wildcard; your squad needs it.

“Should we make early transfers considering how fast players’ prices rise? It depends in what context.

“If there’s little to no midweek action, as we’ve seen at the start of this season, then an early transfer is a risk that can be worth taking.

“However as we saw with Wilfried Zaha and Kevin de Bruyne picking up training ground knocks you are never immune from a shock injury.

“But as we start to enter the period where continental football and other cup competitions return, I’d advise being more cautious with your early transfers as you may end up needing a hit to fix an impetuous move.

“Essentially: you’ll remember your overall rank at the end of the season, not your team value.”

Paying for adult dvds, sounds like you grew up in the 90s.

Aubameyang and Mikhitarian are the current blights on my team. Shall I give them more chance given the fixtures or is it time to dump?

If you have a FT to get out Mkhitaryan, I would. Keep Auba. If you don't have a FT or aren't considering a wildcard, just keep Mkhi for one more week.

That's what I thought but it's a case of who do I bring in for Mkhi? I'm 0.1 away from Moura

Idk about you, but I haven't seen anything from Mkhitarian to suggest he should be dropped.

In the end, I'm keeping him for one / maybe two more GW's. Want to see if he's lost his place for good.

I think he was just rotated I think I will get schurrle in for him as he looks more certain to start great value decent fixtures plenty of threat.
Those who keep Mkhitrayan just have to suffer the cameos and rotation in between intermittent points hauls.

    WC Active.

    Patricio 4.5
    Alonso Mendy Robbo WanB Bennet
    Salah Hazard D. Silva Maddison
    Aguero Wilson Quaner

No Arsenal but I think their midfield is something to avoid with all the rotation. Strikers would be nice but would prefer Aguero, Salah, Haz instead

Gotta be Mitro for budget striker imo.

Team looks good otherwise. Consider Shaw for Robbo for fixtures and Hamer is cheaper and better for good WOL rotation.

His stats are better? Show me. Mitro has had a ton of shots and is on all direct set pieces. King takes the PKs for BOU.

Only argument are that his fixtures are better. Still think Mitro is pretty essential.

How confident are you of Moura keeping his spot? I'm not really convinced, otherwise looks good apart from that goalkeeper situation.

If i were to pick 4.5 goalkeepers I would make sure to have two that rotate well together. Patricio alone is not going to bring you a lot of points...

I think it's mad to go without Salah, let alone go without Salah and Mane, but it's all the rage on here these days so good luck to all of you who have the balls to go through with that!

    Robertson, Mendy, AWB (Tomkins*, Bednarek)
    Salah, Dilva, Pedro, Walcott*, Fraser
    Aguero, Auba (Kamara)

    1FT, 0.1 ITB

    Tomkins > Alonso, Auba > Ings? (-4)

It is beyond me how emery doesnt see that 352 is perfectly suited for this group of players. It will solve the dilemma of auba and laca together,it will solve the defence problems caused by bellerin and monreal awful defending and give them attacking freedom and will let him play mkhi, ozil and ramsey in midfield which is their position in the first place.

I don't have any pressing concerns in my team, and TV is 101.9 (100.8 if I sold everyone) so I'm happy with the extra dough.

Now...how to manage the team generally from this point forward? Patience with no hits and no knee jerk moves? Owning and captaining the leader of the captain poll? Anything else?

Definitely don't do that as a set in stone action.

You would have benched Patricio @whm if you used rotation so concentrate more on the quality of keepers rather than fixtures.

    Current team.

    Hennessy
    Mendy Alonso Robbo
    Salah Mane Mikhi Walcott
    Aguero Zaha Wilson

    Hamer AWB Bennett Guendozi

Have exact cash for Mikhi to Moura. Would you pull trigger before Moura price rise ?

Have Walcott and Zaha flagged but Bennett and AWB have good fixtures to cover if both injured next week. Can’t see Mikhi getting back in the Arsenal front 4 next week after they scored 3 (albeit against Cardiff)

    Unpopular opinion:

Lukaku is a great FPL option. His “donkey” nature is nothing but a media invention stemming from the witch hunt against him when he signed for United for what is commonly misperceived as an overpayment.

He is, however, notoriously seen as a flat track bully. With United’s upcoming fixtures he should be well in people’s thoughts - especially wildcarders.

Lukaku’s brilliant. Expensive though for someone playing for a team that don’t score that many goals.

Lukaku scores the majority of his goals v weaker teams. When there is a cluster of easy fixtures such as those United have upcoming it’s ideal. Last year United had 3 or 4 4-0 wins at the start when there was a bulk of easy fixtures.

I don't disagree with that. The question is you can probably only afford 3 of Kane/Hazard/Kun/Mane/Hazard/Salah/Lukaku. Is he a better option than all but 2 of those?

      1. Zladan
        • 6 Years

That is a fair question. The problem this year is that it isn’t so easy to have as many premium midfielders and attackers because the premium trio in defence - Robertson Alonso Mendy (RAM) - are absorbing funds we could otherwise reallocate.

If I was on a wildcard now, Aguero Kane Hazard Lukaku would be my top 4 priority in that order - RAM are a given (or at least AM).

Mané and, less so, Salah have certainly served well up until now. People have an attachment with these sort of players and have a reluctance to let them go. But wildcards are the chance to restructure to proven players with good upcoming fixtures.

The LFC duo can then be switched back in once the fixtures swing back in LFC favour.

I agree, he's always been a reliable captaincy option for me against lower sides. In the last two seasons combined I captained him 11 times and he never blanked.

I considered him - (used my wildcard gw3)
I think he is worth it for those who have thier wildcard still.
But I cannot afford him in my current team structure unless I sell aguero.
There are too many nicely priced strikers and midfielders at the moment so it makes it feasible to go without Lukaku.

These comments by Egersdorff amuse me:

“Working the figures again, this tells us Salah is under-performing against last year’s figures by around 15 percent, whereas Mane is massively overperforming, even when we factor in his 10-game absence last season."

“The question FPL managers need to ask themselves therefore is whether they feel Salah will make up the performance level deficit and return to the mean"

For some reason he seems to assume last season was the norm for Salah and he will return to the 'mean' of last season.
What if last season was not the norm for Salah and just an exceptional season?
I read a book called 'Thinking fast and slow' about how the mind makes decision based on previous performance / future performance / on the spot thinking etc. In this book there is one part which mentions the 'Sports Illustrated curse' where the athlete of the year does not perform as well the following season. In other words they regress to the mean thier real level after an exceptional season.

James also seems to assume or hope Mane cannot keep his form up.
What if Mane has improved as a player and is truly settled in the team?
That start of season 3.5m he had on Salah looks like a steal.

I never have had salah this season yet.
I didn't see the value in him pre-season and I still don't see the value in him.
13m is not worth it for me.
I much prefer Hazard, Mane and a decent mid-price midfielders.
I would actually pick Milner ahead of Salah if I was given the choice now.

You have a good point. But Egersdorff is basicly talking about underlying stats there. Mane's conversion is unsustainable and so is Salah's the other way around, even if they return to more "normal" levels (and not the "mean" from last year).

But when you say unsustainable it does not factor in that Mane seems more clinical then Salah.
Salah takes lots of shots I a agree, but he also hits lots off target.
That effects Salah's potential in the bonus points system as well.

Absolutely, and I agree with that explaining a lot until now. But for how long will that continue? Salah did this last year and was very wasteful at the beginning, but went on and smashed it for the rest of the season.

That maybe so, he will improve but I think the amount of outlay on him is not justified.
On Andy's you tube channel he did a comparison between Salah and Hazard for example - last two gameweeks.
              He was visibly shocked.
Personally I think there is almost a cult around Salah as he had an exceptional season last year, seems like a decent sort of fella etc.
There are other players in the game to choose from.

I think the point is that Salah's underlying stats this season are very similar to last season, and look like he hasnt dipped in form at all and should continue to score highly. Mane however is over achieving based on his XG and is likely to not keep up this rate. I think we can still use last season's stats as well as a basis for our predictions for this season.

Big fan of Thinking fast and Slow, but I don't think James's analysis is miles off, no one really expects Mane to hit 350+ points this season (do they?) There's no way his current scoring improvement is based on him improving that much over the summer, looking at his stats.

Salah almost certainly won't hit the heights of last season - if he can sustain that level of output he's heading towards Messi/Ronaldo levels. Not impossible, but surely not likely. But if he can get 20+ goals, and 10+ assists, that puts him at 200+ points. (Although he needs more than that to justify being a 13m perma-captain - I'm now going to review my position on this!)

But the question you ask is correct, which mean will Salah's performance revert to? Would be really interesting to see some analysis into the Sports Illustrated curse you mention, from a FPL perspective. If we could get an average drop for top scorers for the season we'd maybe get a decent estimate of his likely performance. Anyone know where we can get historic fantasy points from? I can't find them in the members area anywhere.

Some posters on here keep spreadsheets of the previous points.
I suppose the easier way is to look at the players fpl history.
I have changed my strategy slightly this year and try to look for real value players who are over-performing based on this season's price etc.
Also I am also trying to look at fellas who under-performed last year and should do better this season.
It is easier said then done as the creativity/threat stats on the fpl site only reflect the season as a whole.
But I find just watching the games and looking at the players who look lively (although not getting fpl points) helps.
Basically I am trying to stay ahead of the curve if I can this season, and only jump on bandwagons that look like value, if not go elsewhere.

You make a good point. The only accurate thing we can say is that Salah is having a worse season so far compared to his 17/18 average and that Mane is having a better season so far compared to his 17/18 average. Everything else is an opinion.

Not that stats mean anything. Salah looks like a headless chicken, a bit frustrated too, while Mane is looking hungry yet stops playing after getting that 1 goal that he wants. His incredible conversion rate is just the way he rolls. One shot, one goal. Players shoot from different positions, and with different skill, so there's no such thing as a universal xG denominator that would apply to all players. Mane will definitely never revert to a "normal" xG player.

Stats are for people who don't understand sports.

I recommend The Art of Thinking Clearly. Should be read once a year.

      WC team:

      Patricio Norris
      Alonso Mendy Robertson AWB Bennett
      Salah Hazard Maddison Pedro 4.5
      Aguero Mitrovic Wilson

Pedro for Cardiff (H) in GW5, then transfer out to Richarlison when he is back from suspension. Think Maddison will be a huge OR raiser for Leicester's stunning run of fixtures coming up.
