Burnley’s fixtures easing up – but their defence remains a concern

With Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (a) and Huddersfield Town (h) next up for Burnley, the Clarets sit top of our Season Ticker for defence over the coming four Gameweeks.

All is not well at Turf Moor, however. A defence that performed so admirably and proved so popular among Fantasy bosses in 2017/18 that their goalkeeper and hitherto first-choice back four all rose to £5.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season have flattered to deceive.

Sean Dyche’s side have conceded as many goals after four league fixtures (nine) than they had after 12 matches of the previous campaign, offering little encouragement for those considering drafting in a Burnley defender for this quartet of upcoming encounters.

Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (£4.9m) were both dropped to the bench for the visit of Manchester United last weekend, with fatigue hardly a factor given that the full-back pair had both sat out the Thursday night encounter with Olympiakos.

Dyche’s comments after the match on Sunday acknowledged the repercussions of the Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround but implied that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) and Phil Bardsley‘s (£4.4m) inclusions at left-back and right-back respectively were merited on performance:

We’ve been trying to monitor the workload of the players, equally monitoring the ones who have laid down a little bit of a marker and done well.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) struggled against Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, not getting close enough to the Belgian forward for either of his goals and perhaps being fortunate not to concede a penalty when lunging at the United striker in the second half.

Mee could soon find his place in jeopardy from Kevin Long (£4.3m) or Ben Gibson (£4.9m), the latter having missed the defeat to the Red Devils with a stomach problem.

With such doubt over personnel and a lack of confidence in the backline as a whole, Burnley’s defenders are not quite the attractive proposition they ought to be for this run of matches between Gameweeks 5 and 8.

The all-important goals conceded column aside, though, are Dyche’s side statistically performing any worse than they were in 2017/18? Members can read on for our assessment of the Clarets’ defence.

Presently sat on a miserable 214pts with an OR of 1,726,000.

Only positive is that with everyone squeezed together atm, I'm only 42pts off a 1.5mil jump up the ranks.

It is making me think very seriously about hits. When each 4pt hit is worth about 140k to my ranking.

    Scary stuff.

Bear in mind that you're likely 40+ points off the pace cos your team isn't scoring anywhere near as well as it needs to currently

Most people will continue to accelerate away from you...it won't be a 40-point gap to the top 100K by October, it'll keep creeping up to 50, 60, 70...

You need to take action 🙂

Moving up to within the top 500000 is easy. Seriously, you’ll find that just playing the game seriously will see you up to the top half million, past all the ghost ships and part timers. Will take two months. After that it starts to get tough!

Tbh i wouldn't mind that OR at this stage of the season. I remember last season i was 1.9M at around this stage and ended up 2k OR in like 12-14 games later. Very early to panic. Play your game i would say.

Evening all! Just to try get some early ideas... what would you say are the best changes here? 1FT & 0ITB.

Mkhitaryan out perhaps? Can’t afford Moura unless it was a hit. Pedro or Maddison perhaps? Or just save FT?

    Patricio
    Mendy • Alonso • Robertson

I would wait as a few of your players have dropped in value but not likely to drop any more......another week on news on Zaha, Tomkins, Cairney and Miki......however if this does not clear up I think you would be better to use WC and get rid of all your problems, especially Kenedy, Hamer and get rid of Cairney

Mkhi to Maddison is my debate, especially with Vardy coming back.
If I was you I'd be mega tempted with a wildcard, Mkhi, Kenedy, Arnie, Zaha, Hamer, Tomkins and Cairney are all questionable in my opinion.

I think the popular opinion amongst WC ers is to ditch Mane for Haz given the fixture shift. I would actually keep since he looks like he is in for a special season. If not, hedge by setting up one of your players as a bank. That way you can do a double move to get Haz in if need be.

A good rule of thumb I use is that you always want to play the attacker over the defender. Wan B reminded me of that last week.

Depends on the defender and the fixture.

This rule of thumb doesn't hold the same sway as "never captain a defender"

...you'd never normally break this rule, however I'll quite often play 4 at the back and break the "attacker over defender" rule

I probably will around gw9. Easy swap from Sterling. I’ll be out of my own league if so. Just means that someone else will win the price.

          i've been looking at

          alonso robertson mendy
          salah mane hazard
          Aguero Mitrovic Ings

          with one of
          Bennett
          Wan B
          Guendouzi (4.5)
          Hojberg/gunnarson (4.4)

          rotating in every week.

          What do you think?

One of RAM kills it imo. Fullbacks are more prone to rotation so you’ll need decent coverage on the bench to go with the rotating fodder. WB the only real 4.0 option long term (Bennett - Dendoncker could happen).

yeh...it's too light in positions 11-15...but jesus that first 9 could get you 90 points a week if they all played

Not sure if it's worth it to go without Salah, but here's what I've come up with for a proposed WC team:

    Foster Fabianski
Robertson Mendy Alonso Boly Wan Bissaka
    Hazard Mane Maddison Fraser Ramsey
    Aguero Mitrovic Wilson

Could swap a mid for a 4.5 mid and swap Wilson for Vardy, but any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My only concern with Pedro is that he looks like he'll start from the bench.

      Ridiculous lucky returns

Guy had never scored a goal in PL, he scored two in three games. Mee was the most sensible choice to start with. Tarkowski owners have been ridiculously lucky to get those attacking returns

But of course, I didn't get him for the goal threat.

    -4 on

Someone reckons I should Wildcard so I thought I'd sign up here and ask for professional advice. Brackets show subs for next GW...

    De Gea (Speroni)
    Alonso Robertson Wan-Bissaka (Tarkowski), (Bednarek)
    Salah Pedro Jorginho Neves (Stephens),
    King Kane Aguero

    £0.1 in the bank...

....could just use free transfers to sort out King and Jorginho over the next few weeks and slowly improve my bench. What do you think?

    1. Warby84

Slow play can get you there no need to WC this squad since there aren’t any immediate non playing risks. Kane might even turn out to be a shrewd differential.

I do agree that you can get over this, neves might turn out ok, defence is a big worry for now.. Just think with so many great mid-priced options in mdf I find having Salah Kane + Aguero leaves a very imbalanced squad.. Even find that 0.6 for someone like Ryan Fraser would help the cause

    Give me your thoughts please
On WC and my front 7 currently looks like this:
Hazard Dilva maddison fraser (lerma 5th)
    Aguero vardy mitrovic

    3.5 itb
    Best way to spend it?
Don't want mane and will get salah after gw8

    A) upgrade fraser (to alli?)
    B) Dilva to sterling
    C) mitro to lacazette
    D) your suggestion?

    G: Ryan (Stekelenb)
D: Alonso, Mendy, VanDijk, WanB, Tomkins
M: Hazard, Mane, Bilva, Rich, Neves
    A: Kun, Zaha, Tosun

    1 FT o ITB

G: have to withstand 2 tough then its all green for Ryan
    D: VanDijk => Pereira ?
M: Bilva stays 3 more GWs, Rich is soon back
    A: Zaha => perhaps
