Burnley’s fixtures easing up – but their defence remains a concern

With Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (a) and Huddersfield Town (h) next up for Burnley, the Clarets sit top of our Season Ticker for defence over the coming four Gameweeks.

All is not well at Turf Moor, however. A defence that performed so admirably and proved so popular among Fantasy bosses in 2017/18 that their goalkeeper and hitherto first-choice back four all rose to £5.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season have flattered to deceive.

Sean Dyche’s side have conceded as many goals after four league fixtures (nine) than they had after 12 matches of the previous campaign, offering little encouragement for those considering drafting in a Burnley defender for this quartet of upcoming encounters.

Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (£4.9m) were both dropped to the bench for the visit of Manchester United last weekend, with fatigue hardly a factor given that the full-back pair had both sat out the Thursday night encounter with Olympiakos.

Dyche’s comments after the match on Sunday acknowledged the repercussions of the Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround but implied that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) and Phil Bardsley‘s (£4.4m) inclusions at left-back and right-back respectively were merited on performance:

We’ve been trying to monitor the workload of the players, equally monitoring the ones who have laid down a little bit of a marker and done well.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) struggled against Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, not getting close enough to the Belgian forward for either of his goals and perhaps being fortunate not to concede a penalty when lunging at the United striker in the second half.

Mee could soon find his place in jeopardy from Kevin Long (£4.3m) or Ben Gibson (£4.9m), the latter having missed the defeat to the Red Devils with a stomach problem.

With such doubt over personnel and a lack of confidence in the backline as a whole, Burnley’s defenders are not quite the attractive proposition they ought to be for this run of matches between Gameweeks 5 and 8.

The all-important goals conceded column aside, though, are Dyche’s side statistically performing any worse than they were in 2017/18? Members can read on for our assessment of the Clarets’ defence.

Any Schurrle fans around? Tell me more about your legend please. Seeing as I can't get Mitro without a hit, he'll have to do until I end up with spare cash.

Yeah, half decent fixtures for him to return the odd goal or two. Only 5.9m that too. Don't know much though.

Settling on this WC team now. Welcome any thoughts or observations, ta!

    Patricio - Hamer
    Alonso - Shaw - Mendy - Doherty - WB
    Salah - Hazard - Rich/Pedro - Milner - Billing
    Aguero - Vardy - Ings

    Any changes needed?

I think Vardy > Mitrovic/Wilson would allow Milner to David Silva?

I like Milner but fixtures are tough and may rotate with champions league

Too many going with Fraser and think he may dry up. Milner nice differential for same price with pens/corners/baps etc.

Think I’m going to stick with Pat as looks good and decent fixtures. Ryan is a good option and a bit risky with double wolves in defence so may take a look at this one again. Cheers!

Vardy has nice fixtures but I’m not sure he is value - better to wait and see IMO. Could downgrade to Mitrovic and that gives you a lot of cash to play with

Yeah for now. He rotates really well with Hamer if he can just get his spot back but not convinced he will.

May have to downgrade Doherty -> Bennett and free up 4.5 to get better rotation alternative. But will see what happens with Hamer first. Cheers

Gündogan > Fraser or other 6.4 MID for -4?

    Rest of squad:

    Hennessey / Fabianski
    Mendy / Doherty / Alonso / Pereira / Wan-Bissaka
    Hazard / Mkhitaryan / Pedro / Walcott / Gündogan
    Wilson / Aubameyang / Agüero

He's been on the edge for so long, it must be a lot of wildcarders that are transferring him out. Using a transfer on your 5th mid isn't the highest of priorities

Quite a sad depiction of the modern world really. We supposedly have everything we need at our fingertips yet really depression has never been more prevalent among populations. That said, there seems to be a lot more "encouraging depression" about anything and everything from what I see on social media which I personally don't think helps.

Might end up being Laca since Arsenal at least look somewhat competent in attack and could average 2-3 goals per match over this kind run. Not sure LEI will average that level of production but then again Vardy is nailed on. Tough one.

you think sterling will start 3 coming gameweeks?
May get him instead of dilva. On wc, have money itb. will get salah instead of sterling/dilva after gw8
I also can upgrade mitro or fraser but they seem to be good values?

    Front 7:

Hazard Dilva/sterling maddison fraser (lerma 5th)
    Aguero vardy mitro

3.5 itb with dilva in. How to use it ?

I’ve also been looking at Sterling. He’s in good form. Shame that Pep is overly rotation slap happy right now. Can’t sensibly plunk down that kind of cash on a player who isn’t a nailed starter every week. Maybe hold onto some of those funds in order to get Salah back in one move if this ends up blowing up in your face?

    Hazard B.Silva (R) Mkhitaryan (R) Mane
    King Aguero

Foster Hughes Zaha (I) Tomkins (I)

      Def don’t need a WC.

Really need Alonso but can only really get him by taking a hit or two :/

    De Gea
    Mendy Robertson Schlupp
    Mhkitrayan Salah Mane Pedro
    Arnautovic Aguero Mitrovic

    (Hamar, WB, Peltier, Stephens)

    0.0 itb 1ft

Any value in Gündogan > Fraser or other 6.6 MID for -4?

    Rest of squad:

    Hennessey / Fabianski
    Mendy / Doherty / Alonso / Pereira / Wan-Bissaka
    Hazard / Mkhitaryan / Pedro / Walcott / Gündogan
    Wilson / Aubameyang / Agüero

Yeah I'd be looking at playing him home to LEI, and all other home games as a minimum upto GW11

My thought process is that I have slight risks in my team with Miki and Walcott, so this could give me someone more nailed with good potential for some decent returns.

    Patricio - Hamer
    Robbo - Alonso - Mendy - Bennett - WB
    Salah - Hazard - Rich/Pedro - Neves - Hojbjerg
    Aguero - Vardy - Ings

    Pedro (6.7) vs Hazard (10.6)

I saw Hazard seemed to have more goal involvement as he tried shooting by himself, assisting, and also on penalty.

While, per match, Pedro had more Shots, SIB, and Shot on Target and he was more likely to be the one who received the final pass and shoot rather than assisting.

I feel Hazard would get more FPL points than Pedro from his involvements and regular starting. But I also feel Pedro Will Keep scoring goals which earn 5 FPL points per goal too.

Will the difference worth 4.0m more to invest in Hazard?

Yes. If pedro is getting rotated with Willian like it happened in last match. Unless Hazard moves to striker both aren't getting in the same team so a bit of rotation seems inevitable.

That’s my thinking yeah. Obviously DSilva is 1.4 (for me) more expensive (which is what I have ITB currently), but Pep does love the guy, he should be as nailed as anyone bar maybe Fernandinho with KDB absence, and has been playing great. Can’t reasonably see him being dropped for any reason other than if they are going to use him more in CL in a few weeks, whereas Mkhi, although being my only arsenal player (so I’m reluctant to lose, whilst I have Kun and Mendy for city already) is not as good a player but is over 1mil cheaper, but playing in a fairly rotation heavy squad too at the minute

Fulham have played 3 of the current bottom 6 teams in the league so some of their players (Schurrle, Mitrovic) have some decent stats as a result. In the next 8 weeks they face the second lowest average expected goals conceded. You can't expect the same results against their tougher opponents.

Southampton also haven't had a hard run to date but also are about to face the lowest average expected goal conceded in the next 8 weeks. I wouldn't expect a lot of returns from them either, so Ing's is not a great WC pick at all for me.

Don't get me wrong, if I had those players I'd definitely hold (I do have Ings) but on WC I wouldn't.

Form over fixtures is a great thought, but when does form come from easy fixtures and stop with hard fixtures? I'll post an analysis in 4 gameweeks.

Neves and Schurrle at 5.2 and 5.9 are a lot of money on the bench. I know having a strong bench looks good to the eye but you are just playing 11 players each week. Beyond one good bench option you are wasting money. If you don't need the money right now just keep it in the bank. Will be useful if you want to upgrade someone in the starting 11 in future.

No. Right now no one knows who is nailed in Arsenal team and they are either very expensive or just not worth the risk for what they give. Moura is a good option. The way he has played he will probably stay in the side despite those who say Son might take his place. And atleast Moura who is playing as a striker almost is worth the risk. Mkhi etc. aren't worth the risk and Laca or Auba are very expensive to risk rotation especially with Aguero, Mane and Hazard doing so well.

I assumed this is WC team. Downgrade Schurrle and you have the option of upgrading Ings who also might not play against Liverpool (I am not 100% sure) to Wilson who has a good run of fixtures coming up. You can easily get back Ings later if you feel he is better.

Currently sat on both Mkhi and Pedro after trying to avoid players with rotation risks.

My head says to bank a transfer and keep Mkhi,
so that I can swap him out for Richarlison next GW.

My heart wants to swap him this week for Maddison,
but that means I'd have to swap out Pedro if I wanted Richarlison...
and if I wanted Maddison after this GW, then i'll have lost 0.2/0.3m on the transfer due to his rise and Mkhi's drop(s).

Are you keeping or replacing Mkhi this week?

because sometime it was not correct base on the rule (my opinion), unfair and could cost me 1 H2H match in the cash league.

Politely asking FPL to review a decision dosen't sound bad to me. I have a business, a wife and a dog and still manage to spend atleast an hour on this site everyday. The internet has just made it easy for people to comment. I agree FPL can become too distracting sometimes but sending an email doesn't mean that.
