The FPL Digest: David Silva, impressive Cherries and bench fodder

Our Gameweek 4 coverage ends with this regular look back at a player, team and discussion point that attracted our interest in the weekend’s matches.

David Silva continues to excel, while Bournemouth‘s underlying statistics bode well for the six league matches ahead.

We also share our thoughts on squad depth as the fixture schedule gets ever more congested.

The Player

As we mentioned in our Scout Notes over the weekend, Fernandinho (£5.4m) is the only Manchester City midfielder to have started all four of the reigning champions’ Premier League fixtures this season.

The City midfield is even more of an FPL minefield this campaign, despite an extra starting berth having opened up when Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) was ruled out for three months with a knee injury ahead of Gameweek 2.

While Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) is the most-owned forward in the game and Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) has been selected by more than one in three FPL managers, City’s midfield assets are understandably being given the cold shoulder by the Fantasy community with rotation now in operation: not one of their players in this position is owned by more than 9% of managers. Bernardo Silva (£7.6m), the Sky Blues’ most-selected midfield asset, is only the 15th-most-popular midfielder in FPL overall.

While the stock of Riyad Mahrez (£8.8m) and especially Leroy Sane (£9.2m) continues to nosedive, David Silva‘s (£8.5m) popularity has quietly been growing.

The 32-year-old Spaniard has started every league match in which he has been available this season, with Pep Guardiola retrospectively revealing that Silva’s absence from City’s Gameweek 1 squad was down to a leg injury.

Though he emerged from the 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday evening with nothing but appearance points, Silva’s performance is deserving of wider scrutiny from a Fantasy perspective.

“El Mago” had more attempts on goal, shots in the box and penalty box touches than any other player on show at the Etihad – including Aguero and Gabriel Jesus (£10.4m) – while no-one on either side created more chances for their team-mates than Silva.

Eden Hazard (£10.7m) was the only FPL midfielder to have more touches in the opposition area than Silva in Gameweek 4, while no-one in the Spanish playmaker’s position registered more shots from inside the box in the weekend just gone.

Despite making only three appearances this season, just two midfielders – last season’s top FPL scorers in Mohamed Salah and Raheem Sterling – have been more active in the penalty box than Silva in 2018/19.

Silva’s rate of key passes this season – a chance created every 19 minutes – is also better than any FPL midfielder who has made more than one league start.

The consensus that Silva’s ability to unpick stubborn defences would be needed all the more in De Bruyne’s absence has certainly panned out in recent weeks, even if “Merlin” has only the one goal to show for his impressive underlying statistics.

As Silva’s penalty box touch count shows, though, he isn’t been asked to sit as deep as one would expect De Bruyne to: in three Premier League starts this season, Silva already has over a quarter of the penalty box touches that his injured Belgian colleague managed in the whole of 2017/18.

Silva’s own personal goal threat averages are also way up on those recorded in City’s most recent title-winning campaign.

Granted, Silva is as much at risk of rotation as any of Guardiola’s midfielders, even more so when the UEFA Champions League group stage gets underway. We can expect him to start more league matches than not, though, particularly in this run of fixtures in which his artistry is required to help break down sides that are happy to cede possession and attempt to suffocate City’s attack.

At £8.5m, Silva is perhaps available at a price that would mean the odd no-show in the league wouldn’t be too disastrous for his owners – his cheaper cost than Raheem Sterling (£11.0m), for example, meaning that the extra budget could be used to improve a fodder-heavy substitutes’ bench.

Some observers would naturally point to Bernardo’s case, in that a hitherto “nailed” City midfield pick was suddenly dropped to the bench without warning despite impressing. David Silva, though, is outperforming his Portuguese team-mate across the board in terms of underlying goal threat and would appear more likely to return FPL points when he does feature.

An FPL rotation risk he most certainly is – but while De Bruyne remains crocked, Silva is perhaps the only City player with the capacity to match the Belgian’s ingenuity in midfield.

The Team

Though they succumbed to their first league defeat of the season at Stamford Bridge at the weekend, there was plenty of encouragement for Bournemouth and the owners of their FPL assets in their 2-0 reverse to Chelsea.

The Cherries sit top of our Season Ticker for the next six matches – before their fixtures take a turn for the worse from Gameweek 11 onwards – and Eddie Howe’s side would appear to represent excellent value for money from now until the end of October.

Bournemouth arguably merited a point in west London on Saturday, their uncharacteristically solid defensive display highlighted by the fact that Chelsea didn’t have a single “big chance” all match. The Cherries, meanwhile, carved out two clear-cut opportunities of their own: Nathan Ake (£5.0m) and Callum Wilson (£6.2m) both missing from close range with the score at 0-0.

The Cherries’ underlying statistics across the season are heartening: no Premier League club has created more clear-cut chances than Bournemouth this season, with no side outside of the “big six” registering more shots inside the opposition box.

No FPL forward has registered more penalty box touches or attempts from inside the area as Wilson in 2018/19.

Ryan Fraser (£5.6m), meanwhile, has created more big chances than any FPL player this season.

While the south coast side have always been attractive to watch going forward, a question mark has hung over their defence ever since their promotion from the Football League: no top-flight side recorded fewer clean sheets (six) than the Cherries last season.

Their defensive statistics this season are all the more eye-catching as a result.

No side have allowed their opponents fewer big chances than Bournemouth after the first four Gameweeks of this campaign, while Watford are the only team outside of the “big six” to have conceded fewer shots on target.

Bournemouth’s opponents in their next league fixture, Leicester City, sit joint-bottom by way of shots in the box.

While Fraser, Wilson and Josh King (£6.4m) are the more obvious targets, Bournemouth’s defence is worthy of consideration for the next half-dozen matches.

While more expensive than the other Cherries’ stoppers around him, Ake has had more big chances than any FPL defender this season and could quite easily add another attacking return to the goal he scored against Everton in Gameweek 3 – as well as converting those notable underlying defensive numbers into a clean sheet or two.

Steve Cook (£4.6m), who also has a league goal to his name already this season, is another who couples potential defensive returns with a real goal threat from set-pieces.

Diego Rico (£4.5m), in for the injured Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) this weekend, is one to watch too: the Spanish left-back seems set to be heavily involved in dead-ball situations and hit the bar with a free-kick in the EFL Cup match against MK Dons last week.

The Talking Point

With the start of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League group stages now just around the corner and rotation in full swing before we’ve even reached the first international break, the days of owning unplayable bench fodder may now be at an end.

While it is tempting to chase form players such as Marcos Alonso (£6.8m) and Sadio Mane (£9.9m) on a weekly basis and upgrade our premium picks to assuage the fear of missing out on yet more double-digit hauls, Fantasy bosses may soon have to make some “unsexy” transfer moves in order to ensure a full starting XI every week.

Those who have wildcarded will likely have already addressed the issue regarding the non-playing budget members of their squad, but for those hoping to keep this sacred chip in their pocket for a little while longer, as much attention arguably needs to be paid to positions 12-15 as it does the starting XI.

The benchings of Bernardo Silva, Pedro (£6.8m) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.2m) last weekend, Ben Davies (£5.8m) in Gameweek 3 and Kyle Walker and Raheem Sterling a week before that are portentous signs, especially with the “big six” about to embark on a month-long run of playing two matches a week.

While these players are just as likely to emerge from the bench for an irksome “one-pointer” as remain an unused substitute, provisions have to be made for the latter eventuality.

Surprise injury-related omissions such as Wilfried Zaha‘s (£7.0m) in Gameweek 4 only compound the problem.

The likes of Lee Peltier (£3.9m), Jan Bednarek (£3.9m), Markus Suttner (£4.0m), Aboubakar Kamara (£4.5m) and Collin Quaner (£4.4m) are now luxuries – if that’s the right word – we can’t afford, and while a sideways move (or slight upgrade) to an Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.1m) or Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) are somewhat irritating free transfers to make, the lull of the international break seems to be an appropriate time to address these growing concerns. A squad of 12 or 13 playing outfielders may not even be enough in the autumn ahead.

This is my current team. Would you activate the wildcard? I want two new GK's and possibly Hazard and Wilson. Mkhi and Townsend may need to go and possibly Auba due to playing LW.

    Foster / Fabianski
    Mendy / Robertson / Alonso / AWB / Bedrenak
    Salah / Fraser / Townsend / Mkhi / Stephens
    Mitrovic / Auba / Aguero.

Light in midfield ... but you could sort it with a -4 rather than WC. I like your attacking line. Think Auba is worth keeping the faith in

Just -8pts can do the trick since your core players are good. Somethin like Auba-Townsend to Wilson-Hazard or Laca-Pedro or Vardy-Pedro can do the trick

Is no one looking at Lukaku as an option? United have excellent fixtures and he'll be involved in the majority of their goals

United aren't performing well enough for his price tag, and other options seem better - Aguero/Kane/Auba/Laca/Vardy as well as the cheaper strikers that are doing well right now

Good option, think he's top of the shots on target, and shots in the box tables?
      Nailed on for United.
But he's more about steady returns than the potential explosiveness of an Aguero, or Salah

      1. RustyBz

true, think last week was his first brace since debut. However, I reckon he's one big GW away from everyone here jumping on the wagon.

Aguero scoring in 1/4 is not good especially how there's always that anxious moment before lineups are announced for city

Mate I totally agree on Aguero, had a good debate with someone earlier this week saying that I would probably lose Aguero if I was WC'ing this week. Blanks against Arsenal, Wolves, and Newcastle (well a very cheap assist) but nowhere near the returns we'd expect from him, people treating him like he's essential, and as you say, always that concern he'll be rested...highly unlikely Lukaku, or Kane will ever be rested...even though Kane clearly needs it.

    Hennessey 4.0
    Alsonso Shaw Mendy Bennett WB
    Hazard Neves Schurrle Salah 4.5
    Aguero Ings Laca

Thoughts on this? Is pereyra a better shout than schurrle? Was also set on laca out until he last gw so not sure if Arnie an mitro is better than the current strike force

    Aguero / Mitrovic / Wilson

Wanted Salah back after thinking mane won't keep up his current form.

Also don't like having too much money tied up on the bench and i can rotate wan B / Cedric/ Bennett accordingly

Out of curiosity If/when Kane starts banging in the goals how are people planning on getting him into your teams? Will it be the Aguero transfer leaving teams with just one or maybe two city players which is very dangerous for when they decicde to turn it on and beat teams by 3 or 4 goals.

For 12.5m he needs to bang in a lot of goals absoluely and relatively vs. using the money and captain elsewhere, so a consideration for much later personally.

Ha, I love that last line, 'when they decide to turn it on, and beat team w/ 3/4 goals'....because I guess they decided it wasn't worth beating Wolves, you know just to make the league still look slightly competitive.

Lol what I meant was that imo when playing their best City/Pool have the ability and look like they can score silly amount of goals compared to other teams in the top 6.

Of course they can score crazy goals.
For the record I already have Kane...and Aguero, and Salah so hopefully I'm covered.

            What makes you think that?
            PL top scorer in 15/16
            PL top scorer in 16/17
PL 2nd top scorer in 17/18
            World Cup golden boot 2018
...and 2 more goals than he usually has at this time of the calendar year.
No competition for his place as centre forward.

Fair enough mate, you could be right of course, I just think given his PL history there's nothing to suggest he won't be up there again at the end of this season.
In regard to your comment below, in previous seasons players such as Son, Alli, and Lamela have all played further forwards (when looking at a heat map) than Kane, but he always finishes way ahead in terms of goals scored, I think it's down to him being able to score all sorts of goals...and penalties too of course.

Not eyeing him up just yet but have done a 'mock WC' which fits him and Aguero in my side along with Mitrovic.

Going Salahless + fairly light in midfield to achieve this (Haz, Mane, Fraser, Maddison), plus only spending 8.5 on keepers, and going with Doherty over Robertson.

Pretty severe compromises there, so as the other commenters have mentioned, he needs to be showing proper Harry Kane form before I pull that particular trigger.

I see you've also bottled pulling the WC trigger! I didn't either, really I just wanted to get Alonso in, and I couldn't do it without losing a player I wanted more.

I'm still considering Luiz and De Gea to Alonso and 4.5m keeper for a -4...but not totally convinced.

Yeah I just did Alonso early to catch price rise and I'll wait on others I want. Side looks fine for GW5 but considering one for GW6.

Yeah I think if you've stuck with DDG this long (as I have as well) then the next 4 are when it could pay off... hopefully.

Also a -4 would hurt a lot more doing it by taking out Luiz. Effectively losing clean sheet points before the game's even started... not sure that's worthwhile even for MA.

        Thoughts on this WC?

Not certain on second keeper or fifth mid. Also interested in Moura, Dilva, Wilson and obviously Salah.

        Patricio
        Alonso - Mendy - Robertson
        Hazard - Mane - Maddison - Fraser
        Aguero - Vardy - Mitrovic

        Hennessey - AWB - Holebas - Hojbjerg

Hazard, Mane, Aguero and Mitro - great picks.

What about downgrading one of Maddison or Vardy and try to bring David Silva or Moura in?

How many goals do you expect City to score in the next 3 fixtures? I expect nothing less than 10.

Is it not shrewd to go with 2 City attackers for the next 3?

Many managers don't have that luxury atm. Few have Ederson and Bilva as their 3rd City player but they don't instil much confidence. Dilva is an option but not explosive enough.

Is it time to get Sterling (probably the most nailed mid alongside Dilva) with Aguero? They both combined well and wrecked havoc last season.

              Salah.
I’m not paying 11m for a midfielder who I’m never going to captain when I have Aguero.
If I didn’t have Kun then maybe I would consider him but it’s one of for me.
Think Hazard is a better option for less as well.

                Fair enough.

I'd have Salah back in GW 9 and won't captain him in GW 5,7,8 if I had him. Hence the Sterling punt.

I agree. If I had a spare FT and a spare city spot then Salah > Sterling for a few weeks could be a considered.
My FTs probably going to focus on Mkhitarian and Zaha availability though.

Staying ahead of the curve and getting the next big haul player earlier than others separates the best from the rest.

I had Kun and Mendy only. However, as I am wildcarding now, as City's short-term fixtures look amazing and as David Silva seems nailed and involved in the whole attacking process, I am bringing him in.

You are rights. However Sterling, namely with CL starting, does not seem nailed in my opinion. 11m for a player that is not nailed for now, and provides the risk of a 1 point cameo, is too much of a risk in my opinion.

If Sterling and Silva were at the same price (or a difference of 0.5) I would surely go for Sterling. However 2.5m is a lot

I kind of think Sterling is nailed now. He had his rest in GW 2 and that was needed post world cup. Now, that City are trailing Liverpool by 2 points and Sane has had his problems with Mahrez not yet settled, I feel Sterling is very nailed.

Mendy, Sterling & Kun since gw2. Will probably turn Sterling into Salah if he starts banging them in.

Easy for me to say as a non Salah owner 😆 I didn’t even follow my own advice. Captained Kun... It’s Haz vs Kun for me. Don’t have the balls to go Sterling.

Gung-ho Fulham at home for City so I’m leaning towards Kun atm. Chelsea haven’t convinced me as bus destroyers yet.

Please help me all my friends here FFS.
Currently considering to buy Aubameyang or Lukaku, seems both of them start scoring trend.

              Please RMT my current squad:

              Kepa - McCarthy
              Robertson - Mendy - Alonso - Shaw - Holebas
              Mane - Hazard - Moura - Neves - Schurrle
              Aguero - Mitrovic - Ings

Thinking of Arsenal and Man Utd firepowers as they start to win now. Need everyone opinion to improve my team.
              Thanks in advance.

Utd only won against a tired Burnley - I'd wait on their Watford game before getting any attackers in. Not sure on Auba over Ings / Mitro either really, but if you're set on it...

Change Neves and McCarthy to cheaper options. You'll never play McCarthy with Kepa there, and you don't need your 8th attacker to cost 5.2M.

You'll also never play those 5 defenders. Change Shaw or Holebas to a 4.0, or even Peltier at 3.9. They'll never get on the pitch.

                  Thanks for your advice Graham.
Will try to change McCarthy, but he is already cheap.
Do you have any suggestion who to buy?

Any of the 4.0 keepers - as you've got Kepa playing every game, they just need to stay on the bench and not take up an extra 0.5 of budget.

Graham, is it possible to switch Kepa and McCarthy week-in week-out if they face difficult opponent? Or better to stick with one keeper only. Thanks again for your good advice.

Better to stick with Kepa mate, even if Chelsea have tougher fixtures than Southampton, that won't happen all that often - and just means you have 0.5M sat on your bench most weeks, which could otherwise be used to improve your side.

              Schemeichel McCarthy
              Alonso Mendy Trippier Holebas WanB
              Mane Hazard Moura Fraser Maddison

Bottomed / no one cares 😉

On a WC starting to really like the look of this...
              Pat (Hamer)
              Alonso Mendy Holebas (TAA AWB)
              Hazard Mane Dilva Pogba (Billing)
              Kun Mitro Ings
              0.1 itb
Not sure about TAA could downgrade to a 4.5 and upgrade Hamer to Foster or another playing 4.5 or I could get Chilwell or Pereira?

I don't know... Holebas is a tricky one because of assist potential, he's not easy to bench on fixtures alone.
I could go Shaw instead of TAA and just have Holebas as 1st bench most weeks.

If you're bench is fine and you can see where the pip gained can help and can stomach losing the bet then go for it. It's a risk-on approach so make sure you're comfortable with it, if not don't.

Auba owners, how are you feeling?

I have had him sinec GW1, for the easy fixtures and he has delivered a goal and 2 bonus since the ‘easy’ fixtures have come into play.

I see a lot of people talking of shifting him out and I struggle to see why if not on a WC? I’m looking to keep, I think he could really develop a good relationship with Laca and bring the bacon home, especially with the fixtures ahead of him.

Ok, what to do with this lot? Decent start with 296 points and placed around 13,5k.

                  McCarthy
                  Mendy - Robertson - Alonso
                  Neves - Salah - Mané - B.Silva - Mkhitaryan
                  Agüero - Tosun

                  Bench: Hamer, Bissaka, Kamara, Peltier.

                  0.4M ITB, 1FT.

Hate hits.. But looks like my midfield might need one with B.Silva and Mkhitaryan losing their places. Maybe those two out and transfer in D.Silva and Fraser..? Maybe keep B.Silva for this GW.

Could do those two transfers for next GW. Then aiming to get in Richarlison and Wilson for Neves and Tosun for another hit..

                  Thoughts?

B Silva & Mhki out for a hit!

David Silva & Fraser look like good replacements.

What was the Walcott injury? Bruised ribs or hip?
