FPL Question Time – Hazard, defence strategy and Mkhitaryan replacements

It’s a Scoutcast special of FPL Question Time this week as three very familiar names share their insights into the “trending” discussion points ahead of Gameweek 5.

As ever we were inundated with requests for our panel, so we’ve taken three of the most popular subjects and asked our trio of Fantasy doyens questions around those recurring themes.

Eden Hazard‘s name repeatedly cropped up, as did Pedro‘s – so both of these Chelsea midfielders are covered in the posers to our panel below.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan‘s one-minute cameo in Gameweek 4 was the source of much frustration for his Fantasy owners and the basis for several of our site users’ questions about mid-price replacements for the Arsenal man.

With the UEFA Champions League looming on the horizon, we’ve also pondered whether premium defender rotation should start to enter our thinking.

Unfortunately, we can only ask our panel a handful of questions each week but we very much appreciate all the requests and encourage you to keep your queries coming in throughout the season.

Anyone who regularly tunes in to our weekly Scoutcast will need little introduction to this week’s panel, but for the uninitiated, they are:

  • Andy – the creator of the excellent YouTube channel Let’s Talk FPL, who has six top 25k finishes (two inside the top 10,000) to his name in eight seasons of playing FPL.
  • Az – another well-known name on Twitter and beyond, who cracked the top 1k in 2017/18 (finishing with an enviable overall rank of 817) after previously having recorded two finishes inside the top 5,000.
  • Joe – the host of our Scoutcast – plus many other weekly videos – and who sits 79th in our Career Hall of Fame, having recorded seven top 10,000 finishes in ten seasons of playing FPL (including an “OR” of 840 in 2013/14).

Question One – Andy

Q. How essential is Eden Hazard given the upcoming stretch of fixtures/rotation for Champions League-involved premium midfielders? Is it worth a hit to get him in now?

Andy: “Essential is a term that gets thrown around a lot in FPL circles but often doesn’t deserve to be used.

“I think that’s the case with Eden Hazard. Does he look like a good option? Absolutely. Is he essential at £10.7m with so many other options to fit in? I’d argue not.

“Take David Silva for example. The Spaniard has played a very similar amount of minutes to Hazard, created three more chances, had two more shots in the box and the same amount of penalty area touches. All that for £2.2m less.

“We could see some rotation in the Champions League but I think this is often something we overthink as FPL managers. At most you’re probably likely to see the first XI players rested for one game, but not two or three in a short space of time.

“There’s no guarantee that Hazard himself won’t play in the Europa League and could see his minutes reduced in the Premier League. We will have to see how Maurizio Sarri views the Europa League versus concentrating on the Premier League itself.

“There’s no doubting that with penalties in his locker, an attack-minded manager to set him free, and his general footballing talent that he’ll score points and will do well over the coming fixtures. To answer the question though, I don’t see him as essential just yet and I’m not convinced he’s worth the hit in most cases.”

Question Two – Joe

Q. Is there a case for switching to budget, reliable defensive options who play week-in, week-out now that rotation of the premium defenders looms on the horizon? Or would you rather stick with the premiums and navigate the rough waters of rotation?

Joe: “With compass in hand I’m ready to navigate the choppy seas of rotation with this season’s three premium defensive sensations at my side, Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson, Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso and Benjamin Mendy of Manchester City.

“Why would I ditch one of a trio that so far this season have returned points in all four of their fixtures, accumulating an eye-popping 108 points between them? For less than £7.0m each that represents a return on investment that Fantasy Premier League managers dream of.

“Of the three it is perhaps Robertson who is most at risk as the Reds face a daunting September run that takes in Spurs, Southampton and Chelsea in the League, the Blues again in the League Cup and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. The Saints game or the Chelsea cup game look the most likely times for him to miss out.

“But I’m willing to wager that if dropped for Champions League or Europa League action that all of this trio are likely to earn a full rest. So for me, the question is not, should we jettison good players because they may miss the odd game, but should we make sure we have a strong bench to cope?

“I have three playable bench assets ready for the coming threat of rotation. In fact, I almost welcome it as I gaze at the 16 points from Willy Boly over the last two weeks firmly nailed to my bench.”

Question Three – Az

Q. Who is the best Henrikh Mkhitaryan replacement? I’m looking at Pedro for his amazing stats and how direct he is, but Willian is making this move really tough.

Az: “It wouldn’t be possible to talk about sub-£7.0m options without mentioning Pedro. He has three goals in four games, plays for an unbeaten Chelsea side and has Cardiff and West Ham in the next two games. You’re right that he’s very direct and his stats are pretty decent for his price – the trouble is, will he play enough to be involved in enough goals?

“A lack of certainty of starts is the exact reason you are looking to shift Mkhitaryan after all, so you are potentially using a transfer to give yourself the same headache. The difference is, however, that while Mkhitaryan’s stock seems to be on the wane with the incredible performance of Lacazette, Pedro’s brief, goalscoring cameo against Bournemouth surely suggests that he will get the start against the Bluebirds.

“I actually think, despite some reservations about Pedro’s game-time, the lack of real options in the sub-£7.0m bracket make him one of the ideal replacements – particularly if you are keeping your wildcard to use in the next few weeks when the fixtures toughen up for Chelsea and you’d be looking to move him on anyway.

“It would be typical of Willian though if he ruins Pedro’s FPL appeal by coming on for him – or starting in his place again – especially as I am considering making the switch; as if the Brazilian needed any more reasons to prove what a broken cog he is in the FPL wheel.

“I say that Pedro is ‘one’ of the ideal replacements for Mkhitaryan because I also think people are still overlooking James Maddison. His ownership remains at 3.2%, and yes, I am a bit of Maddison fan-boy, but for me, he is the type of player that FPL is all about. Incredibly involved in the attacking phases and at set-piece situations, he is looking more and more like the talisman of Leicester that I hope he’d be when I started the season with him.

“His next four fixtures – Bournemouth (a), Huddersfield (h), Newcastle (a), Everton (h) – to me, could not be better. I am as sure as you can be in FPL that in one of those games, he is going to get a double-digit score and the bandwagon will be in full force.

“He’s been pretty ‘lucky’ in terms of returns so far, with a deflected goal and a very fortunate assist, but he passes the eye test whenever I watch Leicester play and looks like he is really settling into the Premier League. I’m expecting big things from him in the coming weeks.”

I was wondering that as well.

Must be fairly representative outside of Ghost teams I guess and probably very representative of top 10K once we are a few weeks in.

    Thoughts on this wc team

    Ederson
    Alonso, Mendy, Pereira, Rob
    Haz, Maddison, Fraser
    Lukaku, Aguero, Mitro

    4.0 - AWB, Hughes, Stephens

  5. Don Rogers FC

    Ederson (Speroni)
    Alonso, Robertson, Mendy (Tomkins, Peltier)
    Wally, Salah, Neves, Mkhi, (Stephens)
    Kun, Firmino, King
    0.2 ITB

I’ve taken far too many hits in previous seasons and determined not to this year.

I’ve considered WC ing this team which includes a number of ‘out of favour’ players and a weak bench. I am obviously concerned about Wally and Tomkins.

However, I am actually tempted to keep my 1ft and Give Firmino, King, Mkhi one more chance and then have 2 ft to do something with next week. Somewhat 'Wally-news' dependent though I guess.

    Any Thoughts?

I notice in the big Liverpool Midfield debate, the options generally seem to be:

    (a) Get Salah
    (b) Get Mane
    (c) Get Salah & Mane

But I'm on a wildcard and considering getting neither.

Might be foolish, as Liverpool have looked great. Salah has good underlying stats (and the history) and Mane has performed amazingly so far. And yet...

If you are factoring Liverpool's tough fixtures in and thinking that Salah is expensive for this run, well, Mane isn't cheap either. You can get David Silva for 1.5 less, or Hazard for a little more. (If you have had Mane from the start it's a different argument, you'd definitely be going for option B or C above.) Both are equally likely to be rested / subbed early with the Champions League in mind. Another big factor is captaincy. It'll be Hazard or Aguero for at least the next four weeks, for me...

I currently have Robertson in my draft, but may actually end up dropping him, too. I think of the three he's actually most likely to miss a game.

Anyone else thinking they may risk going Liverpool-free for a few weeks?

Liverpool is not type of club that have prob in def, attack. They could score against anyone. So not having at least one is very brave indeed! I have all three.

Had Mane and Robbo since the start, keeping both as I think both represent good value. Probably going without Salah

It's a difficult one, as they do have some difficult fixtures ahead; but they have easy fixtures between those more difficult ones.

      TOT (A),SOU (H),CHE (A),MCI (H),HUD (A),CAR (H),ARS (A),FUL (H),WAT (A),EVE (H),BUR (A),BOU (A),MUN (H)

You are right, however. They may rest them and it will likely be for those easier fixtures that they do so. I am sticking with Mane alone for now, but will bring in Alisson before GW9 to replace for a few weeks.

Stones is a bit too much of a rotational risk for me however, he has featured so far and you do have fairly decent cover so if you're willing to risk it. Tarkowski is a different sort of risk, will start and has scored this year already but Burnley haven't been looking as solid at the back. They are however, now out of Europe now with pretty good fixtures. If you really prefer a city defender maybe Laporte will do the trick

    Current team below.

    Fab
    Robertson - Mendy - Coleman* - Alonso
    Mkha* - Salah - Mané - Fraser
    Agüero - Zaha

    Bench: Foster - Kamara - Neves - Wan-Bissaka

Fairly template but got some problem players (*). Any thoughts on what to do with my 1 FT?

I am thinking of holding on for now and having 2 next week.

I was even thinking of getting Hazard in for Salah for a few weeks until i wildcard and switch back...

      So basically:

      A) Robertson, Mané, Lukaku, Hojberg
      B) TAA, Salah, Wilson, Fraser

Tough one. I’ll go B, simply because I’m of the view that Salah will sufficiently outscore Mané (a view based on their respective underlying stats) in the upcoming stretch of games to make it worthwhile, particularly as a bankable captaincy option.

      1. Gudjohnsen

Ahh true, make the Mane in option A into David Silva. Still probably prefer B. Can’t help but feel that holding both Mo and Mané through this tough period might be a missed opportunity for points elsewhere though.

Thought I would probably hop back onto Richarlison after his ban finishes as I thought Everton's run of good games continued for quite a while but actually in five Gameweeks they play Arsenal, Leicester and Man Utd all away from home.

Granted, Arsenal is tough to peg as a 'difficult' game for an attacker, and I played Arnautovic there. But I reckon Maddison + Fraser are probably just edging ahead of him.

Might need some time to rediscover form after his RC anyway.

I'm probably the only person thinking about it this deeply tbh...

I agree with you. I am planning on shipping Walcott out next week so will be looking to either move to Madisson or Richarlison. I imagine Madisson will be solid but he's nowhere near as explosive as Richarlison. I feel Richarlison can easily get double figures as he already has shown while Maddisons points will be more steady. For me, right now I'm going Richarlison despite the tough fixtures. Everton are so attacking I imagine they can score away in the tough games. I remember last year Richarlison away at Chelsea and he got double digit returns

Yeah its a fair point. I'm sure he could score in those games, he's the type of player that can pop up with something.

I might find a way to get him and Maddison in. Perfectly feasible to go with Salah - Hazard - Madd - Rich behind Wilson - Mitro - Aguero.

Just means you avoid Arsenal / Pep roulette & go without Spurs forwards.

Should I work further on this wildcard or can I stop tinkering this?

    Ryan - Patricio/Begovic
    Alonso - Mendy - TAA - (Bennett - AWB)
    Mane - Hazard - D Silva - Fraser - (Hojbjerg)
    Aguero - Vardy - Mitrovic

I dont like TAA. Maybe Shaw? if he out, you can play Bennett

Im on WC too, almost the same team.

I'm thinking TAA > Bournemouth defender.

I have Hamer as my 2nd GK, so this could save you some extra (for Fraser > Rich next GW?)

My WC appears to boil down to decisions on two key positions. Thoughts?

    Ryan | Button
    Alonso | Mendy | Robertson | XXX | WanB
    Salah | Hazard | XXX | Fraser | Billing
    Kun | Mitrovic | Ings

    A) Silva + Bennett
    B) Moura + Shaw
    C) Maddison + Trippier

Depend on what startegy you want.

      A. 3-4-3 everyweek.
B and C different formation depend on fixture.

      I personally have B. So b

I had B locked in as well until Shaw’s injury. If we get an indication that he’ll only miss one match at most I’d definitely consider just leaving him in tbh, I think he’s great value for that price.

    2. Triple P

      A.

I think B and C will both give you issues who to bench

        True, thanks 🙂

My thinking was that they are dilemmas I’m relatively comfortable having and which will often present a clear solution. Examples being Mitrovic away at City this week and Ings ineligible the following week. Flexible, without feeling like I’m wasting too much money on the bench.

Cheers 🙂 My only worry with A is the inflexibility should Bennett lose his place to Dendoncker. Planning possibly too far ahead here, but that scenario would see me stuck with WanB as my only viable sub across his terrible run from GW10 to GW13.

Beginning to look like a consensus is forming in favour of A though!

Probably B for the home fixture against notoriously shot shy, out of form Burnley. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see palace notch a clean sheet too though.

Hi All, was wondering if the target rate from this site http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/ must get up to 100.1 or so in order for a player then to go up or down in price. Under 100.0 prices won't move?

    1. Licious Lizard
      • 11 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

Yes it’s 100 and -100 thresholds, but it isn’t so accurate where 100 or 100.1 really makes a difference

Yes, but is only an indication. Not exact science. Have seen players rise and drop at 90 + or - respectively too.

Best to use it as a guide to which players are imminent risers/droppers in next day or 2

Yer that could work unless Burnley have had the builders in.

Was getting itchy fingers myself but feel like a diff. captain this week and it's Huddersfield after all. Glad I held.

I've got Mkhi and Bilva currently on-pitch with Holebas as first sub, AWB second. Cairney injured. No FTs.

Would anyone just swap Holebas in for Mkhi, and then hope Bilva plays?

Or use my cash ITB to go Bilva -> Dilva for a hit?

Wouldn't usually do that, but these are strange times...

    Hey guys. Advice appreciated.

    A) Robertson and Neves
    B) Laporte/Shaw and Fraser

OR, in the event I decide to upgrade a striker rather than a midfielder:

    C) Robertson and Kamara
    D) Shaw and Ings/Jiminez

I'm really stuck on this one.

    After WC:

    Patricio / Foster
    Alonso / Robbo / Mendy / WB / Bennett
    Pereyra / Fraser / Salah / Hazard / Hojbjerg
    Mitro / Ings / Agüero

    How is my team looked?

    Cheers
