FPL Gameweek 5 – Team News Round-up

Uncertainty still surrounds the availability of several widely owned Fantasy Premier League assets this evening, with the Thursday and Friday press conferences not providing the unambiguous injury updates we had yearned for.

The 9% of FPL managers who own Luke Shaw (£5.1m) have had a rollercoaster week with one media report contradicting the other regarding his recovery from a concussion, and Friday was no different.

Jose Mourinho had effectively given Shaw the all-clear in his press conference earlier today, stating that the Manchester United medical department had declared him available for selection.

Mourinho himself, however, said that he “didn’t know” whether he would pick Shaw for the trip to Vicarage Road tomorrow and reports in the press this afternoon suggested the England full-back was not with the travelling party heading to Watford.

Those FPL bosses sitting on Ryan Fraser (£5.6m), Theo Walcott (£6.7m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) also face a nervous wait once the Gameweek 5 deadline passes, with little clear-cut information being offered by their respective club managers in the press gatherings today and yesterday.

Fraser picked up a hamstring injury while on duty with the Scottish national team over the international break and wasn’t pictured in training as of Wednesday this week.

Eddie Howe said Fraser was a concern for Saturday, though had been working with the club’s medical team in a bid to recover. Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) meanwhile hasn’t trained with the Cherries all week and is a big doubt for the visit of Leicester City.

Walcott and Zaha, at least, have been training with their respective clubs, though Roy Hodgson and Marco Silva stopped short of declaring their players 100% fit ahead of the weekend.

Silva claimed Walcott was “in contention” to play, while Hodgson said on Thursday that he would make a late decision on whether Zaha and James Tomkins (£4.4m) would feature against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Everton’s injury crisis at least shows signs of abating, with Bernard (£5.9m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.4m) now available for selection – though Seamus Coleman (£5.4m) will be out for “one or two weeks”.

There was mixed news for three other England players injured before or during the international break, with Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) declared fit by Pep Guardiola earlier today but Dele Alli (£9.1m) and Adam Lallana (£6.9m) ruled out by their respective managers.

Mauricio Pochettino also confirmed that Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) would be out for “several weeks” with a thigh injury.

There was little to report concerning Chelsea’s likely starting XI against Cardiff City tomorrow, though Maurizio Sarri did suggest that Cesc Fabregas (£6.3m) may be fit enough for a place on the bench at Stamford Bridge.

Unai Emery’s press conference on Thursday was also thin on injury updates, though the Arsenal manager was quick to rubbish any rumours of a tiff with Mesut Ozil (£8.3m) – speculation that owners of Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.2m) might have hoped was true.

Arsenal are up against Newcastle United tomorrow, whose manager Rafael Benitez confirmed that Jonjo Shelvey (£5.4m) and Matt Ritchie (£5.9m) have recovered from their respective injuries to come back into contention.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.9m) and Stephen Ward (£4.9m) were declared fit to play against Wolves by Sean Dyche today, while his counterpart in the opposite dugout on Sunday – Nuno Espirito Santo – asserted that his returning international players were all “healthy”: good news for those worried about Raul Jimenez (£5.5m).

Jack Wilshere (£4.9m) was ruled out of West Ham’s trip to Everton with an ankle injury, meanwhile.

Neil Warnock was his usual loquacious self, effectively confirming that Danny Ward (a £4.5m-rated midfielder in FPL) and Bobby Reid (£5.4m) were his first-choice strike pairing for the time being.

Tom Cairney (£4.9m) remains out for Fulham, while Adama Diakhaby (£4.9m) is a minor doubt for Huddersfield. The Terriers’ goalkeeper Ben Hamer (£4.0m), however, appears to be back in contention to compete for Jonas Lossl‘s (£4.5m) starting spot.

Charlie Austin (£5.8m) and Shane Long (£4.9m) are minor doubts for Southampton, though Mark Hughes was more upbeat when discussing Danny Ings‘ (£5.6m) blister problems.

The Saints’ opponents on Monday night, Brighton, might have Florin Andone (£5.0m) – a potential threat to Glenn Murray (£6.5m) in the medium term – available for selection for the first time this season. There was no update provided by Chris Hughton about the knock picked up by Pascal Gross (£6.9m) in Gameweek 4, however.

There was little to report from Javi Gracia and Claude Puel’s pressers, though Caglar Soyuncu (£5.0m) is now fit and available for selection at centre-back for the Foxes.

Lots of people asking whether to play Robertson (tot) or Wan-Bissaka (hud). We can look at the expected values to get a clearer picture.

    ***Robertson:

He has clean sheet odds of 28% based on the hot topic, and xG of 0.02 and an xA of 0.43. He gets 4 points for a clean sheet, 6 points for a goal and 3 points for an assist, so his expected value is:

    EV = (0.28 x 4) + (0.02 x 6) + (0.43 x 3) = 2.53

    ***Wan-Bissaka:

He has clean sheet odds of 38% based on the hot topic, and xG of 0.00 and an xA of 0.19. He gets 4 points for a clean sheet, 6 points for a goal and 3 points for an assist, so his expected value is:

    EV = (0.38 x 4) + (0.00 x 6) + (0.19 x 3) = 2.09

This immediately suggests Robertson is the better option this week. However, there are some additional factors to consider:
    - Robertson is less likely to get yellow cards and more likely to get bonus points.
    - Wan-Bissaka is less likely to lose point for >2 goals conceded.
    - xG and xA numbers may be off given different opponents this week, favouring Wan-Bissaka.

There's not enough data to include this stuff into expected values at this point in the season, my above analysis is purely a rough guide and suggest Robbo comes out marginally on top, but it's very close.

tl;dr - too close to call, go with your gut 😉

Nice information as we just pondering that exact question. Still undecided but probably just to play the better player that plays for the better team even though have a lot tougher match.

Cheers. I was actually going to play WB until I saw that there isn't really a substantial difference in clean sheet probability but there likely is a big difference in bonus point and assist probability.

I will go for Wan Bissaka. Its wrong to go for xg and xa stats from previous games when Tottenham is a totally different level. Thats like saying Robertson got higher probabilty of CS because of previous matches.

        A) Robertson vs Spurs away
        CS odds: 24%
        Goal: Around 5% (18/1)
        Assist : (?)
        RMT tool points: 2.77p

        B) AWB vs Huddersfield away
        CS odds: 36%
        Goal: Around 5% (16/1)
        Assist : (?)
        RMT tool points: 3

I agree completely and that's why I made the point that 'xG and xA numbers may be off given different opponents this week'.

Regardless I still think Robbo's chance of an assist is higher. My personal opinion is that the Liverpool/Spurs game will be quite open, so Robbo's expected assist may continue to be strong in this fixture.

Ultimately your point is why I concluded with saying it is too close to call and both decisions are valid.

      Hi Pumpkin.

I like B though. Chelsea have a nice run of fixtures.

        Hi mate

I agree it feels sideways, especially if they get a pen but Wilson's stats and eye test are hard to ignore arnt they . Saying that I wonder how no Fraser effects things as he's created the most big chances ( mainly for Wilson)

Pedro is tempting, although it's probably only short term.

I was planning to save the FT but as I have 3 doubtful players in first 11 with only 1 playing sub, I decided to get rid 2 of them for 2 guaranteed starters. That would also allow me to do Ings > Mitro next week. I am not the fan of Maddison but I will try him for 2 weeks at least as a Richarlison placeholder. What do you think?

    Team atm:

    Patricio
    Alonso Mendy Robertson
    Salah Hazard Mkhi* Fraser*
    Kun Zaha* Ings

    Hamer* AWB Cairney* Peltier*
    1 FT, 0,6 ITB

Keep Zaha and just do the other transfer. Have you considered Lingard instead?

Surely you’ve just wildcarded if you have Robertson on the bench?

Have him since the start, not getting rid of him!

Why not Walcott out now, bernardo to Rich later?

Walcott (if fit) is a certain starter, Silva not as nailed on.

Anyone got stats on Dilva? Seeing him get mentioned a lot, but I've never been a fan and just wondering where the big appeal is

He’s their backup QB with KDB injured. Involved in most of city buildup and is on some set pieces

What's the deal with Højbjerg, is he starter from now on or risk? I've got Billing on my WC as midfield bencher

He’s 4.4 so it makes sense to get him on a WC

      Nothing else to it

I'm on WC and i got Ramsey in i don't know why but i feel he is getting a big haul in the upcoming fixture , keep him or switch to Moura ?

Good player but he'll be injured by GW10

I like him but having him upsets the balance of my side

It’s either two approx 6.5 or Ramsey and someone a bit meh

Do you like this non-template WC team:

    Ederson (Hamer)
    Alonso Mendy Robertson Bellerin (AWB)
Salah Hazard Pogba DSilva (bench fodder)
    Wilson Mitrovic (Ings)

Please don’t capture h8m. The rest of us need him free to play.

Mates, what seems stronger for next GWs:

    A) Holebas and Moura
    B) Bellerin and Maddison

Rest of defence: Alonso; Robertson; Mendy; Bissaka
Rest of mids: Mane; Hazard; Pedro; D. Silva

    Thanks a lot
