Bournemouth’s FPL options in midfield and attack: an analysis

Sitting in sixth position and ahead even of the hipsters’ favourites, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bournemouth have been a welcome success story in Fantasy Premier League this season.

Just three top-flight teams have scored more goals than the Cherries (16), while only Manchester City (28) have created more big chances than Eddie Howe’s side (27) in the opening eight Gameweeks.

Like Wolves, all of their FPL assets are priced up in the budget-to-mid-price bracket, with not a single Bournemouth player currently costing more than £6.4m.

Their players are offering tremendous value for money: Ryan Fraser‘s (£6.0m) average of 8.0 FPL points per million (PPM) spent is the best among midfielders, while Callum Wilson (£6.4m) and Joshua King‘s (£6.4m) PPMs of 7.8 and 6.7 are the highest among FPL forwards.

No budget midfielder available for £5.0m or less has scored more points than David Brooks (£5.0m) this season, meanwhile.

It should be said, of course, that the Cherries have enjoyed a somewhat favourable start to the season. Howe’s troops have only met Chelsea of the “big six” sides and sterner tests await from Gameweek 11 onwards, when they face Manchester United (twice), Arsenal (h), Manchester City (a), Liverpool (h), Wolves (a) and Spurs (a) in the space of ten matches.

Doubling up on Bournemouth assets is probably a no-go for this run of fixtures, then, but given the value the Cherries are offering in FPL, there might be room for one of their attack-minded assets in our squads even during this tricky spell.

With that in mind, we have used this latest members’ piece to explore the Cherries’ four current options in midfield and attack. It should be noted, of course, that doubts remain over Fraser’s fitness given his withdrawal from the Scotland squad during this international break – although the last time that happened, the winger delivered an 18-point haul the very next Gameweek.

    A) or B) guys , which would you go for? Sterling at 5.4% is madness.

    a) Mane and Aguero
    b) Sterling and Firmino

      A highly owned
      B differentials

      Both good options
Depends on your situation, focusing on mini-league or OR? good rank or bad?
      If you're chasing, then B.

1768 OR, but maybe i still go be B anyway, but i own Aguero atm, just wondering who to go Salah to if injured, Sterling or Mane.

Aguero is that much better than Sterling? there is nothing between Firmino and Mane.

Captain option is something I'd be taking into consideration. Aguero ability to hatrick would surpass Sterlings.

    2fts, 0.2m itb

    Patricio
    Alonso • Doherty • TAA
    Hazard • Richarlison • Fraser
    Kun • Kane • Mitro

    Hart • Trippier • WanBissaka • Hojbjerg

    If Salah is fit:
Kane + Maddison --> Salah + Wilson (Wilson to Arnie in gw11)

    If Salah isn't fit:
Just Trippier --> Robertson and save the other ft.

    Thoughts?

I don't seem him being saved, more likely he goes off at 60, but i think he could score a few by then so not that big of a deal imo. But Laca still a good pick with his form and fixture so I can see how hard it would be too pick between them.

Really hope Sane and Dilva start v Burnley, triple City feels good v that Burnely defence. Going to save FT with Salah v Cardiff in mind. Roll on GW9:

    Patricio (Ryan)
    Bennett, Alonso, Robbo (PVA, WB)
    Fraser, Hazard, Dilva, Sane (Knockaert)
    Wilson, Kun, Mitrovic

sane and dilva seems a bit of a disaster to me. would be trying to fix problems you actually have instead of saving up transfers to get in a crocked, formless premium player

Haha, well nothing like a positive response from a fellow member of the community to bolster optimism.

I feel quite good about my team this week. Sane has provided attacking returns in all the games he's started since I got him in although I admit he is a big concern now since Mendy is back.

Not sure I would class Dilva as a disaster !! I'm curious about your thought process there, he is one of the leagues most creative players and patience is key when awaiting returns from him, albeit his time in my team is reaching an end to enable Salah if fit.

I have gone without Salah for much of the season but form often follows fixtures and his underlying stats remain strong. I'm happy to bring him in and hedge my bets on returns over the next few weeks.

The only 'problem' I see in my side currently is PVA, he's also going very soon but can warm my bench this week.

I just think you have two players there who conceivably could be benched/play limited minutes in the same match. £17.7m is a huge amount to spend on a pairing like that. I would much prefer to own a combination of Sterling/Mane/Madison/Richarlison

Yes I see no reason for Dilva not to play although there is the champs league a couple of days after. I do wonder if Pep will play Sane v Burnley and save Mendy for the champ league (probably just wishful thinking). That said, 15 mins of Sane can bring attacking returns, would be a nice farewell gift.

Anything one would change in this team
    Ryan
    Robbo AWB Trippier
    Salah(c) Richy Hazard Fraser
    King Kane Mitrovic
    Button Cedric Lowton Stephens
    1ft 0.6itb
Looking to try move Lowton out. Thinking a double up on robbo but is that too risky with both being rotation risks and is Doherty a better option instead

‘Spending too much in defence’, seems to get highlighted as an issue with many people. Is it actually a problem?

Players like Mendy, Alonso, Doherty, Robertson, Trent etc surely can’t be classified as traditional defenders. They have the heat maps of a midfielder.

Yep , however would you Cpt any of them ? probably not.
Overloading in defence will leave you short of good Cpt options. In certain weeks 4 at the back will be great but I prefer to have 3 premium Cpt options, so not for me

I completely disagree, having those options allows 4 at back and more money spent on your playing mids. You have to have one non playing mid or striker but you can still have three big hitters to rotate captaincy with.

Spending big on defence always used to be the hallmark of a poor FPL player but this is no longer the case with the shift in the fullback role to being more about attack than defence.

It might just be this year though. Alonso for example is proving that even barren stretches can be lived with when the clean sheets are ticking over. Robbo is part of the meanest defence in the league and a relatively high scoring team and Mendy appears - given he retains a place in the XI - a phenomenon. Alonso in for week 2 and those 3 have been set and forget since. Can't rule out changes, but currently don't see any reason

I need to look at the rotation again, however I don't think Wolves and Brighton rotate well long term. Consider West Ham defender to rotate with Doherty.

How much would that then leave you for your Mid? If you got Maddison instead of Ozil, that would leave you with change to upgrade King to Arnie for when their respective fixtures switch.

In the All or Nothing documentary, a few players went out drinking after they'd officially won the league, but before the season was over. It didn't look like anyone was bothered about it.

It's reasonable to assume that Pep knows that he can't regulate every moment of his players' lives.

Worried about what? It’s international break and he hasn’t been selected. He’s got the week off to do whatever he wants. Mendy was already out of the match injured, which is why he was pictured in the club the night before a game.

Aguero is always partying. He is allowed to do things on his days off, but if he turns up late or injured then he is screwed. He has a week to make sure neither of those things happen.

Thinking about downgrading Kane to afford other transfers, if Salah is alright. Agüero an obvious move, but is Lacazette just as good an option as he's less likely to be pulled off at 60?
