Meet the Manager #9 – Marc Rubinstein

Fantasy Premier League managers can learn a lot from the financial sector, according to our latest Meet the Manager guest Marc Rubinstein.

With three top 5,000 finishes in his FPL career, he has a strong track record of success. This is something he attributes in part to his 20 years of experience in the financial sector, including a stint as a partner for one of Europe’s largest hedge fund firms.

In our chat, Marc looks at how key financial services issues around diversification, risk management and data analysis can be applied to Fantasy Football management.

He reveals how Richarlison will help him not to lose, but not necessarily win, and why Newcastle-era Andy Carroll may well have been one of the greatest FPL investments of all time.

The battle between luck and skill is also explored and why the proliferation of expert managers and information is making it harder each year to achieve the number one spot. This theme is explored further via this Twitter thread from Marc.

But his approach is not based purely on analysis, theory and data. Marc also reveals how his emotional ties with Liverpool has a direct impact on each of his campaigns.

      With no further information, I would just do Mendy, Wilson -> Laporte, Jimenez. How badly do you want Martial?

                Yeh the only reason I was wanting to do the Hojbjerg > Kenedy was so that I didn't have to field Success v Liverpool or AWB against Manchester United.

    The Martial v Richarlison argument is hard case. When Martial is mentioned everyone on here says he's over-performing. When Richarlison is mentioned everyone on here says buy when he is over-performing as well but you guys don't mention that. Plus the fact that Martial has better fixtures than Everton.

      It really is a tough call. But what swayed me towards Rich over Martial are: the excellent post by THEFANTASYFREAK (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/19283984), the price difference, the captaincy polls, and the Mou factor.

            form - he is on form for sure, not the team though, how long can he carry the team?

            fixtures - favourable fixtures

            rotation risk - in the first 7 gameweeks, he managed to play more than 60mins once, 3 of those games he managed 0mins. you cant say he is nailed

            goal and assist potential - 6 goals and 1 assist in last 5 games, on paper this looks amazing, but his goal conversion rate of 44% is not sustainable like many on here have said

            also carrying an injury, not sure if an international injury or not.

            and mourinho likes to turn against players, it was not long ago martial looked certain last summer

      I have a sneaky suspicion thought that Mané might be on the scoresheet this weekend as he plays better away from Anfield strangely enough. But you never know. It can happen with any transfer that the player you bring in does zilch and the player you take out gets big points.
