Meet the Manager #10 – Mark McGettigan (aka FPL General)

With top 500 finishes in three of his last four seasons Mark McGettigan, aka FPL  General, is a more than worthy interviewee for our Meet the Manager series.

Mark explains what it takes to make the leap from being a good Fantasy Premier League manager to one who is challenging for the top places in the competition.

As well as patience and an aversion to hits, he believes that bravery in the transfer market and avoiding the crowd are important lessons to a successful ascent up the rankings.

He also reveals why underlying statistics are only one part of his Fantasy management jigsaw, which is dominated by the good old-fashioned eye-test.

The FPL website’s own Watchlist tool is another vital weapon in Mark’s Fantasy management armoury. He discusses why this often overlooked function has been so important to helping him better organise his thoughts regarding transfers.

However, with a current rank just outside the top 400,000, he faces one of his toughest tasks yet in 2018/19.

As well as sharing his strategies for success he also analyses where it has gone wrong this season and how he plans to turn it around.

Tapping into Manchester City’s potent midfield and ending his reliance on mediocre captains look key as he aims to once again finish strongly.

The chat with Mark is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

Trouble also is Pep-rotation. With so many fixtures won't even Sterling become a victim?

A lot of very good options at the 8.5-9.5 bracket now (Sane, Dilva, Laca, Spurs mids).

What is the optimum way of fitting these in alongside premiums? Whereas previously the template was to have 3 'premium' players, should we now be looking to fit in 4 or even 5 including these players at the lower price bracket?

And what does that mean for the premium defenders? Is it time to shift funds forward in the anticipation of greater value in midfield and up front?

    1. The Count of Monte Cristo
      • 11 Years

Several weeks back, Alonso/Robbo/Mendy back lines were netting you 15-18 points a week. Nowhere near as essential now.

      Humble brag alert.

I put my good start to the season down to getting RAM in week 2.

I put my good recent form downgrading RAM as soon as Mendy got crooked.

      1. Goonsquad245
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 6 months ago

Have you downgraded all of them?

I went for Laporte as a Mendy replacement - the funds from downgrading would sure come in handy now!

Doing the latter on my WC. Double Liverpool defense can be done quite cheaply and looks great value.

Sterling is the only one that looks "essential". Auba and Kane very good, Lacazette if funds are needed. Prefer Sane in the 8.5-9.5 bracket. 5 is tricky imo, would like some funds in defense still.

      1. Goonsquad245
        • 8 Years

Agree. I am after Kane, Sterling, Sane, and Laca I think. Can't quite stretch to Auba as would rather have Sane, but may switch from Kane if he fails over the next 1 or 2....

Jealous. I'd go for Hazard personally. Wolves not looking great at the back and can never be sure Sterling / Sane will play enough minutes. Aubameyang in form though, but Arsenal historically haven't done great at OT lately

Camarasa I guess, or maybe Cairney since he seems to start when he's fit and looks a bit more attacking under Ranieri.
