Clues to Manchester City’s Gameweek 18 line-up in League Cup win

Pep Guardiola threw the Fantasy Premier League community some clues to his Gameweek 18 team selection in Manchester City’s League Cup win at Leicester.

The defending champions made a string of changes as they eliminated the Foxes in a penalty shoot-out.

We’ve got all the talking points in this Scout Notes article.

Leicester City 1-1 Manchester City (1-3 on penalties)

Goals: Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) | Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m)

Assists: Wilfried Ndidi (£4.9m) | Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m)

Leroy Sané (£9.7m) looks in line to start for Manchester City when they host Crystal Palace in Gameweek 18. The German international was not even in the matchday squad on Tuesday night as the Citizens progressed in the League Cup. That will massive boost his credentials as a captain candidate given his remarkable consistency this season. He has blanked in just one start this season, scoring 10 points in his most recent Etihad Stadium.

There might be slightly mild concern for options such as Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) who both played their part at the King Power Stadium. The Argentinian striker started the match but was replaced in the 75th minute by Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m), suggesting that Pep Guardiola was at least trying to manage his minutes.

Meanwhile, Sterling owners would have been in high spirits when they saw that he was benched against Leicester but he did enter the fray in the 66th minute, coming on for Brahim Diaz (£4.7m). The fact that he featured only in the last 24 minutes against Everton should mean that he is sufficiently rested to start on Saturday. The fact that his main competitor for the right-wing position Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) played the whole 90 minutes on Tuesday, also plays into Sterling’s hands too. He will have a point to prove in Gameweek 18 too as he missed his penalty in the shootout.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) reminded us all of the quality he has to offer as he scored Manchester City’s only goal of the tie. It was a spectacular effort which will have some Fantasy managers eyeing him up for inclusion as soon as he looks to be returning to the first-team situation.

“I’ve been out, so long so to play 70 minutes is a really good sign for me personally. I feel a little bit stiff but I’m happy to contribute again.” – Kevin de Bruyne

John Stones (£5.3m) returned from his injury doubts to play in central midfield. That’s not the first time he has fulfilled that role in a cup match, but it may be some time before we see him do it in the Premier League. Fernandinho (£5.4m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) were two more players absent from the matchday squad while Ilkay Gündogan (£5.4m) was involved only as a substitute against Leicester.

Aymeric Laporte (£6.1m) was not involved at all while Fabian Delph (£5.3m) was an unused substitute. However, Kyle Walker (£6.5m) played the full 90 minutes, after completing a 90-minute outing against Everton, so it will be interesting to see if he holds onto the right-back berth on Saturday. Vincent Kompany‘s (£5.2m) absence was due to an injury, according to Guardiola.

Jamie Vardy (£8.8m) was absent for Leicester City with Claude Puel keen to not to aggravate an injury. The Foxes manager is hoping to have him fit in time for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea though.

“I hope we can have him on Saturday. He wasn’t fit enough for today. He has trained once and then played against Palace in the Premier League for 90 minutes. It was important to keep him fresh. We have to be careful to avoid another injury. I hope he can play against Chelsea on Saturday.” – Claude Puel

There were plenty of changes made for Leicester although first-team regulars Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Demarai Gray (£5.4m) both played the full 90 minutes.

Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) and James Maddison (£6.8m) featured as substitutes but should be fresh enough to remain in the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge.

Leicester City XI (4-5-1): Ward; Fuchs, Maguire, Söyüncü, Simpson; Gray, Ndidi, Iborra (Albrighton 61′), Choudhury, Ghezzal (Maddison 53′); Iheanacho (Pereira 81′).

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Murić; Zinchenko, Otamendi, Garcia, Walker; Foden, Stones, De Bruyne (Gündogan 71′); Diaz (Sterling 66′), Aguero (Jesus 76′), Mahrez.

Because you're looking at it through rose tinted glasses.

I'd be more worried about dead teams filled with Cardiff players.

Spurs struggled also against easy teams at home, like Cardiff earlier on. Burnley could get destroyed if there’s an early goal.

I’m flipping the same coin, let me know your final decision. I don’t trust hazard after niggles, never looks the same player and as a captain I fear he could get subbed a little early if the game is safe as a precaution.

Easy with hindsight but why would anyone get Auba?
No doubting his quality but a winger at that price?
Was a perfect rotation with Kane but with Laca also.

1 week only punt (4.5m to play with)

    C: Schindler (SOU)

    De Gea time?

The forgotten man. We loved owning him for most parts of last season but seem to have forgotten him amidst the mess that Man United have been this season.

Despite being a Manchester City fan, I've got to admit that De Gea remains the best goalkeeper in the league which bodes extremely well with Mourinho's timely sack and their long stretch of green fixtures. To me, the key reason of United's underperformance this season has been the fact that Mourinho, not so surprisingly lost the dressing room. This is the same bunch that finished second in the league last season and statistically, were the best defensive unit in the league alongside their neighbours.

Are you looking at bringing in any United assets immediately? If yes, who? Or you would prefer sitting on the fence and see how it unfolds under Solskjaer?

I'm personally interested in bringing in David De Gea and Martial. De Gea, because he's the most assured starter in that backline and Martial, because he's a top quality attacker who is available for peanuts right now.

Just baffling. You're assuming that suddenly all these players that have been terrible will instantly die for OGS and play as hard as they can?

He's clearly not a top manager and is a safety 'nostalgia' pick whereby if he does well it's a dream come true but is more likely a damage limitation and PR stunt as the Man U fans would never ever turn on him.

Regarding United and Solskjaer. I remember listening to a podcast he featured on about a year ago, and on that podcast he said one of his favorite United players are Rashford. The sensible thing to do would be to wait and see how United line- up, but I will probably transfer in Rashford before the weekend, based on Solksjaers praise of him and his form lately.

Solskjaer is a club legend and knows what the club is about. The fact that Rashford is local lad and product of the academy combined with his playstyle, which is factors that hasn't changed and reasons for Solksjaer liking him, I highly doubt that his view has changed.

Struggling to decide who to keep out of Kane or Aubamayang. Definitely getting rid of one so I can get Haz or Sane but choosing which one is a real challenge. Kane has the fixtures while Obama has much better underlying stats and is, of course, cheaper. What do y'all think?

    Alisson, Bettinelli

Let’s just say for argument’s sake, United start to look good. The horses begin to run free again, so to speak. Who are we looking at realistically? I don’t think I would trust any defenders until I started seeing some clean sheets, but I can kind of see the logic in punting on Rashford or Martial or both depending on game time. Lukaku might even become viable again, no?

Pogba has been living on the goals imminent table for two seasons now maybe this will get him actually scoring

Martial only one I would be interested in I think, BUT I read Solskjaer is keen on rotating his offensive players? It’s not like Martial doesnt face competition for his best position with Rashford and Sanchez...

If Pogba looks like a totally different player I might consider him as well but I think that’s a big if.

      Will certainly not double up.

Lukaku has a good track record against smaller clubs. If United start to play attacking football and put a lot of crosses in, then maybe Lukaku will become a good option. Will have to see how United will play and the role lukaku will get

Some clues on how solskjaer Manutd could look

Solskjaer likes a 4-2-3-1 formation with full-backs bombing forward. Good news for Luke Shaw, perhaps, after his troubles under Mourinho.
He wants ball players further forward. Good news for Juan Mata, who always appeared on the periphery with Mourinho.
Somehow, under Solskjaer, you can't see a static, non-creative midfield of Nemanja Matic, Marouane Fellani and Ander Herrera - which was part of the Mourinho problem.
He wants artists on the ball who, are capable of getting between the lines. Music to the ears of Mata and Jesse Lingard, while Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are also Solskjaer types of players.
Solskjaer will let United's footballers express themselves. Adventurous, swashbuckling. Which is something Mourinho spectacularly failed to do.

I'm still unsure on what my next move shoudl be..

Thinking about doing Bennett -> Digne but not sure if it's worth the money. Saving something for a rainyday might be better.. Also getting Digne would give me a bench headache every gameweek.

    Get Digne or not?
