Clues to Manchester City’s Gameweek 18 line-up in League Cup win

Pep Guardiola threw the Fantasy Premier League community some clues to his Gameweek 18 team selection in Manchester City’s League Cup win at Leicester.

The defending champions made a string of changes as they eliminated the Foxes in a penalty shoot-out.

We’ve got all the talking points in this Scout Notes article.

Leicester City 1-1 Manchester City (1-3 on penalties)

Goals: Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) | Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m)

Assists: Wilfried Ndidi (£4.9m) | Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m)

Leroy Sané (£9.7m) looks in line to start for Manchester City when they host Crystal Palace in Gameweek 18. The German international was not even in the matchday squad on Tuesday night as the Citizens progressed in the League Cup. That will massive boost his credentials as a captain candidate given his remarkable consistency this season. He has blanked in just one start this season, scoring 10 points in his most recent Etihad Stadium.

There might be slightly mild concern for options such as Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) who both played their part at the King Power Stadium. The Argentinian striker started the match but was replaced in the 75th minute by Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m), suggesting that Pep Guardiola was at least trying to manage his minutes.

Meanwhile, Sterling owners would have been in high spirits when they saw that he was benched against Leicester but he did enter the fray in the 66th minute, coming on for Brahim Diaz (£4.7m). The fact that he featured only in the last 24 minutes against Everton should mean that he is sufficiently rested to start on Saturday. The fact that his main competitor for the right-wing position Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) played the whole 90 minutes on Tuesday, also plays into Sterling’s hands too. He will have a point to prove in Gameweek 18 too as he missed his penalty in the shootout.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) reminded us all of the quality he has to offer as he scored Manchester City’s only goal of the tie. It was a spectacular effort which will have some Fantasy managers eyeing him up for inclusion as soon as he looks to be returning to the first-team situation.

“I’ve been out, so long so to play 70 minutes is a really good sign for me personally. I feel a little bit stiff but I’m happy to contribute again.” – Kevin de Bruyne

John Stones (£5.3m) returned from his injury doubts to play in central midfield. That’s not the first time he has fulfilled that role in a cup match, but it may be some time before we see him do it in the Premier League. Fernandinho (£5.4m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) were two more players absent from the matchday squad while Ilkay Gündogan (£5.4m) was involved only as a substitute against Leicester.

Aymeric Laporte (£6.1m) was not involved at all while Fabian Delph (£5.3m) was an unused substitute. However, Kyle Walker (£6.5m) played the full 90 minutes, after completing a 90-minute outing against Everton, so it will be interesting to see if he holds onto the right-back berth on Saturday. Vincent Kompany‘s (£5.2m) absence was due to an injury, according to Guardiola.

Jamie Vardy (£8.8m) was absent for Leicester City with Claude Puel keen to not to aggravate an injury. The Foxes manager is hoping to have him fit in time for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea though.

“I hope we can have him on Saturday. He wasn’t fit enough for today. He has trained once and then played against Palace in the Premier League for 90 minutes. It was important to keep him fresh. We have to be careful to avoid another injury. I hope he can play against Chelsea on Saturday.” – Claude Puel

There were plenty of changes made for Leicester although first-team regulars Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Demarai Gray (£5.4m) both played the full 90 minutes.

Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) and James Maddison (£6.8m) featured as substitutes but should be fresh enough to remain in the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge.

Leicester City XI (4-5-1): Ward; Fuchs, Maguire, Söyüncü, Simpson; Gray, Ndidi, Iborra (Albrighton 61′), Choudhury, Ghezzal (Maddison 53′); Iheanacho (Pereira 81′).

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Murić; Zinchenko, Otamendi, Garcia, Walker; Foden, Stones, De Bruyne (Gündogan 71′); Diaz (Sterling 66′), Aguero (Jesus 76′), Mahrez.

Anyone free hitting this weekend? If you’re not free hitting no need to comment saying it’s a waste or you’re saving it for the blank GW

Reason I ask is I have no Man City or Arsenal players and now 4 flagged players

Team is linked if that’s not 2 much hassle for you. 1 FT. 0.5 itb. A lot of my players playing against each other too plus the flags and no city and arsenal has got me thinking

You will be absolutely fine with that squad. Maybe bring in a city attacker for Salah if you are desperate but I am sure you'll get an XI out of that.

Free hit really is the most valuable chip for that Blank Gameweek as it save you having to bring in/hold on to dross players from teams you might not otherwise want playing that week.

I'd just take a -4 or possibly even a -8 to solve that - mainly focus on Man City mids I think. Tough to know without seeing your team & who the flags are on.

Preserves FH for a more optimum time (sorry I know you asked not to mention that but it's part of it!)

Flags on Wilson, Kane, Bellerin and Hazard (although we know Haz will play). A FH team with Sterling, Sane, Haz and Aubameyang could do amazing

Issue with Arsenal is that it's basically Auba or nothing, right? Everyone else too much of a rotation risk & I don't trust their defence whatsoever.

Hazard & Kane should play this weekend IMO - and Wilson's a bit of a mystery. Not sure why he's flagged tbh.

All I would look at is either Salah to Sterling/Sane (if you're desperate for a City player), or solving the Bellerin issue. Personally would downgrade him to a 4.5 max.

Your situation is no different to most on here each game week, 2 of your flags will start, one may start, one probably won’t start.

Use your bench or take a hit if you want City players ... FH is not ‘needed’ to deal with your issues

If you are actually seriously considering a FH, I would suggest it is because you ‘desire to’ rather than ‘need to’ 😉

Ultimately it is your call and you may get 100 points with it.

        Good luck 🙂

Yes..some bad fixtures for my team this week ... been thinking about all week... even though i would’ve liked to save it for blank week... im already 50 points behind from first place after leading all year... my mn rival got 130 few weeks ago...so its boom or bust for me...

I've considered it pal but think I'll hold onto freehit until a blank gw

I used it early last year, and really felt it was the wrong decision when bgw's came along

      currently on this team

      fab
      robertson - *bellerin* - doherty
      sterling(c) - sane - son - anderson - fraser
      kane - chicharito

      hamer - jiminez - pereira - awb

my worry is no liv attackers, and no chelsea assets

I read an article earlier which said he's generally played a fluid 4-2-3-1 system at Molde with a lot of pressing, high up the pitch. The writer seemed to think Lingard, who Solskjaer previously worked with when coaching the reserves, could thrive.

    Rash, Jimenez, Chicha/Wilson

Not sure if affordable but thoughts?

Like it, considering something similar. Not on WC myself but Kane, Murphy -> Rash, Sterling is what I am potentially looking at this weekend. Would then have the same sort of team. There is value in the forward positions and lot's of high performing mids so a move to a stronger mid looks good. Only difference is that I would keep Richarldson and not have Alli, this would allow you to have Sterling if you wanted. Personally the choice between Sterling, Haz, Salah and Sane is the most difficult.

Feel I prefer Sane over sterling and I dont know why... guess because he's on freekicks and corners every now and then. And yh id most likely bring rich in for nice fixtures so maybe punt on a nice fixture this weeek and make sure i have enough to get Rich in the week after

My actual team in FPL is:

    Fabianski
    VVD - LaPorte - Alonso -
Sanè - Salah (VC) - Fraser - Richarlison
    Chicharito - Aubameyang (C) - Jimenez

Hennesey -Wan Bissaka - Doherty -Billing

    Bank: 2.0
    FT: 1

For next GWs, make sense cut Jimenez and replace him with Ing, rashford, or other?
    Keep Auba or cut?

My only worry would be that it maybe lacks a bit of flexibility - if Kane starts firing it will mean a minimum of 2 transfers to bring him in, and at this time of year that will probably mean a hit as there will be injuries and suspensions to deal with.

At the same time, it does look like a cracking squad and fair play for thinking outside of the box.

I hear you. I am not in love with forward big hitters and am willing to take the risk. 1 of Haz/Sterling/Sane and even Anderson are good enough to captain.
Not what I normally do but points per million are so much higher with defenders than in previous years.

He was hailed as one of the best in Europe.
Also, look at the choices. It is a gamble though but not a serious one.

I think he'll start. If they're going to be playing an attacking system with pressing high up the pitch, they'll need an aggressive centre back and Bailly fits the bill.

defence is shocking this week - pereira will likely come in for bellerin but already on -4

should I hold taking any more hits?

    fab
    robertson - *bellerin* - doherty
    sterling(c) - sane - anderson - son - fraser
    kane - chicharito

    hamer - jiminez - pereira - awb

Save. It's going to be a tough week for a lot of defenses unless you have city/che defenders.

I have Alonso - Laporte - TAA - AWB - Bennett. Praying for an unlikely start for TAA. I'm probably going to have a one pointer from AWB/Bennett this week.

I somehow have Mahrez and need to make a transfer or 2. I'm happy with the rest of my team really but WWUD:

    1) Mahrez ---> Sane
    2) Kane and Mahrez ---> Hazard and Aguero

Will Aguero have a big role in the next couple of matches?

          I think so.
He gets heading opportunities with crosses on set pieces.
Although i won't transfer him now or kiko.
Might look at Lowe at that price point.
Hudds is good defense recently & he is on set piece's

Thank you. I meant in for kiko as I have an AA issue and 2 West Ham attackers who play Watford so do not want kiko. I’ll look at Lowe but coming off 59th min is a bit of a downer for me.
