The changes to bonus points in Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season

Bonus points will be allocated slightly differently in Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season, which could change the way managers set up their teams.

These additional avenues for points are still derived from passing, tackles, saves and shots but the parameters in securing them have been tweaked.

In this article, we assess where the changes are and what implications they will have in 2019/20.

Passing bonus points

Passing bonus is often something that Manchester City defenders enjoy in Sky Sports Fantasy Football

In possession-based teams such as Manchester City, defenders and holding midfielders often enjoy a lot of the ball and rack up a hefty amount of passes, earning valuable bonus points throughout a campaign.

These remain the same coming into 2019/20 and will be scored as follows:

  • Passing tier one: 60 passes – count for last season: 351
  • Passing tier two: 70 passes – count for last season: 484

Tackle bonus points – Tier two

Aaron Wan-Bissaka could benefit from tweaks to the tackle bonus in 2019/20

This season, tackles are becoming more important, with tier two bonus points being reduced from five to four, making the margin only one from tier one to two.

An impressive 644 tier one bonus points were collected by players in 2018/19, with the possibility of reaching tier two now increasing with this new rule change.

New Manchester United signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka could do well in this department, having made 129 tackles for Crystal Palace last year, the most out of any defender.

As you can see from the data below, if the 2018/19 campaign was scored in the same way as the new season, a much higher number of defensive players would have received tier two tackle bonus.

2019/20

  • Tackles tier one: Three tackles – count for last season: 644
  • Tackles tier two: Four tackles – count for last season: 223

2018/19

  • Tackles tier two: Five tackles – count for last season: 66

Save bonus points

Save points are a big part of Fabianski’s appeal

When selecting a goalkeeper for your team, there is no doubt that you have to take their clean sheet rate into account, as that can bring in the most points, but that is not their only way to score.

Conceding goals may end up costing you points so but save points can often offset these deductions.

This is another department where the parameters have been shifted, increasing the potential for goalkeepers to score bonus points for saves.

2019/20

  • Saves tier one: Three saves – count for last season: 238
  • Saves tier two: Five saves -count for last season: 118

2018/19

  • Saves tier one: Five saves – count for last season: 118
  • Saves tier two: Seven saves – count for last season: 43

Shot bonus points

Mohamed Salah could enjoy more points this season as a result of tweaks to shots on target bonus

This is perhaps one of the most important sections to receive a tweak, which should allow premium forwards to compete with their expensive counterparts in defence.

To reach tier one shots on target bonus, players now only need to record two accurate goal attempts per game.

Additionals were recorded from shots on only 157 occasions last season but under the new decreased threshold for this year, 667 bonus points from both tiers would have been earned.

Strikers pose the greatest threat of scoring and assisting, as well as earning Sky Sports Man of the Match awards, but lowering the bonus points here adds an extra dimension.

It now means that researching shots on target can add further power to picking the best forward players.

2019/20

  • Shots tier one: Two shots on target – count for last season: 515
  • Shots tier two: Three shots on target – count for last season: 152

2018/19

  • Shots tier one: Three shots on target – count for last season: 152
  • Shots tier two: Five shots on target – count for last season: Five

Man of the Match

While the game-makers at Sky Sports Fantasy Football have increased the chances that players will score bonus points, the Man of the Match award has been somewhat nerfed.

In previous years, options deemed the stand-out performer in their fixture were handed a five-point bonus but in 2019/20 it will be just three.

Often, players who score one of the key goals or two and above in a single game end up being the Man of the Match.

By restricting the points haul to three, there will be less of a gap that can be extended by having particular players.

Don’t underestimate the point-pulling power of bonus points and the impact that it can have on your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team.

They may not have changed dramatically, but that having players in your side that pick them up throughout the season may be just what you need to propel you to the top.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football 2019/20 is bigger and better than ever. Get your team in early and read the latest news and features as you make your selection leading up to Friday, August 9.

    What do you think?

    Ederson - (Button)
    TAA - VVD - LaPorte - Ake - (Kelly)
Salah - Sterling - Zaha - Fraser - (Oriol Romeu)
    King - Jota - (Greenwood)

Any feedback on this much appreciated.

Looks good - horrible bench but hopefully you want need it that much. To medium forwards makes it a bit inflexible if you would want a heavy hitter up front

    Ederson
    TAA VVD Taylor Guilbert
    Salah Sterling KDB McGinn
    Vardy Wesley

    Button Lundstram Dendoncker Greenwood

That's the best I can do with all the cask put into the starting 11.

    Any good?

I could upgrade Lundstram to say, Dunk for rotation amongst the 4.5s, but it would mean dropping McGinn down to Jorginho, which I'm not sure is worth it.

Think I have finally found it.. Very happy with this team

    Lloris
    TAA - VVD - Walker - Digne
    Salah - Barkley - Siggy - Fraser
    Kane - King

    Woodman - Rico - Dendoncker - Greenwood

    0.5 ITB for flexibility

Midfield a bit light, Bark, Siggi, Fraser could all blank easily in a week and you often rely on a Sterling/Salah/Mane type to dig you out and I would always want at least 2 of my 5 to be top scorers in the game

  7. Maguire Van Dijk

Doesn't feel right having Salah in my team.

He did poorly at AFCON, has barely played pre-season and when he has, he's looked average.

There's no doubt he'll come into form eventually. I know the stats justify having him.

    Here's my team with Salah:

    Ederson
    TAA, Van Dijk, Digne, Walker
    Sterling, Salah, Fraser, Robinson
    Wilson, Wesley

    Button, Dendoncker, Greenwood

    Without:

    Henderson
    TAA, Robertson, Digne, Walker
    Sterling, KDB, Tielemens, Robinson
    Kane, Wilson

    Button, Dendoncker, Greenwood

Without leaves me with ideal flexibility: KDB is an easy transfer to Son and Kane can be replaced by an emerging forward.

TL;DR: 9.5 for De Bruyne is a steal. Both him and Kane (if they can stay fit) will rack up more points than Salah and a ~8.0 forward.

    Thoughts?

        • 7 Years
        4 years, 10 months ago

Robertson and TAA can still get lots of points in those fixtures.

Rather than looking at what I have to lose from not having Salah, I'm looking at what I'm gaining.

De Bruyne and Kane isn't bad!

Seen those reports. If you've watched City's preseason games, KDB is finding himself in and around the box.

He's the heart of the City team when fit irrespective of where he plays.

Has goals, assists and great on set pieces.

Kane scored 5.7 ppg last season. Wilson at 8 scored 5.6 ppg. Salah scored 6.8 ppg and is also on penalties now (unless Milner plays). Lets be generous and give KDB 5.9 ppg. If history repeats then I don't think the two are close especially considering captaincy.

      1. Maguire Van Dijk
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 10 months ago

I'm not sure using Kane or KDB's PPG from last season is the fairest indicator to how they will perform this season. But I hear what you're saying.

It's the additional 3m and upgrading your often 6.5 forward/other players that I'm considering.

Unfortunately I think this proves that the template is the template for a reason

For me there are way too many risks for a GW1 starting team (Martial, Barkley, Chilwell, even KWP)

If you want to go the Sterling, Auba, Kane route I would try and go as template as you can with the rest (a LEI mid, an EVE def etc)

I would go Moura, probably eat my hat but think Fraser is over priced.

        Cheers
I am tempted by Moura as a short-term pick to cover Spurs' opening fixture(s) until Son is back.
Fraser is very decent though, especially with Wilson.

Looks good. Almost the same as mine. I have Siggy for Fraser as I don't want Bournemouth double up, and Zinc for Walker.

I did have Siggy and Zinch also but I'm tempted by Moura to cover Spurs opening fixture and so had cash to upgrade Zinch

Do you think my tactic will work?

With some big hitters and some players who just fill the starting lineup...

    Heaton (Button)
Van Dijk Dunk Zouma Robertson Lundstram
    Salah Sterling Fraser (Dendocker Hayden)
    Kane Wilson (Greenwood)

This new chap Liverpool have signed Harvey Elliot. What a disgusting little piece of crap he is. Won't get very far with that attitude at a top club.

Ive considered him plenty of times but always end up concluding that for 5m you'd want someone with less risk.

Is anyone considering Matip/Gomez instead of van Dijk (using the community shield to assess who is the preferred CB)? That 1m saved goes a really long way!

One of Matip/Gomez will emerge themselves as a value pick if Liverpool look good defensively.

Not sure about starting the season with one of them. Neither are nailed.

Wilson looks like he's adding assists to his game. I have him currently in my draft squad.

Feel you can get a similar output and better value from Trossard, Barkley (if he starts), McGinn, Perez, Tielemens...
