Eliteserien Fantasy – Gameweek 19 preview

There are a host of crucial games at both ends of the Eliteserien table this week. Title fights, relegation battles… and maybe a couple of matches that probably won’t matter much in the grand scheme of things, but what better way to find a great differential pick?

Rosenborg and Molde both suffered away defeats in their European playoffs. For Rosenborg it was a 2-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. Molde lost 2-1 to Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League, but that away goal means they’ll probably be the more confident of Norway’s representatives ahead of next week’s second legs. Rotation for some of the most popular fantasy picks seems likely once again.

Rosenborg vs. Stabæk

Another Saturday fixture, another chance to see Rosenborg’s team before the fantasy deadline. Will Emil Konradsen Ceide and Erik Botheim get another start? Samuel Adegbenro and Alexander Søderlund were among a host of star names to play 90 minutes in midweek, the former hitting the bar. Two of those names combined to earn a draw against Odd last weekend, as Even Hovland flicked Vegar Eggen Hedenstad’s free kick in at the near post. RBK were just the second team to take points off Odd in Skien in 2019.

Kasper Junker opened his Stabæk account in a comfortable win over Kristiansund, with Vadim Demidov claiming the assist. It took until the 80th minute to put the result beyond doubt, but Emil Bohinen finally rifled in a shot from the edge of the area, also claiming 2 bonus points. Andreas Hanche-Olsen has been crucial to recent form but was shown a fourth yellow card of the season against KBK and is suspended. With Matthew Rusike facing a continued injury absence, Youssef Toutouh (6m) will provide another midfield option. Stabæk beat Rosenborg at Nadderud in GW3 but have struggled on the road, especially against the league’s better sides; only the two sides propping up the table have picked up fewer points in away games.

Brann vs. Tromsø

It was another disappointing result against Mjøndalen for Brann, who were characterised by sluggish defending. Vito Wormgoor was hesitant as the hosts took the lead. Daouda Bamba volleyed the visitors level; Veton Berisha was awarded the assist although Kristoffer Barmen also contested the header. Håkon Opdal made a spectacular save which no doubt contributed to his bonus point, but it ultimately meant nothing for Brann. In the buildup to Mjøndalen’s winner, Barmen failed to control the ball in midfield and Taijo Teniste turned his back to divert a shot over his own keeper. This week’s visitors have shipped 14 goals in their last three away games, but no team has scored fewer goals in front of their own fans than Brann’s 9 this season.

Tromsø again showed more solidity at home as they came from behind to draw with Lillestrøm. Captain Simen Wangberg scored the goal, having been penalised in the first half for a perceived foul as a cross came in. Morten Gamst Pedersen provided the assist, his second attacking return in as many games. Lasse Nilsen will miss out here after picking up a first half injury against LSK.

FK Haugesund vs. Lillestrøm

Despite conceding an early goal, Haugesund turned the tables on Vålerenga who beat them comprehensively early in the season. Ibrahima Kone somehow failed to connect with a cross from close range in the first half, but FKH levelled soon after the break. Kevin Martin Krygård gave the ball to Niklas Sandberg on the right wing and Sandberg skipped past a challenge and curled in a precise left-footed effort from an acute angle. Kristoffer Velde completed the comeback, playing a one-two with Kone and finding the bottom left corner. A knee injury for Helge Sandvik in training means new signing Oskar Snorre could get the nod in goal ahead of Maciej Gostomski.

Arnor Smarason scored from the spot once again, this time after a foul on Joonas Tamm in the draw at Tromsø.

Kristiansund BK vs. Mjøndalen

Kristiansund barely troubled Stabæk, but could have reason to be more optimistic here as Flamur Kastrati is back in training. They’ve also added some support to midfield in the form of Godset’s Amahl Pellegrino and KFUM’s Olav Øby.

After an assist against Lillestrøm, Vetle Dragsnes added to his fantasy credentials against Brann. His low cross set up Stian Semb Aasmundsen’s opener and, with the help of a hefty deflection, he scored the winner from outside the box. Only a great save denied Sondre Solholm Johansen a fourth goal of the season. Aasmundsen is suspended for this game against his former club.

Molde vs. Odd

Europa League rotation caused problems for fantasy managers, as Magnus Wolff Eikrem was an unused substitute against Ranheim. Ohi also started on the bench and although he has showed attacking good rapport with Leke James, the latter has outscored him 8-1 over the last six league games after a brace last time out. Fredrik Sjølstad and Erling Knudtzon set up James’ goals, while Mathis Bolly was finally able to make an impact in Eliteserien, setting up Martin Ellingsen. On Thursday, Molde lost the away leg of their Europa League playoff to Partizan. Knudtzon went off in the first half, but it took his replacement Bolly just 10 minutes to score a crucial away goal, assisted by Eikrem.

Having achieved a respectable 1-1 draw with Rosenborg, a result here is crucial if Odd want to stay in the title race. Torgeir Børven had a couple of good chances but couldn’t score last week. Birk Risa got the goal, scoring with his back from an Elba Rashani corner.

Viking FK vs. Ranheim

Viking overwhelmed Strømsgodset. Fredrik Torsteinbø headed them in front from Ylldren Ibrahimaj’s corner – a seventh assist of the season for him. Zlatko Tripic rattled the bar but claimed an assist when a late challenge came in. Tommy Høiland dispatched the penalty en route to his best fantasy display of the season. In the second half, Høiland scored a majestic lob from outside the box, assisted by goalkeeper Arild Austbø. Defender Adrian Nilsen Pereira completed the scoring with some skilful control, set up by substitute Even Østensen. Tripic and Høiland are the form players ahead of a favourable schedule, while anyone from the stacked midfield or erratic defence can score well on their day.

Remember Erik Tønne? One of the budget stars of 2018 finally opened his account for the season, tucking in the rebound from Michael Karlsen’s shot. Tønne also delivered a pinpoint cross onto the head of Ola Solbakken, but Ranheim still fell to a 3-2 defeat against Molde. Separated from the relegation playoff place only by goal difference, they can now call upon Mushaga Bakenga who returns to the city where he made his name.

Strømsgodset vs. Sarpsborg 08

A huge game at the foot of the table at Marienlyst. Strømsgodset will hope they can turn in a similar performance to the one that saw off Vålerenga – Muhamed Keita was a big part of that and wasn’t risked in the heavy loss to Viking.

Like their opponents here, Sarpsborg are without an away win this year. Against Bodø/Glimt, however, they showed the endeavour which has seen them avoid losing to any of Molde, B/G, Odd or Rosenborg at home. New boy Mos will face his former employers having set up Kristoffer Zachariassen in the previous game.

Bodø/Glimt vs. Vålerenga

Amor Layouni’s brilliant season has earned him a Tunisia call-up and he was influential in the draw with Sarpsborg. Philip Zinckernagel played up front again and had the best early chance, forcing a save with a header from a Layouni cross. After Glimt fell behind, Layouni’s corner set up the equaliser, a glancing header from Ulrik Saltnes. Håkon Evjen could only manage a yellow card after a combined 35 fantasy points in his previous three outings. With Molde and Odd facing off on Sunday, B/G will know how this Monday night fixture affects their standing in the table.

Herolind Shala gave Vålerenga the lead as they slumped to a home loss, but they’ll be without him here after a broken arm sustained in training. Shala swept home a pass from Matthias Vilhjalmsson, who bettered his DGW17 score, but from there on it was frustration against Haugesund. Bård Finne’s minutes have been heavily curtailed once again, but with Shala out will Ronny Deila have any choice but to play Finne, who scored in the 6-0 demolition of B/G in GW14?

Unless K Layabout comes to my rescue I’m out if the cup.

Considering new goal for the season of owning the Dream Team 🙂 Currently have 8 - imagine I’ll be up to 9 next week by getting in either Worm or Berisha. That just leaves James to accelerate past Ohi when they’re done

Yep - kept him all this time instead of getting Evjen so nice to have some pay off finally. Cup opponent has Thor & Tripic but Wormgoor (K) - interesting match.

Comes down to this K Layouni Evjen and Bjorkan needs to outscore Layouni and Evjen by at least 11 tomorrow

      Feasible I guess

I'd say Layouni & Bjorkan could get 11 between them, for sure.

I need to hold a 15 point lead: Layouni vs. Bjorkan, Evjen & Vilhjalmsson tomorrow. Good luck! Hopefully Layouni does the job for both of us.

As someone without much experience in FPL - casual in 17/18, serious but without FFS membership so no OPTA stats in 18/19 - I have to thank everybody reading this

Took a gamble with playing Eliteserien as I had heard about how good the FPL managers from Norway were. The high level of competition in this league and interaction in comments here taught me a lot from a small sample of different minds

The game itself did one huge thing that prepared me for FPL 19/20: completely, utterly destroyed any hints of price bias in my mind, with the likes of Evjen, Psyche and Borven showing that pricing and history can be ignored for form and current season performance. I mean, we get to bench Ohi and Soderland now and then while perma-starting Borven. Almost impossible for a great-and-the-good FPL manager to bench Kane for Pukki

Eliteserien has been an unexpected gift. Thank you all 🙂

Also, I own Salah and Sterling but will cap Pukki in GW4

Why? He has the easiest opponent for any of the captaincy options to score against

Yes, Eikrem will most likely end the season on higher points than Borven, but we can cap Borven on weeks when he faces defences in utter shambles

How long will it take an FPL manager to realize this is happening with Pukki? Longer than it would take an Eliteserien 2019 player 🙂

Pretty hard to ignore Sterling at home vs. BHA......his forms not bad either.....if he wasnt in form then Pukki definitely would become an option...

Nice. It does give a different perspective, although team standards are closer than in the PL. Correlation/causation etc, but a couple of my worst FPL seasons coincided with using hyper granular stats. Trying again as a form-chasing casual this year.

Not ready to captain Pukki yet, but agree there's no particular reason to assume he won't score.

Funnily enough, team standards have been VERY close in FPL this season. All premiums are being chased/matched by budget options so far. I feel it won't last all season long, but what exactly tells us it wouldn't? It's already an unprecedented season with Pukki putting three perfect goals past Newcastle and Kane + Son blanking in the next Castle game; Man U blazing 4 past an impressive Chelsea, drawing against Europa-laden Wolves, then breaking down against the badly performing Palace at OT; Chelsea playing an entertaining game with Norwich, which would have been a 4-1 battering in previous seasons; Liverpool with no CS three GWs in... Etc

Borven, Layouni... I won't even bore you with the list of Eliteserien options who started by matching premiums and actually maintained it. We had hints of this with Doherty, Wan-B, Fraser, Wilson and Jimenez last season. Even Siggy ended up in the dream team. It could easily be happening again now, but price bias and refusal to detach from pre-18/19 reliance on premiums and 18/19 stats are hindering a majority of historically good FPL players

For now. A little early to draw conclusions and suspect final standings will be familiar. Start of the season is always awkward - for teams and for FPL. We all have a squad and no ability to capture all the form unless wildcarding early, but wildcarding on a limited data set and before CL/Europa kicks off. I agree it's important to differentiate between individuals and teams. For example will Norwich score enough to offset goals conceded? Who knows but that doesn't necessarily matter in considering a fwd. I don't think Pukki will continue at this rate, if only because the rest will have to learn to mark him out of games, but he doesn't necessarily have to to justify a 6.5-7m starting spot. Kane's been a nightmare for predictability for a while.

If the previous two seasons are anything to go by, Eliteserien tends towards ever greater value as the season goes on. Been made even more accomodating this year by early Rosenberg's form and risk of rotation with european games.

I captured all the form with hits 😀

And the point I'm making is that I'd definitely have joined the crowd of "Nah, none of this is sustainable" if I hadn't played Eliteserien this season

Things will even out and become clearer as the season progresses, but there are so many Rosenberg's right now in the big 6: Liverpool defence, Man U under the wheel, Unai's uncertain XI and tactics, Chelsea's hazards post-Hazard and with Kante clearly having an injury-ravaged season (Alli, KDB last season), Spurs lacking conviction to due where Eriksen's head may lie (I expect this to stop soon though). Big teams having issues for understandable/predictable reasons, not just a bad run of 4 games (City had that at a point last season, but we all knew it was a blip)

As for Eikrem + Ohi, we have Salah + Sterling. Premiums you can forget until something like the James upset occurs

Borven and Pukki are direct parallels. The belief that teams will learn to contain a player doesn't actually have much proof: Vardy, Kane, Aguero, Sterling, Salah, Mane, Mahrez, Lukaku, Jimenez, Jota, Arnautovic... There's a long list of attackers who started well but defenders never "learnt" to contain, because it really boils down to how good the attacker/defender is. Takes the attacker himself or his team losing steam for his stats to drop, as with Mitrovic for Fulham

A fair point and maybe. I'm not averse to hits this season. I picked up the Norwich and Pukki aspect because they were promoted so most teams have no direct experience. Likewise perhaps Norwich currently enjoy a wildcard factor. I knew nothing about him until a few weeks ago and have no idea what the future holds, but I'll curb my enthusiasm for now beyond a value pick in my team. Odd have been one of the better teams for some time. However you're correct that nobody was predicting that Borven would be top scorer at this stage, and by some margin, at the start of the season.

                                    Glad we agree 🙂

I don't want to push Cantwell as the new Evjen, as I doubt he'd pass Salah at any point in the season, but the parallel in the FPL community's attitude to Cantwell and the initial attitude to Evjen here is alarming

Seeing him as a 4.5 mid even when it has become clear that the authorities made a clear mistake of pricing him there. Lund only caught attention because everybody was looking for the next Wan-B in preseason. Now Cantwell is still owned by just 10% while people justify to themselves that the likes of Ceballos and Perez are worth more in points just because they are more expensive

Again, if Cantwell regresses: sell for a profit
If Pukki regresses: sell for a profit

Going against the tide of crystal clear form and fixtures while hoping the more expensive blanking asset finally has that 20-point haul already has many FPL managers chasing rank

I wouldn't go that far on 3 games form, but it's interesting to read your parallels with playing Eliteserien. One issue with that perspective is limited free transfers and wrong-way-round pricing i.e. it's great while it's working but if you're wrong harder to correct. But as the future is unknown that doesn't make it any less valid as an approach unless proven wrong - like every other strategy. And certainly less dull

Very easy to correct with a WC though. And, funnily enough, it's hard to go wrong with a core of Salah + Sterling. I flew up ranks by taking hits around the fringes of my squad (and Robbo)

-12 so far. -4 coming in GW4. Won an unexpected cash reward for GW3. Definitely far from dull 🙂

Yes, it could all have gone horribly wrong, but these were the hits:

Robbo (have TAA) + Locadia to Zinch + Pukki for GW2
Montoya + Perez + Wilson to Kelly + Mount + Barnes for GW3 (yes, I ignored KDB and Kane with a -8 even though I could afford them, due to my decision to avoid price bias)
GW4: Trossard to Cantwell (4.6) already done. Delaying Gallagher to Haller until team news

When making the moves, I was backed by stats, the eye test, and absolutely zero attachment to last season's performances or price bias. Many ways it could have gone wrong, but I had to be 100% certain with 0% fear to make such bold moves. I'll keep making such moves but with fewer hits coming. Being able to see Kane and Aguero bag braces or KDB grab a haul and deciding to go for cheaper options who fit my team better is batshit crazy and would have been frowned upon if I put it up as my plan on FFS comments... But there's some fun in that

Almost as fun as (P)ukki, aye? 😀

I'm not knocking that approach, only extrapolating from 3 games. There's a difference between picking differentials for the sake of it and rank vs. picking lesser owned players on form + stats + eye test. The first relies on superior knowledge over the majority which is possible but consistently unlikely. The second is more about attitude to ownership risk and the herd (fear). As you highlight it could all have gone horribly wrong so also need to factor in luck. But it didn't, likely because they were from the latter not former range above. I tend to start picking stupid differentials as the season progresses, and stubbornly holding through blanks. That's something I'm aiming to avoid, but usually relent to as boredom sets in. For some reason I find it much easier to be patient in Eliteserien.

Sold Robertson/Moura/Bernardo/Deeney for Ward/KDB/Martial/Pukki so not as punchy but net ok.
Undecided on this week's moves. Same for Eliteserien but Ohi should probably go

Ohi to James done with a cumulative -4. Forgotten the other moves already. 😀 My OR here is far from impressive, but I've been playing for fun and to monitor trends in preparation for FPL. It's the reason I've been less active on comments here since the FPL game was launched, as I've got money invested in leagues and FFS membership instead.

Your FPL transfers have been great, imo. Three games constitute a small data bank, I agree. I also hope I'll avoid stupid differentials later in the season

We should pick players that we think will score the most points, irrespective of price or position, it’s that simple

Here it tends to be is goal scoring defenders (not so much clean sheets) and attacking mids really.

In FPL defenders that get clean sheets and have attacking intent can be a great pick if you have patience and can ride out the odd game week of blanks.

But in both games you have to let the season run for a few weeks to zoom in on the value players that are going to score points.

I don’t think any decent FFer in either of the games pick players because of their price and we are all looking for the ‘magic bean’ or prolific 6 m attacker like Michu, Siggy, Kane or King in years gone by ... maybe Pukki this year is that player

At the end of the day, no matter how much we discuss it, it is not rocket science
