Can FPL bosses expect more attacking returns from Spurs winger Steven Bergwijn?

Steven Bergwijn (£7.5m) is off and running already in Fantasy Premier League, having scored Tottenham Hotspur’s opening goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City.

Bergwijn’s double-digit haul on his debut has already put him on the FPL radar, with the Dutch winger the third-most-popular transfer target among Fantasy midfielders in the run-up to Gameweek 26.

The Netherlands international was signed by Spurs only last week, joining the Lilywhites from PSV Eindhoven in a reported £27m deal.

Bergwijn has penned a four-and-a-half-year contract with Jose Mourinho’s side and it was perhaps telling that his new manager threw him straight into the starting XI against Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions on Sunday.

Mourinho said of Bergwijn’s display after full-time:

It was a debut goal that was the icing on the cake of a very good performance. Independent of the goal I would say his performance was very good, very solid. Very mature.

We worked hard during the week. He came to us Tuesday so he had a complete week to work and to try as fast as possible to understand what we wanted from him.

So very solid performance against such a difficult opponent like Kyle Walker, but then he was clever enough to appear also in other zones and try to create some problems for City.

So very, very good performance. Also defensively very aware of his position, defending zonal, covering spaces. Very, very good and then, of course, the goal is a great goal. It’s so important for us.

Is Bergwijn a viable cheaper alternative to Son Heung-min (£10.0m) then or indeed an appealing midfield option in his own right?

Our Scout Report below uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, so only those who have signed up to valid packages will be able to access it in full.

The History and Statistics

Born in October 1997, Bergwijn was on the books of Ajax as a youth before switching allegiances to PSV in 2011.

The winger progressed to the club’s under-19 side before making his debut for Jong PSV (the Dutch giants’ reserve team) at the age of 16 in August 2014.

Bergwijn went on to make 31 appearances for Jong PSV in Eerste Divisie (the Dutch second tier), scoring on 14 occasions and claiming six assists.

The then-teenage attacker caught the eye of PSV head coach Philip Cocu during his spell with the reserves, intermittently appearing for the senior team in both the Eredivisie and UEFA Champions League until his breakthrough season arrived in 2016/17.

Appearing mostly as a substitute in that campaign, Bergwijn established himself as a first-team regular in 2017/18 and was directly involved in 19 of his side’s league goals.

An explosive 2018/19 saw him register 14 goals and 12 assists in 33 Eredivisie appearances, with the new Spurs signing coming up against his future employers at Wembley in a Champions League group stage match in November 2018.

Bergwijn had already plundered 15 attacking returns in 16 top-flight starts for PSV this season before his move to north London, departing Eindhoven having scored 29 goals and registered 35 assists in 112 Eredivisie games.

The full breakdown is as follows:

SeasonAppsGoalsAssists
2014/15100
2015/16500
2016/172522
2017/1832811
2018/19331412
2019/2016510

Having represented the Netherlands at every age level from under-17s upwards, Bergwijn made his debut for the national side in October 2018 and has gone on to feature for his country on nine occasions (without scoring).

Am I crazy to be considering Henderson, the Ox or even Redmond for a short term move?
I appreciate the waste of a pool slot argument for the first two. Any worth pursuing or just avoid.

Would only own Ings from their attack. The rest far too inconsistent. Rather have their defenders for good fixtures
Hendo playing well and Ox getting extra run with Mane out and Fabinho coming back from injury. Basically you get what you pay for. Both decent 5th options if you’re happy to pay that much

Despite the recent form, I don’t think you can consider those guys at the 3rd Liverpool player. Will restrict you when you feel you need a 2nd defender or Firmino

I thought that would be KWP, not JWP. If wrong, still (kind of) happy with his threat from set pieces. And I admit it's a punt based on alluring fixtures.

Not a southampton guru by any means so happy to be proven wrong but in my memory JWP deals mainly in 2s and 5s with the odd 7 here or there, Redmond has the better stats recently and is capable of a 13 or something amongst his 2s so may be the better option. Agree that KWP will eventually take that RB slot

“I’ve got to say…I thought John Lundstram was outstanding when he came on“, Wilder said.
“He’s come out the team for a couple of games. He’s been brilliant for us. His energy levels have dropped down but we’ve got genuine competition and John knows that”.

Yeah, I'm tempted to as well.

Interesting that the only home game he's been dropped for was Man City, where he also missed the away fixture. Wilder said that he would 'have a look' at the best way to play against City. So perhaps it was for tactical reasons?

Who knows, but maybe Lundstram's industry might be needed when they play Bournemouth at home this week.

I'm keeping too, and have been planning to. I'll likely sell next week or before the blank.

At home, Lundstram is a better pick than away I think. I believe he plays GW26 and if he doesn't, definitely GW27

Good for Wilder, bad for FPL. Two guys fighting for one spot is not what FPL players want. So Lundstram is a sell in my book. Plus, there are plenty out there bettering him for points in the last 6-8 weeks. Why take the risk?

Pep will leave MC this summer. I can see the signs already. If the team enters the CL knock-outs in this poor form, they will get knocked out. His growing frustration at being beaten by lesser teams in the league. His inability to keep this group upto the high standards he demands. I can see him walking. He has done it before.

    Lundstram*/Kelly*/Holgate/TAA/Soyuncu*
    Martial*/KDB/Salah/Traore/Dendoncker
    Ings/Vardy/DCL

Had Lundstram since GW1 so have a lot of value in him. Originally I was going to do DCL to Aubameyang this GW but defence should take priority? If I want Aubameyang I would have to do Soyuncu to VVD.

Anything pressing that needs a WC? Thinking of doing A this GW and B GW27

    a. Evans > Stephens
    b. Ryan > Henderson
    c. both -4
    d. WC

    1ft 2itb
    Pope
    Evans* TAA Rico Lascelles
    Grealish KDB salah traore
    Vardy Ings

    Ryan* Lundstram connolly* Mane

Would keep Evans. Has good fixtures after City. B if any of those but would downgrade to a 4.0 and have some cash personally.

    Hey guys,

Seeking your opinions here. I've got Greenwood in a draft league. Kane is available. I feel confident
I can trade Greenwood out and work around Kane's injury until he's back. Do you think it's worth
    the risk or don't bother?

    Thanks

You might be holding Harry a long time, and he is usually pretty sluggish after a long lay off, but if you are confident you can...

Thanks man, I think Greenwood's time will be even more limited now. Ashley Barnes is also available, so can also look to him as cover until Kane is back.

Whats more important over the next two weeks?
    A) Double Liverpool defence
    B) Jiminez

Can get Traore in 352 with A so edging that way

    Vardy, Firmino, Ings

    (McGovern - Cantwell, Soyuncu, Lascelles)

    Captain: KDB

Lpool's game against Atletico and potentially plenty of City goals lead me to this option.

No way to get Kun without destroying team and take hits.

I really think he will do serious damage this week,Mahrez too.

For those chasing and can afford maybe now is the time.
