UCL Fantasy: Tuesday review, Wednesday preview and tips for substitutes and captaincy

The UEFA Champions League Fantasy game allows managers to change their starting XIs and captains – with certain restrictions – following the culmination of the Tuesday matches and before the start of Wednesday’s games.

In this article, we’ll recap last night’s fixtures and summarise the captaincy and substitution options available to UCL Fantasy bosses before this evening’s 17:55 GMT deadline.

The three players we backed for captaincy in yesterday’s article scored five goals between them.

Tuesday’s fixtures saw Chelsea, Sevilla, Barcelona and Juventus through to the knockout stage of the competition and tonight could see Manchester City and Bayern Munich join them.

Last Night’s Review

Starting in the early kick-offs, Sevilla and Chelsea both won their games on the road but more importantly, both conceded.

Edouard Mendy (€5.2m) shipped his first goal for Chelsea in the Champions League and Timo Werner (€10.6m) continued his poor form in front of goal, although he did set up Oliver Giroud’s (€7.3m) winning strike.

For Sevilla, former Barcelona starlet Munir El-Haddadi (€7m) scored his third goal off the bench in the double-header against Krasnodar and may have done enough to earn himself a starting berth in future games for the Andalusian side.

In the 8pm kick-offs, Manchester United’s 4-1 win saw them keep their place at the top of their tough Group H, with Bruno Fernandes (€9.5m) taking the headlines with his stunning brace. United assets are perhaps not the best for future investment, as they now set up to face two top-class sides in need of a win and could have a dead rubber in the final round of matches.

In the other game in their group, PSG continued their poor form in front of goal in Europe as only a Neymar penalty saw them beat an injury-ravaged RB Leipzig side.

In Group G, a second-string Barcelona team led by Martin Braithwaite (€5.8m) hammered a COVID-riddled Dynamo Kyiv side to stay three points clear at the top of their group. Expect Braithwaite to start again in Hungary next week and potentially find himself on the scoresheet once again.

A star-studded but poor Juventus team scraped past Ferencvaros, as Cristiano Ronaldo (€12m) was once again limited to just six points. Andrea Pirlo can’t seem to get his side ticking just yet but Alvaro Morata (€9m) has been their star man in this competition from start to finish.

In Group E, Erling Haaland (€11m) and Ciro Immobile (€10.5m) both scored braces at home to once again live up to their price tags. Haaland has six goals in his first four games in the Champions League this season and with Lazio and Zenit still to come, will likely add to his tally. Dortmund’s defence made it three Champions League clean sheets in a row, with full-backs Raphael Guerreiro (€6m) and Thomas Meunier (€5m) threatening as always.

Substitutions and Captaincy

As always, four points or less is definitely worth the risk with substitutions.

Wilmar Barrios (€4.5m) is in 45% of teams and having conceded a penalty and picked up a yellow card, received just one point last night – so he is an obvious candidate to make way.

Liverpool, Ajax and Bayern players sat on your bench have to take priority with their plum home fixtures. But be wary of rotation all round, especially from Manchester City and Liverpool, with news potentially filtering in throughout the day. Kevin De Bruyne (€11.5m) and Kyle Walker have not travelled with the City squad, but Alassane Plea (€8.2m) and Antony (€5.9m) have both been declared fit for their respective games.

Onto changing captaincy.

With Robert Lewandowski (€12m) facing a plum home fixture, sticking with players on six points or less will likely be punished. A returning Mohamed Salah (€11.5m) and in-form Joao Felix (€9m) both also have great fixtures and seem ready to put up big scores.

    Pick one:

    A) Kane > Vardy (c)
    B) Zouma > Cancelo

Very true, but one can always drop to a Bamford and then Rodriguez can go to a Salah/KDB.

Could even do Jimenez and Rodriguez to Bamford and Salah (c) -4 this GW

Wanted to cover city but couldn’t afford the more reliable options in the side. Don’t want to be left with a 1 pointer when Jesus is benched for Aguero, comes on in the 88th minute and does nothing - hence the quandary.

Then again, I suppose the risk could be worth the reward!

    Who would you play?

    A) Chilly (Tot H)
    B) Dallas (Eve A)

Everton def has been underwhelming, to say the least, and out of the two, I'm expecting none to keep a CS. Given how sound Tot def has been, I'm having second thoughts on playing chilly.

    Any thoughts??

If u don't expect either to keep clean sheet why not go with the one who likes to be in the 6 yard box looking for goals

I know, but Spurs def has been amazing. Cancelo tried to break it but couldn't, hence the confusion. But given Puli is fit and so is Silva, Idk might as well go with chilly

Dallas has been really impressive in terms of shots taken, and Everton's def has been struggling after the first few weeks, they're more dependent on their attack to win. That's the only reason I'm even considering him in place of Chilly, who has spurs.

not to be rude, but I find that argument really illogical, team sheets are always subjective to the form of all the teams in general. If I had a formation in which I could afford benching Robbo or Chilly or Trent against Spurs atm, I would.

        1. ElChapo
          • 2 Years

4 attacking returns and 4 clean sheets in 6 games so far, there's a reason you've spent 6 million on a defender.

          No need to overcomplicate.

not overcomplicating, but analyzing. I play FPL because it's fun to analyze the patterns and swings, I genuinely have fun doing that. If I don't analyze every GW, I would be better playing a lottery than this game.

If I get Salah this week then KDB will come in for Bruno next week.

Would Hamez continue assisting the assists?

After watching the last few games, I've noticed that he has settled in the deep-lying playmaker role. Although being the creator of the movements, I don't see him bagging many assists, given the exception of corners. Even his freekicks are a threat, but considering he's not playing the entire game, his expected goals and assist decreases exponentially.

This previous GW, majority of assists were coming off Iwobi, who was being supplied by Hamez, the same with Digne on the other side. I'm noticing a trend of Hamez passing to an intermediate who puts the ball in for DCL.

This just shows the depth of Hamez's vision, he's one of the better playmakers this season, although I argue his worth as an FPL asset has decreased.

    Any opposing thoughts??

I like Grealish, Jota, Ziyech more at the price

Have Grealish, but kinda losing hope in him for the same reason. The man's probably one of the best in PL atm, and he's at his peak. But his style of play is way way too passive, whenever he gets in the box, he's always looking to pass the ball, even if he would be better off taking a shot.

Jota is in form, and Ziyech may be gold.

I think this will be his last game in my team, probably not going to pick him again. Not threatening enough from FPL perspective. I wonder how he managed so many returns at start...

I'm thinking of shipping him off for someone this GW, but idk. When he was new, he was settling, he tended to go forward, but now he only does that as a last resort.

I’m thinking of shifting him for Jota this week, although he did play very well first half against Fulham. 4 successive blanks and Jota is on fire at the moment. As LR pointed out in the most recent FPL Wire episode, get on him whilst he’s hot.

Great comments and I 100% with your observations, I too have Hamez who I have had since GW1, but I feel Jota offers more and this will be my move this GW. Ideally I would hold for one more week, but both Hamez looks like dropping and Jota rising tonight, which will be a 0.2 price difference. I will wait to see the game tonight and keep an eye on FPL stats.

exactly my plan. Btw if you're short on cash, be careful with FPL stats, there have been a lot of inconsistencies in the readings in the past week in terms of rises and drops.

Really difficult to judge Hamez on the last few games ... Tired, injured and key players missing

The last game had all the key players, barring Coleman, but Iwobi did justice to that position. I just feel like he's settled in a playmaker position, but yes fatigue may be a concern.

Wasn't expecting much from Hamez post IB, and it was an away match - Be tempted to keep him for the Leeds match
Does his next price drop affect your selling price?

Keep Kane and Son while they're doing the business. Try getting Salah another route. Aguero is class when fit but unfortunately hard to rely on his fitness plus City not playing well.

That site would suggest City will batter Burnley. 5-0, 4-1, 1-0, 5-0 wins in last 2 seasons

        1. HashAttack
          • 3 Years

Certainly expecting a battering - last three at MCI have been 5-0, 5-0, 5-0 ... but the points have been spread all over the MCI team, with Foden and Mahrez the most likely scorers

          1. FPLShaqiri
            • 3 Years
            1 month, 24 days ago

So what your saying is you expect City to win 5-0 and Aguero not to be involved? If he starts and City score 5 goals I'd say the chance of Aguero not being involved is very low. Saying Foden and Mahrez are the most likely scorers because they scored vs Burnley in the past is a flawed thought process.

The drawback with Aguero is (and always will be while Jesus is fit) his limited minutes.

We'll just have to wait until Saturday to find out - Maybe the level of opposition means less minutes for Aguero and Sterling, more minutes for the likes of Foden and Mahrez. Maybe Torres ends up with a haul
