My Wildcard squad for Double Gameweek 26 and when I’m Free Hitting

It has never been more important for Fantasy Premier League managers to get their chip strategy right as we face more Blank and Double Gameweeks between now and the end of the 2020/21 season.

14 teams play twice in Double Gameweek 26 so the points-ceilings for a Wildcard, Free Hit, Triple Captain and Bench Boost are all higher than usual.

And, while preparing the biggest Double Gameweek of the season is very exciting, I still have half an eye on the tricky Blank Gameweeks in the months to come.

I have already used my Triple Captain chip in Double Gameweek 19 and my Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 24, so I am deploying my Wildcard in Double Gameweek 26 to focus on moving my cash back into the starting XI after spreading it out on bench players.

This was my squad at the end of Gameweek 25:

I want to move out my contingent of West Ham and Burnley players and focus more money on the starting XI for the remainder of the season.

This is how my Wildcard squad is currently shaping up;:

I have made a total of eight changes, which is on par for what I would expect with the second Wildcard. I could have possibly done without it but I saw it as an opportunity to restructure my squad for the long-term, and also for Blank Gameweek 29.

Like Blank Gameweek 18, I am struggling to see fixtures I want to attack here.

Brighton v Newcastle, on paper, looks like an appealing fixture for the Seagulls but they are such an unpredictable team. No team has had more shots than Brighton (106) over the last six Gameweeks but no team has scored fewer goals (four). I would find it difficult to back the likes of Neal Maupay (£6.1m) and any more than one defender would feel a bridge too far given Newcastle’s need for points.

Aston Villa’s form is on a downward trajectory while Tottenham Hotspur are not exactly setting the league alight with their attacking displays. It feels like a 1-1 kind of fixture and I can’t pick a clear winner here. I’m likely going to have Son Heung-min (£9.5m), Harry Kane (£11.1m) and Emiliano Martinez (£5.3m).

With West Ham v Arsenal, again, I am struggling to pick a clear winner here. West Ham are arguably the favourites given their form this season but again I don’t see a blowout win for either team.

Fulham v Leeds is the fixture I really like. I’d want Raphinha (£5.4m) and Patrick Bamford (£6.9m) for this one and possibly one of Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) or Josh Maja (£5.5m).

If I were to use my Free Hit in Gameweek 29, it would probably look something like this:

It hardly fills me with confidence, and we could see another 30-40 point week. I can’t even pick a captain I really like here. There are also quite a few attackers up against the defenders so again the point ceiling is low.

I think it could be a case of quality over quantity. With Son, Kane, Martinez and Ben White (£4.4m) already in the squad, I can focus on bringing in four players for GW29 (three FT+a hit) which would likely be Raphinha, Patrick Bamford, Michail Antonio (£6.5m) and maybe Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m), depending on Arsenal’s form. I’d rather have Jack Grealish (£7.6m) if he’s fit though.

What appeals to me here is that Leeds have Sheffield United in Gameweek 30, so I am happy to retain their attackers for the following week. Harvey Barnes (£6.7m) is an easy transition to Raphinha, given Barnes has a blank in 29 and then Manchester City in 30. Antonio has Wolves, which is not too bad. Aubameyang has Liverpool, which isn’t as stern a test as it used to be. Villa have Fulham in Gameweek 30 too.

When will I use my Free Hit?

Gameweek 33 is the week of the League Cup Final which means Spurs, Man City and their originally scheduled league opponents Southampton and Fulham have a missing fixture. The fixtures in 33 are far more appealing in terms of points potential.

The Villa v West Brom, Liverpool v Newcastle and Leicester v Crystal Palace fixtures appeal as does Leeds v Manchester United. I would feel much more comfortable loading up on assets from these teams for a Free Hit and I see more potential for a bigger score here. The ticker colour coding gives it away – there are way more blue fixtures in this week.

It is worth mentioning Spurs play Sheffield United in Gameweek 34, so this would let you retain their assets for that fixture. Spurs in general have a good fixture run between 27-30 (Palace, Arsenal, Villa, Newcastle) so I don’t mind holding their assets, despite their stuttering form. Man City have Palace away too in 34.

Also, there is a small chance that the pending Spurs v Southampton fixture goes to Gameweek 32, if Man City beat Everton in the FA Cup. If that is the case, Spurs having a double in 32 and a blank in 33 would make things tricky to navigate without the Free Hit in 33.

Conclusion

A lot could change between now and Gameweek 29, but I am not seeing the upside in a Gameweek 29 Free Hit at the moment. Getting the right six-to-seven players should be enough to keep up with those who do use their Free Hit, as we saw in Gameweek 18.

We have covered Free Hit strategy as well as Double Gameweek 26 extensively in this week’s edition of The FPL Wire (https://youtu.be/xP3DuM_MFPM) where Lateriser and I are joined by fellow Pro Pundit Tom Freeman. I highly recommend a listen to get you prepped for the biggest double gameweek ever.

Good luck and hope you enjoyed reading.

    Argggghhh.

Im on WC and was all set to FH in 29 but this article has shed some serious light and logic in swapping FH to 33.

If you were active on WC and FH in hand would you follow Zophar advice in the article?

      I’ll try the option open

The difference to Zophar’s is my WC carries 4 eve/avl players. I want to attack the possible DGW28

I will keep Spurs, avl players for Gw29 and try to use FT to make up numbers. If too hard, then FH

It's down to you at the end of the day. Personally I've always thought FH in a big blank week was a dud, and given the fixtures in 29, this is a bigger dud than usual.

The big reason why I am now considering moving FH to 33. I think I’ll stay agile to circumstances. We know how much it has changed this season.

Depends how much preparing for 29 would compromise your WC. GW33 is still 7 weeks away so it's easy enough to prepare for then with free transfers too.

Having the same conundrum, but KDB is swapping one rotation risk for another. I also think their point potential are similar this season. I'm leaning towards swapping Sterling for Kane (and captain), with Barnes replacing Sterling. I scouted the City fan forum, and most seem to think Sterling won't start first game

Current set up 1 x City Def 2 x City Mids

I'm binning to enable Son/Kane and getting Ederson )Safety of starts) to give 2 City Def & 1 City Mid.

Might then get him back for 27 if likelyhood of 2 starts looks good.

I’m considering holding Grealish instead of a hit to get rid, because I can start Raphinha (or Bamford) and anyone I bring in gives me a problem for DGW29.

The only option I can see is Lookman if Grealish is out for several weeks but I’ll await the presser.

Anyone else with the same issue?

      1. Pukki Blinders

I'm holding him, but I'm more than happy to sit him on the bench for a bit. Smith will be purposely vague on the injury as he thinks he's a master tactician.

        1. Merlinho
          • 11 Years
          2 months, 15 days ago

That’s what I’m worried about - I don’t want to hold him and then end up still needing to bin him after price drops. Still a 4 point hit this week for Lookman vs start Raphinha doesn’t feel great so I think I’ll avoid the hit.

He has no career without Bruno, hence starting him in almost every single game ever

        Quick question gents...

I have Kane and Vardy - my logic is that if the majority TC Kane (I have already used mine), I had might as well Captain Vardy. If Kane hauls, I'd be left behind anyway, whereas if Vardy hauls I'd be laughing. I'm thinking sh1t or bust, tbh.

        Any other rationale?

Vardy has outreturned Kane in last 2 and plays for the better team. Fulham are equalling Arsenal defence recently so fixtures even.

Think the near universal Kane selection is heavily reliant on a poor Fulham.

Better to get 2/3rd of the points than 1/3rd of the points. If kane mega hauls, you still have most of it and vardy as a "cover" for the points you lose out on. I would deffo cap kane if i had both.
Leicester lost in EL and had their usual shitty game. Go for the safe kane cap choice 😉

Looking at transfer in numbers, looks like Kane might still be owned by less than 40% (on course to 2.5mill owners approx). Given quite a few have used their TC in DGW19, TC Kane still kind of differential

The more I think about it, the more I think it's HAS to be the week for the TC dice roll.

        Salah *
        Bruno *
        DCL *
        Kane / Son *
        Vardy *
        Gundo * / Sterling

Getting the TC right (or wrong) on any of these players is going to upturn mini leagues and see massive green (or red) arrows. (*I have starred players.)

For me it's between DCL (SOU/wba) or Bruno (che/cpl). I'm likely to throw it all on Blue tonight — it's been a poetic season for Everton, at times, and DCL is in for the Golden boot. A pair of goals + assist + 3-4 baps not unimaginable. Note: I've not that much to lose as I'm 45pts off runaway ML leader who's flirting with 10k.

DCL is a vanity pick + differential TC. Most of the lads doing well in the ML are Liverpool/City/Man U fans and will all pick Salah/Gundo/Bruno... I'm happy to go rogue(ish).

It's now Kane or DCL for me too.

            Penalty looks advantage.

It's very possible that Siggurdsson doesn't start (James/Allan/Davies/Digne/Rich/Gomes/Doucoure all more likely IMO). If he doesn't, AND with DCL in line for golden boot - he **could** be on pens... (long shot justifying long shot)

Many of us can’t get captain right...let alone TC
With so many options this week it’s really tough
if I used it this week it’s more the lure of the dgw as opposed to be confident of solid returns

Over the season picking the captain could be regarded as a cumulative skill — and one I try to plan for as much as possible — but week to week it really feels like a lottery.

TC is the big gamble — but don't remember a DGW offering so many options...

For non Kane owners going into this gw, have you now brought him in...if so, what were your moves?

Mainly tempted to do it to prevent massive rank drop if he hauls but at 120k rank, I feel like going without him saving -8 in the process

Yes it seems like a lot of players are needing a -8 to justify getting him in. I guess its down to your own personal moves.

Effectively for me it would be Sterling +4 or Kane -4.

Knowing that Kane hasn't blanked against bottom 8 teams all season does worry me though.

He has 14 goals in 14 games vs Burnley & Fulham
If he got a G+A across the 2 games that wouldn’t cover the -8 but would help for gw29, unless of course they continue to be rubbish and Villa beat them then as well

I’d be selling Sterling to fund it. Gund in Ings out

Yes i am leaning this way. I could use those hits elsewhere to improve the team but then i remember K ane x 2 vs Salah x 1 haha. Atm i wouldn't even C Salah.

                Salah
                Bruno
Sterling - got him for Kdb a while back instead of Gundogan
Barnes - just bought for Grealish
                Raphinha

Bamford Ings forward line so need to take -4. Tempted by Richarlison as something feels wrong owning DCL 3 times

With potential of FH33 stated by this article, so I will now have to navigate BGW29 with FTs.

10 DGW players (*) now. Is it worth to take more hits to include explosive DGW player into my XI?

        *Martinez
        *Dias - *Stones - *AWB
        *Salah - *Bruno - *Gundo - *Barnes
        *Kane - *DCL - Bamford
Bench : Raphinha, Dallas, Mitchell | Leno

        My Options
        (A) -4 hits for Bamford -> Vardy
..... Less confidence now as Maddison's injury could weaken their attacks. Vardy also played 90 minutes last night and that could cause a return of injury.

        (B) -8 hits for Raphinha + AWB -> Son + Targett
..... Both Son and Targett will play in BGW29, I could consider this as taking early hits and increase potential return from DGW26.

        (C) Ignore both Son and Vardy. Just play Bamford .. or Raphinha?

I've currently got a decent but not exceptional bench boost of Pope - Bamford - Dallas - Cresswell

I obviously need to keep my powder dry for blank GW29 of which 3 of these players are key. Currently i have 6 starters in that GW including that bench.

My question to you fine folk is - would you increase the BB potential of that bench by swapping Dallas/Creswell for Targett for a hit? or is it just not worth it

I see what you mean mate it is definitely a favorable fixtures list but think it's 6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other

I think BB this GW or 30 would give similar (hopefully decent) results - but this GW 26 is here and now and everyone looks fighting fit so i'm going to pull the trigger

I'll have to say though it did arouse my interest considerably
