FPL team guide 2021/22 – Wolverhampton Wanderers: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season concludes with this preview of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After three successful seasons winning promotion to, and then establishing themselves in, the Premier League under manager Nuno Espírito Santo Wolves’ momentum stalled last term as significant injuries to key players such as Raul Jiménez (£7.5m) and Jonny (£4.5m) took their toll at both ends of the pitch.

The Molineux side’s final position of 13th was a significant drop from the two seventh-place finishes they had managed since rejoining the top flight and in the end, Santo’s departure by mutual consent seemed strangely unsurprising.

Former Benfica boss Bruno Lage is the new man in the hot seat. Wolves assets, particularly in defence, have generally dropped in FPL price this year, but could Lage’s attacking philosophy take the club back into contention for a European place?

We assess the Fantasy appeal of Wolves ahead of 2021/22 in this piece, which takes Opta player and team data from our Premium Members Area.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

THE DEFENCE

Expected goals conceded (xGC)49.819th

To many FPL managers, it felt last season as if Wolves defenders were underperforming the price tags they had acquired following strong performances in the previous couple of campaigns. It is certainly true that all their team defensive numbers were down with positions falling from around fifth in 2019/20 to around tenth in 2020/21.

However, the drop-off was felt more acutely in Fantasy games as Wolves fell from equal fourth in the crucial clean sheets statistic to 14th overall. That the actual difference was ten shut-outs instead of 13 illustrates that 12 clean sheets is something of a par score in FPL.

As the table above shows, no fewer than six out of 20 Premier League teams kept exactly a dozen clean sheets last season while three further teams kept 11.

For Wolves, both actual and expected goals conceded worsened by about 12. The most significant contributor to that seems to have been big chances conceded which declined from a league-leading 47 the season before to a tenth-placed 72 this time around.

Shots in the box conceded increased by around 16%, too.

Above: Wolves defence 2020/21 (left) vs. Wolves defence 2019/20 (right)

The home and away performances of the Wolves defence last season were mirror images in overall Fantasy terms, with the absence of crowds seemingly a significant factor in the negation of home advantage. Both at Molineux and on the road Wolves kept five clean sheets, conceded one or two goals ten times and three or more goals on four occasions.

It should be emphasised that, even facing disruption and a loss of form, the Wolves rearguard only reverted from being one of the most secure in the league to simply average. They were by no means terrible which suggests that a standard price of £4.5m for their defenders could be a sound investment if there is even a small bounce back – although Lage’s attacking mindset is a concern on the clean sheet front.

THE ATTACK

Total    Rank v other Premier League sides
Goals    3616th
Shots    46310th
Shots in the box28111th
Shots on target15311th
Big chances46=18th
Expected goals (xG)36.8717th

Up front, a couple of statistics slightly improved from 2019/20. Wolves managed two more shots (admittedly a lot less than 1% of their total) and also seven more shots on target which was enough to move them up a place in the rankings.

However, almost everything else fell dramatically and again, particularly at the business end. Goals scored went from 51 (=8th) to 36 (16th), though that total was almost exactly in line with the number of expected goals (36.87), and big chances again seemed the obvious culprit, almost halving from 83 (6th) to 46 (18th).

    Opportunity cost

For every player you choose you lock out multiple others.

If you choose Trent you choose not to access the value pool for 4.5 and 5.0 defenders.

If you choose Bruno you choose to avoid the risky 7.0-8.0 midfielders.

If you choose Kane you choose not to access the value pool for 6.5-8.0 forwards.

I cant understand why everyone has Trent.

Agreed. I think beyond THAT season, TAA offers minimum value at current price.

Best FPL defensive asset in the league with Brentford, Norwich, Burnley, and Palace in the first 6, I can't understand why anyone wouldn't.

Every team with Trent has a dubious midfielder, so its not as simple as saying that Trent is a good pick in isolation.

Trent and Raph vs 4.5 and Son. I fail to see how Trent wins that competition.

Hmm. That’s simply not true, though, is it? Unless you’re assuming everyone has Bruno and Salah as well.

And you don’t miss out on the value pool of 4.5 - 5.0m defenders by having Trent either. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Picking any expensive player means you have to sacrifice elsewhere. I’m not sure I understand your argument.

Excellent form at the end of last season, didn't play at the Euros so he's fresh, on setpieces, in a defence that will have VVD and Gomez back at some point and now has Konate.

I get what you mean to an extent but that's the game, having to make choices between players. I could say I don't understand why nearly everyone is spending 25% of their entire budget on 2 mids. You're just saying that the mids are risky but the cheaper defs and forwards are value because it suits that argument. How can you say that there won't be value in the likes of Harrison, Jota, Grealish, Greenwood or Foden?

      1. Ginkapo FPL
        • 12 Years

I said risky not lacking value. I am sure some of the mid price mids will perform, but which ones when?

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

By the same logic a lot of the 4.5 defs and cheaper forwards are risks too. A lot of the defenders are rotation risks or playing for teams that aren't exactly always good for many clean sheets, the same argument could be made for a lot of the forwards (will Toney perform? Will Wilson and Antonio stay fit? Is Iheanacho going to play deeper or be benched often?). I'd argue a lot of the mids have less risks but I mean saying we don't know what mids will perform is the same for every area

I think there is some FOMO with TAA and people have very strong memories of him whether or not they owned him for that 24 point haul vs Leicester a couple of years back.

There is probably better value to be had in the West Ham and Chelsea full backs.

Chilwell and Cresswell almost certainly beats TAA and any 4.5 def

It's true about opportunity cost. But TAA does not lock you out of the value pool of 4.5 or 5.0 def.

He's very reliable as a defensive anchor and the budget saved doesn't demonstrably improve the rest of the team from what I've tried building. It's odd, but downgrading TAA means you also likely avoid the 6.5-8.0m mids because you'd conceivably use the funds to upgrade there to Sancho, Son, Mahrez type of players.

Good team balance is very achievable by having him in so I don't feel the need to downgrade him seeing as I can't use the funds more efficiently.

Also TAA is legitimately amazing in FPL.

In 19/20, from GW7-30 a period of 24 weeks, he was the highest scoring player in the entire game. Yes, the entire game not just defenders. When he's hot and Liverpool are keeping clean sheets he's genuinely irreplaceable.

The budget backup in defence affords you the luxury of Trent or Robbo (both 200+ returners for £2-3m more).

You can't pull the same trick with forwards (not if you want to clock up similar figures), and the mid-price mids are still speculative at best.

Feels an ideal time, to my eyes, to play heavy at the back.

Sounds like the type of post someone makes when they need you to convince them to go against the template.

He has likely sat at home creating his ideal team but needs to lose TAA and FOMO is holding him back.

Last seasons FPL winner did not begin with the template team and neither did the guy who spent most weeks at No1.

You have to take some risks outside the template to win FPL but not so much inorder to finish in the top 1%.

For ESR, it depends if ARS sign an attacking mid like Maddison or Odegaard.

Sarr and Watford's opening fixtures is an interesting option worth considering. Certainly a risk but he has talisman vibes and potentially on pens.

Lol, why would he come to Arsenal?

Arsenal get players that can't go to better teams. Most of them wait it out for other clubs to come in for them, if nothing happens, they sign up.

Just seen this update on Telles..............may be better news on a Shaw start if he is close to fitness...
"His ankle injury is a little bit more severe than we hoped and he’ll be out for a little spell at least, the whole of August I would think.

I think he could be a decent risk. He is one worth having on the watchlist anyway.
Decent fixtures. Ticked along nicely at Palace always seemed like the number two/three option after Zaha and Milosovic.
Townsend is a Rafa favourite. Fixtures look decent.
If I needed to save 1m for whatever reason I would look at him.
Only question is will Rafa have him as a starter in two out of three games for example?

    Morning all!

Rate my team please, after much tinkering I think I'm set (until this evening where I'll tinker some more).

Bachmann (Could be Sanchez is Foster nails down #1)
TAA - Robertson - Coufal - White (Arsenal) - Veltman
    Salah - Bruno - Son - ESR - Bissouma
    Toney - Watkins - Obafemi

Hurts my soul wasting the striker slot but I can't cut 2mil out of the rest of the team.

    Thoughts?

    Thoughts on this draft

    Sanchez
    TAA-Shaw-Robbo-Fofana
    Salah-Harrison-Bruno
    Watkins-Cavani-/Antonio (or Wilson)

    Subs : Steele - Brownhill - Gilmour - Manquillo

    Possible changes
    1) Antonio(Wilson) > Toney , Harrison> Raphina , Manquillo > White
    2)Cavani > Wilson/Antonio , Harrison> Raphina , Manquillo > White

    Firpo Llorente Koch/Cooper Dallas

I think he's nailed on tbh. Dallas plays in midfield most the time.

He didn't miss a game last season either played RB/RWB or filled in at RCB. He is also the captain if Cooper doesn't start.

Bielsa needs Dallas more in CM than FB/WB.

I think Firpo will be eased in. Whether that's subbed off early and limited mins coming on as a sub, I can see Dallas playing LB/LWB at some point in the opening fixtures

I thought Cooper was captain. Yeah hmm... I dunno.

With Alioski gone it's weird. I think Dallas goes back to LB.

Bielsa likes the back line to be able to adapt mid match between a 4 or a 5. Ayling is the one who drops in as the 3rd centre back.
      ....................Meslier
      Ayling Llorente Sturjik/Cooper Firpo
      .....................Phillips
      Raphinha Rodrigo/Klich Harrison
      .....................Bamford

      .........................Meslier
      ..........Ayling.....Llorente Sturjik/Cooper
      Dallas............... Phillips................... Firpo
      Raphinha...... Rodrigo/Klich ........Harrison
      ..........................Bamford

      Shape shifting.

Ayling doesn't need to play RCB when Leeds have all their CBs fit in Llorente, Struijk, Cooper and Koch

Bielsa won't ever start with three centre-backs on the pitch. Like I said, he likes to be flexible/adaptable midmatch that is why Ayling will drop in at times.

I've had Matt Targett in my team since 1st draft, but the Villa preview on ffhub suggests that his place may be threatened by Young. I'm pretty skeptical of this claim, but don't mind switching Villa defenders as they're in for decent CS potential at 5m rather than for their attacking upside. Who would you prefer to start: Targett, Cash, Mings, Konsa?

You know what yeah, I subscribed to FFHub last year (first time with them, 9 times with FFS), their analysis, quantity and quality just became absolute trash. You end up with so many opinions your team just becomes crap too.

Yeah, I'm thinking along the same lines as you mate. I'm a United fan and am worried if Ole brings in the big guns for the Leeds game, they will run us all over the pitch, you saw what happened last year with a lack of match fitness.

A team based on FPL Virgin's % stats article...
      Sanchez ....(Gunn)
      TAA, Robbo, Digne ....(White, Duffy)
      Salah(c), Son, Buendia, Raphinha ....(Poveda)
      Bamford, Antonio, Watkins

The bench is trash, however, this follows Lateriser's advise in the strong bench article yesterday.

Thing is, Man United's fixture swing for the worse takes place fairly soon after. Especially if United have a poor start (due to lack of match fitness) then you'll end up with a lot of players which need switching out. (Considering most have a combination of Bruno/Sancho/AWB/Shaw)

Advice is what it is. You can take a step further and copy teams based on it. Boring as far as I am concerned. My only interest is my ML. My overall performance is often tainted by me "covering" my adversaries. Psychological bias, stats that are based on history and not the future are impacting on so many players.

I've been tinkering for a few weeks.

0.5 ITB, Bowen fills the 6.5 mid slot until someone steps up in a few GW's. Can get through till GW 4-6 and then WC to get Kane and readjust to form players and new manager selections and tactics.

      Thoughts and critics much appreciated.

      Sanchez (Foster)
Targett, Wan-Bissaka, Coufal (Reguilon, Ait Nouri)
      Bowen, Fernandez, Salah, Mahrez (Bissouma)
      Watkins, Toney, Antonio

Might be my fault. I did a post on him yesterday. I like him but not more than Raphinha and probably not more than Buendia either. Might be worth a punt.

If WHU don't sign an attacking mid similar to Lingard last season then Bowen is a good pick at 6.5.

Is this the best back 4 from a FPL perspective?

      TAA Robbo Shaw Digne

      Who else is a contender?

Yes that would my back 4 if I went with 4 at the back. Maybe Cresswell/Coufal if Shaw is not fit or if I need 0.5m.

How’s the Villa and Leeds attacking double ups looking?

      Sanchez
      TAA Maguire Coufal
      Salah Bruno Buendia Harrison
      DCL Bamford Watkins

      (Gunnarsson Coady Bissouma Omobamidele)

Not sure about double up on both of them, Leeds have a few hard fixtures but have potential of scoring a few.

        Is Maguire nailed for GW1?

Pretty set on this team now. Going for a 3-4-3

      Henderson - (4.0)
      TAA - Targett - Digne - (White) - (Manquillo)
      Salah - Son - Mahrez - Harrison - (Brownhill)
      Watkins - DCL - Toney

0.5 ITB incase need to go Mahrez > Sancho

He has been on my watchlist since last season. One of the rare moments I went for a good player early. He is capable in the no 10 role so think about it. Son will be my pick GW3 no matter what outside of injury.

What do people think of this? Following a fairly template structure with a few differential picks:

      Sanchez
      TAA/Digne/Firpo
      Salah/KDB/Raphinha/Buendia
      Watkin/Wilson/Toney

      Bachmann, White, Bissouma, Ait-Nouri

I think Chillwell can easily hit 200 points if he's nailed in that Chelsea lineup sheet.
But Tuchel rotates way too much for my liking and i have pretty much no idea what to do with Chelsea assets atm.

I said he was good by that I mean 180ish which is amazing for a defender, 200+ for a defender is pushing it but I hope you are right !!

He's an attacking fullback playing for a team that are, under Tuchel, probably the best defensive team in the league. Chelsea defenders ended up as one of the best points per game defenders in the entire FPL, the only issue is the rotation.

I have a question regarding Son.
I like him as a player and feel he is a good asset, but maybe overpriced?

He has entrenched himself over the past 5-6 seasons in that 150-170 points per season player, with last season being the only exception with a fine return of 228. He did, however, play the most minutes last season then in the past 5 seasons.

There has been a lot of questions on TAA and if he is worth his current price tag, and he is also a player who has placed himself in that in that expected 150-170 points range.

My questions:...are my concerns over Son's minutes/price/returns reasonable?
Why is TAA considered a price risk?

      cheers

        Son is underpriced if anything.

He almost matched Salah and Bruno's points last season and he's 2M cheaper. If his form continbues, he'll be one of the most valueble points per million players in the game. The issue with Son is that in many FPL managers minds, he is not as strong of a captain option as the Kane/Salah/Bruno gang.

Missing all the npoise, I cannot think of a better option than Son outside of GW1. Even then I am not overly worried.
