The Scout Squad’s best FPL players for Gameweek 10

The best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards for Gameweek 10 are discussed by Fantasy Football Scout contributors Az, Sam, Neale and Tom.

For those new to this feature, it’s a weekly piece that always takes the form of a ‘Free Hit’-type selection for the upcoming Gameweek.

All of our panelists propose an 18-man long-list of Fantasy players, explaining their notable inclusions and omissions in the article below.

The Scout Squad also serves as a precursor to the Scout Picks, as the players listed will then be narrowed down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83.0m) for final our weekly selection.

Each writer must meet the following requirements:

  • At least one goalkeeper costing £5.0m or less
  • At least one sub-£5.0m defender
  • At least one midfielder listed at £6.5m or below
  • At least one forward priced at £7.0m or lower
  • No more than three players from the same club

AZ SAID

After a chaotic Gameweek 9, I’m not anticipating things slowing down this weekend, with in-form Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea all enjoying decent games on paper. Not that it seems to matter at this point, given the disparity between these clubs and the rest of the league this season.

I’m still favouring the premium defensive triple up of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joao Cancelo and Antonio Rudiger, and think it will be a tough ask for Brighton, Palace or Newcastle to breach these defences. Rudiger looks a certain starter after having some time off in midweek, and Tino Livramento is off the mark now, knocking on the door for a start for many of us FPL managers.

In midfield, I’ve adopted a similar strategy to my defensive picks with Mohamed Salah, Phil Foden and Kai Havertz my go-to options to tap into the attacks of the terrific trio. I’m also hoping Bryan Mbeumo can shake off his minor hamstring to be fit for Burnley, and I’m backing Spurs to pile more pressure on Olé Gunnar Solskjaer, with Son Heung-min the main man in attack.

Up front, I’ll be keeping my eye on the Jamie Vardy news – a lengthy lay-off and Patson Daka could be a superb differential given his recent form. I’m also backing the budget options in Joe Geldhart and Armando Broja, who have come into their respective sides and done a great job.

SAM SAID

Why Duffy was benched and Foden’s fine form: FPL notes from Brighton v Man City 7

With Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool all having great fixtures on paper this week, it makes sense to invest heavily in those teams. Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are essentials, in my view, so they make my picks alongside the Man CIty duo of Joao Cancelo and Phil Foden and a Chelsea triple-up of Edouard Mendy, Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount.

Outside of those games, Marcelo Bielsa seemed to suggest that Raphinha should be ok for the weekend and with Leeds playing Norwich, even though they are not in the best form themselves, he seems like a great option. With Patrick Bamford still out injured, Rodrigo up top could be a decent option, especially after his penalty goal last week. And given Norwich’s lack of attacking threat, Illan Meslier looks to be a great goalkeeper pick for Gameweek 10.

With David Raya out for four to five months and Alvaro Fernandez likely to make his Premier League debut, I have some concerns about Brentford’s clean sheet potential, therefore Maxwel Cornet could be a nice differential for the weekend.

With so much rumour and uncertainty around Manchester United at the moment, I am expecting both sides to be nervous at the weekend and that might just give Harry Kane the space he needs to attack well and turn his season around, so he makes my picks.

TOM SAID

The Rudiger injury latest as Lukaku's FPL appeal 3

Chelsea have now kept 17 Premier League clean sheets since Thomas Tuchel took charge, at least three more than any other side, and though it’s sometimes hard to pinpoint exactly which of their wing-backs will be handed successive starts, it feels like a risk worth taking given their points potential. This week, I’ve opted for Ben Chilwell, who has now scored in three successive league appearances for the Blues, and paired him with the excellent Edouard Mendy and Kai Havertz, who I’m tipping to deliver.

Meanwhile, Brentford have had an encouraging start to life in the Premier League and look a good team for bargain hunting this week. Their opponents Burnley have been poor so far and are still searching for their first win. As a result, they unsurprisingly rank 19th for expected goals (xG), and 17th for expected goals conceded (xGC). That leads me to Rico Henry at the back, plus Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney further forward, providing the former is passed fit of course.

Elsewhere, West Ham United supply two picks, Kurt Zouma and Michail Antonio, with Aston Villa’s ongoing issues defending set pieces in my thoughts. With that in mind, the last team you want to face is David Moyes’ Hammers, whose approach is largely based around crossing. Antonio will also ask plenty of questions of Tyrone Mings, having bagged his sixth Premier League goal of the campaign on Sunday.

After being completely outclassed by Liverpool in Gameweek 9, Manchester United will be low on confidence, especially defensively, which could be good news for Tottenham Hotspur duo Son Heung-min and Harry Kane this weekend. Both players struggled to make an impact last time out, but I think this match will be a more entertaining, open affair, as it was last season, with the attacking players benefitting most.

NEALE SAID

Just as FPL squads are starting to form around a core of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool assets, the Scout Picks will surely be doing similar for the foreseeable future.

State-the-bleeding-obvious selections from these clubs abound, as they have to if we’re honestly picking out who we think will excel in the upcoming Gameweek, but it’s worth perhaps explaining my own preference for Aymeric Laporte and Kai Havertz this time.

I’m again looking at opposition weaknesses here, with Crystal Palace actually a rather tight defensive unit other than possessing an Achilles heel at dead-ball situations. The match at Anfield was the perfect example of this, with all three of Liverpool’s goals coming from corners or free-kicks. In fact, the Eagles have the second-best expected goals conceded (xGC) from open play in 2021/22 – and the joint-worst xGC from set plays. Laporte, second among FPL defenders for shots in the box this season, gets my vote, although we could easily switch to Ruben Dias if the EFL Cup teamsheets suggest a benching for the Spain international on Saturday.

My selection of Havertz may have a whiff of “don’t back down, double down” about it after Gameweek 9 but Crystal Palace’s aerially mobile attacking spearhead, Christian Benteke, caused havoc among the Newcastle backline last week, racking up seven attempts – four of them from inside or just outside the six-yard box. The Magpies have conceded seven goals from fewer than six yards out this season and these are more Havertz areas than Mount territory, so I’m backing the much-maligned German despite his Norwich blank. Mount, incidentally, has only delivered one attacking return or fewer in 76 of his 80 Chelsea league appearances, so he tends not to make a habit of explosive hauls.

Brentford’s aerial dominance and Burnley’s surprising concession of multiple headed goal attempts (only Leicester have allowed more) leads me to the vertically talented double-up of Ivan Toney and Pontus Jansson, the latter of whom has had three big chances in just the last four Gameweeks.

Max Kilman has matched Romain Saiss for efforts in the box this season, meanwhile, so with Rafael Benitez’s zonal marking system exposed against Watford, and with Wolves much less gung-ho than they were at the season’s start, I’m edging towards a low-scoring home win at Molineux in the Monday night game. Rayan Ait-Nouri would be my preferred selection but with Marcal set to return from injury, there’s too much uncertainty at left wing-back.

The Hornets are still without a clean sheet in 2021/22, so I’ve gone with two possible routes into the Southampton attack in my picks. Armando Broja is grabbing all the headlines with his two goals in as many Gameweeks but his strike partner, the out of position Nathan Redmond, has racked up more shots and key passes (nine of each) in that time and also gets my nomination.

    WCed in GW8. Since then:

    1. Brought in Vardy and capped him over Salah in GW9. Flagged now.
    2. Brought in Christensen, Mbeumo, White(along with Vardy), who are all flagged.
    3. Sold Toney for 6.4(bought at 6.5). Has risen to 6.6 since.
    4. Replaced Toney with Armstrong.

Safe to say the WC has been a disaster so far.

My dude I feel your pain.

1.WC I brought in Lukaku, Rudiger, Azpulicueta. 2 getting injured and one not playing.
      2. Swapped Rudiger for Dias only to have him benched.
      3. Lukaku to Vardy, and went Vardy captain. Ouch.
      4. Went Saka over ESR and I'm sure you can see the latest on that. Also kept Sarr to see if he could bet me a few extra points beofee bad fixtures.

Man it hurt, was top of almost all my normal leagues now I'm down. Onward and upwards, - 12 point hit this week which I wouldn't normally justify but I need to make some swift changes. I'm happy looking at my team now. Worth the 12 point hit I hope but time will tell. Sometimes it's just not your lucky day. But we have to remember it's only a game. 🙂

Why do you think Chilwell is a rotation monger? He sat out first 6 games and has played every minute since.

Don't get me wrong - I bought him myself this week, but my bench this week is Livra, Sarr and ESR.
I don't see Alonso disappearing into Carabao wasteland although Chilli will play the majority.

Afraid I have to agree with this. I've has Foden a few weeks but can still see him getting rotated here and there (although I will say I do think he's a slightly exceptional case with Pep, if you look at his minutes and starts under Pep they've steadily grown and grown each season), Chilwell is on a good run but Tuchel seems to have a tendency to do this with some players and then drop them again for a short while), and Davis, I dunno, start of the season it's fine and if you haven't needed your third sub so far that's good but I think you've been quite lucky if so looking at what's happened at least twice or thrice to a lot of people already this season (myself included). But it's an aggressive move for players with high ceilings so it may work out.

I don’t know why he is not mentioned. Cheap and bringing in points. Had him a week or 2 and should have got him earlier. Will usually be first bench for me but I may start him some weeks and with my risky team he probably comes off the bench most weeks anyway. Different player this year in reality and FPL.

I’m tempted to bring him in either next week or the one after. Need an eventual replacement for CHO and Kovacic has been ticking over nicely. Just not sure if now is the best time to bring him in with all the fixtures coming up thick and fast, who knows how much he’ll be rotated. ESR the only real alternative in the price range, especially if you’re like me and have Mbuemo

Not necessarily, although I was looking to put the extra funds towards upgrading Duffy to someone like Coufal/Target/Reguilon or basically anyone around that price. But just means I’ll probably have to bring in someone cheaper like Lowton/Dier and rotate them as 3rd defender as they both have some nice fixtures coming up, and I want to drop Duffy soon anyways as I think his minutes will diminish. But that’s just looking ahead and a lot can change of course

My current thoughts are to upgrade Duffy soon too - go with a little more rotation risk in the back with upside.
Not needing the second premium really helps fund some punts.

Similar thinking here, already have 4 pretty nailed defenders so happy to take a risk with hopefully an attacking fullback with nice fixtures. Will just come down to funds, that’s why Reguilon has caught my eye for his fixtures from week 12, similarly Coufal with his nice fixtures around Christmas. Will even monitor Cucurella. Unfortunately can’t afford any Chelsea defender other than Chalobah myself but I still think they’re great value

Where do you rank Tielemans compared to the more attacking Trossard/Bowen? I’m looking at Tielemans from next week and he’s been doing well so far but just worried about him not getting forward as much as some others but if he keeps assisting and scoring the odd goal…

The goals he scores tend to be worldies, so don't bank on more, but he'll get assists. The main plus for me is he's nailed and plays for a team that got off to a slow start, but from now on will probably bag more points than Hammers or any other non-top 3 side.
Bowen will be a rotation risk and Brighton will fade, for me.

Appreciate the response, that’s pretty much my thinking also, he won’t score goals like he did last week every week but if he keeps up the assists he’ll be a nice asset. I have Vardy already so if I bring him in there’d be a double up, but I don’t mind that. I’m just not fully convinced with someone like Trossard even though I’ve hesrd he’s oop a bit and Fornals/Bowen who are probably underperforming. Will watch Cornet though as well

Cornet is interesting. My issue is he plays for a bad side. I've already made such a mis-step with Sarr and will sell him for Mbuemo next week unless Vardy is out for too long. I do think that whilst Foxes are dodgy at the back, their attack is starting to purr, and T should be part of that (if not at its head).

Looking at his game log, there’s been games even as recently as against Man United 2 gw’s ago where Tielemans took off 4 shots and 3 key passes, only 1 shot off his season high of 5 which he managed twice this season already. Leicester being poor atm and therefor attack dependent works well for Tielemans. Cornet I think is still slightly early for him, just as people probably jumped on Sarr a little early, I guess though Watford seem more likely to score than Burnley and you know Sarr is a nailed starter but Cornet seems at this stage like a guy you have to be lucky to catch his points. Sarr might find new life under the new coach yet though

I did popped this question regarding kovacic few days back. Was told there are kante and jorginho in the frame for the position he is playing. Maybe injury problems have helped his case, but once kante is back he might not be so nailed. But he have been doing great recently. In the end i had chose to get in tielemans instead

I think that was me. Since then Saul played 90 mins on Tuesday in the Carabao and is maybe getting up to PL pace, so there's even more competition in that double pivot. I'd say long term Tielemans is the better prospect.

If you have him I’d hold. This is the purple patch of his fpl existence. Kind of like Gundo last year, he’s hot and getting returns no reason to transfer him out until he cools down or starts getting rotated frequently.

Agree with this. Personally I think he's in a very different role to last year and he's excelling, he's shown the ability in years gone by at Madrid and Inter but never had consistency, but Tuchel has managed to get it out of him and I think he's very capable of keeping this form up. He's actively looking for those through balls to the forwards and wide men in every game and is taking on players regularly too which gets him into shooting positions and better assisting positions a lot. Thing with Tuchel is that he has a tendency to go from this to nearly dropping a player enjoying such a good spell in one fell swoop if they have even just one bad game which is what has been putting me off but I'm not sure how much longer I can avoid taking that chance on him. I'm hoping to save my FT this week and will see next week how I feel myself on the move.

How did alvaro fernandez played last night in goal for brentford? I am still thinking whether to get him or sanchez to replace raya. Used my 2 ft to get meslier + sarr > raya + tielemans. Not sure if i should get a -4 to replace raya. And with sanchez facing liverpool this week, i might just wait. Short of 0.2 to get meslier back and thinking of fernandez as an option too

That's rotten luck getting Raya in and then having him get that long term injury.

No idea on his replacement - I have Ramsdale - who is fine. But not someone I'd be working hard to get.

I just read the BBC match report and they didn't comment on the new keeper. He conceded a consolation goal but I have no idea about the context.

McCarthy at 4.5 is good for the next 3 if you need a quick fix. I've had Sanchez since GW1 and intend to stick with him )I intended to sell him for Raya but "luckily" Lukaku got injured!).

    TAA, Chilwell, Cancelo, Livramento, Rudiger.
    Salah, Raphinha,
    Vardy, Jimenez, Antonio.
    Bachmann, Gray, Benrahma, Bissouma.

    WC squad (potential)
    Sanchez, Carson*.
    TAA, Chilwell, Cancelo, Livramento, James*.
    Salah, Son*, Foden*, Jota*, Kovacic*.

if brentford lost to burnley this week would that put you off getting Hernandez?
i think you can wait a week to see.
no obvious moves but sanchez run is decent post liverpool as is guiata post city
feels like it's better to give it a week for more info
better to take a hit for keeper where its likely they'll keep cs in that week...

That's a meaningless question. Suppose he concedes from a penalty after making a dozen world-class saves. You can't make decisions with no context.

Well on the flip side they could concede loads of chances but he saves a penalty, doesn’t mean he’s a must buy.
Was more eluding to the fact you can wait a week but if they conceded a few it might give doubt whether to go elsewhere

    Ram Foster
    TAA Cancelo James Duffy Liv
    Salah Foden Raph* Mbeumo* Normann

Almost identical to my squad, so I like it!
I have gone with Chilwell and will go 4 at the back most weeks. Like yours, I'm set up to withstand all these surprise injuries and rotation.
Personally, I'd wait on news to see if Vardy is out, or out for longer than one match. I'm also waiting for Antonio to drop off and consider replacing him, so I'd be inclined to roll your transfer if nothing comes up, in case you want to make a double-change next week.

Who are you looking at as an Antonio replacement? Not many forward options stand out at the moment apart from Vardy

        Ronaldo- United are a mess
        DCL Bamford Lukaku Werner-Injured
Toney- Always looks a threat but haven't yet delivered consistently
        Jesus/Firmino- Are they nailed?
Hwang- clinical from low shot volume. can he keep it up

Auba Nacho Wilson Broja Ings all punts at best

The options aren't great at the mo. I can see me wanting to get rid of Vardy and Antonio in the near future (also have Toney). Options at the moment are Wilson, Nacho/Daka, Hwang, Broja. All punts right now yes, but I'm looking 2-3 games hence and further. I could go one of the cheapest and get Ronaldo back after GW14ish IF United rediscover their mojo. Bamford could also be back and firing.

I never just fixate on the next fixture. I'm very well set up for now - as TorresM is - but I'm looking further ahead in case players I own cease functioning.

“Jamie’s fine,” Rodgers said on Wednesday evening, after City’s Carabao Cup shoot-out success against Brighton.

“He trained this morning (Wednesday) and joined back in the group. All the guys are fine.”

Vardy watched City’s match against Brighton from the stands at the King Power Stadium, alongside other players not involved in the squad, including Jonny Evans, Ayoze Perez, and James Justin.

        Thanks. Options?
Counter thought: Ings is on Penalties and have decent run of fixtures ahead.

Thanks. Should I sacrifice Ings before Greenwood?

Maybe no need for double Chelsea unless that's your play?

Greenwood to Townsend/Gray/Mbeumo/ESR and then Azpi to TAA

or Semedo to TAA if you can afford that

Greenwood to TAA matches, Semedo to a decent MF is the issue. Already have Allan in that slot.

Thanks. Yes this is what I'm inclined to if Raphinha is fit.
