Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 12

Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini-league winner Les Caldwell.

“Life is like a game, there are many players. If you don’t play with them, they’ll play with you.”

The FPL Squid Games continued with Dean Smith, Steve Bruce, Nuno Espirito Santo and Daniel Farke losing the managerial tug of war, a red light not a green light for our Brentford players and owners of Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) losing their marbles with his sending off.

In all the excitement, we have a new front man for The Great and The Good in Az, whilst others faced elimination due to VIP party spoilers Norwich and Burnley but who will be contestant number 456 and win the pig filled with cash?

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Az was the secret inspector in Gameweek 11 with an impressive 75 points which sees him reach the top of the table, thanks to an impressive defensive performance from the fabulous threesome of Joao Cancelo (£6.4m), Reece James (£5.9m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m).

The Blackbox host has also been canny in his purchase of Arsenal assets with Aaron Ramsdale (£4.7m) and Emile Smith-Rowe (£5.8m) delivering for him yet again, entering the top 10k for the first time this season.

Joe also scored a creditable 70 with his faith in Adam Armstrong (£5.9m) paying off, Geoff Dance was only a point behind thanks to his smart purchase of Conor Gallagher (£5.8m) – now the fifth-highest point scorer this season – and Yavuz is making a comeback by moving up 139,000 places. Could an eighth successive top 10k finish still be on?

A new game was introduced this week called ‘Bench Bother’, as members of The Great and The Good competed to leave as many points on the bench as possible, with an average of 18.1 between them.

FPL Matthew and FPL General shared the dishonour with 26 benched points as messers Ben Foster (£4.0m), Ben White (£4.4m) and Tino Livramento (£4.5m) ended up doing just fine whilst on their pine.

TRANSFERS

This is a summary of the transfers for this week :

Az – None

LTFPL Andy – None

Fabio Borges – Sanchez (Raya)

Joe Lepper – Chilwell (Christensen)

Geoff Dance – Toney, James (Antonio, Tierney)

FPL General – Son, White (Dias, Mount)

Les Caldwell – Smith-Rowe, Alexander-Arnold (Son, Alonso)

Magnus Carlsen – Toney (Antonio)

Mark Sutherns – None

FPL Matthew – None

Neale Rigg – None

Tom Freeman – Sanchez (Raya)

Tom Stephenson – Jota (Raphinha)

Yavuz Kabuk – None

Zophar – Jota (Raphinha)

The variance went against Tom Freeman and Fabio Borges who picked the wrong week to make a goalkeeper change, as Sanchez proved to be less than a safe pair of fans with his sending off, just as they brought him in for an injured David Raya (£4.5m).

Elsewhere, Les Caldwell continues his uncanny knack of timing his moves as he brought in the double-barrelled double-digit scoring Smith-Rowe and Alexander-Arnold.

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows with number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:-

Foster (11), Ramsdale/Sanchez (6)

Alexander-Arnold (14), Cancelo (13), Livramento (12), Rudiger/Chilwell/James (5)

Salah (15), Raphinha (12), Foden (10), Mbeumo (10), Brownhill (7)

Antonio (13), Toney (11), Vardy (10)

Some small tweaks to the template, with three Chelsea defenders scrapping it out for the fourth and fifth spot, Sanchez comes in but will probably go out again and it’s worth noting that the template forward line failed to score this weekend.

KING OF THE TRANSFER

A deep dive this week into the season transfer activity of The Great and The Good, showing not only the immediate success of the transfers but also the spread across their squads:

Andy and Magnus lead the way with some high-impact transfers, gaining 64 and 63 points respectively with their moves. We’ll move swiftly past how Mark’s trades have performed so far.

Midfield appears to be this season’s battleground for making advances in the rankings, as 40% of all moves have been in this position.

Defensive moves are of a similar number to forward switches and the importance of getting your back line right is backed up by the stat that three of the top five total scorers this campaign are defenders in the form of James, Alexander-Arnold and Cancelo.

CONCLUSION

A break for us, away from the FPL struggle, as we enter our final international break before entering the hectic festive season.

Already we have seen the requirement for a strong bench, as well as Salah’s domination of the captaincy debate leading to more funds being available elsewhere.

The rotation will only get worse, so best prepare and build your squads. However, also brace yourself for more lost points as there will undoubtedly be a high chance that the added squad depth will cause pain.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now and, remember, don’t have nightmares.

For those affected by any of the topics raised in the above article then you can find me here on Twitter.

    TAA Cancelo Reguilon (Livramento Duffy)

Pretty even so far I think. Both points might dip if their attacking colleagues get more attacking returns.

    Great stuff, Greyhead!

Interesting to see the massive difference between Andy and Mark in immediate points gained from transfers. As it turned out, Mark's infamous Match of the Day stream transfer eventually came out decent, at +15 over its lifetime after starting with -26 including the hit in the week it was made. By my Points Gained over the Lifetime of a Transfer metric, Mark is currently on 29 points gained, only 12 fewer than Andy. Unfortunately, I don't have time to track all 15 managers, but will take a look at the data on Mark, Andy, and myself once we are past mid-season.

    Hey all,
Would appreciate some advice before price changes effect my moves.

Starting Team is for GW12 is:

    Foster
    Rudiger, Chill, Cancelo
    Salah, Son, Ralph, Townsend
    Hwang, Vardy, Antonio
    Subs: Sanchez, D.Luiz, Duffy, Manq

    2FT & 2.2 ITB

    Considering these moves:
    Rudiger ————-> TAA
    Townsend ———-> Gallagher
    Or
    Rudiger —————> James
    Townsend ————-> Jota
    Or any other recommendations

My WC team is very template but is there anything you'd change:

    Kane Wilson (Broja)

Template at the back but you can't knock it. Don't like the front line, Wilson will get injured soon no doubt and Broja is a rotation risk. Raph to Gallagher and spend a little more upfront maybe.

B easy, mainly coz of Kane's great fixtures and Antonio's tough one's and I like the idea of going early on Kane. Also gives you an easy route to Ronaldo or Lukaku.

A has the potential to explode, whereas B relies on Kane getting his a*se in gear, although if he doesn't you've got an easy shift to CR7, who has some great fixtures coming up as well.

I don't think I even understand what people mean by "overthinking" in this game. With Mark's most infamous transfers featured on the MOTD BlackBox, he made those on a Monday, days in advance of the deadline. He hadn't had time to overthink them in the sense of someone who agonises over transfers all week, and finally after days of thinking, is forced to make a decision a few minutes before the deadline. If this is the meaning, then Mark can only be said to have been underthinking by following his gut and making the transfers so early.

I suspect what a lot of people mean by "overthinking" is just going against the template, as if the default move is just the template move, and you'd have to "overthink" to go a different direction. As if not thinking at all, and just automatically doing what everyone on Twitter is doing, is the ideal.

Do we know for sure that Firmino will be out for a long period. Because if he returns 1 or 2 GW after the IB than probably it's not gonna worth it.

            https://www.footballinsider247.com/liverpool-star-firmino-out-for-six-weeks-after-klopp-reveal-injury-expert/

According to this article he can be out for up to 6 weeks, so maybe transferring in Jota is not a bad idea. I really wanted to keep Mount, and replace someone else because after I transfer him in for -4 he gave me 0 and 1 pts... But after all maybe Mount to Jota for free transfer is the way to go..

Cheers - I am torn between mount to jota or mount & Jesus to son & pukki

Why did you choose Pukki and not Hwang? 🙂 You probably already have Hwang and in that situation you can pick up Broja. And I am really not sure about the Jesus move. City has a good run of fixtures and he seems like a nailed option (as long as you can be nailed with Pep roulette).

Already got hwang and pukki got manager bounce plus ok fixtures. Jesus frustrating to own.

Yeah, I can understand you with Jesus situation. The Man City goals are pretty split between all the attacking players.. Foden and BSilva are probably the best picks from City. Pukki may be a good pick with that manager replacement and not bad run of fixtures + you can bench him easily due to his price 🙂 You can consider the Broja option too 🙂

I really like this line up. You are a little light upfront but a strong team overall

I think the next 10 gws call for a team of 15 starters, nicely done...

Thoughts as Callum Wilson as an option going forward? Reunited with Howe. Also Fraser and Ritchie there too. Bournemouth created a lot of chances when they were all together.

I would get him on WC or for free, but I am having difficulties with my team structure if I want CR7 when fixtures swing. And Jota and Foden are also on my shopping list. He is not worth a hit imo and is also short term option. If I could afford Toney to Wilson for free, I would. Jesus or Antonio injury might make consider -4 to get him and Foden/Jota.

Who scores more at the end of the season? KDB or Jota?

KDB, though current form isn't good.

Jota. Pure guess based on KdB being somewhat injury prone.

    What to do here guys?

    Sanchez*, Foster
    TAA, Rudiger, Cancelo, Veltman, Tsimikas
    Salah, Havertz, Raphinha, Gallagher, Sissoko
    Vardy, Antonio, Toney

    £1.7m ITB
    2FT

    Best replacement for Sanchez?

Raphinha would be projected to score more...but you bench Livramento at your own risk

I am starting Livra over Raphinha now. Haven't checked the calculations yet, but have a feeling that there is something wrong with Livramento's projected points on member's area.

Sou has about 32-33% chance for CS, so that alone would mean about 3.3 projected pts for Livra. Add his attacking potential vs Nor and possible baps + reduce YC and RC risk.

Hopefully I’m not breaching any member conditions here by sharing that Raph wins that projection by 3.7 to 3. I’m sharing that partly as I have the same misgiving as Baps Hunter about Livra’s projections. That 3 is actually his highest for the next 6 games - something seems off
