Chelsea v Man Utd team news: Alonso starts as Mount, Havertz and Ronaldo benched

In the final match of Gameweek 13, Chelsea take on Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, with Fantasy interest mostly centred around the hosts backline.

Kick-off is at 16:30 BST.

Chelsea, who have conceded just four goals in 12 league matches this season, make four changes from Gameweek 12, with Marcos Alonso (£5.6m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.4m), Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) and Timo Werner (£8.6m) replacing Ben Chilwell (£5.9m), N’Golo Kante (£4.9m), Mason Mount (£7.5m) and Kai Havertz (£8.0m).

That means another start for Reece James (£6.2m), who has four goals and four assists from nine Premier League appearances this term, plus Trevor Chalobah (£4.8m). As a result, Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.8m) is once again a substitute, along with Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) who is back from injury.

The headline news for Man Utd, who will have Michael Carrick in the dugout, is that Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m) drops to the bench with Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m), Jadon Sancho (£8.9m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.4m) preferred in the attacking roles.

GAMEWEEK 13 LINE-UPS

Has anyone ever analyzed (or know of an analysis of) what point benefit (if any) that £1 of team value invested somewhere in the outfield players might typically provide (yes I know that nothing is really typical in a complex game like FPL) over say 10 game weeks as opposed to investing that £1 in the keeper pair? I know that a cheap keeper pair (4.5 or 5.0+4.0) is popular vs premium keeper pair (5.5 or 6.0+4.0 or 4.5+5.0), but I was curious if this was actually the best strategy. Thinking of having some fun over Christmas (and with the possibility of match postponements such as what happened today) to put that £1 into a playing premium rotating pair just under £10 (Sa+Ramsdale), since Sa has a few poor fixtures in the next 10 GWs but some good as well, and I don’t want to get rid since I like that he is a differential. Likely will bail on this strategy before letting it run its full 10 GW course when it all goes wrong, but I’m curious enough to try I think.

This has proven to be very difficult. Keepers often haul in tougher matches when you probably would bench them. They also are likely to get more saves, when opponent is better. Therefore calculating it is very difficult.

I know many are going Alonso on here, and rightly so, but I would rather go Rudiger. Alonso was not as good by any stretch in that game and I won't be surprised to see Azpili getting some games along the way.

They played vs MU. Alonso also gave a lot of corners and when Lukaku is back, I expect Chelsea to score from them. Narurally it may be Rudiger who scores. Alonso is proven fpl asset and is a steal now imho.

Historically Alonso has been a "must own", was it RAM? Robbo, Alonso and Mendy(?) He has looked good, at least in fpl terms earlier this season, so I wouldn't base my decision on today's performance. Eye test is good sometimes, but one match is simply too small sample size.

Alonso has also slightly better ppm stat and he is 0.4 cheaper. Yes, there is a case for Rudiger, but I expect Alonso to overscore him. He looked a bit rusty today, that is correct, but it was only one match and I expect him to improve his game.

I think Ronaldo has almost become a scapegoat. 6 goals in 5 CL games for a 36 year old? They’d be out of the CL if he wasn’t there. He’s still their best attacking player.

People also forget Man United weren’t playing very well before he arrived. They could have easily lost against Southampton and Wolves in gw2/3. Last season, they were getting extremely lucky in a lot of games and so many penalties.

For a 36 year old? That says it all! This was not a long-term signing but a win-now signing. United had been slowly improving with youngish players over the last few years. They were developing a style of play which changed when Ronaldo came back.

Is it Ronaldo's fault? I don't think so but I don't think they should have signed him. They just couldn't have him go to City

        1. Qaiss
          • 8 Years

He wouldn’t have gone to City. He cares about his image. Pep has said Messi is the GOAT numerous times.

As I said, he’s still their best attacking player. It’ll be funny when him and Rangnick get along really well and he’s scoring lots of goals, considering there’s all this debate about whether he’ll get dropped.

I don't deny at all that he's their best attacking player but in this day and age is that enough? He may well start banging in the goals but at what loss?

Ronaldo has dragged us through the CL & we’d be in the bottom half without him.
So what if he isn’t naturally a presser of the ball.
Man Utd don’t press as a team anyway, so he’d be wasting his energy if he did.
With a proper system in place, I can very much see Ronnie pulling his weight and continuing to score important goals

What is that proper system though? Other teams have players that are equally as talented as a 36yr old Ronaldo who can also run all day!

You don't understand Man United and if you think that signing Ronaldo was bad, even more so if you say they should have let him go to Man City.

I never said that they should have let him sign for City and I don't need to understand Man United to see what's going on.

I misread that bit about City, my apologies.

But still totally disagree with you, I don't even understand what the logic of this bit is:

"I don't deny at all that he's their best attacking player but in this day and age is that enough? He may well start banging in the goals but at what loss?"

So he's their best player, and can bang in goals, but in this 'day and age' ... eh?

Not all teams want to run all day...we almost make it sound like United are a pressing team, they aren't. If a United striker decides to run all day,he won't need to be advised to stop.

But, I would say, United did press today – definitely. And this may well now be the style under Rangnik. Perhaps he'd already got that message across (don't know)

Possible...Rangnick is supposed to be big on pressing. I actually think Ronaldo will adapt,he'll actually be the greatest beneficiary, loose balls into Ronaldo around the area will result in goals

This is just a convenient rhetoric for pundits,in my opinion. I haven't seen any United attacker(apart from cavani) that actually presses...martial? Rash? Greenwood?

I agree entirely, it's an easy opinion to trot out when you have an entire hour to fill post-match

Pressing is taught through coaching. Knowing when and how to press is learnt on the training ground. All the players need is fitness and half a brain!

The point I'm making is United by choice don't usually press with/without Ronaldo

When was the last time a non-pressing team has won the Champion's league. In the premier league it was Leicester. That's why Jose has been found out as he couldn't adapt to a new style of play and his type of football is outdated.

Madrid weren't a pressing team though I get your point. However, Ronaldo isn't responsible for the system United play. Also,I do not believe any type of football is outdated, the coach and personnel matters a lot. All systems have their flaws,I believe.

Fair enough, before Ronaldo came, United played with a lot more energy and on the counter-attack, the last few months they haven't had any style really. I'm a strong believer in pressing from the front. I also believe that Jose's man management approach is outdated too

As a Jesus and Cancelo owner I should not have watched the highlights. Jesus cleared off the line twice and should that have been his assist or last there a touch on it? Hi

Looks like Gundogans aura touched the ball so they were like eh let's just give it to him

Yeah but it was Jesus assist I know the rules different for FPL but whether he gets a Knick on it or not it doesn’t even change the ball direction would have been a goal either way from the assist.
