FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: James injury latest and budget Dennis delivers again

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Wednesday’s Gameweek 14 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes for this midweek round of action.

INJURIES AND BANS

It was a punishing night on the injury front; no coincidence, perhaps, with the games coming thick and fast and the risk of muscle problems increased as a consequence.

Aside from Kevin De Bruyne, whose absence was expected at Villa Park, three other Manchester City players didn’t even make the matchday squad. Ilkay Gundogan, John Stones and Kyle Walker all missed out with previously undeclared “niggles”, with Pep Guardiola unsure when speaking after the match whether that trio would be fit for Gameweek 15:

“Yesterday the doctor come and say this player cannot play and after another and this morning the doctor said Gundogan couldn’t play. Aymer [Laporte] was suspended but will be back. Kevin had just two training sessions but is coming back. It is important for us as many players as possible. They have to compete with these guys, they were exceptional.

“I don’t know [if they will face Watford]. Normally I’m not like this, they are not there, I would prefer it, absolutely.” – Pep Guardiola

Phil Foden was an unused substitute on his return from injury, while the newly fit-again Jack Grealish had a brief cameo off the bench on his own comeback.

Jorginho and Timo Werner were also fit enough for bench duty at Vicarage Road but Reece James didn’t make the trip. Thomas Tuchel may have been about to tell us that the right-back had a chance to face West Ham at the weekend but the Chelsea boss was annoyingly interrupted by the same reporter who posed him the initial question.

“I cannot say today, it was like yesterday, too much pain for him to travel for us and to play. Hopefully, we have a chance that he’s back on… [answer interrupted by another question on the nature of the injury]… he got a kick on the ankle” – Thomas Tuchel on Reece James’s chances of featuring in Gameweek 15

Chelsea also lost Trevoh Chalobah to a hamstring injury in the second half of the win over Watford.

“The next game is coming on Saturday and I am most worried about the injury to Trevoh. We got a lot of hits today. The doctor was on the field 20 times to treat players. It is a big loss with Trevoh and we have already some injured key players so I am a bit worried because the next game is Saturday at 12.30.” – Thomas Tuchel

The Hornets themselves saw Adam Masina limp off with a muscle problem that looks set to keep him out for a while.

“I think it’s serious because he was already operating these muscles. think I will miss him for a long time.” – Claudio Ranieri on Adam Masina

There weren’t many teams to emerge from Wednesday night unscathed.

Aston Villa lost Leon Bailey to a muscle issue that will very likely keep him out for weeks but the prognosis sounds positive on Matt Targett‘s head injury, at least.

“We’ll have to analyse [Bailey’s injury] with an MRI scan in the coming days but it looks like he’s going to miss at least a few weeks I think Matty will pull through, he’s had a bang but coming off the pitch he tells me that he should be OK. But you can’t take risks when it’s that area of the head.” – Steven Gerrard

Jan Bednarek and Salomon Rondon also picked up problems for Southampton and Everton respectively.

“He felt his hamstring so we need to wait to see what the physios are saying.” – Rafael Benitez on Salomon Rondon

“Hopefully he is okay. I hope that he stepped out just in time so that the problem did not become an injury.” – Bednarek

Marcal was absent from Wolves’ goalless draw with Burnley after testing positive for Covid-19, while the worst-hit side of the night were Brighton: they lost Adam Lallana, Jeremy Sarmiento and Adam Webster to muscle strains that left them down to 10 men in the closing stages of their draw with West Ham United.

“At the moment it doesn’t look like [they’ll be fit for] the weekend.” – Graham Potter on his injured trio

GAMEWEEK 14 TAKEAWAYS

DENNIS DELIVERS AGAIN

As Michail Antonio was delivering a fifth straight blank in West Ham’s draw with Brighton, Emmanuel Dennis was overtaking him in the FPL points chart.

The fixture and the 50% flag meant that he was benched by almost 90% of his owners in the top 10k but the Nigerian recovered to play 90 minutes at Vicarage Road, making it nine attacking returns in five appearances with a clean sheet-busting goal for the Hornets.

He now trails only Jamie Vardy for points among FPL forwards and from Gameweek 16-23, Watford move to the top of our Season Ticker.

It should be said that he is massively exceeding his expected goal involvement (xGI) this season (by 7.35!), while he has been named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, which could see him miss a handful of Gameweeks.

But with so few other forwards making a case for inclusion, the question does have to be asked as to why we wouldn’t simply recruit a bargain-bin Watford striker and splash the cash elsewhere, at least while the more expensive forward options are trying to play themselves into some sort of form.

TUCHEL ON ALONSO

It was a disappointing night all round for those going big at the back, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all losing their clean sheets.

Marcos Alonso ‘assisted the assister’ for both of the Blues’ goals and a frustrating evening for owners was compounded when he was booked.

There were some quotes of note on the wing-back emerging from Thomas Tuchel after the game, when the hapless Saul Niguez was brought up as a topic of conversation.

“He was on a yellow card so we had two options – take Marcos [Alonso] off who also had a yellow card and try Saul as a wing-back. I had this in my mind before the game, if something happened to Marcos. I thought maybe it was not the right match to try things with new positions so it was him to change the shape a little bit and have Thiago on the pitch with his organising.” – Thomas Tuchel on Saul Niguez

TIME TO SELL WOLVES PLAYERS

Wolves drew a blank for the second match running and the last two Gameweeks have been a bit of a damp squib for owners of Raul Jimenez and Hwang Hee-chan, who would have hoped for greater things against two of the division’s weakest defences.

Bruno Lage’s troops now face some daunting-looking fixtures all the way through to the New Year, so Gameweek 15 looks to be a good hopping-off point.

 1

‘UNDROPPABLE’ BERNARDO

Bernardo Silva made it five attacking returns in seven Gameweeks with a goal in Manchester City’s win over Aston Villa.

With fitness concerns dogging Pep Guardiola’s squad, Bernardo has started 13 league matches in a row and is now City’s leading-scoring FPL midfielder.

With Grealish and Foden back to fitness, and De Bruyne and Gundogan not far away, the Portuguese may be due a breather soon – although it was only two weeks ago that he was deemed ‘undroppable’ by his manager.

“You cannot compete a long season without players. The moments Rodri and Bernardo play lately is too much. In six years, I never complain because the players are not here.

“I had 12 players today. If you think I complain because players are not here, it’s not going to happen. They have to recover quickly and compete against these guys who were so strong today.” – Pep Guardiola

EVERTON AND LEICESTER DEFENCES STILL ONES TO TARGET

Mohamed Salah continued his superlative form in the Merseyside derby, while Diogo Jota made it four goals in three matches in Liverpool’s ultimately comfortable 4-1 win over Everton.

The Toffees may not show up as dark shades of blue on our Season Ticker but they are a defence to target at present: 15 goals have flown in over their last six matches, with a league-worst total of 22 big chances conceded an unwanted record.

The same could be said for Leicester, who are still without a clean sheet since Gameweek 1.

In eight of their last 10 matches, the Foxes have conceded two or more goals – including in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Southampton.

I would be inclined to agree. I have held him too but I look at those fixtures ahead and you just know he's going to come good.

I'm thinking of a quick switch to Ollie Watkins from Antonio, but your plan seems solid. Dennis just can't keep this up sureky though, but great price.

He's over-performing his xG by an insane value that's higher than peak Messi

Just like Cornet and Hwang earlier this season

This trend tends to burn out, but he's still a great asset regardless. I bought him, but I'm aware of this fact

Need to make a transfer or will use it but also want to keep Raph/Kane for one more fixture.. only options really are as follows, both of which free up some cash for Raph > e.g. Bilva and keeping option open for Kane > Ronaldo

      A. Antonio > one of Watkins/Toney/King/Dennis

      B. Alonso > Reguilon/another cheaper defender to free up cash for Raph > Bilva

I really expect Cancelo to be rested next week. So I would downgrade only Antonio to Dennis and get Cancelo next week for free for Livra. Chances are that you can downgrade one injured or ill player then.

He blanked against Everton and Leeds, they were really good fixtures too. The way Spurs are playing the likes of Brighton and Palace will play them off the park, their midfield isn't able to cope with any side that likes to be on the ball and control possession and can penetrate with passes from midfield, really the only fixtures after Norwich that look good to me are Leicester and Watford. Southampton are hard to predict but are capable of shutting out teams (especially one lacking in creativity like Spurs), same for Arsenal. Sure if Spurs suddenly start playing some exceptional football then a lot of those games look better, but they can't really do that with the players they have right now.

Son to Kane is frying pan to fire

Don't sell Son before Norwich, but almost immediately after. Don't buy Spurs either

Yeah rotation can be a problem,
I dont except them to play every game.
Going for Kane and week after for Ronaldo can be good source of points, but with Salah in such form not sure if I would captain any of them

Kane: team problem, not creating anything for him

Ronaldo: possible coach + fixture congestion problems, as the new coach loves the high press

I've given up on premium strikers until Lukaku in GW28

Thinking of this for the long run: Jesus Antonio DCL

I actually don't think I'll drop any of them for Ronaldo et al, except if he's absolutely nailed

B looks far better to me, I'm completing the triple-up on City this weekend myself. Fixtures are excellent and they're playing some great football. There will be rotation but that will happen at all clubs, and honestly City have been pretty settled in terms of line-ups for most of the season (apart from injury-enforced changes)

      Dias vs Alonso

Looking to upgrade Duffy this week and trying to decide between Dias VS Alonso.

Alonso(5.7) cheaper and offers much more attacking threat BUT looking at Chelsea's fixtures and the new announced BGWs in 24/25 I feel like Dias is the safer and smarter move.

Chelsea with a tough fixture vs WHU this weekend followed by 5 decent fixtures. In GW 21 we see a big fixture swing into 3 tough GWs and 2 blanks. GW 21 I would be looking to drop the Chelsea double up, giving the Alonso move just 6 GWs to pay off.

Dias(6.0) on the other hand is a tad more expensive and offers less attacking threat but I do believe CIty is the better defense. City have a sea of green fixtures for the foreseeable future. I would be happy to hold for the rest of the season or at least until the second WC as things stand.

Just weighing up my options this week and would like to know what others think of the two players. I am edging toward Dias as it saves me future transfers but I will definitely be hiding behind a big sofa anytime Alonso gets forwards in the coming weeks.

Cheers and goodluck with the rest of the season everyone!

Dias probably the safer, reliable and will probably score more over the long term but fpl is no fun without players like Alonso.

        1. Dias is more likely to rotate than Alonso. He's now slightly competing with the recovering Stones, weirdly enough

        2. Alonso has the higher attack threat, by some distance

        3. Were you considering Dias over Alonso before his rare goal last night?

        4. Alonso was involved in both Chelsea goals last night, passing the ball to both players who got assists

        5. Dias blocks a second City attacker (Foden, Jesus, Bilva) with fixtures where they can haul going all the way to GW27

        6. Selling Chelsea defenders around GW21 isn't difficult. It'll be the template move, and there are easy replacements with good fixtures by that time: Johnson/Cresswell, Pereira, Robertson, Lamptey

        1. Pops15

1.Yes that's unfortunate compared to last season where he seemed nailed for every game. Still not entirely convinced that Alonso will not rotate with an Azpi or CHO one game.

          3. No, like a casual it put him back on my radar. Lots of hype surrounding Chelsea wingbacks in the past few weeks has kept most occupied.

          5. Yes but the reliability of two defenders from City on past data has shown to match or outscored the uncertainty of starters upfront, for a discounted priced. At this point I wouldn't know which two to take, would be quite happy if I had one that played 3/4.

          6. I was hoping this move could get me ahead of the curve and fingers crossed come out with some more points as a result as well

The City attackers who have played 3/4 or more when fit (and when their competition was also fit) this season are in the brackets I typed there

            Foden, Jesus, Bilva

I don't like the idea of betting against a wingback in a team where you don't want two of their attackers, to buy a centre-back who just had his second attacking return of the season, might rotate, and locks you out of some of the best attackers in the game

It doesn't add up to me, considering FPL as an 11-player game. Feels like the worse of both worlds

            Good luck, still

I'm holding Raph for one more week and then looking to make that move. Bsilva has played two full 90s and the next game is a quick turn around. Raph definitely going to play and has a good fixture and on without Bamford

Not moving for Jota I had the chance (Chilwell injury) has massively derailed my season. Alonso and Gallagher vs Jota and 4.5 def has cost too many points and price rises to count and it's only been 2 weeks.

I wouldn't worry too much, Firmino will be back in the mix soon. Jota will still be a good asset especially with AFCON coming up but it's not like you can't get him later, can't have them all at the optimum point and price

Early thoughts for next GW. 2ft's 0itb

        Seriously thinking about doing Vardy-ESR-Raph > Dennis-Bilva-Son for a -4.

        Would give me this team:

        Sa
        TAA Cancelo James Rudi
        Salah Jota Son Bilva
        Toney Dennis

        Foster Antonio Livra Allan

Would be my first hit of the season btw.

Good moves..?? Any advice appreciated. TIA

I cant think of a time in FPL where the choice of strikers has been so unappealing. Really struggling to find one or two 'set and forget' choices.

It's easier if you plan it

I have Jesus Benteke Dennis now

It'll be Jesus Benteke Antonio soon

And then Jesus Antonio DCL for a long, long time

I know Antonio isn't firing now. I also know West Ham is still good, so I expect him to be back when fixtures turn green for ages. He's also been annoyingly unlucky, like Jesus... Which isn't a bad sign to me

I can't be the only one looking at Man City's upcoming fixtures and eyeing Foden as an option, especially after the masses that have and will continue to sell, ownership is currently 7.5%.

Should Foden be fit to play do people still view him as the best City mid/fwd, Bernardo or someone else?

        1. Ajax Hamsterdam

            And cheaper, yes.
Although as seen GW9 Foden has that ability to go big, so over a short period could be the more impactful scorer.
His role is also further forward, which is of preference.

Depends if he is on the left or central. If Grealish and Sterling are options Foden should be firmly back on the radar

            Yes. This is correct.
In my opinion, he is in their best 3 forwards and with City's fixtures, I'm fairly content as long as he plays, wherever that is across the front 3.

I've held through the injury issues for the same reason, he's dropped a bit in price but I'm delighted actually that so many have sold as he's a nice differential now and the fixture run is great. Was hoping he'd get a few mins last night but being available for the bench he should realistically be fine to start against Watford so hopefully he will. Hard to say who is best or if there is a "best" points will continue to be shared around but they're really kicking into gear now as they often do at this time after a slow start, i was looking primarily at Bernardo but also possibly Gundogan for a triple up but last night certainly sealed that for me

Peaks and troughs, your players simply can't score well every week. I had a sense I may get a red arrow this week, I was at 12k.
20k rank at the start of the GW is still very solid.

Which of these options would you go with? WC intact still.
        1. Jimenez-> Dennis/King. Keep WC until later.
        2. Jimenez -> Toney/Wilson (WC in 16 then).
        3. Save and re-assess next GW.

        Sanchez.
        TAA, Cancelo, Rudiger, James.
        Jota, Salah, Raphinha.
        Vardy, Pukki, Jimenez.
        McCarthy, Livramento, Gallagher, Bissouma.

Mo Salah has delivered at least 1 attacking return in 13 of the 14 gameweeks so far. In the one game he blanked he had a goal ruled out for a very marginal offside. Just mental.
