Moving Target

FPL new signings: Is Gabriel Jesus a good buy at £8.0m?

Gabriel Jesus has been priced up as an £8.0m forward by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after his move to Arsenal from Manchester City.

He’s proving to be a popular initial selection, too, sitting in around 44% of embryonic FPL squads at the time of writing – although ‘auto-picks’ will account for some of that total.

Reunited with Mikel Arteta, who spent over three years as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, the Brazil international only twice reached four consecutive starts throughout the last two seasons.

With the Gunners recently letting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette go, Jesus has the chance to become a reliable FPL asset for the first time really in his Premier League career.

We assess the new Arsenal number nine in our Moving Target report.

GABRIEL JESUS: FPL HISTORY

Gabriel Jesus arrived in Manchester aged 19, having led the line for Palmeiras’ first national championship title since 1994. His impressive first half-season brought seven goals and four assists from just ten appearances.

SeasonTeamStarts (sub)Mins playedGoalsAssistsFPL Points
2021/22Manchester City21 (7)187188120
2020/21Manchester City22 (7)205695115
2019/20Manchester City21 (13)2018148146
2018/19Manchester City8 (21)10177379
2017/18Manchester City19 (10)1660137126
2016/17Manchester City8 (2)6517467

And Jesus never really let Guardiola down. His 9,273 league minutes equates to 103 full games, with 93 goal involvements arriving at a rate of one per 99.7 minutes.

Yet two big problems have plagued his five-and-a-half years at the Etihad Stadium – Pep Roulette and sporadic stints playing on the wing.

The former meant Jesus never played more than 60% of minutes in a season and therefore rarely existed on the radar of most FPL managers.

The arrivals of Erling Haaland and promising Argentine Julian Alvarez was the final nail in the coffin for his time in Manchester.

Above: Starting positions, according to Transfermarkt

Despite City not replacing the departed Sergio Aguero and Ferran Torres, last season saw Gabriel Jesus used less often as a forward. He has spoken publicly about being fine with this.

“I feel comfortable out wide. I didn’t start to play as a winger just this season. I have played with the national team there for two years. I started to play in the first team of Palmeiras as a winger and I played sometimes when I arrived here as a winger as well. So I think I’m okay there.” – Gabriel Jesus

Furthermore, following a poor 2018 World Cup where he failed to score from five Brazil starts up front, Jesus seemed to confess to coach Tite that cutting inside from the flanks is his preference.

“I spoke with the Brazil coach not that long ago and he said that after the World Cup he called over Gabriel Jesus and asked him, ‘Where do you want to play?’ Jesus said ‘I don’t mind’ but the coach said, ‘Obviously you mind, you obviously have a preference, what is your preference?’ And, somewhat sheepishly, Jesus said he’d rather play out wide. This is important. [Mikel] Arteta knows him from Man City but that’s a while ago and things change.” – South American football expert Tim Vickery

Tomi! Has a little bit of attacking threat compared to 0 for White, and less threat from Saliba than White. I'd like to see Saliba at RB just because he has significant ownership in FPL 🙂

Anyone going for Dias / Laporte over Cancelo for the £1m saving?

No. Side-but-related note: I actually wish Pep would play Stones more regularly because he's actually been the best CB for City over the past 2 seasons from a PPM and value perspective

Thinking about it, a lot of my drafts have a heavy midfield and the extra mil saved from Cancelo > Laporte helps.

      Still undecided!

"Best" is a bit tough to define. I worry about picking the highest owned 4.5; who will invariably drop in price like a rock when he doesn't get minutes and everyone abandons for whichever 4.5 comes out of nowhere with a 10-pter in week 1

        Raya
        Trippier, Tierney, TAA, Cancelo, James
        Salah, Dias, Neto
        Haaland, Toney

I don't usually like a back 5 but with the added unlimited transfers I can use my WC earlier if need be.

The position I'm having the hardest time nailing down is my 4th/5th defenders. I could keep one, move the other to a fodder and look at upgrading else where. I'm just not overly confident that any mid or fwd in the 6-7 price range can outscore Trippier or Tierney

For the midfield I’m taking a punt on Benrahma. I feel he will have a breakout season and planning on sticking with him.

My defenders are AAT, Cancelo, James and Peresic.

Without wishing to "point a finger" Arsenal defence wasn't as good when Partey wasn't playing. I think Cash will be a better option at £5m.

        Lloris/Ederson
        TAA/Robbo/Chilwell/Doherty/Jonny
        Diaz/Maddison/Foden/Martinelli/Neto
        Haaland/Watkins/Archer

Pretty happy with this- next draft in August. Villa players are a nice 2-game stopgap to survey the scene. Perisic being 50% owned and a cheaper Doherty at 3% is the FPL hype machine in full swing imo.

        Diaz + Nunez = £17m

        vs

        Salah + £4.5m non-playing FWD bench-fodder = £17.5m

I know it's Salah, but I just don't see the value... Think I'me going NoMo (and possibly SansSon too)...

I went without Salah last season between GW3-7 - it was awful, swore by to never go without him again.

Watching Liverpool games when not owning him is terrifying

Anyone posting one in general, all that'll happen is people will push you towards the template. Pick your team, trust your gut, make your own decisions and have fun. Why would I want anyone to rate my team, I rate it myself that's why I picked it!

With those Arawnal fixtures and a wildcard to use between 1 and 16 you probably should start with triple Arsenal.

Whilst Tomiyasu is the obvious season keeper, starting with Tierney for the first 6-8 games may prove worthwhile.

Likely to attack A LOT vs those weaker teams.

Early season he shouldn't be as big of an injury risk as he is later in the year.

          Thoughts?

When Tomiyasu plays, KT's allowed to bomb forward at will.

I'll always be tempted by a healthy Tierney.

              Didn't know this info.

Will also be interesting, he puts in a lot of good crosses and I just felt the arsenal forwards weren't always there to finish them off. Wonder if Jesus can increase his assist potential..

Yep, Arsenal play a lopsided structure when Tomiyasu's fit. He hangs back more with White and Gabriel.

While that's true, Martinelli being in the side significantly decreases Tierney's threat, he constantly ignores his overlaps and cuts inside instead

I'm personally never picking Tierney again, his injury record is a joke. I like the triple Arsenal idea though as their fixtures are great and it's a differential

But what I'm saying is he only has to last the first 6-8 weeks of the season.

It's low risk - medium reward IMO

I agree with keeping your mind open but even still I actually think Trippier could be a better option than Tierney anyway. Especially if he's whipping corners to big Sven Botman and Dan Burn lol

Well this is true and it's very hard for me not to go for Kieran from the start... but putting my FPL head on, my plan is triple Arsenal to around GW8 then they switch to triple Newcastle on wildcard.

Is Rashford a trap? 6.5 for what he is capable of seems too cheap.
Wavering between Rashford and Zaha (put vs sure starter)

          Happy, but keep tinkering:
          Raya */ Forster
          Robertson / Laporte / Trippier / White / Vestegaard **
          Salah / Kulu / Coutinho / Zaha *** / Andreas
          Haaland / Jesus / Undav

          * might be Henderson
** swap to Neco Williams if he goes to Forest
          *** Rashford?

Most formations covered, but feel like I'm missing something ...

I would want 2x 4.0 defs if going 343. Otherwise, you could use 1.0 million from Undav on White and Robertson to get 5.0 defender and TAA, for example. Or Undav + Zaha + White > 4.5 + Martinelli + James/Chilwell

I mean he lost his serve and his backhand. Incredible to win. Fritz should have targeted the backhand in the 4th set but was being too nice.

Obviously pain killers started to kick in and helped him but likely he has done more damage.

The man's pain threshold is incredible.

I think what happens is a lot of people do one of two things:
            1) "Look at these amazing gems I've found" -- it's the same general conclusion of who, on paper, is underrated for their price together with the heavy hitters they've fit into their team
            2) Acknowledgement of the general template, with 1-3 slight differences. Digne over Cash, Elang to have a good season, Barnes to get rotated less. So it's more of a "can someone validate my hypothesis" than it is an RMT

Points per game across both sets very similar so think cancelo + martinelli is better value at 2.0m cheaper.

What was the reasoning behind Emi Martinez losing so many bonus points? Just 7 compared to 27 in the previous season. The difference in cleasheets between the two seasons was only 3.
