FPL pre-season: Key Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal and United takeaways

Most teams have completed their pre-season tours around the globe and as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, we are always looking to gain whatever information we can from these warm-up matches.

READ MORE: The Complete Guide to FPL Pre-Season 2022/23: Best players, fixtures, transfers + more

The “it’s only pre-season” phrase is thrown about a lot so it is often difficult to know how much we can really discern from these games.

Indeed, there’s this excellent analysis done by the Opta Analyst account that shows that there is very little correlation between a team’s pre-season results and their form in the first 10 league matches.

I completely agree with what one Twitter user said in one of the replies: goals/assists/clean sheets are largely irrelevant but minutes, formation and fitness is what I think we can take from these games.

With that in mind, these are my thoughts so far…

Chelsea

As a Chelsea fan, it is only fair that I start by talking about the Blues first. It was always going to be a summer of transition after losing so many key players and there also being changes in the boardroom. We have an extremely bloated squad, full of players who are looking to leave but who nobody wants. It’s also the first time this group of players has had a manager for an extended period, so I don’t know if maybe they are just used to the constant shock factor that a change in head coach brings?

Either way, I know I said we shouldn’t read too much into the goal/clean sheet numbers but the performances in the games I watched were very poor and disjointed. Thomas Tuchel does not sound like a happy man and I am inclined to ignore the Blues’ assets early doors. Reece James (£6.0m) will likely be playing right centre-back until we get some reinforcements and Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) is nowhere near sharpness yet.

Manchester United

I blame my pod partner and fellow Pro Pundit Lateriser for this: I am quite bullish on United after what I have seen. Again, I am not reading too much into the goals they scored against Liverpool’s third-string team or Crystal Palace’s B team. I am looking at the patterns of play and the movement off the ball, and this team is completely unrecognisable. The manager let David de Gea (£5.0m) know in no uncertain terms how he wants to play and Erik ten Hag seems to me a manager with a clear philosophy, something Manchester United have lacked in the last decade.

Their assets are definitely under-priced after their disastrous 2021/22 campaign and I am undecided still who to go for between Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.0m). The elephant in the room obviously is Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m): he is still a Manchester United player at the time of writing and might be when the season kicks off but I think he will be gone by the end of the transfer window. However, it does raise some concern, as Martial could easily take Rashford’s spot on the left. Jadon Sancho (£7.5m), then, seems to be the most ‘stable’ of the lot.

FPL pre-season lessons:

Arsenal

The Gunners have had a great transfer window and I am very bullish about Gabriel Jesus’ (£8.0m) prospects this season. I really rate the player and breaking free from the shackles of a Pep Guardiola system should give him a lot more freedom. He has also already spoken about how he wants to add more goals to his game.

Along with Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Jesus is one of the few locks in my FPL side. I will likely double up on the Arsenal attack, keeping the fixtures in mind, but who I go for between Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) will probably be a late decision.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Antonio Conte has transformed Tottenham Hotspur into a formidable outfit and their attacking numbers after his appointment were up there with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. I really want to invest in one of their wing-backs but the situation is a bit murky: Matt Doherty (£5.0m) was the only player not to come off the bench in their last pre-season game and Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) looks like he still needs to build some fitness. I am not convinced about the viability of a three-premium setup and really want to include at least one of their attackers, so it might have to be at Erling Haaland’s (£11.5m) expense.

ZOPHAR’S CURRENT FPL DRAFT

I will be back again next week with my thoughts after the final pre-season games and the Community Shield.

In the meantime, we have been churning out content over at the FPL Wire Youtube channel. We have covered the promoted teams, defenders and midfielders so far, with defenders to come later this week.

Check it out here:

Re. the article, I love the Wire on YouTube, watching Zophar and Lateriser squabbling!

I largely agree with Zophar's comments, but can't bring myself to construct a 3-4-3 like that!

My thinking goes in a sequence like this:

    1. Who are most likely to rack up cleans sheets? City and Liverpool
    2. Who are most likely to score heavily early door? City and Liverpool.
So start by filling spots with those guys.
    3. Who's 3rd most likely to score aplenty and keep clean sheets? Spurs. Put them in.
    4. What about Chelsea? Bad vibes. Tuchel is good enough to steady the ship but they could e off to a wobbly start. Wait a bit.
    5. What about United? positive vibes. But will that translate into goals and clean sheets early doors? Not sure - also wait a bit.
    6. What about Arsenal? Positive vibes and lovely early fixtures. Pile in for the first few GWs, possibly until wildcard.
But - will Zinchenko start? I'd have him if nailed, but until sure, hold back.
That actually fills 9 of my starting spots. Last 2 places based on early fixtures, and first sub go to Trippier, Neto and Bailey. Along with Andreas they rotate to bench for tricky fixtures or a benching for Bailey.
Final bench spots - rumours re. Foxes puts Ward in as 4m keeper de jour. Mt planner suggests a possibility of wanting triple Villa for a run of games, so I'll not take Archer; won't want triple Leeds, so Greenwood gets last place.

    Boom! Done!
That's my sensible draft; I also have a stupid draft. Haven't decided which to go with yet.

Bro, you just can't say: fill team with City and Liverpool players. They aren't 5m and 6m so you can just click and fill. Put 2 Lpool and 2 City and more than half budget gone.

      Hard to disagree with that!

The issue with Spurs I think is which defender do you pick, given the uncertainty over the wingbacks. I am not sure any of the centre halves particularly excite me.

I understand the Martial punt but I think there's a big difference between stroking in goals in lovely Auz-based friendlies to doing it against tough PL opponents. I think he's a terrible player myself because when the chips are down he goes missing.

The stupid draft outscores the sensible draft every game week. Only thing is it’s a different stupid draft every gameweek that does so and the sensible one averages out much higher.

    Keep coming back to this:

    A) Ederson + 5.0 DEF

    or

    B) 4.5 GK + James/Chilwell

Same issue. B as it's far more flexible moving forward. As someone else said Dias is an option as well. Ederson is a transfer waiting to happen to free up budget or free up a City slot. This is also the slot which likey gets you to Perisic (5.5m) if required GW3. Hope that helps.

Feel like I am getting close to final draft.
Staying clear of Chelsea, potential Kane to Haaland wk2

    Ederson (4.0)
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Zinc (neco)
    Martineli, Diaz, Son, Neto (Andreas)
    Jesus, Kane (4.5)

Did have Saka in instead of Martineli with 4.5 keeper.

    Thoughts welcome

Midfield is a little weak for my liking but you have a really strong defence and attack so that makes up for it. You could downgrade either one of Ederson or Robertson to upgrade the midfield a bit but it's not essential imo.

Team until early wildcard in 6(ish), assuming city don't sign a full back. Unsure of best 4.5 def.

    Ramsdale / 4.0
    TAA / Robbo / Walker / Dalot / 4.0
    KDB / Diaz / Maddison / Rashford / 4.5
    Kane / Jesus / 4.5

Other thought is Walker & Maddison to Martinelli & Cancelo but not wanting double Ars attack really, and Maddison looks great preseason.

Bench Boost GW1. Probably gonna WC GW3 so it's essentially a two-week FH team, too (kinda).

    Kane (SOU/che) Jesus (cry/LEI) Wilson (NFO/bha)
    Neto (lee/FUL) Bailey (bou/EVE) Salah (ful/CRY) Diaz (ful/CRY) BrunoG (NFO/bha)
    Zinc (cry/LEI) Trippier (NFO/bha) Robbo (ful/CRY) Dalot (BHA/bre) Justin (BRE/ars)
    Meslier (WOL/sou) Martinez (bou/EVE)

Justin might be a risk - any other 4.5s people would recommend? The rest should play - certainly in GW1.

Thoughts on the approach? I'm just a bit bored of how I played last year (quite safe) plus I really disliked the BB chip hanging over me haha. A bench of Meslier, Justin/Fofana, Dalot, and Bailey is a bit uninspiring, tho...

Honestly, I'm not a fan of the strategy. Mainly because it forces you into an early WC before we really know how new signings are settling in, who are the most reliable budget enablers, etc. The opening day is also the big unknown so it feels a bit punty to me. Also bear in mind we could get a starting 4m GK at Leicester, but this may not be clear GW1 as Ward is apparently injured at the mo.

You should also be able to score more with it once TV increases and/or in DGW. Plus the extra WC may give you an extra opportunity to WC out of the strong bench. Haven't started planning mine yet but I think the final week before the World Cup is a decent option, especially if I make a strong start & can hold my 1st WC til GW9 or so.

There's still plenty of good differentials / gambles out there, especially if you're happy to go with a defence of Robbo + some 5m/4.5m options.

I currently have 2 main drafts, one very high risk, one safe (-ish, for me anyway). Still deciding betweem them or whether to try balance them

I think I have narrowed it down to a couple of options.

    5-3-2 with Ramsdale , Cash , Saka , Neto starters , 2 x 4.5M mids bench
    Or
4-4-2 with Ederson Bailey , Saka , Neto starters , Neco bench + 4.5M mid bench

    What would be your preference?

Like most Probably I have two midfield options to decide on. But there is question marks over all of them.
13m to spend on two midfielders.

      1) Saka and Bailey - currently my top choice.

Pros - Saka is an easy switch to other 8m later. Likely to be
very involved in the Arsenal attack plus set pieces. Bailey should maybe start one plenty of minutes as 5 sub rule as well both in top form.

Cons- Will Bailey keep his place - is Martinelli better value with money saved. Most have Martinelli.

      2) Grealish and Martinelli-

Pros - both likely to start for the first few at least. Fpl review rates this combo highest

Cons - uses up my last Man City spot. Which means foregoing on Haaland for at least two transfers. Martinelli won’t play many full 90

        Damn thing posted.
        Other options are

        3) all in Arsenal - Odergaard Martinelli (all eggs in one basket)

        4) Guimares and Coutinho (seems shaky fixtures and for questions)

5 Rashford as one of the two? After first two fixtures mixed

I'd say Saka and Bailey purely because there's so many options in the 8.0 mid category that i feel you should have at least one of them.

Thanks. I suppose there is tendency to overthink these things.Bailey will likely be transferred out after gameweek 3 at some anyway. Or else I will just bench him.

      Too punty?

      Martinez
      Trent, Robertson, Cancelo, Gabriel, Trippier
      Salah, Saka, Maddison, Almirón
      Kane (C)

Not at all, the only punt i really see is Almiron and tbh i'm not a fan of that pick but apart from that it's pretty good.

I think his biggest draw is that he's nailed for the best team in the league -- and who happens to open with great fixtures -- while very few others are (Cancelo & KDB would be the next closest to nailed).
Not for me, but I have no problem with him being in the conversation.

      Am I being silly here?

I have found myself without Haaland or Jesus for GW1, and a stonking £4m ITB.

      Meslier - 4.0
      TAA - Cancelo - Perisic - Ait-Nouri - Neco
      Salah - Dias - Neto - Bailey - Pereira
      Kane - Martial - Archer

Planning a 4-4-2. Alt-Nouri and Neco rotate reasonably nicely, as do the 3x cheap midfielders.

In GW3 looking at moving a cheap midfielder to Man City midfielder if Grealish or Mahrez getting serious minutes, and will also move Martial to Jesus (think Jesus might suffer a price drop first couple games harder than thought). With the £4 ITB I can afford both moves.

Other thought with this is I want to try and generate additional team value with an early wildcard (GW6/7) looking almost locked in.

Three out of those are woeful defensively and the other is Bournemouth.

Yes Saliba will be CB, White is covering at RB currently. Obviously form dependant if Saliba has a shocker first two games then he'll be dropped pretty rapidly but to start with he's a good choice and is so good I don't see him playing poorly anyway

            Thoughts on that draft?

Raya or Walker and Zin can be easily changed so it is more about the structure. One of the biggest dilemmas is Robo vs Diaz.

            Raya
            TAA/Cancelo/Walker/Zin
            Salah/Diaz/Mahrez/Neto
            Kane/Jesus

I think that Robbo will match Diaz but that's just a personal viewpoint . I like the idea of having TAA Robbo & Cancello as I think these 3 are a good bit ahead in value terms than other defenders.

Scamacca coming in at 7m seems a little high, given Mitrovic scored 41 goals last season and is 6.5, but he might be one to consider.

Really? Because I'd rather Mitrovic for the lower price, and the fact Scamacca is new to a league and team while playing back up to Antonio.

Could argue Mitro has proven he’s not good enough for the league. West Ham are the better team, hence the price is higher. I don’t think it’s difficult to grasp personally. It’s not like Antonio is 6.5 is he?

Odd way to put it, that I'm finding it difficult to grasp?

I think FPL have been quite good with their prices this year in order to mix up the template.

Scamacca is an unproven back up so not sure why you're mentioning Antonio. My point is that his price isn't competitive. Prices aren't just based on which team they play for otherwise you'd see the Pool strikers at more than 9m.

Haters hating with no evidence to prove their disapproval keep your knickers on.. it’s a fair enough price for talented Italian international who was second highest scoring Italian in Seria A last season.. he joins half decent team it’s crazy prices we talking so don’t be so tight in the pocket.. Scam scored a goal every 146mins last season only Salah (130min) & Jota (145min) scored more frequently in the prem so 7mil sounds fair enough haters

It's a fantasy football forum not a West Ham forum. I'm talking about price points of comparable players in terms of it being a new team, a new league and his certainty in the starting eleven.

The statistical evidence in that scenario is the players at the price points around him. For example Alvarez is the back up striker at City and he is priced at 6.5m. He also has a good record in the league he came from.

So just put your knickers back on please, there are kids here.

Scam will have exposure to more minutes in a very light West Ham squad where he has decent shot of becoming the first choice striker, compared to Alvarez struggling for minutes in a city team stacked with world class options. The extra 0.5 is justified. Sorry just don’t see where your point holds up but your free to voice the opinion.. football is freedom knickers

I would argue, however, that Scamacca has been brought in to play regularly, rather than as a backup. With Antonio priced at 7.5, it makes sense for GianScam to be 7.0., given his expected role and minutes. Sadly, it's not a simple apples-to-apples comparison with Mitrovic.
