FPL team guides: Brentford – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Arsenal and Aston Villa players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brentford.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

FPL pre-season lessons:

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4811th
Shots44213th
Shots in the box3177th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances679th
Expected goals (xG)52.3911th

The attacking statistics for Brentford very much rank in mid-table, which isn’t bad for a newly-promoted side making their Premier League debut.

However, their year splits into life with and without Christian Eriksen (£6.5m). His Gameweek 28 debut followed a terrible run of nine defeats from 11 matches, totalling just four points and six goals in those months.

Until Gameweek 27, the Bees were down in 17th place for total shots and 15th for goals scored.

Eriksen’s arrival sparked a late-season revival of seven wins and 21 goals but, now that the Dane has departed for Manchester United, we don’t know how good Brentford will be in their second campaign.

Headline-making victories came against Arsenal on the opening Friday, plus a 4-1 win away to Chelsea. Also impressive was doing the double over West Ham United.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5612th
Clean sheets9=10th
Shots conceded50310th
Shots in the box conceded3058th
Shots on target conceded17913th
Big chances conceded69=10th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)55.148th

Again, Brentford’s numbers line up slightly better than their 13th-placed finish.

Most of their season was played with a back-three system, which might explain why they ranked eighth-best for conceding shots inside the penalty area. They were seventh-best at allowing attempts from the left flank but 13th for those down the right.

Three of their nine clean sheets arrived within the first five outings, catching FPL managers off-guard. Of course, those who then bought a defensive asset had to wait until Gameweeks 13 and 25 for the next pair.

From Brentford defenders, only Chelsea scored more than their 13 – which includes the three of reclassified Sergi Canos (£5.0m). Add this to defensive assists and they are the best outside of last season’s top four (25).

Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) lead the way for matches started, with 37, while Rico Henry (£4.5m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) follow with 33 and 32.

OPENING FIXTURES

The opening run of Brentford fixtures is very generous, avoiding all of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12.

In fact, starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

That's right, but one of those seasons was his debut season when he didn't play in August. Another season he was injured for the first month. So that combined with a couple of seasons where he didn't score in the opening 3 games (often only 3 games in august) lead to this "pattern"

Concerned over Hallandale game time so going Foden to begin with (more of a certain starter do we think?) and then shift Kane to Haaland if the situation changes. Poor plan?

Foden hasnt been with the squad for preseason (due to vaccination status apparently), so there's some doubt whether he starts GW1 too. The Kane - Haaland plan is a fairly popular one

Having Kane for GW1 and waiting is a good option, WH week one not a great fixture for city. Foden hasn't played preseason so may be a risk with minutes too. The only reason I will have any city GW1 is so I can have 2 for GW2 without taking a hit

Not seeing much love for Matty Cash in teams. Is that maybe because people don’t want a double up with Bailey?

I reckon he’ll match or beat James in the early rounds and 1m cheaper.

I'm looking at having both for the first three fixtures. Will have to save a transfer so I can do a double GW4, this may put some people off doing both if they already have other moves in mind. That said if Villa and Bailey are doing well hosting WH may not be a terrible fixture for Bailey, so could just move Cash. The Hammers defence not the meanest.

He’s a decent option, I prefer trippier because I think Forrest at home and Brighton away are both plum defensive fixtures for him and then I can rotate him game week 3

Haha, template shmemplate, I try to choose who I think will go well. Obviously ends up with a number of template players because that’s why it becomes template. 442 with TAA, Cancelo, Cash and Trippier still allows me 2 premiums and 8m players which I like.

I disagree about the early fixtures. Think the first 3 are great and I’m expecting good things from Villa this year. Will probably need to move on for GW4, but that’s not going to be hard to do I reckon.

The problem is with Neco, Bailey and presumably an even worse bench, you've got no strength in depth and no flexibility. Injuries and benchings and your squad is destroyed.

Too much compromise at the back. Even if Haaland Kane score 200 points, thats a cost of 23m. You can get the same from TAA and Cancelo for 14m. Its a no brainer

The problem is, any week where your premium (any of them) gets 2 points is going to hurt. Take it from someone who jumped on Salah x Ronaldo x Lukaku - the first week was great, it went downhill after that.

I must say I don't necessarily expect it to go quite as smoothly as my no-Salah phase last season. But I still think the Spurs/City captain rotation looks the best to start, and like the mid-price Liverpool options more than Spurs/City so overall I'm happy with this balance

He’s a great pick. I’ve gone Kane just because of team structure (I think a fair few are doing the same, Kane / Haaland switch).

I wanted Son over Kane, but I also want 2 playing forwards and that’s where my issue is. Got Jesus and Kane, but if I switch to Son then I’m left with only 1 forward. So yeh if you can get your structure right Son is probably the better option.

Done all I could to get Cancelo in but couldn't. Settled with Walker for City defence cover. Think I'm set.
    Thoughts???

    Sanchez 4m
TAA Walker Trippier Dalot Neco Salah Sancho Bailey Peirrera Murphy
    Haaland Kane Jesus

Very nice. It’s very similar to mine, but I’ve not compromised Cancelo and instead have Neto to your Sancho.

Good thinking, I'm thinking Sancho and Walker > Neto and Cancelo ??? Thanks

Got to make compromises somewhere to fit in all those premiums.

You may be relying on Neco and Perreira a lot to get 11 out every week.

But that's the gamble you have to take as the budget dictates what you can do once you fit all those big hitters in.

At first glance I thought, where TF has all the money gone? You did a good job hiding Salah as 6th defender!

Well, maybe not all you could… you could take out your third premium attacker, but for 3 premiums I think you have to leave Cancelo, TAA or Jesus out.

Who is the cheapest, starting striker?

      Probably Undav for Brighton (5.5m)

Hehe ok. Johnson at 6m, as Andy suggests below, is probably the cheapest striker I'd properly consider too

Nothing great under 6m for now. Broja still might go elsewhere and become an option again.

I've taken a few days out and just had another look at my draft.
    What do you reckon?
    Raya
    Robbo Cancelo Trippier Ait-Nouri
    Salah KDB Diaz Kulu Martinelli
    Jesus
    (4.0 Neco Archer Greenwood)

    1. Jackie Moon

Pretty good. Robbo over TAA is risky, but both are great. Not convinced by Kulu. Id prefer Kane/Son with Mahrez and leave out KDB.

Pretty much a template pick with a few changes here and there. I'm sure this is not gonna make the final draft. Don't seem to be able to decide

    Mendy (Sanchez)
    Cancelo Trippier TAA (N.Williams Justin)
    Salah Coutinho Rashford Martinelli Neto
Haaland Jesus (4.5 - probably greenwood)

    0.5 ITB

Go Kane to start. Can always change to Haaland 2nd week if he starts sharply.

I hold my team for the CS now. Things I’m looking at that might impact my team
    * Diaz starting on the left, he’s in.
    * How do City look in defence. I want one, ideally stretch to Cancelo but we see
*Haaland, KDB, how sharp do they look? Can only pick one

    1. Bring back Rafa

      Trent and Robbo in regardless

of KDB and Haaland, I would go KDB. Pep has always eased new signings in, even big money. Haaland was half what they paid for Graelish (bargain)

    How does this look?

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo James Zinchenko Trippier
    Salah Bowen Martinelli
    Halland Jesus

    Steele Bailey Andreas Greenwood

    Unpopular opinion:
Every $4.5m defender is a trap!

Just pay the cash for City/Liverpool defenders and fill them with $4.0m if not 5atb

TAA and Robbo. Only season in the last 4 they haven’t scored around about 200 points was when VVD was injured and you can still get both for $14.5m…..As long as they have Virgil next to them, I’ll keep picking them

Trent is the obvious one, then Robbo. Three other assets that have never left my draft because their prices are too tempting are Martinelli, Neto and Jesus.
