FPL team guides: Crystal Palace – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Crystal Palace, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored5010th
Shots41216th
Shots in the box3019th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances6112th
Expected goals (xG)54.628th

The mid-table finish of Patrick Vieira’s debut campaign as head coach matches the general rank for attacking statistics.

15 teams pulled off more shots but that’s only because the Eagles attempted the fewest from outside the box (111), with Vieira seemingly pushing his side to be patient and less wasteful. As a result, they come ninth for shots inside the box and eighth for expected goals (xG).

Palace finished just one point short of their highest ever 38-game Premier League total, while Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) had his best top-flight campaign for goals scored (14) and FPL points (150).

Vieira’s biggest task over the summer was to replace the excellent loanee Conor Gallagher (£6.0m), whose fantastic first half of the season encouraged parent club Chelsea to keep him around this time.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded467th
Clean sheets126th
Shots conceded4435th
Shots in the box conceded2675th
Shots on target conceded1445th
Big chances conceded452nd
Expected goals conceded (xGC)46.735th

Palace’s underlying defensive numbers were outstanding in 2021/22.

For the Eagles to rank fifth over the whole season for conceding attempts, shots on target and shots in the box – whilst having the second-best record for allowing big chances – is both surprising and a great indication of Vieira’s impact at Selhurst Park.

Defensive solidity allowed some big wins to take place against the league’s best, with 3-0 home wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal bettered by a 2-0 victory away to champions Manchester City. In fact, the Eagles have the honour of being the only team that Pep Guardiola’s side failed to score past in either meeting.

Palace’s back four also provided 12 attacking returns, thanks to the four assists of Joachim Andersen and two goals of Marc Guehi. Of all defenders priced at £4.5m, these two are the highest points scorers from last season.

OPENING FIXTURES

The nasty run of opening fixtures will likely prevent FPL managers from investing in Zaha and such a strong defence.

Trips to Liverpool and Man City take place in the first four matches, placing Palace bottom of our Season Ticker for the first six Gameweeks and they continue to be until Gameweek 13.

One plan might be to wait until the fifth outing, as the ticker ranks Palace as third-best between then and the World Cup break that follows Gameweek 16.

Palace’s run from Gameweeks 10-18 sees them face all three newly promoted clubs plus Leeds, Wolves, Southampton and Everton.

Looking at 2 drafts with Diaz & Robbo as the 3rd pool player. Which one looks better -

    A
    Ramsdale
    Trent Dias Justin Dunk Ait-Nouri
    Salah Diaz Grealish Rashford Neto
    Jesus Kane (4.5)

    B
    Ramsdale

    Salah Mahrez Rashford Neto (4.5)

1 No, only started 21 league games (90 mins in only 8 games) and played about 29 games last season. Arsenal may play 2 up top in which case a midfielder may miss out on minutes
      2 Tomiyasu

1 no, not even close. Should be 1st choice at least to begin with though
      2. I think they’re all an avoid tbh to begin with - better options elsewhere

    Question for the Catholics:

Is Jesus definitely better than a second 8m midfielder, assuming you have Dias.

Not overly religious, but Jesus has pretty scary ownership so that's a factor. Prefer Maddison personally, but I have both

      1. Bartowski
        • 13 Years

Yes Maddison was exactly the person I was thinking of when I asked the question. I'm just not a big fan of Jesus' first couple of fixtures.

        1. have you seen cyan
          • 4 Years

I think its certain Jesus is gonna get some points, just will Maddison surpass him? I think so, but yea its a big gamble going without Jesus. Hence why I'm both.
Maddison is a big differential 5.7% ownership, 12 goals, 11 assist last season.

          1. Bartowski
            • 13 Years
            1 year, 9 months ago

I did already make the gamble to go without Jesus when I was thirteen or so. Won't find out if that was the correct choice for circa fifty years. Maybe I should go with my gut again this time.

      100%.....for 8M it's a steal
And then (i dont like to watch it) but 60% ownership
He is "must have" in my opinion

      1. Bartowski
        • 13 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

Is it? Or are we all just getting carried away?

Maddison got 14 goals, 11 assists, in a less impressive team, in 2454 minutes. Jesus got 8 goals, 8 assist for the best team in the country in 1871 minutes.

I think it's a closer call than people think and two 8m midfielders allows you more flexibility.

    3. CYN
      • 5 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

Probably not. Saka for example could definitely outscore Jesus over the opening weeks but I like the option to move easily to Martial, Toney etc if necessary.

      1. Bartowski
        • 13 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

Hmm maybe my question needs the caveat that I have Martial as well, so I have in the back of my mind I can move him to the players around the same price point.

      2. Zimo
        • 5 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

Saka will be getting less bonus with Jesus in the team though with the way Jesus plays. If he scores he'll get 3 bonus and even if Saka scores if there's a clean sheet Ramsdale and Zinchenko will steal the bonus.

        1. CYN
          • 5 Years
          1 year, 9 months ago

Yeah bonus is a factor. But Jesus surely more likely to be subbed for Nketiah than Saka though right? Unless they are chasing the game and play 2 at striker. Plus Saka likely on pens

That said, I have Jesus and intend to start the season with him.

    4. jacob1989

Is Neto worth having over a 5.0 defender? I'm thinking Cash, Walker, Trippier in a 532 is probably better than Neto in a 442.

    Definitely want a defence of

    Taa Robbo and cancelo

Mid has to include Salah and son

    Attack has to include Jesus

That means no Kane or haaland.

Am I being short sighted without a premium striker?

    1. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years

no, you're actually being long sighted - Son and Salah are obviously better picks than Kane and Haaland

      1. jacob1989
        • 2 Years

there is nothing between Son & Kane. They are pretty equal to me. Usually 1 scores, other assists.
RIght now Salah seems better option than Haaland. Lets see how Haaland performs.

The £2 mill price difference will also give you 40 points for Allison over Raya and 30 points for your 5.5 wing back over your 4.5 cheapie defender 😉

Kane & Haaland to push 30 goals this season and the lion’s share of baps … against max 25 for Son and Salah as their minutes drop of this season with better backup coming off their respective benches

    2. Z
      • 6 Years

It is all about what do you want- balance or "yolo".
But this year i think that Kane and Haaland could be very very big

    3. CYN
      • 5 Years

Not really. Elite mids generally outscore strikers but the flexibility of a 11.5 striker is is nice.

        • 14 Years

I don’t mind taking points hits early on. So if I need to get Kane or haaland then I’ll take a hit.

I think those three defs, Jesus and two premiums is the way to go - I agree Salah is one so you are left with one of KDB, Haaland, Kane, Son.

I'm not sure the choice then is obvious but Son over a striker is certainly valid. Obviously whichever you don't have will scare you and the team you miss two of will really scare you but I think it's worth it for that core.

I assume one of the 8m mid options - again many options are valid without hindsight.

    5. PastaFasul
      • 10 Years

I am going without Kane or Haaland.....Salah, Son/DeBruyne flipflop in the mid with Jesus Johnson up front (4.5 Forward on bench) Allows TAA, Roberton, James, Cancelo at the back.

  10. Z

Oke....what do you lads think (this is an option with 3 premiums)?

    Sncez (4m)
    TAA, James, Walker, Dalot (Neco)
    Salah, Rashford, Baliey (Andreas, 4.5)
    Kane, Haaland, Jesus

      I must admit I'm not a threemium fan for what it costs elsewhere but;
      * I'd lose James until Che look better all the way down to a Paterson and make Walker Cancelo (or Robbo).
      * 2nd scummer mid probably DaSilva or if you wanted Walker then the James to scummer def cash gets you Martinelli/Neto

While I am positive Son + Jesus will score more than Bowen + Haaland, I am not brave enough to go without EBH.

I watch a lot of Dutch football and just assumed we were paying maybe 15-20m for Martinez 😯 guess he comes as 1st choice but that’s absolutely amazing for Ajax. No idea how they’ve pulled that off

It's funny because the first figure being touted was £35m but Ajax have managed to snag nearly an extra 75% on top of that

No love for Martinez? Quality keeper, Villa massively improved their defence with Digne then Carlos and Kamara in front of them.

Few goals conceded in pre season, Gerrard having a history of improving defences at the front of his management technique.

Keep coming back to this, even though not sure on the formation

    Ramsdale
    TAA Robertson Cancelo Dias James
    Bowen Diaz Saka
    Haaland Jesus

    4.0 4.5 4.5 4.5

No weak links there. If Haaland looks to have his minutes managed he can become Kane.

    Thoughts?

Rashford (if no Ronaldo) & JLingz to outscore your 8 mill mids and Dias

Seems somewhat apt that we've all embraced Jesus because we've been scared into what happens later on if we don't.

My mindset (once I got to a point where he was attainable) was that if I have him and he flops I can move him to other options easily. However if I don't have him and he has a great start, unless I want to downgrade a premium it's going to take minimum 2 moves to get him. Given Arsenal's decent starting run it's an easy choice between those two for me (granted I think Palace and Leicester will both be tough games and I think the former may beat them again)

4-5-1 leaves you with a very poor bench. Only Neco

If Jesus misses a game for any reason you likely have 10 men and covid makes it possible. I guess Greenwood or Taylor may get you a point with 5 subs
