FPL team reveal: Why I’ve picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) days away, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is former FPL champion Simon March, who talks through his latest Gameweek 1 plans.

FPL team reveal: Why I've picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

It’s not often we’re presented with a genuine game-changer in FPL but, this season, I think we might actually have one. Because of the break for the World Cup after Gameweek 16 and the unlimited transfers that FPL managers will have available to them before the restart, playing an early Wildcard is a more viable option than ever.

With this in mind, I almost feel like we owe it to ourselves to approach the opening Gameweeks as aggressively as possible. With my team, I’m intending to approach the first half-dozen Gameweeks of a season in a way that I might normally approach the final six Gameweeks of a typical campaign. Not only does that mean that I’m focusing disproportionately on players with good fixtures during this period but, also, that I’m willing to be less flexible in terms of team structure and take a few more risks than I might normally do, given the handy bailout option that the first Wildcard presents if I get things really wrong.

Of course, I’m not 100% committing to a Wildcard in Gameweek 7 – I’ll have been able to switch out a third of the squad by then just using free transfers – but treating the first six fixtures like a mini-season is the kind of low risk/high reward opportunity that I love in FPL

With all that said, here’s my FPL draft for 2022/23.

Goalkeepers

Xhaka and Moura recalled as Ramsdale starts again

I’ve gone for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0) in goal due to his fixtures and Arsenal’s demonstrable strength at the back, which we might expect to improve further with the addition of William Saliba (£4.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m). In addition to clean sheets, Ramsdale has a tendency to collect bonus points (14 last season, second only to Liverpool’s Alisson Becker (£5.5m) who managed 15).

My current back-up goalkeeper is Brighton’s own back-up, Jason Steele (£4.0m), because it offers cover if I go for the ‘downgrade’ of Ramsdale to Brighton’s number one, Robert Sanchez (£4.5m), to save money at some point down the line.

I’ve seen enough FPL now to be convinced that two £4.5m goalkeepers is the optimum strategy (provided you pick the right ones, of course) but, since I’m focused on getting everything possible out of the opening six Gameweeks, I’m shelving that approach in favour of trying to maximise the points I can get out of them and, for me, Ramsdale offers the best value route to doing that. I just have to hope he doesn’t get injured in that period.

Defenders

Haaland Foden

My thoughts on the popular 8.0 mil midfielders:
Diaz: Good but better triple up on Pool available
Saka: Great but triple up with Ramsdale, Martinelli Jesus better?
Mount: Great pick but not for the first 2 gameweeks
Kulusevski: Don't think he is worth 8.0 mil with Richy being available soon but good for gw1
Foden/Mahrez: Both rotation risk but Mahrez may be gold if he hits form with pens there and no other RW in squad

      - Agree with Diaz.
      - Mount is a flat track bully and can do well in GW1.
      - Rich is more of a risk with Sons mins imo rather than Kulu
      - Foden will be first choice at LWF or RWF due to better pressing from the front compared to Grealish and Mahrez

Agree with all points except Kulu.

I think Richarlison will mostly make late appearances for either Son or Kane. Son is 30, Kane isn't far behind. Kulu is in his early 20's so can play 90 mins regularly.

It's also quite likely Son and/or Kane will see reduced minutes ahead of CL games.

Forgot to add Maddison who i think should be avoided after the latest transfer rumours linking him with Newcastle

Risks with most of them but easy to switch around between them after couple of weeks if you have 1 or 2. Currently on Diaz and Mount and will most likely switch one to Foden if he starts a couple

Is Cancelo essential? He is amazing player but City have some injured defenders and I don't know if they can get same amount of clean sheets as last year.

I have him and he's one of very few players I've been sure on keeping since the game opened, but honestly I don't expect anything more than 1/2pts against West Ham and I think GW3+4 (Newcastle and Palace) will be tricky ties for City. Wouldn't at all judge anyone for waiting a few weeks for City to settle and pick up match fitness and Laporte to return

Why are not more choosing Kulu in the 8.0 bracket? What am I missing? Points per minute last season was really up there

Have a few 8.0 spots currently, easy switch over if he starts performing well. Not sure how Spurs will line up this season at the mo with their new signings.

    A:

    Ramsdale

    Ward - Andreas - Neco - Archer

    B:

I'm going to have at least 2. I'm on the fence about Diaz, would much prefer Darwin but need to alter the team structure to get him in. I see why people double up on TAA & Robbo, but it's a heave investment at the back if you also want to include Cancelo - which I do

I managed to cut this cack out a few years back when I realised almost all information accrued in the close season is as speculative as it can be and becomes obsolete by the deadline. Now I just read bits here and there and then spend a couple of hours on deadline day and bang a team together. Most of everything else is wasted time and energy

Lots of other good Arsenal choices.

He doesn't have a history of attacking returns.

Wanted to know any good 6m and under cheap mid option for atleast 8 GW's since I've found out-
Neto- Jiminez injured, he might play on the wing and Podence central
BrunoG- Deeper role since Shelvey injured
Rash and JWP not an option for me at present so 0.5 extra won't do any good either.
Was looking for a player who WOULD score atleast 125 season total with playing 3000+ mins without injury.
If possible plz give reasoning behind the player/players

      JWP at 6.5
Odeguard (Not my pick) I can think of a few.
Picking 3 000 minutes @ 125 points is pointless. You have 4 opportunities in total change; never mind normal transfers.

JWP not an option 🙂 (Opening fixtures..)

You asked for 3 000 minutes not a short term option; if you follow my meaning.

The 3000 mins is just for no rotation. I would hate to keep checking the lineups to see if the player is even on it. Bailey had a good preseason problem is still is rotation and villa fixtures take a dive after GW3. If I go shorterm I wouln't have transfers left for the hot picks/ injuries 🙁

Brendan Aaronson, 5.5m. Been watching all Leeds' friendlies & he's basically the new heart of our attack. 3 assists in last game. On some set pieces (shared with Harrison). Nailed & can play as 10 or on the right. Good fixture run. Just the kind of player that could become a bandwagon & get a few early price rises

What about Sanchez & ward as a combo as Leicester and Brighton rotate well?

Yeah it looks good. Was starting to think of upgrading to Ramsdale but this is a gift that enhances Sanchez' appeal for me

I'm a little unsure of the love for this.

Sanchez GW1-4: ManUtd, Newcastle, West Ham, Leeds
Ward GW1-4: Brentford, Arsenal, Southampton, Chelsea

All 8 of those teams are well capable of scoring a fair few goals, the weakest teams (Brentford, Soton, Leeds) were all in good goalscoring form in preseason, maybe excepting Brentford

Brentford, Southampton and Leeds are all expected to be in or around the lower quarter of the league. If you can't back a goalkeeper against those teams, then who can you back them against?

On paper I agree but there are a few levels to this. Brighton have lost a key defensive asset in Bissouma and look like losing Cucurella, only half a year after losing Dan Burn. Leicester look like they may lose Fofana, and he missed the majority of last season when their xGc was significantly higher than the last 3 seasons. Pereira is also injured and Evans getting on in years and they don't seem to be able to afford to buy just yet. Secondly, while I agree that you need to back your keeper against sides at the lower ends of the table, there's a big difference between backing a GK at City or Spurs playing against them and backing a GK at a side that at best will probably be mid-table. I just don't look at these two options and their fixtures and think that they're very promising.

        I'm reading it like this:
BRE NEW SOU LEE ful LEI bou CRY
Basically just covering Sanchez v mun & whu

I would love to be able to climb into the 2015 year bubble and just pick the side I want for FPL. It feels as though, even without realizing it at times I am picking a standard high ownership side, not even because I want to, just because it is in my face.
There are good reasons to have Robbo, Mount, Vardy, Bowen, Madi; the list goes on.
Are we all pigeon holing ourselves?

    Triple Liverpool
    Triple Spurs
    Triple Villa
    Triple Newcastle
    Triple Leeds

All in on the teams with the best looking fixtures. Then start afresh in GW2.

I'd love it, I'd love it if I smashed it in GW1 😉

      3 Pool
      3 City
      3 Arsenal
      2 Chelsea

Our teams are completely diferent, which is a good thing

My GW2 team will have triple City and Arsenal most likely. Just fancy something different to start with and those two have reasonably tough GW1 fixtures

Yeah different approaches, if it all goes pear shaped in GW1 it's the best GW to screw up in at least with 37 more to go lol

I'd argue that Chelsea have an easy fixture against Everton. Not sure if Wolves will be an easy fixture for Leeds.

I like it, finding the Salah less teams are very balanced. Could do Sancho -> Diaz if you wanted as well.

Very very nice. Only thing I’d be tempted to change is Trippier to maybe Dier or Gabriel and do Ramsdale to Pope or Mendy…

The pool and city fixtures put me off Trippier but will have him in my first wc no doubt

Priorities the player you will captain in GW2. Yes to be on the safe side if booking a transfer unless comfortable going early with transfers before team news
