FPL team reveal: Five-time top 1k finisher’s Gameweek 2 plans

With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2022/23 underway, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Here, five-time top 1k finisher and Deputy Editor Tom Freeman shares his thoughts and transfer plans ahead of Gameweek 2.

... 2

The new FPL season is underway and if you owned Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.6m) in Gameweek 1, chances are you probably got off to a good start.

Fortunately, I was on the right side of the Haaland/Harry Kane (£11.4m) swing, ending the round on 73 points.

However, as focus now turns to Gameweek 2, here are some observations from the opening weekend that I found interesting, plus my own team and transfer plans.

SALIBA’S IMPRESSIVE DEBUT

Arsenal recorded a clean sheet in their 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Friday night, with the impressive William Saliba (£4.5m) named man of the match on his first competitive Gunners start.

“You don’t really see that. At 21 years old, debut in the Premier League, against this opponent, against physical players – and resolve that situation the way he has done it. With that composure, with that calmness and with that presence. So big credit to the boy.” – Mikel Arteta on William Saliba

Notably, there is now more depth in Arsenal’s backline, with Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.1m) also joining last season’s main four: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m), Gabriel (£5.0m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m).

Now manager Mikel Arteta has options, I think their defensive assets will offer real value in 2022/23, especially given their fixture run between Gameweeks 2 and 8.

The full-backs inverted roles mean when the team loses possession, there is space for opposition wingers to exploit, but this new system should at least hand Arsenal more control, something they lacked towards the end of last season.

ANOTHER £4.5M MIDFIELD ENABLER?

    Current team:

    Alisson
    TAA Cancelo Walker Trippier
    Salah Kulu Martinelli
    Haaland Jesus Mitrovic

    1. Would you move Kulu for someone else this GW? who would be best replacement?

The thing is, the premium defence looks best value for the season and the temptation is for the forwards but the real points are still in midfield.

So Wilson and Mitro with Kulusevski and Saka or Maddison would probably serve you better.

But Nunez looks promising and Haaland etc. Good luck.

Surely I’m not the only one considering TC Haaland in GW2?
I know the purists out there will be saying wait for DGW to TC anyone but later in the season when the DGW’s happen would the likes of Haaland even play in those 2 games when Man City will likely still be involved in UCL & FA Cup?
Also if you fancy Haaland to score heavily in GW2 would he better that tally in a DGW.
I’m not saying Haaland will be the only player worthy of TC by the latter part of the season but it would be interesting to hear other FPL managers thoughts.

I considered it but might be a tad too early in the season. Guess its high risk high rewards. One thing i strongly believe is that you don't have to wait for a DGW to use it. I TC KDB for his 4 goals last season. Yes it was a DGW but he got all his points in one game. Can see Haaland hauling.

It would be peak Pep roulette if Haaland was rested home to Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

I don't think it's likely but we don't know. I'm sure he'll be eased in, but how about Julián Álvarez?

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years
      1 year, 8 months ago

I don't see any reason why he would be rested, if he needs a 2 week break between games then there's an enormous issue there and he sure didn't look unfit or even tired when he left the field the other day. Pep also said the first 3-4 weeks of the season will be when Haaland will really come into his own as he builds fitness along with the rest of the squad.

Alvarez on the right may happen but still I doubt it, probably a game that suits Mahrez more

    Aaronson a decent punt.

I'll likely bench Trippier against City, despite Newcastle's form under Howe last season, City beat them on aggregate 9-0 over the two games (and it could have been worse than 5-0 in the second game). I'm definitely playing him against Liverpool though.

Good thanks, 70pts, pretty happy with it. In the end going with three premiums was likely to not last too long but having them meant moving down to other targets was easier so Kane ➡️ Nunez this week. Was keen on rolling FT but Nunez was probably my main target in the opening weeks but I didn't think he'd start so quickly. How did you get on mate?

68 in the end, flying on Saturday but no Haaland meant loads made up ground on Sunday.

Did the obvious Kane to Haaland transfer on Sunday. Nunez high on my radar too, but Robbo and Trent block him with Salah.

Thinking back to the Community Shield, the standouts were Nunez and Haaland along with Salah.

Robbo and TAA are still top options and will give you some very nice weeks, I would have considered it but I can't watch Liverpool play if I have double defence, I always feel like they're too prone with their high line and less cover than in previous years (mind VVD and Alisson normally save them anyway), but they'll still keep around 18-20 clean sheets I'm sure so you'll be rolling in pts when they do. I was definitely in the minority in going with only 2 Liverpool spots but I wanted to keep a move to Nunez open if needed so it looks like it worked out OK. I don't think Nunez is near Haaland for finishing capabilities but he just gets into such good positions and has great movement that he's bound to pick up goals, perhaps more patience may have been wise but I ignored Jota at my peril last season so said I couldn't do it again.

Just hold both for the season, they will outscore all the other forwards.

I did A. but I went threemium and figured I would be ditching Kane for someone and using the difference to upgrade a mid. I just didn't know when. Thought it would be after a few game weeks but like the look of Darwin.

Kane will do well. But if you go Darwin, the extra 2.4 mill could be huge. Where would you use it?

Has there been any analysis on how Cancelo may not be the same as last year's with Haaland in the team?

Is there any reason to think he may not be the same as last year's with Haaland in the team and that it requires analysis ?

One would think Cancelo's chance for assists would increase with a top goal scorer like Haaland in the team

I've not see him put one ball to Haaland so far

How many games have you watched for far ? Or how many minutes even ?

It's only been one game week.

I expect Cancelo to have more assists this season, either directly to Haaland or with Haaland taking up defenders and Cancelo assisting others.

I also expect Cancelo to score more goals too as defenders concentrate on Haaland and the final third opens up a bit for Cancelo to shoot.

Did you see anyone put in a ball from out wide to Haaland against West Ham? The only time I remember it was Grealish and that was when he was inside the box, wasn't that type of game. West Ham were very deep and narrow and nullified City's wingers for the most part. Cancelo will do fine and far better than last season. He'll keep putting balls in from the left half-space like he always does and will pick up assists again, that being said Haaland doesn't exactly score loads with his head.

Think I saw few on YT channels - FFS ones.
Opinion is that he will not be same as last year but better now with big man Haaland in team.

        How will he be better?

The thing I am seeing is Cancelo now passes to mids who try to target Haaland, not him directly putting balls to Haaland

FFS vid discussed and had a position map. Cancelo and Walker move up and invert into mid field to cover the mids pushing up into a front 4/5. CS they did this as well, so need to see if it continues. If it does and if Walker is still nailed, downgrade to free up cash. Hopefully I got this right.

Yeah, that's how I read it too.

Rodri holding gives KDB license to roam too. Plus Gundogan on Sunday.

2 wingers and a striker and the whole team is pressing in attack besides the 3 players at the back/middle.

What will you do with the money from Foden? Kdb the better player but if it’s KDB + 4.5 vs Foden and Saka for example, that’s different!

    Early WC.

    A) Robbo + Neco
    Or
    B) James + Saliba + 0.5ITB

    (Have Trent and Salah)

      B

Also because that 3rd Liverpool spot for Nunez or Diaz is a strong play.

I thought the early wildcard was about Nunez as much as Haaland?

I'd hold Jesus for now but my point was keeping a 3rd Liverpool attacking slot open isn't a bad move either.

I don't normally fret about price changes but i did keep 0.5m itb for a change and did the obvious early Kane to Haaland switch on Sunday.

However, first time ever looking at this site and it seems when people wildcard they can't scrape accurate data which weakens the price change predicting ability.

Let's talk about Pascal Groß, he played so well vs United, I do have Leon Bailey at the moment, taking him out would leave 6m overall, I already have Martinelli, Neto Andreas and Salah, but what do I do? Who do I go for that you guys think would be a solid MID. I though Leon Bailey would been great and with everton coming up, Everton are struggling for Attack and I think Villa could get a few. Ugh so many thoughts, I need your guys opinion on this one.

I wouldn't worry too much about Bailey this week. He has a decent fixture and it gives another week to assess other 5.0 to 6.0 midfield options

I’d stick with Bailey for now, give him a chance Vs Everton. If he/Villa are poor again, jump off.

Gives an extra week to see how Groß looks too.

Now that guy aaronson is popular than bailey come on KDH a think is best 5.0 mid (bailey owner). I will save my ft this week but why Leeds mid?

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

KdH scored a screamer from about 25-30 yards. I think he's a good player and if Maddison leaves expect he'll be a great option but I'm not sure of returns with him long-term. Aaronson has only played one league game so far but was impressive in that and in preseason and looks to be playing fairly close to the forwards.

Yep Harrison and Aaronson furthest forward. Ahead of Bamford and Rodrigo for average field position in the heat map.

Aaronson played as an inside right forward last game.

Yup I’m much the same but Robbo, Zinchenko and Kulu over TAA, Saliba and Foden.

Actually, the bench options look good to potentially boost in GW3 if you aren’t welded to BBing in a DGW
