European football is back! Congratulations to last weeks’ winners, especially our overall winning manager LaBridouille who scored a massive 476 points with this stunning team:

New season, new scoring matrix

Hey all! I hope you’re well and ready for another season of the Sorare Academy and some more ramblings from me.

The scoring for the Academy largely follows the same rules as the main Sorare scoring and there are slight changes coming into effect in about a month’s time. With that in mind, I thought it was worth having a look at them through my usual French prism.

The big winners, in general, have been attacking full-backs and box-to-box midfielders.

Below I take a look at some of the biggest French winners (winning = rising the most places in the L15 rankings [L15 = average score over the last 15 games]) and discuss why they’ve ‘won’. I will also add some context as to what that may or may not mean going into 2022/23.

Let’s dive into the list.

Mike Maignan +79 places

The biggest mainstream French riser I could find, with a whopping 79-place rise in the rankings. This will be as a result of two things. Firstly, other goalkeepers are being punished more heavily for historical goals conceded. Secondly, Maignan is a great shotstopper, gaining points for saves made. Of all the players in this list, I think Maignan is most likely to maintain this scoring. He remains on the same team under the same manager who will almost certainly utilize the same system, and exert a similar level of dominance over most teams in the league.

Aurelien Tchouameni +79

Another big riser. Tchouameni was an interception machine for Monaco last season and did not lose many duels. Thus he benefits from the big boost to points awarded for interceptions and avoids getting hit too hard by the increased negative score for duels lost. However, as I’m sure you’re all aware, Tchouameni changed clubs this summer and, at Madrid, he is not projected to be a starter. However, he hasn’t suddenly become a worse player and his style and strengths won’t change. Thus, he should still very much benefit from the matrix changes, when he starts.

Quentin Merlin +59

My crowing about Merlin has intensified since the matrix changes. Why? Well, he’s classified as a forward on Sorare but plays as a wing-back in real life. One of the boosts for forwards in the matrix update was rewarding them (finally) for some defensive actions, although still not for tackles (weird). Thus, a defender classified as a forward on the matrix gains well.

Merlin loves a dribble and so benefits from the bump to ‘duels won’. Add to that the departure of Wylan Cyprien and likely Ludo Blas, and Merlin is in the running to take all set pieces and even penalties! He will remain an every week starter for Nantes when fit. Big season incoming?

Boubacar Kamara +42

Kamara is a funny one. First of all, he rejected some of the world’s biggest clubs to join Aston Villa. Secondly, he received a big boost in his scoring on the new matrix, unlike most other ball-playing centre-backs. Look a little closer and this is likely because his classification has changed on the Sorare website from defender to midfielder. Thus the boost he has received in the rankings is with him playing as a midfielder.

While I’m firmly in the ‘Kamara is world class’ camp, I do expect his scoring to be capped as he adapts to the Premier League. Villa are also not nearly as strong a team compared to Marseille in their respective leagues either. However I do think Kamara retains the potential to be a big SO5 scorer in the medium term though slinging passes from deep all over the pitch.

There you have it. There is no denying that the matrix changes do greatly benefit some players (mostly called Trent). However, it’s really important to take a bit of a deeper dive into a player’s current situation and even the tactical system they’ll play in and not just to rely on past data to project future scoring.

In this case, Maignan and Merlin look best placed to repeat last season’s data and thus benefit as projected. Tchouameni and Kamara might need to be faded a little, at least initially.

One last thing: for 2022/23, I’ll be running an experiment on the Academy. I’ll enter a PSG stack in each Gameweek where it’s viable and track my finishes to see how overpowered (or not) it may be. Here’s how it did last weekend…

I’ll be rolling with the same team line-up this weekend and I’ll be posting on Twitter how the rest of the season unfolds, so stay tuned – and don’t forget to set your team before Friday’s 11am deadline!

    Who would you play between:

    A) Andreas (wol)
    B) Gordon (avl)
    C) Cucurella (TOT)

Andreas, but don’t expect too much.

Everton are dire and I think Spurs will score at Chelsea.

Not yet and probably won’t ever be with Chiwell and Koulibaly options at LWB and LCB but if I had to put money on it I’d say it is 60/40 Cucurella starts against Spurs. He looked a lot sharper than Chiwell when he came on and TT would probably like to ease Chilwell back into things more than he could last Saturday.

Didn't take many corner last season (5 for Brighton) and would be competing with Chilwell, James and Mount for free kicks but never say never. Chelsea had about 18 corners on Saturday and most were tosh so there is an opening for a decent corner taker.

What do you reckon to this wc?
I don't have Haaland or an easy route to him, so I'm tempted to try and get on some players early
    Raya
    TAA Walker Cucurella Saliba
    Salah Kulu Martinelli
    Haaland Darwin Jesus

The plan wasn’t to WC but if it was I would have BBed in GW1… got the KDB/Haaland call wrong and saw enough from Darwin to know I’d want him so enough surgery to necessitate the WC

Cause you play this game for 12yrs, one more week of info wont kill you. I understand Haaland move but find some other way. Plus Gundo feels like waste of city place. Also you know Mahrez will score 15pts this week and no one has him 😉

I understand you but this feels like the worst way to get rid of Mahrez. If Pep wasnt Pep I would have him in my team from the start and I think he would score loads of pts. Untill things settle a litlle I would just go for Braut and city defender for now. About downgrading Dasilva can be your man but I would rather downgrade one from defence and bring Braut in.

Main question is can Walker cover Cancello, with Cancello role seemingly changing to narrower /deeper?...

Anyone think this will reduce Cancello s attacking returns?

Don’t think we have enough data to go by just yet, but assuming they play similar minutes I think Walker + 2m is better value (at the moment).

          Yeah...makes sense...have similar team...

was thinking of Mitro instead of Jesus, allowing Cancello, but very risky not having Jesus with the fixtures

Also on a wildcard, pre planned after my GW1 BB, 90% of the team is what I had planned before this week but I am stuck between 532 and 433 myself, will wait until Friday to confirm as I don’t want to over think it but honestly think both teams look fantastic, lots of ways to play this year IMO with the kind pricing and the ‘extra wildcard’

Thanks all for the replies. I feel Perisic has to go as not certain of starting next few and his price will drop, then midweek games start late August so he’ll likely be rotated a lot from there.

I’m not excited by Walker as an option but don’t like the other 5.5 and lower options open to me either.

Thinking exactly as you. I watched that video with the experts and they all said do not sell Perisic at any cost. Take the drop and he will haul but he’s gaining fitness there’s 3 games in a week soon and then there’s Europe. Surely he may only play a few Prem games in the next 6/7. Walker could tick along with 6 pointers and if Perisic can be nailed he maybe £5.3m to get him back in

Klopp would be insane not to start him. He made that mistake once vs Fulham, almost certain he doesn’t make it again.

Firmino has seriously declined. I see him as third choice behind Darwin and Jota at CF when they’re all available.

Started with him GW1 even when I didn’t think he would start, worth it IMO, he’s shown already he can make a difference from the bench and the team targets him when he comes on. Think he starts this week though 😉

    Gwk 3 transfer.

    Son- De Bruyener
    Walker - cucorella

Will he be loaned out? Doesn't make sense to me. Need a fullback due to lack of cover, so what's the point in loaning him straight out.

Regardless though, I think Walker is great pick at price. He'll be first choice most of the time unless a big hitter comes in.

        1. Andy_Social

They are going for 2 LBs. If they keep Gomez in the squad they can loan out the other one. Either way, Walker won't be secure for long.

How do you know City are after two LBs and not just looking at two with view to buying one?

Walker is excellent player and still performing at high level, I've got City season ticket so watch him a lot. Not saying he won't be rotated somewhat, but 5 mil is still good deal if he plays most of the games. If small money paid for up and coming player, I don't see him suffering that much minutes wise.

Think I would choose Jesus for now, but Saka could be more advanced, when not needed as a babysitter against Zaha. And if he is on pens I think Saka could return more points than Jesus.

Having said that I own the attacking trio.
