FPL new signings: Who is Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard?

Saturday evening saw Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen (£6.5m) make a quick return to Brentford, only to be shellshocked with a 4-0 half-time deficit that didn’t improve by its conclusion.

Watching from the sides was unused Bees substitute Mikkel Damsgaard (£5.5m), a fellow Danish international whose arrival in west London was confirmed last Wednesday.

The £10.1m attacking midfielder joins the many Danes already at Brentford, so where does he fit in at Thomas Frank’s side and what impact will he have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

Damsgaard is one of many exciting young talents to have emerged at FC Nordsjælland over recent times, alongside new Brentford colleague Mathias Jensen (£5.0m).

SeasonTeamDivisionAppsGoalsAssists
2021/22SampdoriaSerie A1100
2020/21SampdoriaSerie A3524
2019/20NordsjællandSuperliga35116
2018/19NordsjællandSuperliga3217
2017/18NordsjællandSuperliga1713

His third season of first-team football was outstanding, netting 11 times and setting up six more to ensure he was next off the production line. Italian side Sampdoria secured his services for the 2020/21 campaign.

The link between Damsgaard and Eriksen began in the summer of 2021 when, on the second day of Euro 2020, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during the match with Finland. Whilst recovering in hospital, in came Damsgaard as his replacement in the starting XI for the remainder of the tournament.

After a wonderful strike against Russia, he was responsible for a very scary moment experienced by England fans. It was his free-kick that put the Danes 1-0 up in the Wembley semi-final, although Gareth Southgate’s side eventually emerged as victors.

Shortly after, his career was put in jeopardy by an unfortunate series of injuries back at Sampdoria. Initially ruled out in October 2021 with a thigh injury picked up on international duty, he then underwent knee surgery and later discovered that he had a worrying arthritis condition.

“It was a very aggressive form of arthritis. There was no improvement, it felt like it was never going to heal, but thanks to the collaboration between Italian and Danish rheumatologists, a new therapy was designed and gave an excellent response.” – agent Jens Orgaard

Thankfully, he returned to action in April of this year but only managed to gather 576 minutes of game time over 11 league appearances.

PLAYING STYLE

It’s therefore easy to assume that Damsgaard is a similar player to Eriksen, making this a like-for-like replacement. However, this is not the case.

Whilst Eriksen is more of a passer with set-piece strengths and great vision, Damsgaard likes to dribble and isn’t afraid to get stuck into the defensive duties. The Athletic have specifically looked at this comparison.

Damsgaard is more of a traditional winger than central attacking midfielder. He likes to receive the ball by the touchline down his team’s left flank on his right foot, which opens up space for him to drive inside towards goal.

This ability to drive at opponents and dribble past them contrasts with the skill set of Eriksen, who prefers to dictate play from deep with his passing.

Additionally, his new team scored the second-fewest goals from outside of the box, meaning Damsgaard’s penchant for long-range stunners will add a new dimension to the line-up.

WHERE DAMSGAARD FITS IN AT BRENTFORD

As Yoane Wissa (£5.5m) and fellow new signing Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.5m) also favour the left flank, perhaps Frank has a different idea for this versatile player.

He himself is a head coach who often switches between a four-man and three-man defence, with both systems already used during these opening two matches.

“We think Mikkel can play as one of our ‘eights’ in a 4-3-3 system or as a ‘ten’. He can also play on the wing. We will use him in the way we think we can get the best out of his offensive abilities. Importantly, he is a player that will fit into our dressing room. He is a great character, he wants to work hard, he wants to work for the team, and he wants to develop.” – Thomas Frank

When combining Damsgaard’s injury-plagued 12 months with the excellent midfield starts for both Jensen and Josh Dasilva (£4.6m), there could definitely be an easing-in process for the 22-year-old.

Yet the introduction of such an exciting signing could also put off potential Dasilva purchasers. Some will just be happy to use Dasilva as a bench option whose imminent double-rise will increase squad value but, beyond that, frequent starts cannot be guaranteed.

IS DAMSGAARD WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Managers should at least wait until they’ve seen Damsgaard make his first start. If it happens quickly, he’ll be a strong differential option when considering Brentford’s brilliant run of fixtures.

Starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

Furthermore, he joins Pascal Gross (£5.6m), Brenden Aaronson (£5.5m), Joe Aribo (£5.5m) and Pablo Fornals (£5.5m) at the ideal price point for those intending to replace Pedro Neto (£5.5m).

Plan is Neto > Gray short term until I manage to upgrade that 5.5 slot.

Would you use a 2nd FT to downgrade Bailey to 4.5 fodder? Not a huge fan on losing .1 on Bailey, + .5 banked could come in useful.

    Thoughts?

I'd only bench him for City, so if you have viable bench cover would keep (that's what I'm doing).
Otherwise, I would go Cucurella or as mentioned below Henry is a good option with nice fixtures.

I'd only transfer Trip if you have 2 FT, no other pressing team concerns and no viable alternatives to rotate with him GWs 3 & 5. Short term I like the look of Cucu!

Brentford defenders Mee and Henry worth considering as 4.5M options too if you're looking for the extra 0.5

    Salah Martinelli Andreas

    Jesus Haaland Toney

    Sanchez Neto Dasilva Neco

Desperate for James. Should i wait till next week and play one of andreas neco or neto or i could upgrade neco to james for a -4 and play 5 at the back.

    Any advice really appreciated

have been saying this for a while but after GW4 if you are looking for a 5.5m Eze (or Olise when fit) could be your man . More than a assisted but on all set plays at the moment

Eze was injured most of last year due to tearing his Achilles and was playing to get match fitness. He is back again now.

Eze has been class in pre-season, and that assist is showing he is coming back to the player why we signed him in the first place

Or just downgrade Robbo and upgrade a midfielder, or even roll. but Bailey and Neto are stinking my team a bit) for a -4

      My Team ATM

      Ramsdale
      Robbo* TAA, James, Cancello, Walker
      Salah, Martinelli,Andreas (Bailey, Neto)
      Haaland, Jesus, (archer)

Trouble is ironically I did a -4 last week from Kane/Perisic to Walker Haaland lol

Scared I may play a WC to in to much haste

I would go with eze if i wasn't obsessed with getting zaha in (you missed copy pasting the eze part into this post 🙂 )

Btw can we expect zaha to play striker in all of the tougher matches? Makes him a bit fixture proof of so(since he has potential for points playing on the wing vs the smaller teams and plays striker vs the top 6 )

Palace are looking for another winger/striker, leaving the possibility of playing Zaha upfront.

It does depend on who we get in.

With Olise coming back (missed preseason), Eduoard can play on the left and so can Eze,(as again we are looking for a Gallagher replacement)

Cheers. Tbh zaha should've been priced in the 7.5/8 mid bracket. Considering the possibility of playing upfront + penos and the fact that with Viera he looks like he ll get his 10 to 15 goals he seems a bit underpriced

I agree (so are Pakace in general, (apart from our rotating strikers. Eze and Olise (who will play more than Ayew this season) can also underpriced.

Eze on all the set pieces too but Olise will share them when they come back

Prediction of which one will score more points GW3?

    Dasilva
    Andreas
    Bailey
    Jensen
    KDH
    Neto
    Grob
    Aaronson
    Etc...

I would just have Dasilva on my bench out of these with another 4.5 mid on my bench.

If I was stuck with Bailey, I would either downgrade him to 4.5 or upgrade him to Aaronson because all these picks are a lottery and Aaronson is the most promising. The 5.0 mids are just meh.

Martinelli and only Martinelli as a starting budget midfielder for me and 2 x 4.5 mids on bench as I am playing 433.

Yes Palace are waiting on Gallagher again, so the two spots we are looking for is another winger/striker (might no be first choice but another one who can play out wide) and another midfielder.

Hopefully, as Gallagher is so desperate to make it in Chelsea, we an get a Livermento-type deal, where Chelsea have first dips at the minimum release clause. As we are trying if we can not do another loan

I'm a hostage to my bad moves but have to now settle on some strategy:

        1) No hit now, just solve Digne next week
        2) Digne out for a hit now, potentially another hit involving Robo/Mount next week

        TAA/Robo/Cancelo/Neco

pp90 stats total over last 5 seasons (seasonal scores in brackets most recent first)

        Salah 7.8 (8.6, 6.8, 7.3, 7.1, 9.4)
        KDB 7.0 (8.0, 6.4, 8.1, 5.5, 6.1)
        Son 6.9 (7.7, 6.6, 6.1, 7.0, 7.0)

All 3 players are remarkably good, although KDB has more rotation risk and gets injured a fair bit. Salah is undoubtedly the king of the pack.

For me there isnt much to choose between them, although one could argue that having 2 captains from the same team isnt that smart (most will have 1 of Haaland or Kane). The 1mln saving on either KdB/Son is sure tempting though as it allows say a Mendy over Iversen which is quite the upgrade.

In the 2 FT and 0.5m itb - no obvious options

        Ederson, Ward

TAA, Cancelo, James, N. Williams, Zinchenko
        Salah, Bailey, Diaz, Andreas, Martinelli
        Haaland, Jesus, Archer

Could lose the FT. Nowhere else I'd want to downgrade to fund Bailey -> Gross ( 0.1m short ). Could downgrade Bailey, but potentially he'll still come through. Fix suggesting Bailey to Lanzini... not feeling that.

I have a statistics model I wrote which is recommending:

        1 sub = Bailey -> Gordon
2 subs = Bailey -> Lavia, and either Upgrade N. Williams to 5.0, or Archer to Edouard

None of those I like either...

I've got some headaches going into GW3.

        Sanchez - Steele
        TAA - Cancelo - Trippier - Jonny - Dalot
        Salah - Saka - Dasilva - Andreas - Colback
        Darwin - Jesus - Haaland

        1FT, nowt in the bank.

Darwin obviously needs to come out. Even with their own run of poor form, I expect Liverpool will run riot again against United, so I'm tempted to bring Diaz in (was considering Firmino as a straight-swap differential, but cautious as he seems to have a knock).

Mitrovic and Wilson are also tempting, but fixtures aren't ideal, so I'm eyeing Toney. Can't really do Vardy without major surgery. Probably didn't help that my squad was originally built around a speculative 5-2-3 formation (had Dasilva since GW1, he's turned out to be a good punt). Anyway:

        A) Darwin + Dalot > Toney + James
        B) Darwin + Colback > Toney + Rodrigo/Martinelli
        C) Darwin + Colback > 4.5 + Diaz
        D) Darwin + Colback > 4.5 + Foden
        E) Other / throw laptop into the sea

        Thx!

I've gone for A, thanks all - bit cautious about the Arsenal attacking triple-up despite fixtures, wanted James for a while, clears out a United defender, in-form striker with great fixtures in Toney, wins all round

I cant decide, have to pick 2 out of 3, they would play every week (also have James)

        Cucurella
        Gross
        Rodrigo

Cucu for sure. and then depends on fixtures. elite defence with attacking potential.

i dont think you should have a situation where you are forced into this decision though, with Andreas/Neco existing they should be making up the first 2 slots of your bench.

Thoughts on this move with 2 FT:

        Ward (Iversen)
        TAA Cancelo James Walker (Neco)
        Salah Saka Diaz Bailey (Andreas)
        Haaland Jesus (Greenwood)

I'm thinking Saka + Bailey to Martinelli + Rodrigo.

Or is it stupid to sell Saka now?

Cut your losses and do it, IMO.

Martinelli looks very involved and Rodrigo is a big upgrade on Bailey.

Plan was to bring in kulusevski this GW for spurs good fixture run, but Diaz just scored last night, so I be considering him strongly? I've got salah & no other spurs
Issue with Diaz is he seems to only score absolute screamers, which isn't feasible for consistency & kulu has been very consistent since joining & averages a goal involvement every 90 odd mins

Both good options - go with Kulusevski to give yourself some Spurs cover.

Looks like a mid-price option is emerging in the third ST slot.

For me the standouts seem to be Toney, Mitrovic and Welbeck.

Who do we think is the best choice?

I wouldn't have any of them in my squad but if you require a Nunez replacement then I suppose Toney is the one.

Mitro has the stats and the talisman effect.
Toney has the fixtures and Brentford look a bit like West Ham did early last season.
              Welbeck - no.

Toney edges for now, especially as he is a little more expensive meaning the bail out to Mitro is always on.

Just checking a Welbeck/Toney stats comparison & its reinforcing my opinion that Toney is really overrated FPL-wise.

              This season (small sample obvs):

              Last season:
              Toney 32 starts, 12G (4 pens), xG non-pen

              Lets try that again...

Just checking stats comparison on Toney/Welbeck & its reinforcing my feeling that Toney is quite overrated FPL-wise.

              Last season:
Toney 32 starts, 12G (4 pens). xG open play 4.52
Welbeck 15 starts, 6G. xG open play 6.54

              This season:
              Welbeck xG 0.45, xA 0.46
              Toney xG 0.39, xA 0.06

Interesting. I guess the main concern re. Welbeck is his fitness as he’s always been a very good player. Toney being nailed for 90 + pens gives him the advantage in that department.

I am seriously considering perma capping him. I am of the belief that he will go to smash the EPL record for goals in a single season (currently 31/32 cant recall which, but there is no reason he cant get 40 if he stays fit).

Pep stated that the team needs to understand that he is going to be 'there' (meaning in goal scoring positions). The first few weeks Gundo has been standing in the same spot as him, and Foden didnt square the ball to him in the last game. It wont take that group of players very long to figure it out.

Hmm, not sure Pascal Gross is worth a -4. At least not when the immediate fixture is a tricky away tie.

I would just get rid of Bailey.

He is stopping you from having players which can get points!

That is why most are shipping Bailey cause he is a hindrance.

              Salah Diaz Zaha Martinelli Andreas
              Haaland Jesus Toney

I kind of like this WC team. Will play 3-4-3 or 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 based on fixtures/form.
If Walker or Cucurella end up being failed punts il swap Zaha for Aaronson/Neto/Eze and upgrade them to James/Cancelo.

Just waiting on da silva's price rise /kulus price rise and il be able to afford it.

Alternative is Diaz to Aaronson/Mendy to Sanchez and upgrade Walker and Cucu to Cancelo and James. But considering the info we have about Walker and Cucu and the able replacements at 5.0 if they fail(trippier/Brighton etc) I'm very happy with it.

                  Ward
                  TAA Saliba Neco
                  Salah Zaha Andreas Martinelli
                  Haaland Jesus Toney

Are basically nailed in my team. So it's
                  Mendy + Cucu+ Walker + Diaz
                  Vs
                  Sanchez + James + Cancelo + Aaronson

Considering its my WC i probably won't be able to afford James/Cancelo all season since the next time I can get them in would be in GW17 and their prices would be through the roof by then. That's a scary thought lol

                My WC team is

                Mendy (4)
                TAA Cancelo James Cucu (Neco)
                KdB Diaz Martinelli (2*4.5)
                Haaland Jesus Toney

The only question mark for me is whether Salah is a necessity or not - and with Haaland existing im not convinced he is, and whether his points can be covered by a combination of KdB/Son. The only cuts would be in defence like you have made but that defence looks optimal to me.

Kdb + Haaland removes one captaincy choice. That's the main issue. Salah offers flexibility to give you a second captaincy option based on fixtures. Cucu + Walker being a whole 3 million cheaper vs James and Cancelo is nothing to scoff at either tbh. That's the difference between a da silva and a zaha +0.5
