FPL new signings: Who is Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard?

Saturday evening saw Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen (£6.5m) make a quick return to Brentford, only to be shellshocked with a 4-0 half-time deficit that didn’t improve by its conclusion.

Watching from the sides was unused Bees substitute Mikkel Damsgaard (£5.5m), a fellow Danish international whose arrival in west London was confirmed last Wednesday.

The £10.1m attacking midfielder joins the many Danes already at Brentford, so where does he fit in at Thomas Frank’s side and what impact will he have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

Damsgaard is one of many exciting young talents to have emerged at FC Nordsjælland over recent times, alongside new Brentford colleague Mathias Jensen (£5.0m).

SeasonTeamDivisionAppsGoalsAssists
2021/22SampdoriaSerie A1100
2020/21SampdoriaSerie A3524
2019/20NordsjællandSuperliga35116
2018/19NordsjællandSuperliga3217
2017/18NordsjællandSuperliga1713

His third season of first-team football was outstanding, netting 11 times and setting up six more to ensure he was next off the production line. Italian side Sampdoria secured his services for the 2020/21 campaign.

The link between Damsgaard and Eriksen began in the summer of 2021 when, on the second day of Euro 2020, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during the match with Finland. Whilst recovering in hospital, in came Damsgaard as his replacement in the starting XI for the remainder of the tournament.

After a wonderful strike against Russia, he was responsible for a very scary moment experienced by England fans. It was his free-kick that put the Danes 1-0 up in the Wembley semi-final, although Gareth Southgate’s side eventually emerged as victors.

Shortly after, his career was put in jeopardy by an unfortunate series of injuries back at Sampdoria. Initially ruled out in October 2021 with a thigh injury picked up on international duty, he then underwent knee surgery and later discovered that he had a worrying arthritis condition.

“It was a very aggressive form of arthritis. There was no improvement, it felt like it was never going to heal, but thanks to the collaboration between Italian and Danish rheumatologists, a new therapy was designed and gave an excellent response.” – agent Jens Orgaard

Thankfully, he returned to action in April of this year but only managed to gather 576 minutes of game time over 11 league appearances.

PLAYING STYLE

It’s therefore easy to assume that Damsgaard is a similar player to Eriksen, making this a like-for-like replacement. However, this is not the case.

Whilst Eriksen is more of a passer with set-piece strengths and great vision, Damsgaard likes to dribble and isn’t afraid to get stuck into the defensive duties. The Athletic have specifically looked at this comparison.

Damsgaard is more of a traditional winger than central attacking midfielder. He likes to receive the ball by the touchline down his team’s left flank on his right foot, which opens up space for him to drive inside towards goal.

This ability to drive at opponents and dribble past them contrasts with the skill set of Eriksen, who prefers to dictate play from deep with his passing.

Additionally, his new team scored the second-fewest goals from outside of the box, meaning Damsgaard’s penchant for long-range stunners will add a new dimension to the line-up.

WHERE DAMSGAARD FITS IN AT BRENTFORD

As Yoane Wissa (£5.5m) and fellow new signing Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.5m) also favour the left flank, perhaps Frank has a different idea for this versatile player.

He himself is a head coach who often switches between a four-man and three-man defence, with both systems already used during these opening two matches.

“We think Mikkel can play as one of our ‘eights’ in a 4-3-3 system or as a ‘ten’. He can also play on the wing. We will use him in the way we think we can get the best out of his offensive abilities. Importantly, he is a player that will fit into our dressing room. He is a great character, he wants to work hard, he wants to work for the team, and he wants to develop.” – Thomas Frank

When combining Damsgaard’s injury-plagued 12 months with the excellent midfield starts for both Jensen and Josh Dasilva (£4.6m), there could definitely be an easing-in process for the 22-year-old.

Yet the introduction of such an exciting signing could also put off potential Dasilva purchasers. Some will just be happy to use Dasilva as a bench option whose imminent double-rise will increase squad value but, beyond that, frequent starts cannot be guaranteed.

IS DAMSGAARD WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Managers should at least wait until they’ve seen Damsgaard make his first start. If it happens quickly, he’ll be a strong differential option when considering Brentford’s brilliant run of fixtures.

Starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

Furthermore, he joins Pascal Gross (£5.6m), Brenden Aaronson (£5.5m), Joe Aribo (£5.5m) and Pablo Fornals (£5.5m) at the ideal price point for those intending to replace Pedro Neto (£5.5m).

Fair enough. Gross has been fairly disappointing for a while but has started well I guess. Rodrigo is looking good for me, especially with Bamford out.

True, although I wouldn't pay too much attention to the back-end of last season given how much changes! He's definitely the best option around the 5.5 mark at least.

Personally, I would go for Zinchenko as Cucurella might have a chance of being rotated with Chillwell and I wouldn't go for Gabriel because of his low attacking rate.

Robbo to James for a -4 or even FT is not a good idea.

What is the wrong direction in FPL?

I would say wasting an FT to do Robbo to James while stillb owning Bailey when he is being sold by majority is not the right direction.

              So we agree to disagree.

Robbo to James is a better move. I have Bailey, and he stays in my team for the time being. Why waste a transfer to get a 4.5 or a 5.0 low impact player in your team?

Neither is ideal but have to settle on some strategy:

    1) No hit now, just solve Digne next week
    2) Digne out for a hit now, potentially another hit involving Robo/Mount next week

    Rambo
    TAA/Robo/Cancelo/Neco
    Salah/Mount/Martinelli/DaSilva
    Haaland/Jesus

    Ward/Digne/Pereira/Archer

I would suggest taking out Bailey and adding in a £5.5M Neto or maybe even a £6.0M Rodrigo. Personally, I would go for Rodrigo because of his goalscoring streak. To get Rodrigo I would probably transfer out Robbo and get a solid Ruben Dias in defence. Man City have got a decent run of fixtures and there is no way that Dias is getting rotated.

80% nailed. i think also he plays more in the man city blueprint which arteta is following (occupy the half spaces), whereas KT is more a get it to the byline and cross it kind of player.

Tierney is an important part of the arsenal squad and one of the best LBs in the league but needs to listen to his body and stay fit. Zinc lifts that burden on him somewhat but I have never though martinelli and tierney were particularly effective whereas the LHS axis of Zinc/Martinelli/Xhaka looks far more complimentary.

    1 year, 8 months ago

So when are we going to accept the fact that KDB will have more points than Salah this season and just get him?

The new Pep style suits City's number 8s, they get more space than ever, especially KDB while Haaland occupies centre backs and wingers are wide. Plus he is on set pieces.

I just wildcarder in order to get him and correct the mistake from the start of the season when I knew all this, but went for Salah because of ownership. Now enough is enough.

It's because people here watch only straight and narrow. They never see wider picture. And people like sheep follow others.

Salah has only 4 goals since ACN, of that 1 penalty and 2 against poor United. I know that I could suffer in next 2 games without him because he might play as CF, but on long term, KDB is clear. KDB finally has good finisher who will use his assists.

also a key theme i think this season will be that at some point the chatter will turn to - are Arsenal genuine title contenders? they might well blow the competition away for 2nd. good things are cooking there.

          1. Dušan Citizen
            • 10 Years

Well, I don't think they can challenge City because of some mistakes in defence, but I agree they could be well 2nd. They have fantastic, quick, young attackers who can score at least 2 goals against any team outside top 3. Would like them to get Tielemans tho.

Jesus is a season keeper for sure, Martinelli should keep performing too.

they are the man city clone but with liverpools connection with the fans. that will take them a long way.
and they want it so badly this season after what happened in the last one.

might surprise but Haaland/KdB are a bridge too far for any club to compete with.

Very true. But I don't rate Liverpool's midfield at all. And they tend to concede a goal in every match, opponents know how to score against them - quick counter on their right side.
In attack, they focused mainly on crosses and Salah's individual effort. But Salah is well covered by defenders and now they don't have Mane to break the opponent's bus with a header. Jota might help with it, but he is injured. Nunez isn't good with headers although he is tall.

I was afraid for City for having too short roster, but Pep adapted again and Liverpool seems like they don't have plan B and can see them fighting for 3rd of 4th place.

I would captain Haaland against Newcastle as he will have more space than in home games. In home games, KDB has more space. Srecno 🙂

I think this is the key point - we have seen enough. This calender year he isnt putting up the kind of numbers he was before. He scored a ridiculous number of points in the first half of last season but since then its been a downhill trend. He also has an aging body, a fat new contract (as an arsenal fan ive seen Auba, Ozil, Sanchez all lose interest once that happened), his partner in crime Mane has left for greener pastures and there are a bunch of new players who might impact his game. Sure he is royalty around these parts and will score well but 13m I think is a last seasons price - not this ones where he should be about 12 same as Son/KdB.

            1. Dušan Citizen
              • 10 Years
              1 year, 8 months ago

Exactly, he will score here and there, but not worth the price. It's only the big ownership that's problem.

Salah is more a creator than scorer recently, but his key passes are rarely transformed into goals. And we can have some cheaper players for assists then.

Okay as a liverpool fan, I am very happy with our offensive performance in the first 2 games.

This is a massive overreaction to two games and I have no doubt we will be top 2 by some distance and that we will run city close again.

We have 8 players on the injured list, not unlike two seasons back where morons on here said we were done. So nothing new there.

The big difference this time is none of them are long term or season ending whereas last time they all were.

Salah has dropped off this year that's true but he was clearly distracted by his contract situation which has been resolved. He is one of the fittest if not the fittest in the team and so I expect zero drop in performance this year. That means you can expect similar returns to previous seasons which is why he is the most expensive player in the game because of his consistency over many seasons. I think the front 3 this year are better than last year and I believe they will click and all prove value over the course of the season. We are two games in for Pete's sake. Two games. I am trying to give a rational response to a ridiculous proposal but this thread makes it extremely difficult to take you seriously. Have at your way. Please. And I hope a lot of people follow you. But to question klopp or Salah after 2 games with one blank. Wow

Front three being miles better is part of the problem for Salah fpl wise. Dias and Darwin will score goals, some of these goals will come from Salahs usual output. No bad thing for Liverpool, bad for Salah on fpl

Agree with a lot of what you have said above.

When mane arrived, his biggest asset was pace and in particular his first step. His output was good. Then he had two great seasons in the middle where he was almost as prolific as Salah. Then year 5 happenned. Output dropped back to his mean but worse than that he lost his ability to beat a man, which meant all attention went on to Salah because he could be defended one on one with ease. He has been the most frustrating of our front 3 for two years. Liverpool die hards know that mane is not the reason for our slow start. 9 injured players is. Good luck when they return and you have given up on liverpool in fpl

              Contract situation has zero influence.

Salah turned to creator rather than scorer now, he'll get more assits, less goals. And for that price, he is not worth it in my opinion.

            I love anti template views.

My views on liverpool have little do with template though.

            We will finish top 2

We will be a very high scoring team.

The defencr will tighten. It always does.

You can't go wrong with three of robbo, trent, Salah, Diaz, nunez

no doubt they score well. but thats not the point in question - its whether he and liverpool we be completely eclipsed by this refreshed and revamped City team. in which case the value isnt in salah - its elsewhere.

liverpool have started the overhaul of their squad but thats a process that can be hit and miss - the age of many of the players liverpool rely is now the wrong side of 30

its a big call but a season defining one potentially

If you were so confident, why didn't you start with him? Oh it took a haul against the mighty Bournemouth for you to get convinced? I'd reserve judgment till both sides have faced equally easy opponents

So two games in and you are telling us all that KDB will outscore Salah. How ridiculous. It seems that you have forgotten Salah's output from last season. KDB is hardly a great source of goals from open play - in fact he was the lowest ranked for xG when compared to the other elite mids.

Salah could have a couple of goals the other night so I would urge patience. To sell him is just pure stupidity.

Are you blind or only rude?

I said "The new Pep style suits City's number 8s, they get more space than ever, especially KDB."

And you are talking me abut last season and xG. And I would advice you to take your eyes off of stats and actually watch some football.

The view on Salah is calibrated to last seasons points which were massively front loaded. The trend is clear.
Its not 2 games of data - its actually 17.

          Salah
          pre-AFCON P20 16G 10A
          post-AFCON P17 8G 4A

Goal involvements per game 1.3 vs 0.7. Its quite the drop off

          KdB over same time

          pre-AFCON P15 4G 1A
          post-AFCON P17 11G 9A

Goal involvements per game 0.3 vs 1.2

I feel like Man City have changed their way of play just to suit Haaland. Before Haaland arrived, De Bruyne was the man, taking all the set pieces and penalties, (well he still does take the set pieces). I feel like people should get budget midfielders (Rodrigo, DaSilva, neto etc.), or mid-priced midfielders such as Luis Diaz who is doing exceptionally well after mane's transfer to Bayern Munich. he is getting much more playtime due to this transfer and also due to the fact that Diogo Jota is still injured.

I may very weel do Salah -> KDB since I only own Cancelo and Haaland, but I will not do it ahead of this very GW.

Think Newcastle are way better than Man U, and could keep things tight throughout most of the game while Liverpool could score a bucketload.

I'm going to give it a couple of more weeks but I don't really disagree with your comments. I said before the season began that I thought Spurs might pip Liverpool to 2nd because they still haven't replaced Wijnaldum who did incredible work every week on covering the defence when Robertson and TAA were at the top of the pitch. No-one there can do his job and the ones that should be able to at least do part of it aren't ever fit (Keita, Ox, while Thiago just doesn't have that defensive ability or nous). Henderson on the opposite side doesn't have the legs to be an 8 any more and you can see it in his performances and the niggly injuries he keeps picking up. It's making a difference at the top of the pitch as Liverpool are becoming stretched more often and aren't moving the ball in transition quick enough.

Mane's departure has been big too, his dynamism on the ball is missed dearly and while Nunez will bag goals due to his movement and positioning, he's not going to link up with the wide men like Mane or Firmino can. I'm sure Salah will begin to go again but I'm wondering how he will adapt to playing with a central striker like him as the signs for him haven't been great so far. Meanwhile City are looking very good so far. They've dropped points at least twice in the first 5 games of the seasons 3 years in a row, but so far they haven't exactly looked like doing it, which is ironic as they looked so sluggish in the community shield after having a shorter preseason than everyone else. Early days but maybe Pep's approach of giving everyone an extended rest as opposed to Liverpool playing 6 friendlies before the season began may be working.

Leeds, Leicester, Southampton next 3. Leakiest defences I’ve seen this season.

Sterling and Mount will score, too good not to. Chelsea far better and will kick on now I have no doubt.

          Agreed.

Chelsea kick on, and always perform with a siege mentality after the robbery of the weekend.

Mount and Sterling will score against these defences 100%.

I think I’d go Saliba over Collins, tbh.

Neco’s performance is a game changer for me, particularly at home.

Patterson seems to have won his place too.

Cucerella risky, but I think worthwhile for now.

Firmino for a few weeks imo is worth it. Jota not even training yet, and they won’t go quick with him because they rushed him in the summer.

Easy switch at 8.0m. Darwin won’t play straight away either, no chance.

I wouldn’t really go for Firmino mate. He’s not gonna get playtime. It’s always gonna be Salah, Nunez and Diaz up front. That’s excluding Jota when he returns from his injury
