FPL Gameweek 5 differentials: Nunes can exploit Bournemouth

Gameweek 5 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is almost upon us, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Brighton and Hove Albion and Leicester City, who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of five per cent or less at the time of writing.

MATHEUS NUNES

FPL transfers: The latest new Premier League signings assessed 44
  • FPL ownership: 0.2%
  • Price: £5.0m
  • GW5-9 fixtures: bou | SOU | liv | MCI | whu

Matheus Nunes (£5.0m), Wolverhampton Wanderers’ new club-record £38m signing, has performed well for the club in his first two starts.

The box-to-box midfielder was thrown straight into the starting XI for Wolves’ visit to Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 3, before his Premier League home debut against Newcastle United on Sunday.

In that time, Nunes has racked up six goal attempts, four shots in the box and one ‘big chance’, and is clearly suited to the advanced midfielder role in Bruno Lage’s 4-3-3 set-up. From that position, it’s expected he’ll get the license to attack and join the front three when the opportunity arrives, given that Joao Moutinho (£4.9m) and Ruben Neves (£5.5m) are more likely to sit in.

Wolves were denied their first Premier League win of the season in Gameweek 4, as a late Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.5m) volley cancelled out Neves’ opener. However, Raul Jimenez (£6.9m) made his first Premier League start of the season, and elements of their attacking play caught the eye at Molineux. Indeed, Nunes had a great chance with a free header from the Mexicans cross in the first half, while his pass for Pedro Neto (£5.3m) almost produced an assist.

That suggests attacking returns are on the horizon, ahead of an appealing two-match run against Bournemouth and Southampton.

Nunes has hit the ground running at Wolves and is perhaps being overlooked as a budget midfielder.

PERVIS ESTUPINAN

FPL transfers: The latest new Premier League signings assessed 41
  • FPL ownership: 0.1%
  • Price: £4.5m
  • GW5-9 fixtures: ful | LEI | bou | CRY | liv

Pervis Estupinan (£4.5m) caught the eye with a lively home debut in Gameweek 4, as Brighton and Hove Albion maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

The energetic full-back/wing-back whipped several dangerous crosses into the box and regularly got forward in Graham Potter’s 3-4-1-2 formation, ending the match with a game-high three created chances and one attempt on goal.

It’s also worth noting that among all players on the pitch, only Moises Caicedo (£5.0m) registered more final-third touches than Estupinan. He didn’t neglect his defensive duties, either, with 10 ball recoveries and two interceptions.

The match saw Brighton keep their third clean sheet in four matches, and with a great run of fixtures, now is a good time to invest in the Seagulls. Indeed, they sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 5 to 8, a period which sees them face Fulham, Leicester City, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. They are in fine form, too, having gone nine consecutive top-flight matches without a defeat, extending back to the 2021/22 season.

Estupinan will help cover the void left by the departure of Marc Cucurella (£5.1m) to Chelsea, and while not quite as nailed as team-mate Lewis Dunk (£4.5m), could potentially develop into a first-choice player. If Saturday’s performance is anything to go by, that isn’t far away.

HARVEY BARNES

Barnes offering differential potential between now and end of FPL season 1
  • FPL ownership: 1.0%
  • Price: £6.9m
  • GW5-9 fixtures: MUN | bha | AVL | tot | NFO

Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) netted for Leicester City in their 2-1 away loss to Chelsea in Gameweek 4, his first goal of the season in just his second start.

The winger was the Foxes’ main attacking threat as he combined well with Jamie Vardy (£9.4m), ending the match with four goal attempts, three of which were on target. That means he’s racked up a respectable five shots in the box in the last two Gameweeks, a tally that ranks joint-seventh among all midfielders.

“Harvey Barnes was outstanding for us, we knocked on the door a lot. There was a lot of good for us but we’re disappointed with the result.” – Brendan Rodgers on Harvey Barnes after their loss at Chelsea

On Saturday’s evidence, further goals and assists will follow for Barnes, who could become an effective differential pick. Indeed, three of Leicester’s next five opponents – Manchester United, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest – have hardly been convincing defensively so far this season.

Meanwhile, no club has allowed more ‘big chances’ than Brendan Rodgers’ side across the opening four rounds, which suggests they’ll need their attacking players to step up and score if they can’t rely on their defence for clean sheets.

Barnes is a real difference maker in the final third, and after producing six goals and 12 assists in 2021/22, carries significant potential in FPL.

Struggling for obvious moves this week, but considering Rodrigo & Kane to Groß & Haaland which I can just about afford for free at the current prices (although slightly sideways, I know). Thoughts?

Swapping Ederson playing Forest at home, for Sanchez playing Fulham away? Not so sure about that one.

If you are confident Haaland will start I would definitely do those two transfers. I like Gross more as an option than Rodrigo (cheaper too) and while Kane is a great goalscorer and assist maker, and nailed and less likely to be rested than Haaland, Haaland (while being quite rudimentary in his game) just bullied people and is extremely effective in terms of goalscoring. Plus he is playing Forest at home, I don't think Forest are all that really and I think they will concede 2 or 3 goals vs City.

It depends if you;re confident on Haaland starting. I am keeping him cos even if he is rested his points potential is worth it for the games he is not.

If Haaland starts he has the weaker team on paper than Salah. Jesus is playing really well but other than that one week it isn't translating into points. That's the type of player Jesus often is = he is a brilliant player who contributes so much but it hasn't always translated into goals and assists, which is what you need in FPL. He is too risky to transfer out with how many people have him, but I don't see him as a better option to captain than Haaland or Salah this week either.

The risk with Haaland is we captain him and he gets rested. But Newcastle could give LIverpool a game. Still, Salah has a good points scoring record vs them,

      1. DWC1982

As an example of what I mean about Jesus, look at the Odegaard first goal vs Bournemouth. The tap in. That was all down to Jesus, bringing it out of the sky, then dribbling past people and creating danger in the box, but he didn't get the assist, it was sort of a pre assist to Martinelli who missed the shot then Odegaard tapped it in. He's playing as a 9 now but I still think he's a very unselfish player who will be the assisster of the assister often because of how he plays, dribbling into the box, laying off balls to overlapping wide men or full backs who square it for someone coming from deep or the other side a la that Bournemouth goal.

I think he will get his fair share of points, but can see him not always being the goal or assist maker too. Like I say, brilliant player but doesn't always translate into points, and FPL is all about stats. I think maybe instead of assists FPL could look at a key contribution system as that goal vs Bournemouth he really deserved to be rewarded with some points, for example. But it makes the game less fact based and more of a grey area, more convoluted.

Good case for all of them, that’s tough. If Trippier is not injured I like him after the Liverpool game. Arsenal lads look good but will likely be moved out on WC shortly. Cucurella and Walker slight rotation risks but will start more often than not. I do think this week could be a week they’re rotated however. Cucerella, Walker or Trippier for me.

I have been going quite heavy on defence in the last year but downgraded my money I think to enable guys like Diaz and Toney. I think Cucurella can be a good differential alternative to James. Missing Cancelo but my reasoning is he's not getting into as many great positions now because the way they play with Haaland seems to lessen Cancelo's attacking threat a bit. Of course Haaland is a rotation/rest risk. Liverpool aren't keeping enough clean sheets for me to justify currently having both TAA and Robertson, that will probably change but I do rate Diaz a lot and like his upside (despite being a rotation risk), even at more than a million more than Robertson.

    New Squad as of now:

Sanchez (Iversen) I expect to play Sanchez every game
    Trent, Perisic, Cucurella, Saliba, Trippier
Martinelli, Salah, Luis Diaz, Andreas Pereira, Murphy
    Haaland, Toney, Jesus

    Original squad was:
    Raya, Ward
    Trent, Cancelo, Robertson,Trippier, Zinchenko
Salah, Ward Prowse, Dasilva, Odegaard, Bailey
    Jesus, Haaland, Plange

I had the likes of Zinchenko, Odegaard in from the start, so sad to see them transferred out, especially with how create Odegaard is. Truthfully I would prefer him to Martinelli but cannot afford it, and even if I could he's gone up in price and it makes no sense to transfer him out then buy him back for more. Ward Prowse was a punt vs Man United which didn't work out.

I am quite happy with both squads to be honest. I still feel I played the WC earlier than I would like, and it was perhaps unnecessary, but I see a lot of upside with Cucurella, perisic (even though rotation risk), Diaz and Toney.

    Ramsdale (Ward)
    TAA Cancelo James Trippier
    Salah Diaz Martinelli Andreas
    Haaland Jesus

    Ward Neco Bailey Archer

0.6 itb, 2FT. Feel like going for a spicy differential by transferring out Bailey and play him over Trippier. Which one to go for?

    A) Matheus Nunes

What to do guys? 0.9ITB and 2FT...on paper looks okay but frustrating first few weeks.
    Sanchez (Ward)
Cancelo TAA James Perisic (N Williams)
    Salah Martinelli Neto (DaSilva,, Bailey)
    Toney Jesus Kane

Toying with getting Haaland in for Salah but feel I could get burned (Liverpool at home to N'castle, but Haaland is irresistable but could he be benched?). Help me please 2FT or 3 for a -4.

Strong defence and attack and nice goalkeeper. Weak looking midfield other than Salah and maybe Martinelli. Haaland has a great fixture but like you say he is a rotation risk and in goalscoring terms Kane is doing well too. I actually started with Kane but transferred him for Haaland in gameweek 2.

I would look at maybe trying to boost the midfield a bit. Lots of points come from midfielders, but I do like having a front three comprised of three of the following Haaland/Kane/Jesus/Toney/Mitrovic. The striker market seems better this season, tho still early days.

Thanks mate and yes totally agree with that assessment. I'm at a loss to what to do with my mids..not happy with Neto, Bailey and DaSilva but for their price points I am limited. 🙁

          No problem my friend

Yes I wouldn't be happy with them either. I mean they're all relatively good mid-table/lower table players, but I just feel it's maybe one too many of them. The way it looks now you're having to play one of Neco, Neto, Dasilva or Bailey every week. Not too bad as enablers, like I say they are mostly decent players, but it just depends if you wanna balance the midfield and maybe bring down the defence. What I did is change James to Cucurella on a wildcard (you can see a few posts above my original squad at gameweek 4 and what I currently have on wildcard. I think he is a good differential choice.
Like I say maybe you could downgrade a defender and upgrade to Gross (I like Gross as a player and he is a decent price). Eze looks good too and has decent fixtures, but the question is is he more of a maverick type player rather than a statistical player (we all know some great players aren't stats based so not FPL style players).

Aah I see what you mean..hmm let me take a look at downgrading defence to get a better balance in mid..James perhaps the one to give way.

It's just an idea or a suggestion I am positing. I have made plenty mistakes in this game over the years, lol, so don't put that much stock in what I say lol. But I still think that from my perspective it would give more balance to downgrade James or maybe even Cancelo (I gave some reasoning about Cancelo in my post, might bite me in the bum, but ultimately we can't have everyone we like the look of, we can only pick 15 players, lol).

if I were you I would downgrade either James or Cancelo to a 5-5.2 m defender, James to Cucurella looks a good one cos they both seem nailed (I don't think Tuchel fancies Chilwell) and they both look about as likely as each other to get assists (James bigger goal threat) and score clean sheet points together. Even if James outscores Cucurella a lot of weeks, you can make those points up with a stronger midfielder than one of those three. I would say having two of them is fine given you'd have Salah and Martinelli and Gross/Eze or if you could stretch to them the likes of Saint Maximin (he seems to be improving end product a bit, another great maverick type player) or Ward Prowse (actually fancy him to get a return vs Chelsea).

As do you my friend...really have appreciated your thought and consideration in replying.
How about this? I've been impressed with Brighton hence the calls I've made but may be over-stretching...I was toying with Cucerella but there was some chat about rotation with him..but could be swayed back. So what about..
                    James>Dunk
                    Bailey>Gros
                    Neto>6.7mid (possibly Eze)
                    Dilemma!

Yes, that is very true, Cucurella could be a rotation risk, but at the same time if you have a stronger squad you will be able to have people come in for him (although with 5 subs he may often be the dreaded 1 pointer). I think he will play a lot though we have to bear in mind Chilwell waiting in the wings and the punishing schedule.

James to Dunk makes sense, I like Dunk and Brighton too, I think they're one of the best coached teams in the league. Bailey to Gross is another good one because I do like Gross and see it as an upgrade. I made a point to someone else that, because Brighton are so well coached, Gross is more likely to score than say Neto or Bailey. They're both in worse coached teams (though Wolves are decently coached but not as well as Brighton). I have a theory that it is often harder to score individual solo goals than create team goals as team goals can often be created with a great system. Look at Gross against Man United - two finisher type goals, they were both brilliant moves, nobody did anything particularly outstanding for either goal, it was just two brilliant moves created by a really well coached team following patterns and muscle memory.

Compare that to Neto, who can score teams goals too, but he's more likely to have to beat a couple of men and put it in the corner, which is more soloist and individualist and less likely to happen imo.

Eze is only 5.5 I believe so even if you have 6.7 there you can save almost a million by getting him or you could do ASM or JWP.

No problem m8. i like him a lot too, just a case of whether he can translate his mercurial abilities into stats for FPL purposes. He's a brilliant player often but it doesn't always translate into stats, I don't care about stats in general football but I do in FPL cos it is a statistical based game.

Btw (second reply to this message of yours) here is my team from gameweek 4 and my new wildcard team, if you wanna take a look and offer some advice back

                  New Squad as of now:
Sanchez (Iversen) I expect to play Sanchez every game
                  Trent, Perisic, Cucurella, Saliba, Trippier
Martinelli, Salah, Luis Diaz, Andreas Pereira, Murphy
                  Haaland, Toney, Jesus

                  Original squad was:
                  Raya, Ward
                  Trent, Cancelo, Robertson,Trippier, Zinchenko
Salah, Ward Prowse, Dasilva, Odegaard, Bailey
                  Jesus, Haaland, Plange

I think its a great team and more balance than mine..clearly the weaker players are Murphy, Plange but obviously enablers which is fine.
I'm amazed you got Salah, Jesus and Haaland in your side ..fair play!

cheers mate, well actually Murphy and Plange are not in the same team as Plange was in the original squad ans Murphy is in my new wildcard squad. I still have almost 24 hours to mess with it though. Truthfully it might have been a waste of a wildcard as I was mostly happy with the squad anyway, but I fancy Diaz and Toney to do well in coming weeks and didn't wanna risk missing out on potential returns. I would maybe like Gross as well, In fact I think I would prefer him to martinelli but there's always that 'biggger club bias' in these FPL games ie when there are two good options, being tempted to pick the one from the bigger club.

In response to this. I could go Zinchenko Gross instead of Saliba Martinelli. Also means I am not doubling up on Arsenal in midfield and attack which is good if they start to tail off.

    TAA Cancelo James Robbo
    Salah Martinelli Gross (Andreas Bailey)

Which is the better choice for the other transfer
    A)Bailey to Diaz?
    B)Archer to Toney?

I think those are both good transfers. Both have promising goal and assist potential (Diaz and Toney). Diaz plays in a better team and I think is the better player in the long term, but Toney does really well for Brentford and is a very solid choice, and almost a million less in price. I don't think you can go wrong either way. Only thing I would say is if you keep Bailey rather than Archer at least you have another playing player (Archer won't get many minutes really), but I think it's a case of diminishing returns anyway cos I can't see Bailey getting many points at all with how Aston Villa are playing, and you'd probably bench him most weeks anyway.

Wildcarding after a disappointing start (234 points). Going for both Haaland and Kane. Considering swapping Salah to Diaz as that would allow me to upgrade my third striker to Mitrovic or Jesus. But Mitro's fixtures aren't so great ...

    Sanchez
    TAA, Robertson, Perisic, Cucurella, Saliba
    Salah, Odegaard, Gross
    Haaland, Kane

    Bench: Ward, Dasilva, Andreas, Archer

Liverpool defence doesn't look as sharp and on a WC I would improve the bench as the games are coming thick and fast, Robbo to Dunk and Archer to Toney/Mitro will make your squad better.

Cheers, I appreciate it. I'll sleep on it and may well jettison Robbo.
It feels wrong as the TAA/Robbo/Salah triumvirate has served me so well for so long. But can't get sentimental if we want to progress.

Diaz is a great alternative to Robertson as the third Liverpool option. I thought about it a lot before the season started, went with Robbo, and don't think it has paid off so far.

Diaz and Salah together does feel a bit like overkill. I don't think I ever went Salah and Mane previously.
But Diaz is certainly doing a lot better than Robertson.

Fair enough mate. Just my thinking is they tend to score a lot of goals and they can assist each other too, plus if Liverpool score one is generally involved on the day, if not both.

I do sometimes do two players from a team in midfield and attack. Never three though.
