FPL Gameweek 5: Wednesday’s goals, assists, bonus and statistics

Erling Haaland (£11.8m) was the star turn of the evening with a hat-trick and a 17-point haul, with Gameweek 5 captaincy rival Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) having to make do with two assists in Liverpool’s last-gasp 2-1 win over Newcastle United – a match in which Alexander Isak (£7.0m) scored on his Magpies debut.

Gabriel Martinelli (£6.4m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.2m) continued their fine starts to the season with goals for Arsenal against struggling Aston Villa, while Harry Kane (£11.4m) made it four attacking returns in as many matches with an assist in Tottenham Hotspur’s draw with West Ham United.

Managerless Bournemouth, the side thrashed 9-0 by Liverpool on Saturday, managed to hold Wolverhampton Wanderers to a goalless draw: that’s now just two goals in five matches for Bruno Lage’s troops.

      Given the short turnaround to Sevilla (3 days) and two big games after that (Spurs and Dortmund) I think he will be benched. Slight chance he'll start given he came off early but I think the next period is too intensive for Pep to take the chance despite how fit he looks.

        Seems like it whenever a dubious assist is given it's usually a popular player to keep the masses happy... If yesterdays shot that was rebounded and scored by Jesus was not Xhaka but in fact someone like Rodrigo it would have been given as an assist.

        Have you seen the goal btw? Clear shot by Xhaka that's saved by the keeper and knocked in by Jesus!!

          The popular ones only get noticed more because people focus on every detail in the replays involving popular assets (the simple explanation of having more eyes on the action, really)

          It's just how Opta and EPL Match Center interpret stuff, I think. Won't always agree with what we see from here, but it happens to unpopular assets too. Rightly or wrongly

            It's not right because anyone who watches the goal can see how obvious an assist it is! I've seen passes going one direction deflecting in another and been given as an assist for popular players this was a shot saved by the keeper and directly knocked in by Jesus! Like how much more obvious does it need to be for him to be given an assist!

            It ridicules the game for fpl as it means we should just stick to popular players who's attacking returns have more 'eyes on'.. At least fanteam have granted the assist I guess! I'm guessing they too use Opta... But the fpl towers don't want to upset the masses who probably went for Odegard or Saliba as their arsenal third which takes all credibility away from fpl and show's new sites like fanteam will give them a run for their money in the future due to the bias involved in fpl

            C&P from FPL rules.

            "If an opposing player touches the ball after the final pass before a goal is scored, significantly altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is awarded"

            Xhaka's cross/shot was deflected, then saved, then fell to Jesus. No assist.

              How many of those have we seen given in the past to more 'popular players'.. IMHO, if that was odegaard we'd be seeing an assist.

              For example when players have crossed a ball from the wing and significantly altered the intended destination but a player still gets on the end of it and knocks it in. Still is an 'FPL assist' Or a shot that's deflected which the keeper saves and is knocked in.. I guess in this case Xhaka's initial cross wasn't on target (which was meant for Jesus anyway) was deflected and saved by the keeper but still finished by Jesus

        From the bits I've seen of him I think it's possible you may be right. Seems like he might be sitting a bit deeper looking to thread balls through while the likes of Gundogan or Bernardo push that bit further up the pitch trying to get into and around the box. But I haven't seen too much of him so far

        Agree with Ze_Austin here, have to play Aaronson over Dasilva firstly, he's looked excellent and is nailed while Dasilva's lucky period has come and gone and he might not even start like this week. You already have very good bench options there, won't these moves create a big benching headache?
