UCL Fantasy tips: Fixtures, chips, captaincy and being ‘aggressive’

The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League (UCL) begins on Tuesday – and so does the competition’s official Fantasy game.

We’ll have plenty of coverage on UCL Fantasy over the next day in preparation for the big kick-off, as well as articles throughout the season.

Here, one of our Pro Pundits, FPL Milanista (aka Obay), shares some expert tips on the game. Obay knows what he’s talking about, too, with finishes of 141st and 31st in the last two seasons.

The FFS Pro Pundits 31

The most prestigious club football competition is now only few hours away, and it’s this time of the year that we start talking about the UCL Fantasy game.

If you are new to this game, it would be highly advisable to go through Neale’s article that was published a few days ago as he provided a very detailed piece that explains the main features of the game and its similarities as well as differences to FPL.

In this article, I would like to focus on few strategies that I’d advise you to incorporate into your game, which could prove handy and allow you to reap significant rewards in this season’s competition.

BEING AGGRESSIVE

First of all, you need to know that the UCL competition is based on 13 Gameweeks (unlike 38 Gameweeks in FPL), and if that hints at anything, it clearly shows that being an aggressive manager in picking your squad is the way to go. By aggressive, I mean you have to put enough study and play the fixtures, apply chips early on (will be discussed later), as well as not fearing any double/triple-ups.

FIXTURES

Let us first talk about fixtures, as fixtures are king in these kind of Fantasy games. The UCL includes Europe’s elite teams, as well as second-tier clubs, all across the continent, and this is enough to create huge gaps in team levels and offer us opportunities that need to be properly utilized if we are aiming at a strong finish. Imagine an FPL Gameweek where Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea play teams that are possibly not as good as the 20th-ranked Premier League team? We would be all over them, and that is the case here as well – in the group stages, at least.

CHIPS

The group stages are key. That is where you need to be so aggressive and where all chips must be played, in my honest opinion. This is again due to the fact that this is the round where we should expect huge results from big teams as they face the less fortunate teams in their group. As teams start getting knocked out, the gap between the remaining teams lessens and the lower tier teams will disappear, hence an overall reduced opportunity to score big on a Wildcard/Limitles.

From my first look at the fixtures, there is no obvious best strategy, however, I am quite sure that my chip strategy will be to use the Wildcard just before Gameweek 3 and the Limitless chip in either Gameweek 2 or Gameweek 5. The Wildcard is usually best used just before Gameweek 3 as that allows you to target the Gameweek 3 and 4 fixtures in one hit as they are identically the same, while big teams who already qualified by Gameweek 6 will rotate heavily in that round and it makes the use of the Limitless chip less appealing.

The obvious advantage in using the Limitless chip in Gameweek 2 is that it allows you to focus your attention on Gameweek 1 fixtures only when creating your initial squad, hence not worrying about the difficulty of fixtures beyond that stage. However, I do think that the majority of the teams that we will be looking to target in this chip are playing at home in Gameweek 5, not Gameweek 2.

In case you decided to go with a Wildcard in Gameweek 3, Limitless in Gameweek 5 strategy, then you will have to take into account the first two fixtures (Gameweeks 1 and 2) for all teams when selecting your squad, with teams like Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea, and probably Tottenham Hotspur catching the eye here. Another good plan for people implementing this strategy is to bring in Barcelona’s assets for Gameweek 1 with a pre-defined plan to switch them to PSG/Inter players using the two free transfers.

THE SPLIT ACROSS TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY

One of the key points that barely gets talked about is the split of players across Tuesdays and Wednesdays. With manual substitutions in place, and although this is not a crystal clear method, statistically and from my own experience, it is much better to have more players playing on the earlier day (Tuesday) as this allows you to see more points to know whom to keep and whom to manually substitute. The fewer Tuesday players you have, the more tricky decisions that you have to make on the next day, and sometimes you may have to substitute a 4-5 pointer which could turn out to be a bad decision as your Wednesday player fails to even match it.

There is no need to be obsessed by this point as in its own, it doesn’t turn a great pick bad simply because he plays on a later date. However, I do tend to always pick the earlier day player when I’m 50/50 between two or more assets. To put that into context, a squad of 9-10 Tuesday players and 5-6 Wednesday players is probably the ideal mix that I would like to enter the season with. This can also be an 11/4 mix if I am quite sure that I will be using a chip in Gameweek 2, as teams’ fixture alternate (a team playing on Tuesday in Gameweek 1 will play on Wednesday in Gameweek 2, and vice versa).

CAPTAINCY

Another key piece of advice that I would like to share here is captaincy and its importance in UCL Gantasy. Again, this is a concise competition and any lost captaincy points could kill what you would have assumed to be a decent week.

Therefore, one of the main strategies that you must implement, both in your starting squad as well as in your future transfers, is to ensure that the best captain choice in each matchday (both Tuesday and Wednesday) is in your team. This ensures that you are securing at least the points of the most explosive assets of the round.

Does this necessarily mean that we should only captain the obvious choice every day? Not really, as I do sometimes fancy a differential captain on a Tuesday, especially if I know that my best captaincy option on Wednesday is capable of rescue if needed. So again, it’s all about risk vs reward but with manual substitutions/captaincy changes, the game encourages some bold moves in one` way or another.

That’s it for now. Please be reminded that the UCL Fantasy deadline is not over until the first game of the week kicks off, and this means that we will definitely have some line-ups on hand before finalizing our squads – look at them and try to maybe pick up that explosive differential, especially that you already know that even if he fails, you will get a chance to substitute him with a player on your bench.

Good luck everyone, and hope you all smash it in Gameweek 1!

Haaland Foden

    Ward Iversen
    TAA Robbo Cancelo Trippier Neco
    Salah Martinelli Gross Aaronson Andreas
    Haaland Jesus Toney

Would have exact money to do Robbo/Iversen -> James/Sanchez, but would create benching headache (Aaronson plays NFO)...
But anyway not bad to have a good bench player considering UEFA competitions...

Any other idea? For example Robbo -> Fofana which would give me the option to go for assets like Rashford or even 8m range Midfielders later on?

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but don't overcorrect your team on WC - remove Salah, take all the money out of defense etc.

We've seen this before where the start of the season starts with more goals than usual, teams still trying to settle on their defensive shape etc. Humongous at the back might not be ideal, but I still think having at least two of TAA, Cancelo, James is optimal.

Salah might be delivering at a slower rate than last season but honestly, I'm not sure where else I'd like to put the money. A midfield of Salah, Martinelli, Rashford, Gross looks very decent and won't run you too much. Salah's other secret weapon - penalties - hasn't kicked in yet. He will get some soon to keep his score up.

That said, I think Haaland should be the default captain every week unless you see a specific reason/fixture to go against him. This week does not seem like that to me. I'm still captaining Haaland this week. Wolves are pretty decent in defense and I don't see a good reason to go Salah (c) this week personally.

I hear Thiago's back in training today too. And Matip's fit. So TAA and Robbo may be back soon. They are capable of pulling monster hauls out of their arse at any moment. As are Cancelo and James.

A sizeable haul can make up for many weeks of blanks. These attacking defenders require patience, but they should end up great value.

If Chilwell were nailed he'd be straight in, but Trippier looks a great stop-gap...

I agree - past experience suggests things settle down & ripping up a team could backfire in the long run. agree on Salah but one question would be whether to have Salah or KDB - maybe budget to bring either in / flip - but currently I prefer KDB

"but I still think having at least two of TAA, Cancelo, James is optimal."

Cancelo has scored his annual screamer so don't expect much more.

TAA and Robbo being subbed early is concerning. A lot of attacking returns come at the end of matches and they do need those to justify the price.

Can't argue with the Salah point. He could suddenly start scoring at any time, even if he is off the boil. That being said going without is justifiable. Don't think it will hit you hard either way personally.

I'm going to captain Sterling over the big man this week, but agree with the point in general. Think City will have to be a little cautious of Spurs on the counter so they will try to control the game and maybe take less risks. Just a feeling.

Disagree on Cancelo. I'm bringing him back in on WC. City's defense is still the strongest in the league by a distance and he's always good for bonus. You buy him for consistency of starts. He also gets forward quite a bit in games against weaker opposition.

I think if I ditch any of the premium 3 defenders it's TAA because of the rotation.

      I agree.

2 premiums in defence + Trippier + good cheapies - Dalot, Wolves def, Neco/Patterson etc. is the way to go.

Chilwell must have appeared on everyone’s radar again this week.

So many decent options in mid for 6.5 or less. So keeping Salah makes sense.

      And Haaland permacap.

I have added nothing here - just massively agreeing with your points.

Yes, at the moment there's nothing justifying getting rid of Salah.

At a push, TAA getting subbed off before 60 minutes was concerning, but he has hauled already this season and the potential is there to do it again.

Cancelo is a set and forget for me.

Jesus looks most likely to be going first for me, as there are other cheaper appealing options like Toney and Isaak.

The only thing I agree with in the above is that James and TAA still are good options. The rest is a flawed logic.

I sold Salah on my wildcard gw3 and set up for a BB gw4. Doing so has now enabled me to get an overall strong squad different to most others as they struggle to break away from the template.
I am not afraid to sell ANY player in FPL if I feel it will give me better combinations with better opportunities of points.
Much like how Salah does not seem to be opperating correctly in the new liverpool tactical system. Adapting to Nunez being the focal point and Diaz the chief creator.

I also quickly noticed that Jesus is not a good FPL pick and sold him 2 gameweeks ago. I was already saying he is an unselfish team player, argumentative, combative and prone to a yellow. And surprise, surprise Jesus gets a 1 point v United his third yellow in a row after I sold him, That makes him a great player but a poor FPL option.

I still know people like yourself will STILL be afraid to sell Salah and Jesus. Claiming they do not know what to do with the funds. But that is just code for being risk adverse and afraid to go against the crowd. There are plenty of options to use up Salah and Jesus funds. Take it from a non-Salah and non-Jesus owner.

I am hoping this strategy allows me to make more gains on spreadsheet managers like you who are afraid to make big changes. FPL is a fluid game and people should not be afraid to make transfers. I will likely buy Salah back at some stage on the multiple free transfers etc but only if I think there is value/form there and it seems opportune to do so.

Contrary to how you phrase it, I'm not 'afraid' to sell players. I just still see value in the players you don't.

You're right that Salah isn't looking good tactically, but he still has some key strengths - he's nailed for 90 mins, he takes penalties, and he plays for Liverpool. He will get chances, he will have assists off his shoulder or bum because he's in the box when Liverpool put pressure on the opponents.

Didn't really discuss Jesus but yeah, he's on the chopping block once the fixtures get tougher but he still has two more good games and he's involved in attacking plays for Arsenal. He was very unlucky to only get 4 points against Bournemouth and ofc hauled 19 in GW2. He's not a dead asset yet and yes, you won this week but these guys are highly owned for a reason.

I don't see where you want to put the funds you save. Kane? Sterling? Fernandes? Where do you see greater value than Salah at the moment?

I got Sterling in this week, because I feel Chelsea are slowly getting their act together. Plus with Pierre to come in should make Sterling an even better option. With the upcoming fixtures I feel Chelsea could be ready to take off, and I want to be on that runway.

The way I have my team set up I have my own rotation options. This week i have Trippier first sub and Cancelo second sub (already have Ederson). It is just another way of playing the game. Plenty of ways to use the funds.

"I got Sterling in this week, because I feel Chelsea are slowly getting their act together."

Honestly, there's very little to support this. Chelsea have not looked good this season and Mendy has been poor. Their midfield is a mess and they don't have Auba ready yet because of his jaw injury.

To me, going Sterling over Salah is not going to work out but I may well be wrong so yeah, if you want to play a different way that's entirely your call and good luck to you!

True the Chelsea defence has been poor (I got rid of one of them) , but Sterling has shown spark despite it. Plus those fixtures are nearly ideal for gelling. Plus my idea of getting Sterling means I am only two transfers away from getting Son/KDB/Salah if required. Before that my highest value midfielder was 8.2m.
So there is method to the madness. That 3m of a saving is currently being used elsewhere in my squad.

Problem is who do you replace him with.

Pretty much a move you need to do on a WC because none of the other premiums are outscoring him, so you'd surely downgrade to the point where you have 4 or more million to play around with so you can spread the wealth?

I was considering it (only saw the second half yesterday and while he looked good on the ball, it was mostly away from the box), but his xG+xA is still very good (think it's 0.92 per 90), while Everton look much improved but are still in the bottom 3 of the xGC table if I remember correctly. I'm definitely keeping Saliba as he's been one of my few good punts this season and is too good value so I'll stick him on the bench in the tough games. Had Martinelli's goal been allowed and/or Arsenal got a penalty for Maguire's blatant body-check, we could all be feeling different.

hard what to make of anthony after that debut, shades of balotelli's debut for liverpool which got people briefly excited (i clearly remember rodgers on the touchline beaming with joy at every step over and gesture to the crowd). but we know how that went. there was some really awful stuff from him yesterday which defenders will get wise to pretty quickly but ten haag could mould him into a great player .

    Ramsdale,
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Perisic (Neco)
Salah, Luiz Diaz, Martinelli, Matheus (Andreas)
    Haaland, Jesus (Greenwood)

    2 FT, 0.2 itb

Really fancy upgrading Greenwood to either Toney or Mitrovic but don't see other way than downgrading Salah. Should I remove Salah or be patient with having just 2 forwards?

I'd be tempted to drop Perisic, has City, Leicester, Arsenal and Brighton next. Leicester the only good fixture there and I fancy Sessegnon may start that with Perisic probably playing the 2 CL games and City match. Still not enough to allow you to bring in Mitrovic or Toney though. Might have to drop Salah or Diaz (given their upcoming fixtures I think it's fine to do it). Like the Nunes punt by the way, been very impressed by him

Bought in MacA for Kulu as a knee jerk to try and save money before a wildcard over the next week or two, and he has Bou next so not a bad person to have...

    Options:

    A) Wildcard
    B) Take a hit to do Greenwood to Toney or Mitrovic... But planning to wc in 2 weeks max.
    C) Leave it and keep limping...
    D) Something else.

    Anyone playing UCL fantasy? 🙂

This is where I'm at atm

    Vlachodimos - 4m
    Perisic - Pique - Kounde - Grimaldo - Marcano
Nkunku - Reus - Kulusevski - Bergwijn - Joao Mario
Lewandowski - Benzema - Kolo Muani

This is only for gw 1. Playing limitless in gw 2 and WC in gw 3.

    Thoughts? 🙂

      Trapp / fodder
Perisic / James / Nuno Mendes / Otamendi / Nuno Tavares (lol)
Vini Jr / de Ketelaere (or maybe Reus?) / Bergwijn / Joao Mario
      Haaland (C) / Benzema / Rafa Leao

        Yes

Then attack gw 2 with limitless

Then attack gw 3 and 4 with WC

Then make 2 FTs for gw 5

Gw 6 will be rotation nightmare anyways

Then again we have unlimited transfers before round of 16

Everton leading the Delta league's for underperforming up front (-3.55) and overperforming at the back (-4.29). The numbers always come good in the end so I think I'll have 50p e/w on Arsenal beating them 5-3 at the weekend (350/1).

Early thinking. 2ft and 1.1itb. Thinking Robbo has to go. Poor attacking stats and always a risk of rotation. Currently thinking about a punt on Antony/Rashford before gw9 wildcard. So Pereira and Robbo -> Saliba and Antony/Rashford would leave me the team below.

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Saliba
    Salah Antony Trossard Martinelli Aaronson
