FPL

How do goalkeepers score their points in FPL?

Most of us know what makes a desirable Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeeper: clean sheet potential with the ability to supplement those shut-outs with a decent number of save points.

That’s exactly what Nick Pope (£5.2m) is currently offering, and the Newcastle United number one indeed leads the FPL goalkeeper standings for points ahead of Gameweek 9.

While acknowledging that pinpointing an appealing goalkeeper is hardly rocket science, we here take a brief look at how this season’s shot-stoppers are scoring their points in FPL.

POINTS BREAKDOWN

(click above image to expand)

Dean Henderson (£4.7m) is a good example of why it’s important to look beyond the total points column.

The Nottingham Forest goalkeeper may sit third in these positional standings but 10 of his points have come directly from penalty saves, a semi-freak occurrence and something we can’t really rely on as owners – even if your chosen goalkeeper has a decent record from spot-kicks. All of his bonus points, and his only clean sheet, have also come as a result of those two saves from 12 yards. Had both of those penalties been scored past him, he’d now be sitting on 15 points instead of 33.

It’s something we’ve known about for years but Ederson (£5.5m) is essentially a ‘clean sheet or nothing’ type of goalkeeper: he is the Premier League’s only current starter between the sticks who hasn’t registered a single save point this season.

Other custodians struggling for save points as a result of solid defences in front of them and/or easier fixtures are Aaron Ramsdale (£4.9m, one save point from seven starts), Robert Sanchez (£4.6m, two save points from six starts) and Alisson (£5.4m, two save points from six starts).

Contrast that with David Raya (£4.5m), whose Brentford side had one of the more straightforward fixture runs in the first eight Gameweeks but who also allowed more shots on target than any other team except for Nottingham Forest.

Raya only has one clean sheet to his name in 2022/23 but can’t be matched for save points (nine). In fact, in every Premier League match this season, the Spaniard registered at least one save point. A total of 43.3% of the stops he has made have come from efforts outside of the area, shots that typically (if not always) represent ‘easy’ save points as there is a smaller chance of them finding the back of the net.

Goalkeeper% of total saves made from efforts outside of box

Suddenly thinking about WCing this week, with Patterson, no Salah, 2 Ars, Fofana as part of (v) crap defence etc etc.

I’m not holding it for any reason particularly, esp if we lose it pre WC (?) + really do get free transfers during WC (?)

    Ward
    Cancelo Persicic James Trippier
    Salah Maddison Foden
    Jesus Haaland Mitro

    Subs: Iversen, Perreria, Williams, Murphy

Many are dead ending their team with free transfers for the Blank in 12 (sell Haaland in 12 and get back in 13) and Wild Carding in 13.

That is what I would do with your existing team, what ever it is

Your WC team has 4 players that blank in 12, a possibly injured Mitro, rotation risked Perisic & Foden and dodgy keepers.

I do agree though that blank is causing me headaches as well. Lot of forward planning.

What is feeling on MItro though. Likely to play or to miss I'm not seeing anything definitive.

Am on WC have Salah and Haaland, yet am really torn between fitting KDB or going to Foden with less compromise rest of team.

Foden 'appears' as nailed as KDB this season and imo, has potential for more offence than has shown. Plays high up as well. Could match or exceed KDB for much less as City mid cover.

    TAA (7.4) vs Zaha (7.2)

Also Cancelo at 7.2 and 42 points is too expensive yet Zaha at 7.2 and 31 points is now miraculously essential.

I made the mistake of going for Walker instead of Cancelo at the beginning. Knew it was a risk but the £2m was too tempting, fixed now. He'd be a better winger than most wingers in PL

I am considering Cancelo to Trent using FT. I had sold Trent in GW3. I think its time to get him back when others are selling as it could be a nice differential. City blank coming up in GW12, Stones is injured and Trent has a nice fixture this week. Trent also has significantly better attacking numbers than Cancelo. Only thing I am worried about is the Southampton home game of Cancelo in GW10.

    What do you think?

    1. HellasLEAF

TAA is a great player could work out. Not against it.

      1. banskt
        • 10 Years

Question is the timing and ream structure. Shall I do the move now or in GW12? I don't think this move makes sense in GW10 or GW11. A haul from Trent is very much possible in GW9. Same goes for Cancelo in GW10.

      Under 4.5m - extremely hard ?
is this first choice or second choice keeper?

First choice then I would say need to rethink team to get at least 4.5 playing keeper

      Second choice

      What do you think?

Andreas we know will start. Probably should have had more returns so far his year. Fulham have no problem scoring goals (if Mitro fit). NUFC not big on clean sheets.

Bailey might not be nailed. Villa pretty defensive of late.

Usually plenty of goals in NL derby so...

On WC, have Ward as my other keeper:

    A. Guaita & 4.5 def (Burn/Zouma)
    B. Iversen & Cucurella

    Thanks!

      What do you think?

I'd imagine both Leicester and Chelsea can only get more solid. None of the components of A seem that inspiring. As an animal lover, wouldn't choose Zouma on principle and his GW12 fixture not great assuming he has to play then.

    WC Locked I think:

    Guaita
    TAA | Cancelo | James | Trippier
    Salah | Maddison | Zaha | Sinisterra
    Haaland | Mitrovic

    Iversen | Guehi | Andreas | Greenwood

0.3m itb (0.4m if Salah finally drops tonight!)

Yes, although a lot of GW and FTs between now and then so may change.

    Start Perisic or Bailey?
Isak to Toney or Solanke for free?

      What do you think?

Perisic plenty of threat - usually goals in derby.

      Tony! Toni! Toné! Solanke no-nee.

Would you start Saliba or Perisic this weekend?

Have just Kane from those 2 teams.

    Current thinking is:
    - North London derbies are high scoring
    - Perisic has greater attacking potential
    - Perisic rotation risk, Saliba nailed
    - My guess at final score 2-1
So play Perisic and hope for an assist?
But it sure feels weird to go against top of the league playing at home.

    Thoughts please
    Cheers

"Lads, it's Arsenal." Look at what happened at OT.

Perisic to start in derby surely.

Good point, Perisic has much better haul potential if its a big scoreline. Here's hoping spurs with two or more

Have a Isak >> Toney / Solanke dilemma, so planning ahead from next week what is the better combo:

    1. Toney Rashford
    2. Solanke Zaha
    3. Or Save FT next week (injuries permitting) and use 2FT to work Zaha in the following to have Toney Zaha

    Thanks

BOU have by far worst xG in league (though true that most of that comes from Parker-ball) and Solanke's top flight record is abysmal.
