FPL Gameweek 13 Wildcard targets: Best defenders

With remaining Wildcards being widely deployed in the run-up to Gameweek 13, we look at the stand-out Fantasy Premier League (FPL) targets for the next four Gameweeks.

To do this, we’ll be turning to the underlying Opta player/team stats, the Season Ticker and Rate My Team’s projected points for assistance. All of these tools can be found by subscribers in our Premium Members Area, where you can still get a full year’s membership for £2.49 a month (billed annually).

These numbers are all correct as of Thursday afternoon, before the day’s Gameweek 12 fixtures have taken place.

SEASON TICKER

Crystal Palace sit top of our Season Ticker for ‘defence’ when looking at the next four Gameweeks: all of their opponents are scoring less than one goal per game on average and sit in the bottom half for big chances created.

Everton now rise to second and again, their Gameweek 13-16 opponents are all bottom-half material for minutes per expected goal (xG) in 2022/23.

Manchester City join the above two teams in avoiding a ‘big six’ side over the coming four Gameweeks, with excellent runs for West Ham United and Arsenal only punctuated by trickier-on-paper tests in Gameweeks 14 and 15 respectively.

Chelsea’s run of matches doesn’t actually look that favourable, with all four of the teams they face sitting in the top eight for minutes per xG this season.

Newcastle United‘s unbeaten clean sheet (five) and goals conceded (nine) counts are backed up by some strong underlying numbers, with only Manchester City boasting a better minutes-per-xGC average over the whole of 2022/23.

Aston Villa and West Ham United are perhaps the most surprising names up there, while Nottingham Forest have had a marked improvement recently – although it’s worth pointing out that they have just had a favourable run of five games.

Everton are at the wrong end of the table for xGC: can their upcoming run of four favourable matches improve that stat or are we being lured to the rocks by the Season Ticker?

Also performing badly on the xGC front are Liverpool, who are ranked a dismal 18th for xGC over their last six matches. It’s not been the easiest run of games, it has to be said, with Arsenal, Manchester City and Newcastle among their opponents in that time. But the Gunners and Manchester United could say the same, having faced three big-six sides each in their last half-dozen fixtures, and they are still top half for xGC.

Anything you would change here for a hit (assuming no injuries)- 1.9 m in bank. No Liverpool obviously the main issue. Annoyingly .1 off Mitrovic to Darwin but then perhaps a blessing in disguise!

100% doing maddison/trossard to foden/martinelli (for free). question is:

    a) take a hit for van dijk (or gomez i suppose) (drop james)
    b) take a hit for an arsenal D (can get any of them) (drop james)
    c) just do the two moves this week and start guehi and solanke

So what if he wasn't let go? He signed a contract, gets paid and has to deal with it. He was kept on as a last resort and last resort he is.

There's plenty of players who aren't good enough for the first 11, he's just on an ego-trip. It's embarrassing how he keeps coming over to the pundits pre-game to keep himself relevant.

ManUtd actively tried to find suitors for him, none of the clubs that were in the CL that he would have been happy to go to wanted him. He's a great goalscorer but he offers nothing else on the pitch. Pressing, defending, link-up play, harmony, he doesn't give that to any team. He's been an obnoxious fool and he deserves what he's getting. No player is bigger than their club.

This. United themselves created the "he's not for sale" narrative to protect Ronaldo. The truth is none of the big CL clubs that can afford his wages wanted him.

This is a nonsense narrative being pushed by Ronaldo's fanbase. NO ONE wanted to sign him. Bayern, PSG, Madrid and others publicly distanced themselves from him. It seemed like Boehly and Chelsea may have been interested but Tuchel rejected it. If United had received an offer for Ronaldo they would've let him go. You really think Ten Hag forced him to stay when he clearly isn't in his plans?

Yep, that was one of the few offers he had and he didn't want to go. ETH wanted him onboard because he knew there was a chance he wouldn't end up getting a move he wanted to take, of course he'd try to incorporate him in that situation. No idea where people are getting the idea that he was locked up and told "you can't leave".

Give me a break. ETH is dumb & people are clueless. No club wanted him but why did ETH decide to say Ronaldo is in his plans? What plan(s) exactly?

I don't know what plans he had, I'm not him. I said he said he was in his plans because he likely thought there was a good chance he didn't get to go to a club he wanted. There are plenty of other managers that would straight up have said they didn't want him from the start and wouldn't play him and would have ignored him but clearly ETH isn't the type.

Do you think that every manager is a "dumb arse" every time they lie to media? It happens every week. This player might not make this game, we're not interested in this player, I'm happy with the squad, I'm not worried about losing my position, etc. He's not going to come out and make a fool of himself, the player and the club by saying "he's moaning about being here when he can't play Champions League, I'm sick of looking at him and he's bringing the mood down and he doesn't want to be here, will someone hurry up and take him please?", is he?

Yes there was. He's trying to protect the player and club in case he doesn't leave to act like both parties are happy. I mean most knew they weren't but you can't openly admit it. Openly saying a player is for sale also makes it clear that they'd be willing to accept poor terms/ lower transfer fee from a club. They've spent a lot on him so they wouldn't do that.

I mean you're acting like there has never been a case of an unhappy player at a club. Do you think a club should just concede to every demand a player makes if they're unhappy? Contracts are contracts, if Ronaldo didn't want to be there this year then he shouldn't have signed a 2 year deal and should have reduced his wage demands from new clubs. I knew when he signed that that he'd want out the next year if they didn't get top 4, it was obvious. But if he wanted to leave freely he should have signed a shorter deal or one that said he could leave for free if they don't get CL.

They won't be happy either. He's getting paid a ridiculous amount of money for nothing, he's given the club so much difficulty in the media with stuff like this and the Everton incident. Him being gone would have been better for them, but he knew that he was still going to draw a huge wage and be at a club regarded as one of the world's biggest where he could still break some records.

Yes it does. Look at the Ozil situation, or the Aubameyang situation. Both players of great talent but that had attitude issues and that didn't really fit in to what their manager expected from them on and off the pitch. A club can be diplomatic but still prefer a player to go, at the end of the day they're still tied to the club and if there's no way of fixing things they'll still want to ensure a situation doesn't result in their player's market value diminishing. I mean his agent was doing more work than ManUtd were in trying to get any CL club to take him.

Different situations. Arteta never said they weren’t for sale. In fact, he sold them as soon as possible. If Utd & ETH wanted Ronaldo gone they would have, instead they kept him for what exactly?

You haven’t answered this because the truth is Ronaldo wasn’t part of their plans so why keep a player to make him unhappy at the club.

To who? What bid did ETH refuse? Nobody Ronaldo would go to came in for him. Of course ETH is going to say he is in his plans then. Instead of training hard and working to get in the XI, he is pulling stunts like last night. No player is guaranteed a spot because of who they are, you still have to work.

    Please help me decide.
Best way to get Saka and Foden in my team in the next two gw?
    Trossard easy out, but then?
Gotta keep Salah for Forest, or do i really?

    A) just do Trossard+Zaha to Foden+Saka in gw 13

    B) Trossard to Foden/Saka gw13, Salah to the other one gw14 and will then have alot of cash to upgrade maybe Solanke to Kane or other positions.

    C) Trossard out for Foden/Saka and downgrading Pope to Raya/Guaita, so i can make Sinisterra to the other one of Foden/Saka

    Pope, Ward
    Cancelo, Trippier, Guehi, Webster, Justin
    Salah, Martinelli, Zaha, Trossard, Sinisterra
    Haaland, Mitro, Solanke

    Arrizabalaga (Ward)

Pure initial guesswork (when is it not) at this point, more of a reset of the page to update the opponent etc. Firmino's just started three in a row and less than 72 hours separate GW12-13, plus we know how big Klopp is on the 'red zone' etc. Darwin came off with muscle tightness in midweek as a precaution, too, so it might well end up being Salah + another and a rested Elliott on the right. Just my first thoughts!

On the Ronaldo topic, this is not new behaviour. He did the exact same thing at Juventus in 2019. Sarri subbed him before 60 minutes, his replacement Dybala scored the match winner, and he had left the stadium before full time. It has always been his way or the highway.

He must live in a world surrounded by yes men for him to believe his own hype. Even the Portuguese media have turned on him in recent times when it comes to their national team, citing his lack of involvement and influence.

The level of arrogance is embarrassing.

Would you prioritise bringing in Foden or Saka this week? 1FT to use, current squad is below

    Pope
    Cancelo Tripps Saliba
    Salah Zaha Trossard* Martinelli
    Haaland Toney Mitro

    Ward, Pereira, Guehi, Neco

I have the same offensive line and did Tross->Foden. City will go wild against Brighton. Saka starts today + not willing to take consecutive -4 hits. Need him next week for Forest and this weekend giving Zaha one last game.

    Ramsdale, (ward)
    Cancelo, trips, Guehi (dunk, Mings)
    Salah, zaha, martinelli, Andreas (trossard)
    Haaland, mitrovic, aubameyang

Free falling in mini leagues. Auba got to go, thinking Nunez, Jesus, or Toney
    Then trossard to Foden -4.

Worth the hit this week or do it over 2?
