Captain Sensible

Should we Triple Captain Haaland in FPL Double Gameweek 20?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are bracing themselves for a second successive Double Gameweek, pondering a long-term chip strategy and forecasting expected points while their fingers twitch nervously over the Triple Captain chip.

Norwegian marksman Erling Haaland (£12.2m) leads a cavalcade of Double Gameweek captaincy hopefuls, with candidates from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur providing alternate names for those with a healthy appetite for risks.

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling – and, specific to this week, whether now is the time to use the Triple Captain chip.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Friday’s 18:30 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Haaland returns to the summit of the captain poll after a brief hiatus, backed by just under seven-tenths of total votes cast at the time of writing.

No other player has garnered more than 15 per cent, with Marcus Rashford (£7.0m) currently in second place.

In third, Harry Kane (£11.6m) has just over four per cent of votes, followed by Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.1m) slightly further back.

DOUBLE GAMEWEEK CANDIDATES

ERLING HAALAND / KEVIN DE BRUYNE

FPL friendlies round-up: De Bruyne and Haaland on target

When Manchester City squeaked a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in Gameweek 19, it was just the third blank in 16 Premier League appearances for Haaland. It was a subdued performance, shorn of the usual accuracy, by failing to register a single shot on target despite receiving two big chances.

Haaland’s underlying goal threat numbers over the last six matches have slightly dropped below his gold standard but 19 shots inside the box, ten big chances, and nine shots on target still place him in the division’s top four over this period.

However, shot quality usurps volume, as Haaland ranks best for both expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI) during this time, with 5.67 and 6.15 respectively.

Above: Erling Haaland leads the division over the last six matches for expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI), with 5.67 and 6.15 respectively

De Bruyne registered his third blank in a row during the win at Chelsea, continuing his underwhelming form since the restart. However, owners can count themselves unfortunate – over the three Gameweeks, De Bruyne boasts the second-biggest negative xGI delta (-1.93) in the division.

Analysing over the customary last six matches, the Belgian leads the division for chances created (23) and is third for big chances created (6). Just a solitary Fantasy assist has arrived, highlighting his downturn in production.

Man City’s juggernaut attack has regressed to the mean over recent matches, in comparison to their early season over-production. Their xG of 12.97 exceeded nine actual goals.

Pep Guardiola’s troops travel to Old Trafford next, against a Manchester United side that is rejuvenated under authoritarian manager Erik ten Hag. Their four-game Premier League winning streak has buoyed confidence amongst supporters but a red-hot derby test awaits.

Defensively, they place inside the top three for clean sheets and preventing both shots inside the box and big chances over the last half-dozen matches.

Man United’s defensive improvement should be counter-balanced against the generous opponents of late, facing four of the Premier League’s current bottom six.

Guardiola’s side host Spurs in the second part of Double Gameweek 20. Antonio Conte’s inconsistent charges arrive with one clean sheet in their last six outings, shipping 11 goals.

Worryingly, Spurs place in the bottom four for chances conceded in central positions (26) – an ominous statistic given Man City top the division for chances created (92), with 41.3 per cent of these arriving in the middle.

How many of you brave souls will captain Rashford over Haaland?

As a United fan, I feel like I've been conditioned to just be pessimistic. Since the return of the league/cups we've scored 15 and conceded 1 but I can't help but feel a lot of that was against lacklustre/poor opposition.

City will come back with a vengeance and they usually play like they're on steroids when they play United. Haaland called out United as the team he wants to score against, I reckon neither team will keep a clean sheet but it'll be a goalfest in their favour.

How do you all see it playing out?

I’m backing Haaland for minutes, chances, playing for the better team and generally just playing the averages

Much as I like Rashford and think he’s a great asset right now, he’s just not as reliable as Haaland yet

Close to it. I am chasing and think it is a great shout. City showing to be leaky right now and ManU could get 1/2 and Rash would certainly be amongst.

While v Palace could be anything, 2/3/4?

Expecting Haaland to have 200%+ EO and Rashford 100%+ EO and therefore wanting both to blank as a Haaland (c), Rashford owner!

Reckon with Rashford captainers lowering Haalands EO, TC on him would be best used this week?

Or Rashford captainers would be inconsequential?

Who's got a medium-term plan? Let's discuss it in this thread

    Here's mine:

TC: Rashford in DGW22 vs Palace and Leeds. If that DGW doesn't happen, I'll delay TC until DGW 29/34/37 or a random mini-DGW with two great fixtures (a must for this chip for me, every season). I don't believe it must only be used on Haaland or it must take priority over a great BB/FH DGW. I also believe that capping a TC candidate in a BB DGW can still get you loads of points if (most of) the 15 players promise hauls

BB23: Promises hauls. The fixtures are really good for the popular attackers and defenders from Chelsea (can be avoided if still off form), Brighton (just attackers for me), Spurs (just Kane for me), Newcastle (Schar to Spurs WB after that GW: perfect fixture swing), Man U, Man City and Liverpool (just Salah for me). The only teams with what I'd consider tough fixtures are Man City and Arsenal, yet they happen to be the two teams who have doubles

I understand there'll be bigger DGWs towards the end of the season, but the quality of these fixtures really has my attention. There should be more info closer to GW23, so I might decide not to deploy it if something better seems to be on the horizon. Not locked in. Just very tempting

With these in mind, here's my current squad:

    Kepa Sanchez
    Robbo Trippier Schar Shaw Akanji
    Salah Rashford Odegaard Almiron Andreas
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

With 2 FTs, I'm making moves which offer the most immediate upside: Robbo + Sanchez to Schar + Ederson. This then leaves funds for gradual improvements towards BB23, with Andreas to Mitoma in GW21 and Sanchez to Ramsdale in GW22 (bench Ederson vs Spurs)

The real kicker is beyond GW23, as I've got eyes on Doc for Schar in GW24 and Akanji to James/Chilwell at some point in that period

BGW25 doesn't look too harmful. There'll be many spare FTs for that, or I might even roll with 9 or 10 starters if I don't want to lose my blankets

Everything else is up in the air atm, because the post-GW23 situation with blanks and doubles is still unclear, then Europe should be back in the mix as well

Just a reminder that my TC and BB plans aren't locked in. I just know I don't want to use it on Haaland in GW20 as I need two bad defences to lock it in, no matter the player. WC18 saved my season, as unlimited transfer mistakes were made 😀

I use https://www.livefpl.net/myteam/ for this, as my hobby

What's your medium-term plan, if you've got one?

Nice recap, not at all bothered not to own KDB?

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        1 year, 5 months ago

Not over Salah, nope. KDB's return rate has dropped significantly since Foden left the first team, and I don't see Foden returning to regular starts soon

It's not a direct correlation, but an indication of the tactical change that Pep's been talking about and showing since the Liverpool loss

If the season started in GW11, KDB would have been out of the template by GW18. Kane is clearly better, while Salah at least still has top shooting stats

I prefer fixture quality to quantity, so I'm not considering the switch just because he has more matches. I have to think he'll haul while Salah gets significantly fewer points over their next few GWs, and I really don't

I don't really have a medium term plan at the moment, I don't think my team needs to much changing (3x United, Arsenal, Newcastle. 2x City, Liverpool, Chelsea).

      - I want Kane, Mahrez short term but can't do that without losing Salah both for this GW and next. So I'm a bit stuck

      - Darwin's alleged injury is annoying, I'd have kept him in hope, but I'll wait till tomorrow now

      - Need to get rid of James

      That's my ramblings.

Went WC this week due to plenty bad decisions and impatience with fixing my team. Could have got away with a -8 but it does allow me to set myself up for these next run of fixtures.

I am looking for BB23 as well and agree with your reasoning on the fixtures.

Here is my team at the moment

      Ederson Raya
      Trip Saliba Perisic Martinez Botman
      Kdb Odegaard Almiron Rashford MacAllister
      Haaland Kane Ferguson

2.2 itb, can get salah Gakpo or robbo if needed.

I don't like the keeper hit. Ederson barely ever makes saves, so you're relying on:

Check City's FPL points since the World Cup

Remember the season when everybody wanted Man City mids, yet so many other mids outscored them due to minutes?

Now it's not just minutes, but form and fixtures as caveats as well

    Who should I start?

    A) Kepa (CRY) & Castagne (nfo)
    B) Ward (nfo) & Castagne (nfo)
    C) Ward (nfo) & Saliba (tot)
    D) Ward (nfo) & Stones (MUN, tot) for a -4 hit

(Already planning of playing Castagne this week, but could play Saliba or transfer for Stones

Only other players to downgrade would be Mitrovic and Trippier.

Just trying to find a route to Kane as I already have Haaland, Bruno and KDB

Bruno and KDB are your routes to Kane, imo. If you've chosen them, you've effectively chosen them over Kane

            Yep
Not crazy that Bruno outscores Kane anyway? No suspension risk, league leader for big chances created, total chances created and xA in last 4 GWs, Palace fixture, low ownership

      Consider starting Ward over Kepa?
Though maybe Kepa’s best chance of points is Zaha taking a penalty! 😀

      Mahrez

    3. Ze_Austin

I'd want neither long-term, tbh. Eriksen is a JWP type in his deep role, while Mahrez is never far from being benched, especially with UCL resuming soon, as Pep likes him in big games

I think Mahrez works as a short-term punt and is more likely to be in the box than Eriksen. But if there's a chance of this being a long-term move...

      How about a Brighton mid?

Could have done without his 2 yellows but bringing in Leno this week over Kepa was smooth! 14pts to 3.
Captaining Rashford also helped me score 77pts which moved me up from 215k to 95k.

    B) Akanji

Ake likely to get more mins imo

    2. Ze_Austin

Ake, but the best thing would be to ignore them completely right now and go for nailed assets from the SGW teams. A lot less frustration, and quite likely a lot more points, imo

I have Akanji and I sweat over Pep's recent lineup experiments, yet I just can't sell him any time soon

Ah really I was thinking Akanji was more nailed… I need to put up to a 5.3m defender in (for Robertson) to enable me to put Kane in… maybe someone else like Gabriel for example?

    Kepa. (Ward)

    Mirto, Kane, Haaland
